There is a buzz at The Global Party HQ in London as they prepare for the month of June when some of the world’s leading restaurants will be supporting The Global Charity Trust for the entire month as well as raising funds and awareness for a charity local to them.

Now in its fifth year, The Global Party spans the globe in partnership with the “best of the best” restaurants, hotels and clubs.

Every Global Party has a fantastic launch event. I caught up with Global Party CEO David Johnstone who explained what makes each Global Party so special. “The first pre-launch event we did was at the Natural History Museum in London. It was a great success - we had a hot air balloon outside and over 2,000 people inside. Everyone loved the idea of coming together and having fun while looking out for those less fortunate”.

The first pre-launch event we did was at the Natural History Museum in London. It was a great success - we had a hot air balloon

outside and over 2,000 people insideThe Global Party was born and the word

quickly spread. The launch was attended by over 32,000 VIP’s across 73 cities. “The great thing about The Global Party” remarks Johnstone, “is that every venue in every city does something different. For many venues they find that what works best is to carry on as usual with their participation in The Global Party reinforcing their position to their existing customer base. Some venues hold an extra special event at some point within the month to showcase their venue and to promote themselves to new customers on a global scale”.Bryan Ferry

It is the wide mix of events that makes The Global Party so unique. There have been performances from international artists like Bryan Ferry, The Gypsy Kings and Macy Gray, fine dining experiences at restaurants and hotels all over the world including the grand opening of the Shelborne in Miami, nightlife events at venues like The Cavalli Club in Dubai, Buddha Bar in London and Boujis in Hong Kong, cocktail parties in incredible locations including Bhutan, The Galapagos and Easter Island and even a VIP Global Party event on the Orient Express.

“This is only the beginning” explains Johnstone. “We are now planning to launch the next Global Party with a simultaneous launch

events in up to 360 cities. May 30th 2015 will see one leading club venue in each city holding a special evening in celebration of The Global Party and of their city. The elite of the city will know that a particular venue is hosting the launch of The Global Party and that we will be linking all the venues together through a range of methods including Global Party TV and social media”.

It seems like an enormous undertaking, but David Johnstone takes it all in his stride. “We’ve just announced our launch and already have confirmed the ‘best of the best’ in a large number of cities including Dublin, Zagreb, Newcastle, Palermo and Buenos Aires. We act as quality control to make sure that we have the right venues who will sit comfortably alongside our restaurant and hotel partners. Our partners really benefit from the launch as it drives people in their city to their establishments and allows them to share in the PR benefits.”

“The launch is the start of a whole month of activity where the world’s finest restaurants and their customers support local good causes and The Global Charity Trust, giving a little something back as responsible global citizens. To date we have given over £2000,000 NET directly to charitable causes as well as introducing thousands of patrons and potential donors to hundreds of good causes.”

Clearly there is a winning formula. The social elite/high-net-worth/international party crowd with disposable incomes will continue to go out, eat, drink and spend. The world’s neediest people and deserving causes will continue to need the support from those people. What David Johnstone and The Global Party do so well is link the two together. He has created an entertainment platform with a social conscience which benefits all the venues involves, the attendees and all the supported charitable causes and whose impact will be felt all across the world.

Now that’s a launch!

The Global Partyreaches Beirut

The Phoenicia Hotel Beirut was proud to host The Global Party this September 2014

Beirut has always been heralded as the historical birth of one of the greatest trading nations and gateways in the world, bridging countries, continents and civilizations. Phoenicia’s heritage as the heartbeat of Beirut, brings a unique and new experience to guests and visitors travelling there. Phoenicia InterContinental was proud to support The Global Party and bring an inspiring message to Beirut as the exclusive Lebanon location that help create the legacy “Linking The World for a Worthy Cause”.

