April 2017

Pastoral Letter April 2017 With great sadness I write to tell you that at the end of this month Rev-erend Anne Evans is retiring as our Ordained Local Minister. We have been fortunate that, since her ordination in 2005, Anne has been our Ordained Local Minister in these parishes of Myddle, Brough-ton, Loppington and Newtown. Prior to her ministry here Reverend Anne has been a lay Reader working in Whixall, Tilstock and Ed-staston, and Wem, and has also worked for the Diocese of Lichfield in the Youth Ministry Department. Anne has taken services across our group of churches and will be par-ticularly missed in Broughton where she has regularly led their monthly Evensong, a service she particularly enjoys. On two occasions, whilst the group was in interregnum (waiting for a new Priest), I have been assured Anne held the fort admirably, co-operating with Churchward-ens to ensure all services were covered and nobody missed out. Anne has also had an active pastoral ministry, mainly in the parish of Loppington, in which she and her husband Richard lived until they moved to Welshampton. I am sure there are many people who will want to thank Anne for all she has done here during these many years of devoted ministry, espe-cially those whom she married or baptised and the families of those whose funeral services she has led, particularly in Loppington parish. Hopefully, when Anne has taken six months well-earned rest, we may see her again in a slightly different role but you are all invited to attend her last service as our Ordained Local Minister. It’s on 30th April in Loppington church. This is the fifth Sunday in the month so it will be a

‘Group Service’, when congregations from all four churches and

Our Flower Fes;val 16/17/18 June in Myddle

Church will feature Myddle and surrounding

areas Past, Present and Future.

We will be depicting Gough’s walks of the 17th Century & the modern villages of today – Richard

Gough may even be sitting in his pew! There will be floral and other displays, a Canapes & Concert evening and a Festival of Praise. Many people are already in-volved and we would love to hear from any individual or groups who would like to be part of this exciting weekend. We need help with flowers, displays, lifting things into place, cake making and serving teas, stewarding, and many other things. If you would like to get involved, get in touch with Linda on 01939 290094 or Chris on 01939 290813. They would love to hear from you.

GOUGH WALKS Tuesday 11th April 2017

(Theme of our forthcoming Flower Festival)

Come and join us as we follow in Richard Gough’s foot-steps around his patch. We are starting with the shortest of the Gough Walks (1.5 miles) starting in the Car Park of Harmer Hill Village Hall at

6.30 pm.(please wear sensible footwear and clothing in case of inclement weather).

Let us wander and see what has changed since Gough followed the same path whilst musing about his parishioners in the late 17th

Century.

We could even finish in the pub for some liquid refreshment! ALL WELCOME (including children with accompanying parent/adult.)

Watch this space for another Gough Walk in May! Contact Chris Williams on 01939 290813 for further information.

Harmer Hill & District WI

Our Vice President, Angela Foulsham, was in the Chair for the March meeting and opened the meeting by inviting

members to sing Jerusalem.

The schedule for our Spring Show on the 13th April was available and members were urged to enter as many classes as possible. Items should be taken to Harmer Hill Village Hall between 11am and 1pm on the day.

The Shropshire WI News was perused for events: 2 Spring Lunches would be held this year one in the South and one in the North of the county; a Speakers Day audition session was programmed for May 8th and there would be a Spring Ramble at Bucknell on 6th May. Our speaker for the evening was Michael Theobolds, a retired Head-master and Ofsted Inspector. His subject was St. Helena, and very few of us knew where it was. Michael told us it is a volcanic island in the South Atlantic which is a British Overseas Territory between Africa and Brazil, approximate size 8 miles by 7 miles. It is mostly dry barren rock with little vegetation or trees. The British Government had made a grant of £1 million to improve the standard of education on the island. Michael was asked to go there as a Trainer, initially for 1 month. He was then asked to go again for 1 year to suggest ways of improving education standards. The money had apparently not been spent wise-ly!

It takes a week to get to St. Helena, flying first to Cape Town and then taking the Royal Mail Ship “St. Helena” which takes 5 days to reach the island. Very little is made or grown there and 90% of food has to be transported in on the Mail Ship. Michael said it is not a third world country but hasn’t moved on from the 1960’s. 70% of the inhabitants are employed by the government, dependent on our money. An airport was built at a cost of £280 million a few years ago but is unusable be-cause of the strong cross winds.

Napoleon was exiled there in 1815 and detained in a building which is now a museum. He wasn’t enamoured by the island because the weather was wet, warm and humid. He died on the island in 1821. Our next meeting will be the Spring Show on Thursday April 13th in the Village Hall at 7.30 pm. There will be a Bring & Buy stall and a presen-tation by the Blood Bikes. Visitors are very welcome.

News from the School – April 2017 The sun is shining and we are enjoying our Forest School area again after all the rain. We’ve been busy with books this term with a Scholastic Book Fair back in January, World Book Day in Febru-ary where the children and staff dressed as their favourite book characters for the day and a sponsored read and listen led by Mrs Cathy Cooke of Usborne Books. Waste Week had us looking at the waste we produce, where it goes and how we can reduce it. Our Y6 pupils held a competition for the best junk models. The children have had a fantastic time on the Easter Trail with Tesco where they got to taste some hot cross buns. We are looking forward to our pilgrimage around St Peter’s Church on Thursday 6th April at 10.30am and our annual Easter Egg hunt around the school. Our sporting pupils have been taking part in several different events and a big well done goes to Charlie Parker who qualified for L2 of the School Games Cross Country Event and our Hi5 players who won their friendly against Baschurch. We are look-ing forward to Dodgeball, New Age Kurling and Arrows Archery which all sound like good fun. Our PTA recently organised a craft evening which was great fun and produced and array of rabbits and foxes! Our thanks to everyone who attended and to Gill Harris for organising this event. After the Easter Break our KS1 topic will be Weather while our KS2 pupils will be studying rivers, poetry, living things and the human body.
