AdvertorialWelcome to our third edition of The Maternity Network Directory. The Maternity Network is a new venture that addresses the need for a directory of professionals who are qualified and experienced working with fertility and maternity. The information and Directory offers non-biased, non-medical, holistic support for women. The website www.thematernitynetwork.co.uk includes listings of all our members, information about the services our members offer such as “what is a Doula, what can chiropractors do for you in pregnancy? How does Reflexology work? What benefits are there from having a massage?” and many more.

Our members have written articles to explain what you might use their service for and how they can help, many services you may not realise exist – invaluable help like Night Nannies, Birth Doulas, Jewellery experts, Breastfeeding consultants and more. These change regularly on the website so check back often.

Each Directory is given a Focus point. Beginning with Fertility, then Pregnancy, Birth, Postnatal and Babies and Beyond, then it circles back round to Fertility. This Summer Directory is focused on Birth so we’ve gathered our members to write articles about their skills and how best they can support you when preparing for the big arrival of your long awaited baby!

Our next directory is due out in September and our focus is Postnatal.

Louise Prince Founder, The Maternity Network

The Maternity Network tries to ensure the members advertising in the Directory are confident and qualified working their fertility or maternity field. We do this by collating copies of our member’s qualifications and insurance. We cannot guarantee these copies and they are not checked. The Maternity Network does not accept any liability or responsibility for any services or information provided by the members listed or advertising. The Maternity Network does not endorse any material or advice given in the directory or by members.

You can find all our members* listed in the Directory. These members have been accepted into our membership. This means that they have appropriate qualifications specific to fertility, maternity or babies, they are mostly self employed with insurance, they are members of professional bodied associations and those who work with under 18’s have sent copies of their CRB Police checks.

AdvertorialAll our members are listed here in our Directory. All our members have been accepted into the network by sending their photocopied relevant qualifications, insurance and CRB. This is so that you can be confident in the services you receive from members of The Maternity Network. We recommend if you have a medical concern that you see the relevant medical professional. It can sometimes take many months to conceive and this can be a stressful time. We encourage you to consider seeking support from complementary therapists. It is worth considering acupuncturists, Reflexologists, nutritionalists, homoeopaths or hypnotherapists – talk to different therapists and go to the one that you feel most comfortable with.

Focus on: BirthCongratulations! The big day is nearing! This is a time to ignore horror stories, reduce fear and connect with your baby. If you had a previous unsatisfactory or frightening birth experience we suggest you release the fears and negativity before going into labour this time. Sometimes emotional stress can cause babies to be breech or for labour to be delayed.

There are heaps of countless lists about what to take with you into hospital or prepare for a homebirth, but few really helpful tips that can support your labour from a natural point of view. Here are some really helpful things to take in that may make a difference to your comfort. You will get plenty of support from Antenatal Classes and birth preparation classes.

Prepare for a positive experience with Reflexology or Acupuncture, both therapies support the baby’s correct position and helps prepare your body working with hormone levels. You might like to have a birth partner with you called a Doula who will empower your decisions, support both you and your partner and ensure you have appropriate information at all time to make decisions rather than going along with what is suggested to manage your labour You may like to employ an Independent Midwife; this is normally the case if you especially wish to have a homebirth. They offer all your antenatal care too. A couple of flannels; in different colours, so you’ve got one for your top half and one for your bottom half. It makes life easier. Flannels could be used to keep your body cool, warm and sooth your tummy, warm the perineum when pushing, Straws – for putting into drinks so that if you are leaning forward it is easy to keep up your fluids without tipping your head at an angle. Lip salve – when you’re breathing effectively, or when you’re in the pushing stage and if you use gas and air, this is great to have to keep your lips from getting dry. Hypnosis CD – if you’ve been doing hypnobirthing, use your CDs in early and late labour, especially if you get ‘flappy’ at the transition stage. See our Hypnobirthing instructors for more support.Aromatherapy oils – Our advice to use essential oils in labour is not to burn them. If you suddenly don’t like the smell or it makes you sick, you can’t get rid of the smell easily. Put them in boiling water to diffuse into the air or on a tissue. ALWAYS check with an Aromatherapist before using oils appropriate to your pregnancy/birth. Homeopathy birth kit. Arnica – fantastic to help your body to “knit” back together after birth, if you’ve torn or need stitches. Best to get the 200c stuff. Ensure you see a Homeopath to get the appropriate homeopathic kits/remedies The information on this page is holistic opinion only, to get medical information or if you have any concerns, always see your midwife or GP.

