Pastoral Reflections by Father Costas

“There are many members, yet one body… Now

YOU are the Body of Christ.” ~ 1 Corinthians 12:20, 27 This phrase from St. Paul describes the Church as the Body of Christ, and yet within the Church

there are many members who make up this Body. You and I as Christians are called to work together as the Body of Christ, as one, in harmony and love with each other, for the glory of God in whatever work we do. I want to reflect on this idea from St. Paul as we all prepare to celebrate OUR ANNUAL ST. PAUL

GREECIAN FESTIVAL, JULY 19-22. Each year this is a major event for our community from several perspectives. First of all, I love to see the Christian fellowship that prevails on this weekend. It is so beautiful to see so many of our Church family members offer their time and talents at the Festival. Some members, like all those who have been a part of our Festival Committee, have been working for many months baking and preparing. Many others will work hard and put in lots of hours during the days of the Festival. Hopefully, every member of our Church Family will offer their time and talents for the glory of God. We know what a major undertaking, such as the festival, cannot be done by a few. It takes an entire parish doing their part, whenever they can, to support our community and its ministries for the glory of God! Of course, I also love that during our Festival we have the opportunity to witness our faith to the southern suburbs of Cleveland. We have a wonderful chance to show all those that attend our festival that we truly are a loving Church family. As Orthodox Christians, we understand that the two greatest commandments of our Lord Jesus are to love the Lord our God above all else, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. Throughout the Festival let us try to make love the overriding spirit of the weekend, even by the end of the day when we all can become especially tired. A final perspective we all have to remember about our Festival is that it helps bring in a substantial amount of income that supports our annual budget. We count on this money to help supplement the overall stewardship of our Church members. Thus, please do your best to invite and encourage all your family, friends, co-workers, and neighbors to come and

support our festival. You can promise them great food, great fun, great fellowship, and a great time! If you don’t know where you can offer your help and volunteer yet, please go to: http://stpaulgoc.org/festival/, to see what areas of the festival need assistance. Use the SignUpGenious, and sign up in whatever area you want to help. Please note: we still need someone to chair the coffee and kalamari stations. I look forward to seeing all you there, as we come together as one big family to offer our help at our 2018 St. Paul Grecian Festival.

Supplication Service Paraklesis Service

During the first 13 days of August, the beautiful Supplication Service to the

Virgin Mary is chanted. At the conclusion of this service, the priest prays for the health and well being of all who are present and reads the names for the living that are submitted. Please take a few moments to complete the form below and return it to the office by August 1st. PLEASE PRINT the FIRST names of your family members so the priests can pray for them.

~ Eleni Johnson, Dance Director

It is hard to believe that another year has flown by and it is time for another festival. This year’s dance group is so excited to show off what they have worked so hard all year to accomplish and hope to see you all under the tent!!

A COUPLE LAST MINUTE BUSINESS ITEMS: New this year: Our annual Dance Photo will be taken on Sunday July 15 at the conclusion of Liturgy. Please note the date change. In addition to the photo on July 15 we will also have a year end pizza party for our dancers. Following the lunch, we will hold practice. We ask for your patience since that will be a long day. Beginner girls: Please plan on picking up your dancer’s costume on Sunday July 15 in order to loosely stitch the bottom hem to fit your daughter. Directions on that will come with your costume. All dancers should be wearing dance shoes to all the remaining practices. The week of the festival is not the time to have to break in new dance shoes. Parent help is always needed in the fitting rooms before and after each performance (even with the older dancers). Junior and Beginner parents please plan on being with your dancer to assist in the fitting rooms every time they are changing. Senior Group parents please look for an email to sign up to help with that group as well. Many hands are needed after our final performance to check in all the costume pieces before they go to the drycleaners. If you are willing to help with this task please let your instructor know as soon as possible. VERY IMPORTANT – if you have not told your instructors about any performances that your dancer will be missing, please do so immediately. The instructors spend many hours finalizing line ups and when a dancer is not at a performance, adjustments need to be made. It is very difficult to have to make those adjustments at the last minute.