The Phoenicia Hotel is prominent as a spearhead of Lebanon’s renaissance and new development as an ideal place to visit. In the historic and multicultural city centre of Beirut, with the redeveloped marina on its doorstep right by the famous Corniche waterfront, the hotel plays perfect host to international leisure and business playground and boardroom in one. Only few minutes from the city’s business and banking district, the major shopping areas and

An audience of VIP’s in Beirut became part of the world’s largest private charity event as The Global Party came to the Phoenicia Hotel. Lucy Self looks at what makes Beirut such a vibrant city where the modern and classical worlds come together linking the world for a worthy cause.

the vibrant downtown. The hotel is a complex comprising of two towers and one residential building holding 446 rooms and suites, excelling in design and serving as a benchmark for ultimate comfort and luxury. With a 80,000 square meters commercial center built around the three-tower hotel as well as two floors of public space counting a spacious banquet area, a shopping arcade, five restaurants, eleven conference and exhibition areas, two swimming pools and a lavish SPA.

Approached by The Global Party to participate in this international event, after having seen the significant global impact The Global Party has had with local and International charities over the last events, The Phoenicia InterContinental was delighted to support this unique charity endeavour and have the opportunity to engage and participate in such a noble cause. They have a long established culture of supporting and taking an active part in responsible

business programmes, and have a core value to support their local community and the global InterContinental Hotels Groups (IHG) initiatives.

The “SUNSET RENDEZVOUS” event took place on Sept 3, 2014 at the beautiful Améthyste outdoor pool Lounge, “Where Passion meets Fashion for a Noble Cause”, a mission where all funds will go to support the Children Cancer Center of Lebanon. Guests enjoyed special live shows by 8eme Art, an exclusive performance by DJ Mitri along with delectable live cooking stations. Fashion international Lebanese designer Georges Hobeika revealed his walk-in closet as well as a fur fashion show by G.Nasrallah. The event raised the needed awareness and contributed to support children and their families who everyday face this severe illness. The unique event designed specifically for The Global Party was a great success.

The Phoenicia InterContinental holds a place in the hearts of the local community and guests where excellence and passion combine to deliver special glamourous moments and every team member in Phoenicia InterContinental worked together to ensure that this event was a key highlight in the social agenda that had a lasting positive memory and was of course a call to action to do as much as possible to support those that need it most. The designer Georges Hobeika showed his full support by providing a beautiful walk-in closet featuring almost 200 dresses and G.Nasrallah provided the exclusive fur fashion event.

A stunning event.

The Global Party event in Beirut raised a valuable amount to support children; a wonderful total of USD $86,783 (GBP £53,536). From the dresses and clothing that were sold to the tombola participation fees, the raised amount went fully to the Children Cancer Center of Lebanon.

Alon Shulman, creative director of sponsorship and marketing agency Worldwide-Exposure, explores the award winning Gabriel Hotel with owner Nuaman Soufraki.

I caught up with hotelier (and design guru) Nuaman Soufraki in his immaculately manicured private garden for what was supposed to be a simple chat about his boutique hotel in Cairo which was hosting The Global Party to a stylish VIP crowd. The simple chat about the event quickly turned into a magical journey as Nuaman outlined his vision to create a first class unique hotel where every element of the design was carefully thought out to enhance the experience.

Luxury in the land of the Pharaohs

“The Gabriel in Cairo has excelled at this year’s World Luxury Hotel

Awards, not only winning Egypt’s Luxury Boutique

Hotel but the entire continent of Africa’s Luxury Design Hotel”

Giving his guests unrivalled quality is only part of the story. Nuaman and his family support the wider community who benefit from his ideas and initiatives. He jumped at the chance to host The Global Party to raise awareness amongst his guests for the Children’s Cancer Hospital in Cairo which provides a free service for all Egyptians. This was the perfect way to introduce potential patrons to such a worthy organisation. Nuaman explained “We are delighted to be a part of The Global Party and we hope to be partners for many years ahead”.

