The band has been very busy with holiday concerts fast approaching and the start of our winter/spring ensembles including Jazz

Ensemble, Jazz Lab Band, and Pep Band. We have begun work on Solo/Ensemble Contest. We will be attending the Ohio Music

Education Association Contest this year. Please encourage your son or daughter to participate in this contest, as it will really

    improve their musicianship.

    Online Calendar:

The online music calendar is up to date. Please print and/or sync to your phone. Please plan ahead so that there are no conflicts

    or unpleasant surprises.

Jazz Rehearsals are mandatory. Jazz Lab Band meets on Tuesdays from 3-4:30 p.m. weekly. Jazz Ensemble meets Monday’s and Wednesday’s from 3-4:30 p.m. weekly.

Holiday Concert is Wednesday, December 14th @ 7 p.m. Students need to be here by 6:15 p.m. for warm up and lineup. Students are required to stay for the entire performance.

    Wind Ensemble Rehearsal January 24th 6-8 p.m.

Kent State University Jazz Program Concert is on Thursday, January 26th at 7 p.m. here in the auditorium. This concert will feature the Kent State Jazz Band, Jazz Combo, and Vocal Jazz Ensemble.

O.M.E.A. Solo/Ensemble Contest is Saturday, February 11th. Times are t.b.a. but are usually in the morning and early afternoon. Money and forms are due back to me by Friday, December 16th.

    Practicing:

It is a requirement (homework) that students practice at home for this class. The instrument should come home several nights a

week, and the weekend. Help them to find a quiet place with few distractions at home that has a wire music stand and chair so

they can sit with good posture. The exception should be when they don’t practice, not when they do. We will have playing exams

coming up so it’s best they stay on top of their music early.

    Private Lessons:

I would like to see everyone take advantage of private lessons. Email me and I would be happy to assist you with finding a great

teacher. Private lessons allow your student to have a deeper experience in band, as they get better at their instrument.

    Lockers:

Students are required to have locks on their lockers in the music department and they are required to provide the lock. Most

times when students’ items go missing, they were not using a lock on their locker.

    Disney Registration:

I have a list of students who have not yet registered for the trip. If your student is planning on going but have not yet registered,

please do so promptly so we can get our exact numbers finalized. If you have any questions about the trip, please send me an

email. The cutoff is the Wednesday before break. Remember you cannot access your fundraising money if you have not joined

    the Strongsville Instrumental Music Boosters.

    Solo/Ensemble:

Solo/Ensemble is required for Wind Ensemble but I encourage all band members to participate. Last year we had a very large

number of students participate and I am looking to build on that this year. Forms and money are due Friday, December 16th. This

years contest takes place at Tri C main campus on Saturday, February 11th. Times are to be announced but usually are in the

    morning and early afternoon.

    Pep Band:

Pep Band signups will be happening soon. Unfortunately due to our space in the gym I cannot take everyone. Seniority is given

priority but everyone is eligible to sign up. Please note we are not performing the two games over holiday break.

    Mr. Hire

    Join REMIND for SHS orchestra!

    Text @shsorch to 81010

Over the next few months, we have numerous activities, performances, and of course our Disney trip planned. Please check the SHS Music Department calendar, and your orchestra remind texts for updates and other important information. Two-Hour Delay Policy: The Strongsville City Schools has implemented a new, two-hour delay schedule. Should a two-hour delay schedule occur the date of a concert or special rehearsal, the concert/rehearsal will STILL occur as planned. Holiday Choir Concert: The SHS Symphony Orchestra will be performing the Hallelujah Chorus with the SHS Choirs on Monday, December 12th. The concert is open to all, and begins at 7:00 pm in the SHS Auditorium Holiday Orchestra Concert: Our annual Holiday Orchestra Concert will take place on Tuesday, December 13 at 7:00 pm in the SHS Auditorium. Join us as you hear a variety of seasonal music including festive carols, the music of J.S. Bach, Elgar’s beautiful Nimrod from Enigma Variations and the annual singing of the Hallelujah Chorus. Solo and Ensemble Contest Registration Deadline: Solo and Ensemble Contest Registration forms and fees are Due Friday, December 16. Solos are $18 and Ensembles are $23 (divided amongst the members). Please make checks payable to SIMB. This deadline is a slight change from the date originally printed in earlier publications. We need to allow plenty of time to register all entry’s and make certain all information is accurate. Here are a few IMPORTANT considerations. Soloists must perform with an accompanist.

