The Proper Distinction Between Death and Life

Christ is risen, Alleluia! A blessed Eastertide to you, one

and all. It came to my attention through the usual little birdies that some hearers of Easter Sunday's sermon

were too distracted by the grotesque nature of certain stories. This newsletter is an attempt to answer that

complaint while being sensitive to the sensibilities of those folks. If you were not at St. Paul Easter morning and did not hear the sermon, you can find it online as usual at www.stpaulalbion.org. Click on "The Word" window

and look for "Resurrection of Our Lord."

I know. It was gross. Three full examples of dead bodies is disgusting. I will throw you a bone and say that it is very possible your disgust was justified if it distracted you from the second half of the sermon. Years ago, in

seminary, I heard a sermon with a very disturbing analogy in it that served the purpose of the sermon perfectly.

However, so many people were distracted by its grotesque imagery that its sermonic force backfired on the preacher. To this day, even though that sermon was beautifully constructed, that poor professor gets teased for

his grotesque analogy. So I get it. I really do. If you were one who did not like the sermon because of the dis-turbing nature of those three examples, you simply reacted viscerally and naturally. But full disclosure: that was

the point.

A preacher takes a chance every time he steps into the pulpit. Some hear what he means, others hear what he

didn't mean, still others can't get over the fact that he's so loud or that he drinks too much coffee. Whatever the reason, once the words leave the preacher's mouth, he has little control over them. I took a chance with these

dead bodies, knowing full well there could be some casualties of sensibility. Seriously, go ahead and blame me. I preach sixty times a year; I can take the criticism and just try something different next time.

Now for the justification: it was not just to gross you out, but to set you up for relief. Those stories, as I re-peated again and again, was to show that death is "disgusting, demonic, and destructive. It is an enemy to be

destroyed [1 Cor 15:26], it is not your friend." Isaiah 66 depicts a field of heaped-up burning bodies. Ezekiel 37 depicts a valley of bones coming back to life. The Gospels depict Jesus beaten and scourged. You cannot fully

appreciate the glory of the resurrection without appreciating the enemy of death.

Thus, the goal of the sermon was to plunge you into a disgusting portrait of vile imagery. I was trying to disgust you. I wanted you to squirm and make faces and feel sick to your stomach. Because without the Law of God convicting you and killing you you cannot have the sweet, sweet relief of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. A cool drink

of water is infinitely more refreshing to a man with a desert-parched tongue than for someone who isn't thirsty

at all. I go for the jugular: if you aren't thirsty, I will try to make you thirsty. I am not a fan of didactic recita-tions of theological truths from the pulpit; I am a fan of the hearers experiencing the Word of God.

After the disgust of death, then comes the glorious refrain: Alleluia! Christ is risen! Don't stop with, "Oh, yuck. I

can't listen to this crazy preacher." Listen to the cure! Don't stop until death is swallowed up in victory! Don't stop until Christ places all things under his feet in power and glory! Don't stop preaching the Gospel of the

promise of the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come! Give the drink of life to the parched

soul and watch it revive and live! Live! Live!

Jesus said he did not come to heal the well, but the sick. Try to sell a bag of ice to an Eskimo, or a ketchup pop-sicle to a woman in white gloves. That's what it's like preaching the Gospel to someone who doesn't under-

stand—or doesn't want to understand—the vile problem of sin and death. Not only is it confounding the Law

and the Gospel, putting the cart before the horse, but it downplays the full significance of sin and death in favor of politeness and sensibilities. Frankly, if you want feel good sermons week in and week out, don't listen to me.

Turn on Joel Osteen or some other television junk. I will never cease in my attempts to make the Word of God as real and visceral for you as it is to me.

So there you have it: I fully admit that the stories may have been too graphic, so long as you admit that you

may be in denial over death's true grotesqueries. The Law kills and the Gospel makes alive. In the sermon, you

must be cut open and allowed to bleed for a little until you realize the great need to be stitched up and healed. And when you are, oh how sweet is the sound of that glorious resurrection story! Alleluia! Christ is risen!