Did You Know?

You could apply for a Badge for your car so you can park closer to stores if you suffer with SPD? Contact your local authority for more information. A have a permanent and substantial disability which means they cannot walk, or which makes walking very difficult If you are applying for a badge under this criterion you will need to show that: • you are unable to walk; or • you have a physical disability that means you are unable to walk

very far without experiencing severe discomfort; or • the physical effort needed to walk could damage your health Your

local authority will probably ask for you to be assessed by a medical professional, such as a physiotherapist or occupational therapist

Planning your Birth OptionsPutting together a plan for how you wish your labour and delivery will go is a good idea, we suggest you put together a contingency plan too. What if you want additional pain relief? What options would you like if you have an unplanned c-section?

Some things to think about and discuss with your partner, Doula and Midwife are below;

• Where would you like to have your baby? Hospital, birth centre, home?

• Who do you want as your birth partner(s)?

• Are there any methods you think would work particularly well for you?• What pain relieving methods are you happy to use? We suggest listing many

different ones and labelling them on a scale 1-10 of preference. Don’t forget that changing positions and adapting breathing techniques are also pain relieving.

• What are your opinions on induction of labour?• What are your thoughts on forms of delivery?• Does your partner want the option of cutting the cord?• Do you want to hold your baby immediately? If you are unable to have skin to

skin immediately do you want your partner to do this?• Do you want to breastfeed? Ensure you have ALL the information about

breastfeeding, how the delivery affects your baby’s natural instinct, the myths about ‘not enough breast milk’ etc.

• After the birth do you want a natural delivery of the placenta (physiological third stage) or the injection to expel it quickly?

These are just some of the questions you could ask yourself and discuss with all those involved. Your Doula and Midwife will have lots of information, statistics and articles you can request to make your decisions.

SO YOU ARE PREGNANT! Preparing for the birth

So you are having a baby! Fantastic, or maybe it’s been a bit of a surprise? Having a baby is the most wonderful thing, but also a huge responsibility. You are going to need support, so if possible try to involve your partner, your family and friends. It is important to see a midwife as soon as possible – many women think they have to see a doctor, and it is fine to see

your doctor if you wish, but you can just go straight to the midwife. Your local midwife will usually be found in the local doctor’s surgery, but sometimes also at Children’s Centres, you will usually be seen less often at the beginning and then more frequently as the pregnancy progresses. Don’t feel that any question is daft - it isn’t a daft question if you don’t know the answer! Mums and friends can be great and really supportive, but they may not always have the correct information, and you can ask anything in complete confidence. A midwife is expert in pregnancy and birth and will help you throughout the pregnancy, birth and early days of parenting. She will also help you make decisions and support you in your wishes. During the pregnancy it may be suggested that you take supplements and you will also be offered various tests and you will be asked to see the midwife regularly so that she can make sure that both you and the baby are well; use the appointments to ask any questions you may have. You should also be offered some antenatal or parent craft classes which can be variable in quality, so consider NCT (the National Childbirth Trust) or active birth classes as well, they can be an opportunity to make friends with other expectant mums – often the friends made in these groups stay friends for years to come with the babies growing up together – it can be very supportive to be able to ask a friend “is this normal?”, “did your baby do this?” It is really worth reading all you can about birth and babies. Your midwife will give you lots of information, but you can also go to the local library and borrow books. There are also sometimes local discussion groups, for example at Surestart Children’s Centres, NCT and Meet a Mum (MAMA), La Leche League and Association of Breastfeeding Mothers (ABM) both breastfeeding support groups may also have meetings to which pregnant women are invited – you midwife may know what is available locally or ask in the library.

