For over 100 years, Loma Linda University Health has transformed lives with a clear vision of a healthier world. From the beginning, our vision has been to offer hope and healing, to restore people to wholeness in mind, body, and spirit. The communities we serve locally and globally need our more

complete approach to wholeness — and we are responding with an unprecedented plan for the future.

Vision 2020 is a monumental step toward a comprehensive strategy for the health and wholeness of our

community and world. It is not a new course, but an intensified focus on our mission. This is a vision that can only

emerge from the unique environment of Loma Linda University Health.

Only here do our 6 hospitals and 8 professional health science schools teach, learn, collaborate and innovate.

The Mission Globe stands in the center of Loma Linda University’s

campus symbolizing a commitment to service throughout the world. At Loma Linda University Health, this is the picture we see in our minds and hearts every day.

Imagine a tomorrow where:

“We stand on the shoulders of faith and science. We believe they are compatible and we are committed to both facets of our work.” —Richard H. Hart, MD, DrPH, President, Loma Linda University Health

Now is the time to be bold and look toward what can be. It’s time for Vision 2020.

This idea of wholeness was our founding message — our strategy — when Loma Linda was created. In light of current social trends and health care reform, now is the time to initiate new strategies to address the health and wellness needs of those around us through wholeness research, practice and education.

Loma Linda University Health stands out in our wealth of knowledge, research and practice in disease prevention, wellness and comprehensive wholeness. The new Wholeness Institute will foster a broader and greater level of collaboration to create new strategies for individual and community wellness, engaging university students and health professionals, as well as leaders from the civic, non-profit, religious and business sectors.

Loma Linda University was founded on a radical-for-its-time model to educate practitioners in prevention and wellness, while incorporating the latest scientific knowledge. Vision 2020 will strengthen our exceptional health science university and integrate wholeness into every aspect of student life. We will also increase opportunities for profoundly meaningful service learning experiences.

Vision 2020 will increase funding for education through scholarship endowments, faculty development and new educational approaches, allowing us to continue to attract the highest level of faculty and students. Increasing scholarship funding will also encourage our students to choose service opportunities when they complete their education, it will make it possible.

Education

“One of the most influential parts of my experience here was going on two mission service trips, thanks to scholarship funds. I used what I was learning to offer people where we served something beneficial they didn’t have access to. It quickly broke down barriers. This changed my perspective, not just of myself and my life, but of what I learned and implemented in patient care.” — Sara Martinez, School of Nursing, 2014

“At Loma Linda University we have this marvelous opportunity. We have our eight schools all together on one campus. We have this exceptional teaching field for our students to be a part of the hospital. More and more through inter-professional education, we’re bringing together the various sciences and team approach to the research we do.” — Ron Carter, PhD, Provost, Loma Linda University

Clinical CareThe change in California state seismic requirements for hospitals has given us the chance to turn a challenge into an opportunity. Our daring $1.4 billion transformational vision capitalizes on Loma Linda University Health’s core strengths, including building a new adult hospital and expanding the children’s hospital.

The new iconic hospital towers will be state-of-the-art, allowing for the newest advances in technology and patient care. New private patient rooms have more space for family members and staff to continue providing the best care. The expanded children’s hospital tower will offer a healing environment designed especially for children. The need in our region is great and together we can continue to provide our exceptional whole-person care as we plan for the patients of tomorrow.

“We want to build facilities that can accommodate the technology, the operating rooms, and the patient care rooms that will make a difference in the lives of the people we serve locally, while our research and education touch the lives of people around the world. This is our chance to make a difference.”

— Kerry Heinrich, JD, Chief Executive Officer,

Loma Linda University Medical Center

At Loma Linda University Health, we live to discover innovative new questions and impactful answers. We have gained global recognition by asking questions that were daring, difficult and ahead of their time. From the first successful infant heart transplant to the first hospital based proton treatment center, we have opened new avenues for health and healing.

Today we continue to ask daring questions and seek new discoveries. Vision 2020 will allow us to take even bolder action, greatly expanding and enhancing our already robust research enterprise through a new collaborative research center and program endowments.

Loma Linda University Health-San Bernardino will expand its reach into the heart of a city, with some of the most challenging health indicators in the nation, and provide educational opportunities for local youth. In addition, a new clinical initiative will engage residents in meeting their health care needs near where they live and work.

Imagine“Paisley got a second chance at life. So, quite frankly, it feels like a second chance for Rick and me, too. We just couldn’t even imagine a life without her.”

— Charity, mother of Paisley

Paisley’s Heart

The shocking news came on Valentine’s Day. Four-month-old Paisley’s heart was failing. Her frightened parents rushed her to Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital where physicians explained she was missing a left coronary artery and had an enlarged heart. Until that day, Paisley’s parents, Rick and Charity, thought their baby was healthy. Now she was dying and needed a heart transplant.

Because her severely damaged heart and lungs could no longer function, Paisley was treated with an extra corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) machine — the only one in our region. Three days later she received a temporary external artificial heart to maintain her kidneys, brain and liver function while she waited for a heart transplant.

A tiny dot in a sea of tubes and machines, Paisley was surrounded by the expert care of physicians and nurses and enveloped in her parents’ love. A month later, baby Paisley had a new heart. Nine days after receiving her new heart, she went home. Today, Paisley is an active, happy toddler.

Vision 2020 is a truly monumental, historic movement. It’s a sweeping vision— one far bigger than Loma Linda University Health alone. It will take enormous commitment, effort and resources from everyone involved to reach our goals.

This is not just a Loma Linda University Health project. This campaign belongs to all of us who care about health, wholeness and the future of our community. All five of our children have been born here and we are the proud parents of a Loma Linda University alumna. In addition, we have built our business in this community, and have greatly appreciated that this world-class educational and health care institution was available to both our family and employees. It is our privilege and responsibility to rise to this challenge; to ensure the continued world class education and care that Loma Linda University Health provides for generations to come.

Amazing, caring and daring leaders and organizations have already committed their support. Your participation will build on their generous gifts to make sure this epicenter of health and wholeness increases its impact in our region and globally.
