“Everywhere, on every continent, to

whatever people one belongs, everyhuman being is a child of that sameFather who is in heaven, and is a brotheror sister of everyone else. Christiansshould treat all people lovingly asmembers of God’s one family.” — Pope Benedict XVI

“It is not that the Gospel has changed; it is that we have begun to understand it better.” — St. John XXIII

Who Can Be Saved? This question is addressed in the Second Vatican Council’s

Dogmatic Constitution On The Church

“The Church knows

that she is joined in manyways to the baptized whoare honored by the nameof Christian, but who donot however profess theCatholic faith in itsentirety or have notpreserved unity orcommunion under the

successor of Peter. For there are many who hold sacredscripture in honor as a rule of faith and of life who havea sincere religious zeal, who lovingly believe in God theFather Almighty and in Christ, the Son of God and theSavior, who are sealed by baptism which unites them toChrist, and who indeed recognize and receive othersacraments in their own Churches or ecclesiasticalcommunities. Many of them possess the episcopate, celebrate the holy Eucharist and cultivate devotion ofthe Virgin Mother of God. There is furthermore asharing in prayers and spiritual benefits; these Christiansare indeed in some real way joined to us in the HolySpirit for, by his gifts and graces, his sanctifying poweris also active in them and he has strengthened some ofthem even to the shedding of their blood. And so theSpirit stirs up desires and actions in all of Christ’sdisciples in order that all may be peaceably united, asChrist ordained, in one flock under one shepherd. Mother Church never ceases to pray, hope and work thatthis may be achieved, and she exhorts her children topurification and renewal so that the sign of Christ mayshine more brightly over the face of the church.

[Those of the faith of Judaism] “Finally, those who have not yet received the Gospelare related to the People of God in various ways. Thereis, first, that People to which the covenants and promiseswere made, and from which Christ was born accordingto the flesh (cf. Rom. 9:4-5): in view of the divine choice, they are a people most dear for the sake of the fathers, for the gifts of God are without repentance (Rom. 11:29).

[Other Non-Christians] “But the plan of salvation also includes those whoacknowledge the Creator, in the first place amongstwhom are the Moslems: these profess to hold the faithof Abraham, and together with us they adore the one,

merciful God, mankind’s judge on the last day. “Nor is God remote from those who in shadows andimages seek the unknown God, since he gives to all menlife and breath and all things (Acts 17:25-28), and sincethe Savior wills all men to be saved (Tim 2:4). “Those who, through no fault of their own, do notknow the Gospel of Christ or his Church, but whonevertheless seek God with a sincere heart, and, movedby grace, try in their actions to do his will as they knowit through the dictates of their conscience – those toomay achieve eternal salvation.

[Atheists & Agnostics/Non-Religious] “Nor shall divine providence deny the assistancenecessary for salvation to those who, without any faultof theirs, have not yet arrived at an explicit knowledgeof God, and who, not without grace, strive to lead agood life. Whatever good or truth is found among themis considered by the Church to be a preparation for theGospel and given by him who enlightens all men thatthey may at length have life.” _______________________________________________

The universality of salvation

means that it is granted notonly to those who explicitlybelieve in Christ and haveentered the church. Sincesalvation is offered to all, itmust be made concretelyavailable to all. But it is clearthat today, as in the past, manypeople do not have anopportunity to come to knowor accept the Gospel revelationor enter the Church. The social and cultural conditionsin which they live do not permit this, and frequently theyhave been brought up in other religious traditions. Forsuch people salvation in Christ is accessible by virtue ofa grace, which, while having a mysterious relationshipto the Church, does not make them formally part of theChurch but enlightens them in a way which isaccommodated to their spiritual and material situation. This grace comes from Christ; it is the result of hisSacrifice and is communicated by the Holy Spirit. Itenables each person to attain salvation through his or herfree cooperation. — St. John Paul II

Pope Francis:

All havebeenredeemed!

John said to Jesus:“Teacher, we saw aman using yourname to expe ldemons and we triedto stop him becausehe is not of ourcompany.” Jesus

said in reply, “Do not try to stop him. No one canperform a miracle in my name and at the sametime speak ill of me. Anyone who is not against usis with us.” Mark 9:38-40.

In preaching on this Gospel passage, Pope Francissaid:

“In this Gospel, the disciples complain, becausethey say: ‘If he is not one of us, he cannot do good. If he is not of our party, he cannot do good.’ And Jesus corrects them: “Do not hinder him, lethim do good.”The disciples were a little intolerant, closed off bythe idea of possessing the truth, convinced thatthose who do not have the truth, cannot do good. This was wrong – Jesus broadens the horizon.

