WINTER IS COMING

This term we ’Grow, Dig, Eat’! Join our dedicated

Seeds and Seedlings Swap on Saturday 19

September from 10.00 am to 1.00 pm.

Bring in your seeds and seedlings to swap, listen to

gardening tips, learn more about community gardens

and get a taste of what you could grow and harvest

yourself with our Bushtucker Show and Tell. Also

immerse yourself in the sounds of singer, songwriter

and performer Tom Fisher.

Grow, Dig Eat will be the first of many learning

opportunities that are part of Linkwest’s 30 Days/

30Ways, a state-wide Beyond Gambling Program

supported by Linkwest, the Department of Local Government and Communities and the Department

of Racing, Gaming and Liquor.

30 Days/30 Ways aims to tackle the issue of problem

social gambling at the grassroots level and provide

information, support and alternative activities.

Over the next four terms we will be providing a range

of activities, which foster a healthy and happy

community that is aware of the range of issues

gambling can have on the individual, families and the

community.

Enrolments open 22 June 2015. In some instances

classes are run by private tutors, who set their own

prices and require separate bookings. Otherwise

book online via our website

THE BEELIAR WETLANDS – OUR

CULTURAL, HISTORIC AND

ECOLOGICAL TREASURE Join Kate Kelly, convener of Save Beeliar Wetlands,

co-convener of Rethink Perth Freight Link and learn

more about the cultural, historic and ecological

treasure right on Fremantle’s doorstep. The wetlands

and uplands of Coolbellup, Bibra Lake and North Lake

are rich in mythological and archaeological history and

are crucial habitat for a variety of wildlife. With future

development planned in the region find out why the

Beeliar Wetlands are worth saving.

FAMILIES Learning how to swim is a lifesaving skill. Last year 266

people drowned in Australia; 30 were kids under the

age of 12. While no child is drown-proof you can learn

how to make your environment safer. Join Renee

Moran of State Swim WA and learn how swimming

lessons address any safety issues and enable your child

or grandchild to become an efficient swimmer while

having fun and staying fit.

LIFE WITH EPILEPSY Did you know around 800,000 Australians suffer from

epilepsy at some stage of their life? It may be a

neighbour, colleague, friend or family member, but

most people don’t talk about epilepsy openly. Join

local resident Samantha Hall, who grew up with

epilepsy, and is now a volunteer speaker with Epilepsy

Action Australia to help reduce the social stigma

associated with the disease. Learn the basics of this

brain condition, how to respond if someone is having a

seizure and how you can help make a positive

difference for those affected.

Join Fremantle cartoonist and illustrator James Foley

on a journey through your favourite genres. Learn how

to draw cartoon werewolves and vampires from the

world of monsters; how to draw cartoon aliens and

robots from the world of sci-fi; and how to draw

cartoon dragons, elves, princesses and wizards from

the world of fantasy. Each week you’ll visit a different

cartoon world, with the fourth week dedicated to

creating original comics based on your characters.

The Fremantle Volunteer Service provides access to volunteer opportunities in the

Fremantle area.

If you would like information on available positions, or are an organisation in need of

volunteers, the Fremantle Volunteer Service can help. You can also search online for

Each month Fremantle Volunteer Service produce a list of new and urgent volunteer

opportunities in the Fremantle area. There are lots of fun, interesting, varied positions

featured, have a look online: fremantle.wa.gov.au/fvs.

AGENCY SPOTLIGHTS

Join the Conservation Volunteers for a day or two in the beautiful

bushlands of Perth. You could be planting, removing invasive species,

undertaking survey work or rehabilitating a site. You can be at a different

location each day and could be anywhere along the coast, the Swan and

Canning Rivers or in the Perth Hills.

Lifeline WA is currently seeking volunteers to assist in the

running of a unique mobile coffee van concept, Bean Talkin’. As a

Bean Talkin’ volunteer you will receive accredited barista training

and each volunteer will grow and expand their skills in the

Hospitality industry gaining invaluable experience that will be

recognised in years to come. Staffed by volunteers, Bean Talkin’

is deployed at Lifeline WA fundraising events, as well as at

music concerts and festivals.

Work one on one with a child within school hours to help inspire and guide

students through The School Volunteer Programme. Volunteers do not need

specific qualifications to apply, just an ability to listen and empathise and have

a sincere interest in helping young people succeed.