Luxury in the land of the Pharaohs

The Gabriel Hotel is a magnificent boutique hotel in the true sense of the word, filled with opulence and great design. As Nuaman says, “it’s full of character and it feels like a home away from home”. And his vision has paid off - We are delighted that one of our Official venue Host Partners, The Gabriel in Cairo has excelled at this year’s World Luxury Hotel Awards, not only winning Egypt’s Luxury Boutique Hotel but the entire continent of Africa’s Luxury Design Hotel.Egypt has been a melting pot of cultures for thousands of years with influences from the Pharaohs, Babylonians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs and Ottomans. With monuments from all these cultures throughout the area it seems the perfect place for The Gabriel. Nuaman’s old world charm and charisma along with his attention to detail have created the perfect 21st Century hideaway in a city steeped with history.

What started as a philanthropists dream of uniting high net worth individuals with a series of

simultaneous parties in 2011 has grown to hundreds of the world’s most luxurious restaurants, private

members’ clubs, premium bars and 5 star hotels staging a Global Party and raising much needed funds

and awareness for hundreds of good causes three times a year with venues picking dates throughout

the entire months of March, June and September.

Simply Delicious! This March some of the finest restaurants in the world will come together in support of good causes as the first of the three Global Party celebrations of 2015 gets under way.

There have been some fantastic daytime and

evening events at a wide range of locations

from The Savoy and London’s Natural History

Museum to the mountains of Ethiopia and on

board the Orient Express. The Global Party

even reached The Galapagos, Easter Island

and Bhutan. Following the success of 2014 The

Global Party is introducing its audience to some

of the best restaurants on the planet.

The concept is simple. Restaurants host a date

in March and pledge 25% for the day or up to

5% for the entire month food and beverage

spend to support good causes which is split

between The Global Charity Trust and hundreds

of good causes around the world, and a local

charity nominated by the venue. The venues

let their clientele know and The Global Party

publicise it and market it

internationally to their database. The venue

receives an increase in covers and spend, while

being marketed locally and globally. On top of

I caught up with David Johnstone at the legendary American Bar at the Stafford Hotel in London. Johnstone had created The Global Party alongside Lord Stanley Fink as a VIP philanthropic event after being influenced by Jules Verne’s ‘Around the World in Eighty Days’. What started as a philanthropist’s dream now takes place three times a year throughout the months of March, June and September.

Johnstone explained, “Having been in the luxury food and beverage industry myself, I wanted to find a way to let my data base who frequent the finest hotels, restaurants and bars raise funds and awareness for good causes and thought that I could get a handful of venues to participate”. Five years later The Global Party has welcomed on board 390 partners in 311 cities and 120 countries across 5 continents.

As a marketing initiative the venues, who have to be invited to participate, get local and international exposure with the aim of increasing their revenue while generating funds and awareness for good causes. This has proved a hit with restaurant goers as the donations come from the restaurants directly, not from the customer, and allows the customer to give back to good causes simply by picking a participating restaurant. “What I find” says David “is that this helps people try something new – after all if you have a social conscience and like to eat out why wouldn’t you go to a carefully selected and recommended restaurant that thinks like you?”.

We didn’t have 80 days spare so David suggested we go ‘Around the World in 18 Plates’. “As we’re at the American Bar we should start with my favourite cocktail, The Americano. Created by Gaspare Campari in the 1860’s, I’ve always loved it since reading that it was the first drink ordered by James Bond in Ian Fleming’s first Bond novel, ‘Casino Royale’.“

Drink in hand, I sit back in an armchair steeped in history and prepare to discuss some of The Global Party venues. David asks me to close my eyes and listen. The tape recorder is running and I really should savour the incredibly well-crafted cocktail so I oblige.

“We’re going on a journey” says Johnstone, “we’re going to eat some of the most delicious meals available at some of the finest restaurants and with every mouthful we’re making money for good causes. Sounds good?” I probably nodded. “Excellent – then let’s go. First stop is Chotte-Matte here in London which brings together Peruvian and Japanese cuisine in a totally original way. Everything here is excellent – I always have the peppers to get me going and I’ll also like to try the avocado tempura with smoked purple potato”.