The Lord created us in his image and likeness, andall of us have this commandment at heart: do goodand do not do evil. All of us. ‘But, Father, he is notCatholic! He cannot do good!’ Yes, he can. Notcan: must! Because he has this commandmentwithin him.

This ‘closing off’ imagines that those outside cannotdo good; it’s a wall that leads to war and to whatsome people throughout history have conceived of:killing in the name of God. To say that we can killin the name of God is simply blasphemy.

The Lord has redeemed all of us, all of us, withthe Blood of Christ: all of us, not just Catholics. Everyone! ‘Father, even the atheists?’ Even theatheists. Everyone! And this blood makes uschildren of God of the first class! We are createdchildren in the likeness of God, and the Blood ofChrist has redeemed us all! And we all have a dutyto do good. And this commandment for everyone todo good is a beautiful path towards peace. If we,each doing our own part, if we do good to others, ifwe meet there, doing good, and we go slowly, gently, little by little, we will make that culture ofencounter. We need that so much. We must meetone another doing good. ‘But I don’t believe,Father, I am an atheist!’ But do good. We willmeet one another there.

Doing good is a principal that unites all humanity, beyond the diversity of ideologies and religions.”

Pope Benedict XVI:

If it’s good, it’sfrom God!Pope Benedict preached on thesame passage. He said thatCatholics should be delightedwhenever non-Catholics dowhat is good or embrace whatis true.P o p e B e n e d i c t s a i d : “Members of the Church should not feel jealousy, butshould rejoice if someone from outside the communitydoes good ....”The pope quoted St. Augustine, 4th-5th century saint:“Just as one can find that which is not Catholic in theCatholic Church, one can also find something that maybe Catholic outside of the Catholic Church.”This, the Pope said, is what Jesus wishes to explain tohis disciples, that “good and even miraculous things”can happen outside their circle when others “cooperatewith the Kingdom of God” even in small gestures suchas “offering a simple glass of water to someone.”The tendency toward jealousy can exist within theChurch, said the pope, when Catholics resent holinessand goodness being attained by non-Catholics.“Instead we should all be able to always appreciate andrespect each other, praising the Lord” when “he acts inthe Church and in the world,” the pope said.

BlessedMother Teresa:

“We allbelong to thesame family.”

“The same loving hand

that has created you hascreated me. If he is yourFather, he must be my

Father also. We all belong to the same family. Hindus,Muslims and all people are our brothers and sisters. Theytoo are the children of God.

“Our work among the Hindus proclaims that God loves them. God has created them – they are my brothers and sisters.Naturally, I would like to give them the joy of what I believe, but that I cannot do; only God can. Faith is a gift of God, butGod does not force himself.

“Christians, Muslims, Hindus, believers and nonbelievers, have the same opportunity with us to do works of love, havethe same opportunity to share the joy of loving and come torealize God’s presence. Hindus become better Hindus. Catholics become better Catholics. Muslims become betterMuslims.”

Pope Francis:

“Buildbridges,not walls!”

“Christians need to

build bridges inorder to announcethe Gospel, notcondemn.”

“Like Jesus, who dined with Pharisees and sinners, andSt. Paul, who preached with idol worshipers, trueevangelizers build bridges that lead unbelievers into theChurch, not walls to protect it.

“In preaching to pagan Athenians at the Areopagus, Paulis a pontifex, a builder of bridges. He acted as a “pope.”

“He sought dialogue in order to get closer to the heart ofwhoever was listening to him. He doesn’t want tobecome a builder of walls. He doesn’t say: “Idolaters,go to hell!” No, this, rather, is the attitude of Paul inAthens: Build a bridge to their heart in order to takeanother step and announce Jesus Christ. This is the kindof attitude Christians always ought to have.

“A Christian must proclaim Jesus Christ in such a waythat he be accepted: received, not refused – and Paulknows that he has to sow the Gospel message. Heknows that the proclamation of Jesus Christ is not easy, but that it does not depend on him. He must doeverything possible, but the proclamation of JesusChrist, the proclamation of the truth, depends on theHoly Spirit.

“Christians who are afraid to build bridges and prefer tobuild walls are Christians who are not sure of their faith, not sure of Jesus Christ. When the Church loses thisapostolic courage, it becomes a stalled Church, a tidyChurch, nice, very nice, but without fertility because ithas lost the courage to go to the peripheries, where thereare so many victims of idolatry, of worldliness, of weakthinking.

“In these terms, now is a good time in the life of theChurch — the last 50 or 60 years have been a good time. Because I remember when I was a child, one would hearin Catholic families, in my family: “No, we cannot go totheir house because they are not married in the Church. It was like an exclusion. Neither could we go to thehouses of socialists or atheists.

