Todays Session
• Explore the underpinning science of the PCDEs
• Pick apart some of the PCDEs
• Deploying the PCDEs for a confidence boost
• Consider which PCDE you can develop and deploy in your studies, AND in your LIFE!
Developing and deploying PCDEs
The POP Principle
PERFORMANCEWinning now/succeeding later
OUTCOME – Methods to help you get what you want
PROCESS – Mechanisms to achieve outcomesThe processes that can make it happen – PCDEs
The “Hand of Cards” to meet all challenges
Developing and deploying PCDEs
Well… the pathway is bumpy!
We can’t rely on the end product, we need skills we can deploy along
the pathway.

Psychological Characteristics of Developing Excellence (MacNamara et al., 2010a; 2010b)
• Commitment
• Focus & Distraction Control
• Realistic Performance Evaluation
• Role Clarity
• Self Regulation
• Planning & Self-Organisation
• Goal Setting & Self reward
• Quality Practice
• Effective & Controllable Imagery
• Seeking & using Social Support

Developing and Deploying PCDEs
COMMITMENTHow well the performer can
commit to the focus and levels of effort needed for
success
FOCUS AND DISTRACTION CONTROL
Know what is important, knowing how to stay
focussed on it and knowing what to do to both avoid and counter distractions
REALISTIC PERFORMANCE EVALUATIONS
The ability to accurately know what was good and not so
good in a performance, plus the willingness to do something about it!
ROLE CLARITYThe confidence to know
what is needed/expected of you to be optimally effective
at the role or job in hand
SELF-REGULATIONIn simple terms, being able to control the effect of pressure so that you can perform well
QUALITY PRACTICEKnowing what to do and having the motivation to achieve, sufficiently high-
quality practice to drive the desired outcome
PLANNING AND SELF ORGANISATION
The ability to organise yourself to perform in any
given situation, allowing for all the factors that need to be addressed for optimum
performance.
GOAL SETTING AND SELF REWARD
Planning the steps needed to achieve a given target, organising yourself to
recognise and rewards the steps needed to achieve the
longer-term goal
EFFECTIVE AND CONTROLLABLE IMAGERY
The ability to develop effective images which can
be used to structure mental practice of a particular skill
or goal
SEEKING AND USING SOCIAL SUPPORTThe ability to build, then make use of, a network of friends, family and
stakeholders to support progress. Then knowing who to ask, when (and when not!) and being able to make use of this advice.

COMMITMENTHow well the performer can commit to the focus
and levels of effort needed for success
In one sport, it might look like this…
• Keeps going hard in practices• Will fight through minor injury
• Addresses identified weaknesses and shows
progress
In another sport, it might look like this…
• Practices away from the team• Supports others’ efforts
• Consistent effort as shown by consistent preparation

FOCUS AND DISTRACTION CONTROLKnow what is important, knowing how to stay focussed on it and knowing what to do to both
avoid and counter distractions
In one sport, it might look like this…
• Having a pre-performance routine written out to follow
for every performance• Using the pre-performance routine at a micro and macro
level
In another sport, it might look like this…
• ‘What if’ planning - planning responses for moments where
you have been distracted in the past
• Using pressure training, conditioning planned
responses to ‘live’ situations

SEEKING AND USING SOCIAL SUPPORTThe ability to build, then make use of, a network
of friends, family and stakeholders to support progress. Then knowing who to ask, when (and when not!) and being able to make use of this
advice.
In one sport, it might look like this…
• Using peer mentors to support each other through challenges• Going to coaches with
solutions
In another sport, it might look like this…
• Asking for appropriate advice and support from expert
stakeholders• For example, Nutritionists, Physiotherapists, Agents, etc.
