THE BUSINESS UNITS OF THE MINAS UNIMED FEDERATION
UNIMINAS Uniminas is the emergency medical transportation company of the Unimed System.
Founded in 1996, Uniminas has Minas Unimed Federation as its majority shareholder.
The company offers 24-hour service, 7 days a week.
In 2010, Uniminas established partnership with 58 Unimeds in Minas Gerais, ten Uni-meds out of
state, two self-management companies of health plans and two private companies, recording at
the end of December over 1.4 million customers.
UNIMED ODONTO Unimed Odonto aims to bring solutions to customers in oral health as part of our model of comprehensive health care. With it, the cooperatives that previously worked with the marketing of distinct dental products, began offering a product of a single national pro-vider, which uses the same criteria that made Unimed one of the most highly respected companies in the fi eld of Medicine.
Unimed Odonto is inserted in a market that grows 20% annually, highly concentrated in the hands of few providers. In this scenario, the company will increase its competitive-ness and add value to Unimed cooperatives.

THE ORIGINS OF MEDICALCOOPERATIVISM
“The cooperative movement is an open, non-profi t society that seeks social justice.
It arose as a dream of humanity; as a way of humanizing capitalism.”
Santos, State of São Paulo, December of 1967. Edmundo Castilho, founder of Unimed and
president of Unimed of Brasil from 1975 to 2000.
Unimed is the fi rst work cooperative in Brazil or in the Americas. It was formed 44 years ago in
the city of Santos, in Sao Paulo, by the physician Edmundo Castilho.
Today in Brazil there are 13 branches of cooperatives, including the agricultural, con-sumer, credit,
and labor, in which the Unimed System is integrated.
The idea of Unimed’s creators was to avoid the intermediation of group medicine, fi ght-ing
against commercialization and respecting the autonomy of the physicians.
CONSTITUTION OF THEUNIMED COOPERATIVE SYSTEM
Cooperativism classifi es cooperative societies by grade and by branch of activity. The
primary cooperatives are known as free-standing units, its membership consisting of in-
dividuals.
The Singular unit has administrative and fi nancial autonomy and enters into contracts. It is commonly
administered by a board of directors and an executive board, and is gov-erned by a democratic
administration.
Within the structure of the Unimed Cooperative System, the free-standing units combine to form secondary
cooperatives, the Federations. These, in turn, gather and form the Confederation, Unimed of Brazil, a tertiary
cooperative, which among other responsibili-ties has the role of representing, integrating and guiding the
the operation of medical cooperatives and companies of the Unimed System, defending, strengthening and
con-solidating the Unimed brand.
In Minas Gerais, the Federation is organized into six regional (5 intra-federative federa-tions and 1
committee). These subdivisions aim to make the decision-making process more expedient and responsive
as well as a fairer voting system.
