Army

Function: Protection and defense by use of ground troops

Facts: Largest branch of the US military. Approximately 76,000 officers and 401,000 enlisted members.

Reserve components: Army Reserve and Army National Guard.

Organization/chain of command: Squads, Platoons, Companies, Battalions, Brigades, Divisions, and Corps

Air Force

Function: Defend the United States (and its interests) through exploitation of air and space.

Facts: Prior to 1947, the Air Force was a separate Corps of the Army. 69,000 commissioned officers on active duty in the Air Force, and about 288,000 enlisted members. Army (along with Navy) was officially established by the Continental Congress in 1775.

Reserve Components: active duty Air Force is supplemented by the Air Force Reserves, and the Air National Guard.

Organization/chain of command: Flights, Squadrons, Groups, Wings, Numbered Air Forces, and Major Commands

Navy

Function: Navy is also primarily responsible for transporting Marines to areas of conflict. Protection of seas foreign and domestic.

Facts: Navy was officially established by the Continental Congress in 1775. Navy has about 54,000 officers, and 324,000 enlisted personnel.

side” or “blue side”

Marine Corps

Function: Marines specialize in amphibious operations. Their specialty is to assault, capture, and control "beach heads," which then provide a route to attack the enemy from almost any direction.

Facts: In 1798, however, Congress established the Marine Corps as a separate service. While amphibious operations are their primary specialty, in recent years, the Marines have expanded other ground-combat operations, as well. For example, there are no doctors, nurses, or enlisted medics in the Marine Corps. Even medics that accompany the Marines into combat are specially-trained Navy medics. 18,000 officers and 153,000 enlisted personnel on active duty in the Marines.

Reserve Components: Marines are supported in times of need by the Marine Corps Reserves.

Coast Guard

Function: Peacetime: Primary concern is law enforcement, boating safety, sea rescue, and illegal immigration control. War time: President can transfer part or all of the coast guard to the Navy.

Facts: The Coast Guard is the smallest military service, with about 7,000 officers and 29,000 enlisted on active duty. Prior to 2002 the Coast Guard belonged to the Department of Transportation. It is now part of the Department of Homeland Security.

Reserve Components: Coast Guard Reserve

The military budget is that portion of the discretionary United States federal budget that is allocated to the Department of Defense, or more broadly, the portion of the budget that goes to any military-related expenditures. This military budget pays the salaries, training, and health care of uniformed and civilian personnel, maintains arms, equipment and facilities, funds operations, and develops and buys new equipment. The budget funds all branches of the U.S. military: the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard.

World War 1 November 1918, over 350,000 African Americans had served with the American Expeditionary Force on

the Western Front.

The most 369th Infantry Regiment, known as the "Harlem Hellfighters", which was on the front lines for six months, longer than any other American unit in the war. 171 members of the 369th were awarded the Legion of Merit.

1917 First black officer commissioner. Graduated form west point stationed at fort des Moines Iowa.

WW2 There were 125,000 African Americans who were overseas in World War II.

Notable units- The Tuskegee Airmen first black fighter pilots: never lost on bomber they were escorting - 761st tank battalion

In 1948, President Harry Truman issued Executive Order 9981, which outlawed racial discrimination in the military.

Asian Americans

In the U.S. Army, Asian-Americans have typically volunteered at the lowest rate of any ethnic group. They make up 4 percent of the population, and only 1 percent of military recruits.

Women and the military today

In 2011, a  study by the Pew Research Center found that black women are enlisting in the military at far higher rates than are white or Hispanic women,

Now represent nearly a third of all the women in the armed forces.

Women are joining the military in record numbers at the same time that the military is seeing less people enlist overall.

From 1973 to 2010 the number of active duty enlisted women in the military grew from about 42,000 to 167,000.

In contrast, white women represent 53 percent of women in the military, while accounting for 78 percent of the civilian female population.