—Pastor

News from Little Lambs of Jesus Preschool & Childcare Center Greetings again from the Center, Thank you God for the opportunity to openly share the story of Easter with our children. The preschoolers listened with great interest as Mrs. Farley told of the events that led to Jesus’ death and resurrection. She “cleaned” up the actions so as not to frighten anyone, but still got the story told. Many of the kids went home and

shared this story with their families. That’s how easy it is. We hear, we share, and then others hear too. Simple.

All of the kids enjoyed that little burst of spring weather we had a week ago. It was great to be outside yelling, running, etc. without being told to “quiet down.” We are still planning on doing the new playground for our youngest kids, watch for ways to help with that. They need their own little safe place to play.

We continue to bust at the seams, in a good way. We have several on a waiting list for all rooms. As we work on figuring out ways to accommodate more kids, we pray these families find quality care in other cen-ters. We are due for licensing renewal in June. Filling out paperwork, making plans, paying fees, etc, have kept us busy on top of everything else. We pray the state ok’s all changes and we can move forward with gusto!

Thank you to everyone who participated in our Euchre Tournament. The people had fun and we profited over $225. Please see the list in the Roving Reporters’ article listing all the generous donors we had. They were so eager to help. Go Albion! Speaking of generous… Mike Slaughter came up and installed new weather stripping on our doors and installed “peep holes” in 4 doors. Thank you for doing that. It makes a huge difference in the rooms not having that cold air coming in. The “peep holes” are another safety meas-ure we have decided to do. I am sad to say that our new security system is not in place yet. We waited for a company to install it, they messed around with me too much so I found another company to do it. Now we are waiting to get on their schedule. Hopefully that happens soon. The generosity was abundant this month. Roger Weston was up here and installed 14 mini blinds for us. It took him some time to get those done, making him late to pick up his wife….. Sorry, Betty. Thank you to both Roger and Betty for all the things you do for us, we love you so much! Dolores, we loved the goodies that you sent. We tried sharing with the kids, but some of the cookies sorta disappeared. Carolyn, the tissues/wipes came in handy with all the germs we’ve been fighting.

Lord, we thank you for our center. We thank you for our families. We thank you for our staff. We thank you for our supporters, each and everyone of them. Thank you Lord, for everything. We are doing our best to work hard for your kingdom.

In Christ, Jenny

Why is the Easter season fifty days long?

Called Pascha in Eastern Churches, Easter, the resurrection of Christ

from the dead, is the heart of the Christian faith and Easter Sunday and the Easter season celebrate this fact.

Easter for Christians is not just one day, but rather a 50-day period. The

season of Easter, or Eastertide, begins at sunset on the eve of Easter and ends on Pentecost, the day we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit and birth of the Church

(see Acts 2).

Easter is also more than just an extended celebration of the resurrection of Jesus.

In the early church, Lent was a season for new converts to learn about the faith

and prepare for baptism on Easter Sunday. The initial purpose of the 50-day Easter season was to continue the faith formation of new Christians.

Today, this extended season gives us time to rejoice and experience what it means when we say Christ is risen. It’s the season when we remember our baptisms.

Throughout this time you will hear a lot of “alleluias” during the worship service to

express the joy we feel at Christ’s resurrection. This is a time to reflect on, cele-brate, and most importantly live the new life in Christ and his triumph over death.

Here at St. Paul we have been blessed with wonderful buildings and grounds, and we want to use them to the glory of God and in service to our neighbors in the community. To make sure everyone

is able to do this and not conflict with one another, our Trustees have developed a Building Use Form. The purpose of this form is to avoid conflicts between users and to enhance the usability of our facilities for all members. If you wish to schedule the use of Luther Hall, the kitchen, classrooms, or the sanctuary, please pick up a Building Use Form, fill it out, and turn it in. In many cases, your event and date can be approved immediately and added to the church calendar, ensuring that another user will not conflict with your event. We want our members to get as much use out of our facilities as possible and this form is one way to let that happen.