Students who are soloing should find a professional accompanist as soon as possible since they are in high demand. A list of accompanist is on the orchestra board in the orchestra room.

Soloists need to be familiar with the scale requirements for his or her instrument (found on the OMEA website). All soloists and ensembles MUST perform a piece of music that is on the approved contest list. Lists can be found at omea-

ohio.org. Everyone must have an ORIGINAL score for the judge with every measure numbered. Failure to do so will result in a lowered

    rating.

Students should not wear their orchestra uniforms to solo and ensemble contest. Instead they should wear black dress pants, black dress shoes, and a white dress shirt with tie (boys), or white dress blouse.

Contest Rehearsal Schedule With the arrival of January, our orchestras will soon be immersed in State Orchestra Contest preparation which includes several evening rehearsals. Please check the orchestra schedule distributed in August, and/or the SHS Music Department website for these dates. The evening rehearsals provide the opportunity to focus our preparation without the daily distractions at school and to work with guest conductors. These rehearsals have also helped our preparation during those cold, snowy winters when we have lost numerous school days. OMEA Professional Conference Performance As you know, the SHS Symphony Orchestra was selected to perform at the 2017 OMEA Professional Development Conference at the Cleveland Convention Center. Our performance time is Saturday, February 4, at 9:15 am, in room CC26 at the Convention Center. This performance is free and open to anyone who wants to attend. We would love to have a nice crowd of Strongsville parents in attendance. We will also need orchestra parent chaperones to depart to and from SHS the morning of Feb. 4. It is a huge honor to be selected to perform at this prestigious event featuring the very best school performing ensembles. The students have been busy working on our musical selections for this premier event. An itinerary and chaperone information will be forthcoming. Cont next page

    State Orchestra Contest

We will be in need of parent volunteers to assist on Friday, February 24 since we will be hosting OMEA State Orchestra

Contest. Adult jobs include working contest headquarters, providing meals for the adjudicators, and helping with concessions.

More information will be forthcoming. We can expect between 10-12 high school orchestras to be performing, including our

    own!

If you have any questions or concerns, please email me [email protected], Other important information can

be found on the SHS Music Department website or the SHS Orchestra website through strongnet.org.

Musically, Andrew Hire Director of Orchestras

’Tis the season for many concerts! We are extremely excited for the upcoming performances this December, and the band kicks off the concert series on December 7th at 7 pm. The students have been working really hard and have had their first experiences rehearsing on the new stage! The band concert features the 6th grade, 7th grade and 8th grade bands as well as the 8th grade Jazz Band Green.

The 7th grade jazz band white just began rehearsing this week. This is exciting to have

enough interest in two different jazz bands. This group is learning about the

fundamentals of jazz and will be featured on upcoming concerts in 2017.

The middle school Featured Winds group is a volunteer honors band that is new this

year. They are working on music that will stretch their musicianship and give them

different performance opportunities throughout the year.

Looking ahead - At the beginning of May, we will be hosting the OMEA Large Group

Adjudicated Event for Middle School at SMS. We will need plenty of help both from our

middle school families, but also high school students. This is an excellent opportunity

    for service hours!

    Exciting Fundraiser with ZOUP!

Our local ZOUP! will be available before

band (12/13) and orchestra concerts (12/14)

selling cups of ZOUP! Soup for $2 a cup. All profits will

go directly to SIMB. They also will be available at the

    choir concert (12/12).

The owner of ZOUP! in Strongsville is a former

Strongsville graduate and member of SHS choir. Let’s

show our support for local business and SIMB by coming

to the concerts hungry for some hot and delicious

    ZOUP!

ZOUP! Is also hosting a spirit night on December 16th.

25% of proceeds from that night will donated to SIMB.

Again, please support your student, SIMB, and local

    business.

    HEY, Musical Mustang Supporters!!!

BASKETBALL CONCESSIONS WILL BE STARTING SOON!

We need your help! Boys Basketball season will start in mid December, there are lots

of jobs at our concession stands that need to be filled by both adults and students.