“Now, thank God, people do not say such things, right? Such an attitude was a defense of the faith, but it wasone with walls. The Lord made bridges. Paul, thereforefollows the attitude of Jesus. He was aware that he mustevangelize, not proselytize. The Church does not growby means of proselytizing, but by attraction, bywitnessing, by preaching.

“Let us today ask St. Paul to give us this apostoliccourage, this spiritual fervor, so that we might beconfident. “But Father, we might make mistakes....” Well, go on with it: if you make a mistake, you get upand go forward: that is the way. Those who do not walkin order not to err, make the more serious mistake.”

“Be compassionate, as your heavenly Father is compassionate.Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned.” Luke 6:36-37

Eternal damnation may remain a possibility, but we are not

granted the knowledge of which human beings, or if anyhuman beings at all, are involved in eternal damnation. CanGod, who loves man so much, permit the man who rejectshim to be condemned to eternal torment? Even when Jesussays of Judas, the traitor, “It would be better for that man ifhe had never been born” (Mt. 26:24), his words do notallude for certain to eternal damnation. There is no one whocannot discover and find a place in God’s love. There existsno one so bad, so brought down, so broken down, that hecannot find a place in that love. St. John Paul II

Clare Boothe Luce hesitated at becoming a Catholic

because she doubted the compatibility of eternal punishmentwith God’s infinite, merciful love. But Bishop Fulton Sheenpersuaded her that there very well might be no one in hell, and he received her into the Church. Fr. K. Ryan, Catholic Digest

God’s love for Israel is compared to a father’s love for his

son. His love for his people is stronger than a mother’s forher children. God loves his people more than a bridegroomhis beloved; his love will be victorious over even the worstinfidelities, and will extend to his most precious gift: “Godso loved the world that he gave his only Son. Catechism of the Catholic Church (219)

The Church prays that no one shall be lost: “Lord, let menever be parted from you.” If it is true that no one cansave himself, it is also true that God “desires all men to besaved” (1Tim 2:4), and that for him “all things arepossible” (Mt 19:26). Catechism of the Catholic Church (1058)

God loves us in a way that we might call “obstinate” and

enfolds us in his inexhaustible tenderness. The anger andmercy of the Lord alternate in a dramatic sequence, but lovetriumphs in the end, for God is love. Pope Benedict XVI

Christ obtained, once and for all, the salvation of man – of

each and of all men, of those whom no one shall snatch fromthe Father’s hand.... (John 10:29). Who can change the factthat we are redeemed – a fact that is as powerful andfundamental as creation itself. We became again theproperty of the Father thanks to that love which does notrecoil from the shame of the cross to be able to guaranteesalvation to all men. The Church announces today the certitude of the resurrection, the certitude of salvation. St. John Paul II

The phrase “fear of the Lord” should be understood in

terms of awe, rather than dread. In contemplation of theAlmighty, the Christian does not experience servile fear, buta sincere and serious respect that prompts genuine andactive adherence. Pope Benedict XVI

Jesus was more severe toward those who condemned the

sinners than toward the sinners themselves. From theevidence in the Bible, being merciful appears to be anessential aspect of being in the image and likeness of God.Mercy is the form God’s love takes in relation to sinners. After we have experienced it, we must demonstrate it to ourbrothers and sisters, both on the level of the churchcommunity as well as on a personal level. Fr. Raniero Cantalamessa, Papal Preacher

By forgiving his executioners, Jesus showed he is not the

accuser of the guilty but rather their advocate andintercessor. Jesus’ words of forgiveness – “Father, forgivethem for they know not what they do” – were spoken incircumstances of the greatest hatred and cruelty. Jesusforgives His adversaries immediately, even as their hostilitycontinues. Jesus is the defender, not the accuser of theguilty, because He knows that many can be less guilty thanit appears, or one thinks. For this reason, he taught hisfollowers not to judge others. The mercy Jesus asked forHis executioners is extended to all humanity. St. John Paul II

God is loving toward human beings, quick to pardon but

slow to punish. Therefore, no persons should ever despairof their own salvation. St. Cyril of Jerusalem

St. Paul explains that Christ came to forgive sin and that his

love is greater than any sin, stronger than all my personalsins or those of anyone else. This is the faith of the Church. This is the Good News of God’s love that the Churchproclaims and that I proclaim to you today: God loves youwith an everlasting love. St. John Paul II

I am certain that neither death nor life, neither angels nor

principalities, neither the present nor the future, nor powers, neither height nor depth nor any other creature, will be ableto separate us from the love of God that comes to us inChrist Jesus, our Lord. Romans 8:38-39

God’s justice is HIS MERCY — St. Theresa of Lisieux
