Hank. Mr. Lelievre loves to dan

with his wife. His favorite types

    good dance music. His favorit

quotes are Theres a place for e

    rything and everything goes in

place. and When not in use sec

basketball, and hockey . His favo

Lelievre says that the thing he li

most about living at Moncole Lak

    the good neighbors , the

    quietness , and the water.

This month I got the chance to

    interview many residents of

    Monocle Lake. One of them

was Mr. Lelievre , who is 73

years old and lives at 13759 W

Freeman Rd. In his youngeryears Mr. Lelievre used to

    work for the Coast Guard

where he did rescue work .

Later on in his life he became

    a tug-boat captain. Mr.

    Lelievre married his wife

    Audrey in 1967 and became

    step-father of his three chil-

dren; David who is 62 and

lives in Brimley, Cindy who is

57 and lives in the Sault, and

Steven who is 50 and lives in

    Oregon. Mr. and Mrs. Lelievre

started to look for a place on

the water to retire and even-

    tually they found their place

    here at Monocle Lake. I

    learned that the Lelievres

cabin is full of history. It was

    built by four German prison-

ers from WWII, and was at

    one time the sleeping quarters

    for the McNearny Lake fire-

    fighters. Mr. Lelievre said that

when the cabin got to be too

small for all the firefighters to

fit inside, they split the cabin in

half and moved it to Monocle

Lake, and then added the big

    and beautiful wood stove that

is in the cabin today. Mr.

    Lelievre retired from the Coast

Guard in 1995. He has been a

You might have noticed a Mer-ganser duck and her 5 duck-lings swimming around the

lake for the past couple weeks, but I bet you wouldnt believe

that she attacked my dad,Stephen Eles! One night my

Mom, Sister, and I were all outon our paddleboat when wesaw the Mamma Merganser

and her ducklings swimmingnear shore. The ducks started

to swim towards RogerCoullards dock and at that

same time my Dad decided togo swimming. Well, when the

Mamma Merganser saw himswimming freestyle she flewstraight at him and dove un-

derneath him trying to peck athim. We all were laughing so

hard! When she emerged againshe flew over him beating herwings rapidly. Then she re-

joined her ducklings who hadmoved quickly away. She musthave thought that my Dad was

a giant snake or otter thatwould harm her ducklings.

She sure is a brave and protec-tive mamma! The CommonMerganseris a large duck,

I found my interview with Mrs.

Swick , age 76, very pleasant be-

cause she was so open and invit-

ing. I was surprised to learn that

    Mrs. Swick married her hus-

band Dave the same month she

started high school! She went on

to have three children before she

started college. They are DaveJunior, who lives out here for

part of the summer and goes to

    Florida in the winter,

    Susan, who lives in

    Waterloo, Iowa, and

    Gary who lives in

    Kentucky. Mrs. Swick

    has 11 grandchildren

    and 5 great-

    grandchildren! After

    Mrs. Swick finished college, her

family moved from the Sault to

    Waterloo, Iowa, where Mrs.

    Swick became a school teacher.

She and Dave lived there for 33

years. Mr. and Mrs. Swick rented

the Lelievres cabin in the late 70s

and they had so much fun and

liked it so much that they bought a

small cabin here. Mr. Swick thenbuilt their garage which has small

    sleeping quarters above it and

Mr. and Mrs. Swick lived there during the time that

they were tearing down the small cabin and building

their current house at 13657 W. Freeman Rd. Mrs.

Swick says that some of her hobbies include working

on knit and crochet items. She likes little sayings like

Never say never. Her favorite author is Jan Karon

who wrote the Mitford series. Mrs. Swick says that

she also likes to garden and her favorite Monocle

Lake flowers are Lady Slippers and Trilliums. Her

favorite TV show is Madam X. Mrs. Swick would like

to say that everybody is lucky to live here at Monocle

    Lake!

    much that he eventually pur-

    chased his current cabin. Brian

shares his cabin with his two

    dogs named Jake and Marley.

    Brian enjoys spending his time

    at Monocle Lake hiking, kayak-

ing, reading and hanging out at

the beach. His favorite food is

    cheeseburgers. His favorite

    Brian Motyka,

    age 36, is a first

    grade teacher in

    Clearwater Flor-

    ida, where he

lives 9 months out of the year.

    Brian met Monocle Laker, Clare

Arbic, in college and was invited

out to the lake. He liked it so

types of music are classical and

rock and roll. Brian says that he

    likes listening to baseball games

on the radio but he also enjoys

    attending live games at baseball

    stadiums. Brians favorite movie

is Jaws. When I asked him to

    share something that most peo-

ple dont know about him he

    Never

    sayNever

Getting to Know: Brian Motykasaid that he is allergic to

You should get to know Mrs.

that Mrs. Berinier lives in today.

Mrs. Berinier has now spent 70

    summers in this same cabin!

Mrs. Bernier says that she used

to work as a travel agent. I

    guess that might explain why

she is now a snowbird and

    spends her winters in Jackson-

    ville, Oregon.

Mrs. Bernier says that her favor-

ite things to do are quilting, walking, and paddle boating.
