Reuben’s RuleWhen a ball is hit into the

stands at a big-league baseballgame, it can be kept as asouvenir. This wasn’t always thecase. In 1921, Reuben Berman, astockbroker attending a NewYork Giants game, was ejectedfrom the stadium after he caughta foul ball and tossed it into thecrowd instead of handing it overto security guards to be put backinto play, as was customary backthen. Berman sued the Giantsover the incident and won, resulting in Reuben’s Rule, which made it official that fanscould keep MLB foul balls.

Memorable Melody:‘You’re a Grand Old Flag’

A conversation with a CivilWar veteran inspired the lyrics ofthis patriotic march, written byBroadway star George M. Cohanfor his 1906 stage musical“George Washington Jr.” Therousing tribute to the Americanflag declares, “Ev’ry heart beatstrue under red, white and blue,”and uses familiar lines fromother famous songs, including“Yankee Doodle Boy” and “AuldLang Syne.” During World WarI, the tune’s popularity soared, and it became the first songfrom a musical to sell more than1 million copies of sheet music.

CornerDirector’s

To the Residents of ColonialHeights and Gardens,

So many of you asked abouthow my (first time) cruise went.It was great! I would definitelylike to go again next year.

We have a lot of projectsscheduled for this summer andfall. Unfortunately, the majorproblem is getting a contractorto do them... There is so muchavailable work out there that it isalmost impossible to getcontractors to take on new jobs.Hopefully, some of the contacts

that we have established overthe years will come throughfor us.

At the time that I write this(May 13th) the Reds are playingbetter?? I am hoping for at leasta winning season.

Sincerely, Ken

Simple Steps Resultin Longer Blossoms

Whether you are the luckyrecipient of flowers or buy somefor yourself, you’ll get longer lifefrom the blooms with these tips.1) Keep the vase filled withwater and professional flowerfood. (Commercial solutionsmake blossoms last longer.)Follow mixing directions forbest results; diluting the solutionmakes it ineffective. Every fewdays, replace the solution with afresh mix. 2) Every few days, recut 1 to 2 inches from stemswith a sharp knife. 3) Keepflowers in a cool spot, awayfrom direct sunlight, heatingvents or televisions. (Appliancesradiate heat, which dehydratesflowers and causes themto wither.)

Remember Me?Before there was Barbie or

Mickey Mouse, Kewpies were allthe rage, and Rose O’Neill wasthe artist who created them.

• She was born June 25,1874, in Pennsylvania andgrew up in Nebraska.

• A self-taught artist,O’Neill’s talent emergedat an early age. At 14,she won a drawing contestsponsored by anOmaha newspaper.

• At 19, she moved toNew York City and quicklygot work as a professionalillustrator. Her art wasused in many nationalmagazines as well asnewspapers and books.

• In 1909, Ladies HomeJournal featured O’Neill’sdrawings of Kewpies. Thesmiling, Cupid-likecharacters with wide eyeswere a hit. The Kewpies’popular adventuresextended to comic strips, books and paper dolls.

• A few years later, due tofans’ demand, she oversawthe production of the firstKewpie dolls and figurines, which were sold worldwideand are still collectibles.

• By 1914, O’Neill was thehighest-paid femaleillustrator in America.

• Her illustrations were alsoseen in many productadvertisements, includingJell-O and Kellogg’sCorn Flakes.