“What did you think of the graffiti wall? It comes to life and lights up at night”. I wanted to remind David that this was a virtual tour and upen opening my eyes see him sitting back, eyes closed and realised that he was actually savouring these places. I quickly closed my eyes as we ‘arrived’ at the Ancora Venezia in Venice.

“This is all about authenticity. We’re a stone’s throw from the Rialto Bridge and the Carbonara with Sea Bass is divine. Now let’s pop back to London and head over to The Lyttleton for the venison”. The Lyttleton’s Executive Head Chef Carlos Martinez has worked in eighteen Michelin Starred restaurants across Europe and his expertise shines through in the succulence of the meat and the perfect accompaniments of Cabanero cabbage and Rioja pearl barley.

David then takes us to Congdu in Seoul for the ”best Korean cuisine out there” where we have ‘Japache’ wrapped “like a gift full of surprises”, a bite of abalone, a tinge of sweetness and perfectly seasoned. After Korea its across to Tel Aviv. We have the oven-baked sea fish with truffle sauce in the Ciella Rooftop Lounge at the Alexander Hotel while looking out across the sea. For a moment I feel like I can taste the fish, smell the ocean and hear the energy of Tel Aviv before David suddenly says “time for another cocktail”. I open my eyes and put my hand over my glass, one is my limit, only to see David with eyes closed as he barks out “off to Salmontini in London where their mixologists will create a personalised cocktail to match our mood while we tuck into the roasted Salmon with couscous and a harissa sauce”. It’s not long before we’ve ‘cleaned our plates’ and David says “I think we should stick with London and fish so let’s go to Sixty One in Marylebone which is all about big bold flavours”. This casual remark does not prepare me for what is to come. Slow cooked sea bream with carrots, walnuts and grapefruit, cooked just as it should be.

“Time for a light lunch” he cries as in a flash we arrive at M in the city. M is a restaurant with two sides; GRILL and RAW. I told David that I’d been there before when I’d had the perfectly aged, wood cooked fillet of Tajima-Gyu Kobe beef. David knows M well and explains that they are on board for The Global Party in March, June and September. David suggested we have a ‘light lunch’ and introduced me to RAW which is all about small, fast and fresh dishes. We settle on the delicate Argentine beef tartare and follow that with the white chocolate and lavender soup with poached rhubarb. Now I’m not much of a desert man but this was one dish that I don’t think could be bettered.

Over ‘lunch’ David explains why The Global Party works so well. Selecting only the ‘best of the best’ venues around the world has meant that thousands of potential patrons have been introduced to over 500 charities. “To date we have raised over £2,000,000 NET which has gone directly to good causes - that is something

The Global Party has welcomed on board 390 partners in 311 cities and 120 countries across 5 continents

that I am very proud of” says Johnstone, “and our new initiative allowing restaurants and fine dining

establishments to donate a tiny percentage of their food and beverage receipts for the month looks set to raise millions more”.

I should be full but before I can pause for breath we nip around the corner to Clos Maggiore which has been voted London’s most romantic restaurant 4 years running and which sells out Valentine’s Day 8

months in advance. David clearly knows the menu of contemporary French cuisine well and goes straight for the braised shoulder of Loire Valley rabbit.

After the rabbit David asks me what I’d like to try. It’s all been delicious so far and I don’t want to break his stride as the virtual restaurant tour is proving most fulfilling. As it is The Global Party I try to give a clever answer. “Some interesting spices?” I suggest.

“Brilliant” enthuses Johnstone, “I know just the places for you. Let’s start off at Restaurant J in Stockholm. The fish and seafood casserole is delicately flavoured with Saffron and Sweden is a great place for fresh fish and the catch here is brought in daily straight from the sea – you can’t get any fresher. Now let’s head over to Marrakech and the Kasbah Agafay for one of the best lamb tagine’s you’ll ever taste with just the right amount of spices. The flavour here is all about the ingredients with all the herbs, oils and vegetables produced in their organic garden.”

