When I first

came to El

Paso 29 years

ago, I met Henry Kellen. It was

a life changing experience. I

was here only a few days when

he called me and welcomed me

to the community. He told me

that he wanted to show me

some of the places in El Paso.

He picked me up at the syna-

gogue and the first place he

brought me to was the JCC. As

soon as we entered the build-

ing, he introduced me to every-

one and then directed me to a

room in which he had collected

several artifacts regarding the

Holocaust. This one classroom

was the forerunner of today’s

El Paso Holocaust Museum. I

will never forget the passion

that Henry exhibited at that

initial meeting. To a great

extent I might say that the rest

is history. I remember vividly

the day that we dedicated the

El Holocaust Museum in the

building next to the JCC.

Thanks to the generosity of

Louis and Miriam Rosenbaum, I

stood with pride next to Henry

as tears rolled down his face as

Sister Rose Thering of Seton

Hall University offered a prayer

of universal peace and I chant-

ed the “Shecheyanu” as we

placed a Mezuzah on the door

of the museum. I recall Henry

returning the Torah that was

rescued by a farmer during the

Holocaust and how Henry gave

it to the museum. I will never

forget how Henry and I worked

together to bring every high

school student in El Paso to a

private showing of “Schindler’s

List.” Before every presentation

of the film, both Henry and I

took turns in leading a discus-

sion with the thousands of El

Paso students who had never

heard of the Holocaust before

we created that project. Up

until illness prevented Henry

from doing so, he came to my

class at UTEP to teach the

students about his experiences

and the significance of the

Shoah.

Now I thank God that Sara

Hauptman, another hero of

mine, continues to speak at

UTEP, and also to thousands of

El Pasoans in schools, at Ft.

Bliss, at churches and other

places.

For more than a decade,

Henry established a relation-

ship with students at Cochise

College in Douglas, AZ. The

students would spend a whole

day in El Paso, driving 5 hours,

come to B’nai Zion where I

would teach them about Juda-

ism, followed by lunch at the

synagogue, then a visit to the

Museum where Henry would

speak to them. Not only did

they learn so much from Henry,

they loved him as a person.

These are just a few of the

many accomplishments of

Henry Kellen.

I speak of him this month

because we observe the re-

membrance of Kristallnacht

every November. Henry Kellen

was one of those people most

responsible for inspiring each

of us not to forget Kris-

tallnacht. I speak of Henry this

month because we observe

Thanksgiving and I thank God for giving me the

privilege and honor of having known and being

blessed by Henry Kellen. I speak of Henry Kellen this

month because I love him and I miss him terribly.

Each of us has a responsibility to make sure that we

continue his fine work, teaching one another “Never

Forget.” May we continue, as well, to teach tolerance

to the bigoted, love to those that show hatred, kind-

ness to those who hurt, and passion for those who

have become indifferent.

We have lost several wonderful members of our

congregation recently. They laid the groundwork for

us today and for our children and grandchildren. May

we continue to be dedicated and active members of

our synagogue and community for their sake and for

the future of the El Paso Jewish Community. May their

memories be for a blessing. Amen.

Zion here? What place does our congregation have

in my daily secular and spiritual life? What role

should I play in building our community? The

answers that each of us give to these questions will

define the future Congregation B’nai Zion.

I wholeheartedly believe that the future looks

bright. I am optimistic because I can see the com-

mitment and the positive response to the call for

action from the members of our board and from

members of our congregation at large. These are

people that see the enormous value of having a

vibrant Congregation B’nai Zion and are actively

participating in making it happen. Consider this

message as a call to join us in the very worthy task

of building the Congregation B’nai Zion that we all

need and want.

President, Congregation B’nai Zion

It is incredible how time really

flies. Here we are once again at the

beginning of a new year that I hope

will be full of joyous moments for

all of you. I want to thank Rabbi

Leon for creating an exceptional

experience for all of us through the

beautiful High Holiday services. This is something

that we have come to expect from him, however, this

time he surprised us with a Yom Kippur sermon that

was truly memorable. Many congregation members

mentioned to me how pleasantly surprised they were

by the voluntary, unrehearsed participation of various

members of our congregation during the sermon.

They poured out their heart in front of all of us and

reminded us of why we are here, why Congregation

B’nai Zion is here.

For this year it is my hope that all of us can look

into our hearts and find our own personal answers to

the following questions: Why is Congregation B’nai

If you did not receive these emails, an incorrect email address may have been used. Please call the shul to update your email address for the ShulCloud Portal if you did not receive the emails.

By now you should have received your new Sisterhood Directory. We hope you will use it as a quick reference guide, and support all the advertisers.

Many thanks to Blanca Carrasco for coordi-nating this project, to Sandy Dula for reaching out to our advertisers, to Annalie Rollins for her help with the database, and to Joan Korn for doing the bookkeeping and for her keen eye in proofing the book.

Please let the office know of any changes to your information during the year. This book is only as accurate as the information we have in our database.

presents: “Verdi’s Requiem: Resistance and

Redemption at Terezin – A Holocaust Story

As the last note ended, the famed conductor turned

to face the applause of the audience, but he did not bow. Instead, he stood stock-still and proudly straight. Rafael Schachter would perform for the Nazi’s, but he would not accept their accolades.

This moving and courageous story will be retold as El Paso Holocaust and Study Center presents Verdi’s Requiem: Resistance and Redemption – A Story of the Holocaust on Saturday, November 8, 2014 at

8:00 pm. This very special performance will held at the Plaza Theater and all proceeds raised from the event will support the Museum’s mission to educate our community on the dangers of hate and advocate

for a more peaceful future.