PLEASE NOTE THE LAST FEW PRACTICE DATES:

Sunday, July 1—Immediately following liturgy ~ All groups

Sunday, July 8—Immediately following liturgy ~ All groups

Sunday, July 15—Immediately following photo and party ~ All groups

Wednesday, July 18—Under the tent Beginner Group ~ 5:45 – 7:00 PM Junior Group ~ 7:00 – 8:15 PM Seniors ~ 8:00 – 9:00 PM

Finally, I wanted to share the 2018 performance schedule:

Thursday, July 19 7:00 PM ~ Beginners 8:00 PM ~ Juniors 8:30 PM ~ Seniors

Friday, July 20 4:30 PM ~ Seniors 7:00 PM ~ Beginners 8:00 PM ~ Juniors 9:00 PM ~ Seniors 9:45 PM ~ Young Adults

Sunday, July 22 5:00 PM ~ Young Adults 7:30 PM ~ Beginners / Juniors / Seniors

And finally I want to say again that the St. Paul Hellenic Dance program would not be possible without the entire St. Paul community’s support and we look forward to entertaining you under the tent at this year’s festival!!!

~ Kathy Glaros Greek School Superintendent

I hope this update finds you enjoying a relaxing and fun-filled summer! The summer goes by very quickly and before you know it, we will be back at school once again.

Our Greek School Summer Camp was very successful. Everyone enjoyed this meaningful program and all the children had the opportunity to see what we offer and what we do to preserve the Greek Language and culture. I would like to thank the coordinators Mrs. Annoula Tsonton, Mrs. Kelly Paragios, and Mrs. Maria Lovejoy and all the past graduates for their tireless work to make the program so successful. Also to Fr. Costas for spending time with our children— his support and encouraging words meant a lot to us. Thank you all ~ we couldn't have done it without you!

At the end of the school year we had to say goodbye to Mr. George Themelis who served as a teacher for more than 25 years. His service and dedication was valued and very much appreciated. We wish him well as he moves on to retirement!

As we are nearing another school year, I would like to remind you the importance of signing up your children early. Early registration will gets us started much quicker and more efficiently. We offer Greek classes for grades in K—6th as well as adult classes, depending upon enrollment.

Greek School begins September 10th and runs through the end of May every Monday from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM

PLEASE NOTE: Tuition fees are due at the time of registration—no exceptions!

For more information, please check our website www.stpaul.org or call the church office at 440.237.8998 or you may contact me directly at 216.524.1766. Please visit our table on September 16th at the Parish Fair to meet our teachers, view our curriculum and learn more about our school. Registration forms will also be available.

Enjoy the remaining days of summer and I look forward to welcoming you all back refreshed for what will be an exciting new school year.

CHAPTER CHALLENGE TEAM FINISHES STRONG The Chapter Challenge team sponsored their final event when they provided dinner for the Ronald McDonald Ho use ~ Cleveland. The chicken dinner, made by our very own Frank Langos, and Greek delicacies, donated by our wonderful crew, were a big hit at the house. Kim Kontos, Tessie Lekas, Mary Pagonakis, Betty Rossi, and Olympia Sarris heated the food and served it to the residents. These beautiful women also spent time with a Greek resident who hails from North Carolina. She has experienced various transplants in her 22 years and loved the Greek touch to her meal. A huge thank you to the Chapter Challenge team for your year of donations, time, and enthusiasm. You truly took our chapter to new heights allowing us to accomplish our mission of helping the needy, sick and poor.

AFGHANS Thank you to Maria Pistiolas for a lovely baby afghan and donation of yarn and Maria Lovejoy for one beautiful baby afghan. Please knit/crochet in washable yarn (baby 30” x 36”/adult 40” x 48”).