My spice experience didn’t stop there. We were transported back to London to Red Fort, an Indian restaurant where Head Chef Azadur Rahman and his team of seven chefs selected from across

India have mastered the art of Mughal cooking. Every day they use the huge Tandoor ovens to produce over twenty different breads, made to order. At this point my host tells me that spicy food only works for him when done just right and for him it’s important to let every flavour shine through. He ‘orders’ the Scottish lobster with Saffron, garlic, cinnamon and nutmeg which he assures me is how to get a dish “spot on”.

I start to tell David about my experiences in East Africa which brings him back from the last morsel of lobster. He sits bolt upright and exclaims “Spices! Africa! Right!” and we’re off again. This time to Senegal where David has picked out two restaurants; Le Bambou in Saly and Rysara in Dakar. Le Bambou is within The Rhino Hotel Resort and Spa which won the Best International Spa Hotel at the 2014 World Luxury Hotel Awards. David explains that you can get the perfect steak at both these places so we go for the sirloin with Rhino sauce (named after the venue rather than an indication of the ingredients) at Le Bambou. There’s no time to sample the spa today as we zoom over to Dakar for the Argentine Entrecote at Rysara. David explains in fine detail what it takes to make the perfect steak and that the team at Rysara gets it right so I thought it best to show some worldly knowledge by remarking that Dakar was the westernmost city in the Old World and on the African mainland. “I’ll tell you something really interesting about Dakar”, says David, “it’s the home of R & B singer Akon whose real mane is Alioune Thiam”.

“This is going rather well” says David. “I’d like us to cross the pond to the USA but first one quick stopover in Bucharest at the AGO restaurant for the tagliatelle with duck ragu”. I can’t really say no, after all he is paying – I hope! “This is what I call a sensory experience” remarks Johnstone, “here it is all about textures and contrasts alongside presentation of the highest standard”. Sounds delicious.

Finally we arrive in the USA. “Let’s go to the Polo Lounge” says David. The Polo Lounge at the legendary Beverly Hills Hotel has been the favourite watering hole for generations of stars and Hollywood

deal-makers. “Time for something really special”, he says as he orders the white truffle risotto. “This is made with 4 grams of

Alba truffle and is as good as a dish can get – and the great thing is the more I eat the more good causes benefit!

The Global Party has been staged in many of the world’s great cities as well as remote locations including The Galapagos, Bhutan and even Easter Island. Before our virtual gastronomic world tour heads back to London we stop off at the Honi Honi Tiki Cocktail Lounge in Hong Kong. Max Traverse mixes up a fantastic selection of rum based cocktails and played host to international super chef Gordon Ramsay at the last Global Party. In keeping with the spirit of our adventure David recommends we try the ‘Around The World’ made with four kinds of Rum including the Pampero 1938 and topped up with Taittinger Brut champagne.

Then just like Phineas Fogg on the 80th day we race back to London. At least we would have done if we weren’t actually still in London. Instead we jump in a cab and head over to our final destination. All this talk about food has made me hungry and I’m pleased when we walk through the actual door of Roast. Roast is a great venue, set in the iconic Floral Hall at Borough Market. The building was largely ignored before restaurateur Iqbal Wahhab, founder of the Cinnamon Club, created Roast.

“We’ve eaten our way around the world and we’re back in time for dinner so let’s treat ourselves to some perfect British cuisine”. Before long we are tucking into chargrilled Aubrey’s 28 day dry-aged rib eye steak with chips and béarnaise sauce – and all for a worthwhile cause.

“See you in June” cries David “for our next mouth-watering adventure”. Finally full, we part ways. It’s been an epic experience to savour and amazingly I’m already wondering where and what I’ll be eating next.
