PBS Hawaii Hosts First HIKI N -O Conference SEASON TWO PREMIERE: THURSDAY, OCTOBER 13, 7:30 PM

COME TOGETHER

Go to any HIKI N -OŌevent and you’ll see a comfortable dynamic between teach-ers and students that may be new to you. The teachers are in charge, but they see themselves as fellow learners. They provide standards, structure, context and more. The students contribute prowess with digital equipment and communication, knowledge of their student community, perspective on youth concerns. There’s a sharing that often results in something special.

HIKI N -O, developed by PBS Hawaii in the darkest hour of the recession, is the nation’s first statewide stu-dent news network, on-air and online. Last month, we saw 220 HIKI N -O participants from almost every island, including Molokai and Niihau, in the same room at the same time. When I stood onstage to welcome them to our

inaugural HIKI N -O Statewide Conference in Honolulu, what a view! Hiki n -o means “can do,” and that’s what I saw on the multi-generational sea of faces.

The students and teachers were ready to learn and exchange storytelling tips, and to see what’s next for HIKI N -O in the upcoming second season. Private founda-tions including The Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation and individual donors support-ed PBS Hawaii by paying most of the tab for the conference, with Hawaiian Airlines donating inter-island air travel.

Participating in the HIKI N -O network doesn’t cost the hard-pressed schools any money, either. As public, private and charter schools seek transformative change to meet learning and workforce needs in the Age of Information, they embrace HIKI N -O for its ability to meet General Learner Outcome requirements.

And we’re seeing amazing work by teachers who’ve left familiar teaching disci-plines to bravely respond to the growing need for multi-media education. They’re learning alongside their students. Several teachers said that their careers were running out of gas until they found HIKI N -O – and now they’re pumped up and

fired up! Not that the work is easy. To get the go-ahead from our PBS Hawaii HIKI N -O team to air a story has required school teams to keep trying, keep upgrading the quality of their work. The average story goes through five drafts before it is broadcast.

Our conference main speaker was a visual storyteller extraordinaire, CBS News veteran cameraman/producer Les Rose. He’s best known for those excellent stories with reporter Steve Hartman which involve throwing a dart at a map of the U.S. to identify a town or city, plucking a name at random out of the phone book of that town, then doing a story on that person’s life. The premise is “everyone has a story.” Les kept his audience of students and teachers rapt for two hours with video clips and real-world tips.

Conference break-out sessions covered subjects in depth, including interviewing, writing and camera techniques. At a work-shop led by independent producer/show host Emme Tomimbang offering guidance for on-air presentation, it was remarkable to hear an 11-year-old boy critique a high-school student, citing strong points and also areas on which to work. A 12-year-old from Niihau spoke up and praised a teacher’s on-camera effort.

HIKI N -OŌis growing fast. Season Two has 63 participating schools, including an elemen-tary school, up from 54 schools in Season One earlier this year.

A final word about our lean staff at PBS Hawaii. They did the heavy lifting, much of it on their own time, to organize this statewide conference – TV producers, studio crew members, engineers, admin staffers, fundraisers, programmers, all disciplines. They took care of shuttle buses, goodie bags, trophies, catering arrangements, load-ing and unloading, everything. Their aloha for the students and the teachers of HIKI N -OŌis evident to all. I’m so proud to work with this terrific team.

ea‘au High School junior Bodhi Shartner was absorbing storytelling tips at PBS Hawaii’s first-ever HIKI N -OŌConference. Then it

hit him. So many “big things” happen on Oahu that: “People don’t pay much attention to the Big Island,” he observed. “A lot of stories don’t get out,” he continued. This realization made such an impact on Shartner that the HIKI N -O reporter wants to change the focus of a news story he’s working on about a dance studio back home. “I want to do it more [about the] backup dancers, the people, than the studio,” he said.

Students and educators from most of the participating schools attended the HIKI N -O Conference held last month at the East-West Center on the University of Hawaii Manoa campus. Participants immersed themselves in breakout sessions covering all aspects of producing a video news story: interviewing, writing, on-camera delivery, video editing, lighting, composition and story revision.