Please consider volunteering once or twice during the season. You are helping ALL

Strongsville Band and Orchestra Students. We have indoor facilities, good food,

training for new volunteers and great fun! Most of this year's games will be well

attended and we need many hands to share the work.

And just think....if all of the slots were filled, we would not need to continually ask for

    volunteers!

Please remember that I am trying to reach many volunteers. Some people take

the whole schedule and write it in their calendars the first time they see it and there

are others who decide to sign up the week or day of an event. Therefore, we will

continue to publish the schedule multiple times to get all of the slots full, to try and

reach everyone. We do not expect anyone to work all of the events, but please work

one or two in a season.

The actual list of games and links will be posted on the SIMB Website under

    Volunteer Opportunities.

If you have any questions you can contact either:

Sharon Alley at 216-410-2251 (no texting)

    or [email protected] or

I am very honored to know and get

to see so many of the gifted

    students from Strongsville High

    School perform at community

    concerts!

    Congratulations to all of SHS

students who perform in many of the

    area's Advanced Ensembles. You

Hospitality/Social Committee The Hospitality Committee wrapped up Fall with the SHS Marching Mustangs Sounds of the

Stadium Post Season Concert and Potluck Banquet on Tuesday, November 1st. The celebration

concert was performed in the main gymnasium in full uniform and included all the music and

dance routines from our 2016 pregame and halftime programs.

Superintendent Ryba, once a high school marching band trumpeter himself, gave inspiring and

encouraging remarks to close the concert portion. A delicious potluck dinner shared by 500+

band members, families, and friends, followed in the cafeteria and then concluded with

awards/recognition and a slide show of season highlights.

Many thanks to the steadfast volunteers who helped that evening:

Connie Barefield, Hitomi Boardman, Angela Hamper, Marlene Kinney, Lori & Bob

Kovatich, Diane Lichtenberg, Dana Mayo, Mary Anne Messina, Pam Mullen, Hollie &

Mark Rasnick, Tamara Reik, Sonja Simul, Ron Trepke, Trisha Weaver, Laura Wolford.

It was an energized evening and I greatly appreciate your dedicated efforts to making it special

    and exciting... Let's Go 'Stangs!

ATTENTION BAND/ORCHESTRA FAMILIES - LAST CALL for serveware

Now that the big Thanksgiving dinners are behind us, you may have noticed there were missing

servingware pieces from your kitchens. Everything that was labeled with identification should

have been returned by now, but there are still many items left behind from both band and

orchestra potlucks. They have been removed from the band room but if you are missing

anything, big or small, please contact me ([email protected]/440-773-4806, text ok). All

unclaimed items will be either discarded or donated after the Winter break.

Wishing everyone a Happy Holiday, Faye Trepke

A big Thank You to those who assisted our marching band students during the season: Jean Moffit, Margaret Brown,

    without you!

NEW VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED FOR NEXT YEAR. Come and join us for one game or all of them, get to know the

students, see the game up close and personal, view the pregame and 1/2 time shows every time, and develop

great friendships with other band parents....no experience necessary.

A Heartfelt THANKS to those who served Our students every uniform need,

From shoes, to gloves, to hats not found, A parent to respond with items and speed.

Some have 'worked' all four years

While others just one night, we'll deeply miss our devoted senior parents Jean Moffit, Margaret Brown, and Beth Reik.

And THANKS to those who took

Lots of action pictures of the band...some quite fancy. From the stands to the field and all around,

Thanks to Michelle and Melissa Pavlik, Sandy Treudler, and Stephen Polansky. CHRISTMAS GIFT IDEAS

WANTED: ALL MARCHING UNIFORMS SHOULD HAVE BEEN RETURNED TO THE UNIFORM ROOM...if you see a green

garment bag with uniform at your house, please return ASAP.

Uniform Dry Cleaning issues: We understand many of you experienced issues this year with the recommended dry

cleaner. We have rarely experienced such issues in year's past and attribute them to the unavailable constant presence of

the owner who travelled for several weeks out of the country for the passing of his mother. Anyone who owns a small

business will understand that substitute employees may not know all of the normal procedures which keep things moving

smoothly. We offer our heartfelt sympathy to the owner and look forward to smoother returns in the future.

Wishing all the best to our Senior Marching Mustangs,