BIRTH 13

Page 14: The Maternity Network Summer Directory

www.thematernitynetwork.co.ukwww.thematernitynetwork.co.uk www.thematernitynetwork.co.uk

Giving birth is a bit like running a marathon – it is one of the hardest day’s work you will ever do, so if you are relatively fit that helps (I don’t mean that you should be exercising hard, but gentle exercise like walking and swimming is good).

There may also be pregnancy yoga or aqua natal sessions in your area and both will be helpful to you. If you already exercise there is probably no reason why you shouldn’t continue, but don’t overdo it and ask your midwife for advice. Other strategies include learning self-hypnosis or ‘hypnobirthing’ techniques and seeing complementary therapists such as acupuncturists, homoeopaths, Reflexologists, chiropractors etc throughout the pregnancy. Sit on a dining chair, but sit on it backwards, with your legs open and facing the chair back – this is great because it keeps you in a nice upright position, opens your pelvis and tips the baby forward. If you slouch backwards onto the sofa it tends to tip the baby towards your back and this can make labour longer and more difficult. If you have access to an exercise or birthing ball these too are great to sit on for the same reason – you can sit on a chair or ball and watch TV or even read a book! Some women prepare for the birth by gently massaging their perineum (this is the area of skin between the vagina and the anus). If this is something that you think you might be able to do ask your midwife for more information about how to do this. You also need to start considering where you want to give birth. Depending upon where you live you may have several options: at home, in a birthing unit or in a hospital – again this is something to discuss with your midwife. The Antenatal Classes or Parentcraft Classes are available and you should be able to take along your partner or your Mum or a friend if you wish. The classes should give you lots of information about what to expect when you go into labour. The class may well also organise a visit to your local maternity unit so that everything can be explained to you – it is far less scary if you know what the place looks like and what machines are used for! Sometimes a Mum will come along with her baby and a feeding or bathing demonstration may be given. The midwife will also talk about how you can help yourself during the birth - I would really encourage you to go along!

Shorten Labour with a Birth Doula

Doula’s have practical methods that support you and the members of your family in the preparation for labour, throughout your birth experience and when you have your new arrival.

You might expect to book a birth or postnatal package with your Doula with includes everything you would need for physical and emotional care. The support you might expect to be offered offer before, during and after your birth is included in a Birth Doula Package. Once you have chosen your ideal birth companion and your partner has met and got along well, you can book your Birth Doula at any time of your Pregnancy. It is normally around the third trimester when you would get together to discuss your birth preferences, pain relief, positions effective at each stage of labour, the level your partner would like to be involved and how to involve them, the options for third stage and what you would like to happen immediately after the birth. Your Doula will be available by phone or email to offer support and information throughout your pregnancy. From week 38 your Doula available 24 hours a day should you go into labour from the 38th week of your pregnancy and up to two weeks after your due date. During your labour she will empower your decisions and do my best to ensure your wishes are met during labour. After the birth she will stay with you after birth for as long as is necessary to ensure all your needs are met. You might expect to see your Doula twice which is an opportunity to discuss your birth experience, ensure that you are supported with the method you have decided to feed your baby.

A Doula Uk Birth Doula trainee is likely to charge £150 and a Recognised Doula UK Birth Doula may charge between £500-£700 depending on additional services and experience.

Please be aware that Doula’s are non-medical support and do not speak to midwives on your behalf, we simply offer information and support when needed.

Carla Sturt is a Birth Doula in Buckinghamshire. I travel to Wexham Park, High Wycombe, Stoke Mandeville, Watford, Hillingdon and home births.