Aligning with PBS Hawaii’s mission to promote high-quality work, renowned broadcast professionals led the conference sessions. Award-winning CBS cameraman Les Rose led a general morning session, as well as an afternoon session on conducting interviews.

Statewide Student News Network at 7:30 p.m., followed at 8:00 p.m. by the state’s only live, televised public affairs show – Insights on PBS Hawaii, hosted by Dan Boylan. Insights will be followed by PBS Hawaii Presents at 9:00 p.m., which showcases locally produced documentaries and performance programs that reflect the many cultures of Hawaii. This is PBS Hawaii’s longest block of local primetime programming in recent history. With two-and-a-half hours of local news, issues and storytelling, Thursday nights on PBS Hawaii will provide an unprecedented view of Hawaii.

Ho‘okele is the Hawaiian word for the steersman of a canoe – someone who sits in the back, directing and pacing the paddling team, while the crew is up front, making headway and covering the distance.

Ho‘okele is also the name of an award recently presented to our PBS Hawaii President and CEO Leslie Wilcox. The award recognizes exceptional nonprofit leadership and encourages outstanding non-profit directors to remain in the field, as the burn-out level is high. The recognition comes with a $10,000 grant for the leader’s professional development or personal renewal.

The award is from the Hawaii Community Foundation and the Wallace Alexander Gerbode Foundation. Other 2011 winners are Tony Krieg, Hale Makua Health Services on Maui; Lea Hong, Hawaii program director of The Trust for Public Land; and the head of Hanahau‘oli School, Dr. Robert Peters. Hawaiian Airlines provided free inter-island travel for students and teachers from the Neighbor Islands to attend last month’s HIKI N -OŌtraining conference at the Hawaii Imin International Conference Center in Jefferson Hall at the East-West Center, Honolulu. The conference offered journalism and video workshops to 220 participants for their roles as advisors, reporters, videographers, on-camera talent and editors.

Westbound travelers on Hawaiian Airlines will get to see a special feature about HIKI N -OŌon the airline’s in-flight video program, Hawaiian Skies, through the months of October and November.

Since Steve and Laura Kanemoto’s 1-year-old son watches Curious George on PBS Hawaii all the time, the Kanemotos decided it was time to pledge their sup-port. As new members, they received a PBS Hawaii Aloha Diners Club Card and put it to good use.

Growing Hope Against Hunger: A SESAME STREET Primetime SpecialTuesday, October 18 | 8 PM

This family special will shine a light on the problem of childhood hunger. During a food drive on SESAME STREET, Elmo meets guest stars Brad Paisley and Kimberly Williams-Paisley, and learns how the struggle with hunger affects a new friend, Lily. The seeds of hope are planted when they visit a community garden and learn with Rosita how people can work together to take steps towards solutions. Even Super Grover realizes that, while this problem is too big for one superhero to fix, many people working together can achieve super things. The theme is continued with filmed documentaries of four real families whohave experienced the challenge of hunger and are finding strategies and resources that help.

Brad Paisley, Kimberly Williams Paisley and Elmo raise awareness about the widespread issue of hunger in the United States as part of the SESAME STREET primetime television special.

NOVA Finding Life Beyond EarthWEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 19 | 9 PMScientists are on the verge of answering one of the greatest questions in history: Are we alone? Combining the latest telescope images with dazzling CGI, “Finding Life Beyond Earth” immerses audiences in the sights and sounds of alien worlds, while top astrobiologists explain how these places are changing how we think about the potential for life in our solar system. We used to think our neighboring planets and moons were fairly boring — mostly cold, dead rocks where life could never take hold. Today, however, the solar system looks wilder than we ever imag-ined. Powerful telescopes and unmanned space missions have revealed a wide range of dynamic environments — atmospheres thick with organic molecules, active volcanoes and vast saltwater oceans. This ongoing revolution is forcing scientists to expand their ideas about what kinds of worlds could support life. If we do find primitive life forms elsewhere in the solar system, it may well be that life is common in the universe — the rule, and not the exception.
