Why There Are No Bodies of

    Water in Saudi Arabia

"Mur-habba! Hello! Care to buy some dates?" An old

seller rumbled. "Freshest dates from the Red Sea to

Mecca, and you won't find any worms!"

Agullible little boy ran up to the seller and handed

    him two Saudi Riyal.

"I'll have a whole box please!" He squeaked with the

    likeliness of a common dormouse.

The man quietly slipped the money in his bag andgave the boy the dates. The date seller had a sly

smile as the boy ran off, obviously knowing

    something the boy did not.

Suddenly a young man from a nomadic tribe came

running into the market yelling, Help! Help! There is

a girl! She washed up from the river; I do not know

    where she came from!"

The river was about a mile away, so some helpful

village folk scrambled forward to help the man sit

and drink some water while he explained his tale.

"I was filling my water skins, when I heard a splash

behind the bushes. I thought a fish had gone the

wrong way and had given up hope of reaching the

ocean, but instead, there was a girl no younger than

  • 7/29/2019 The Mysterious Stranger: Why There Are No Bodies of Water in Saudi Arabia

    3/32

12 and no older than 15!" He took a lengthy sip of

the water and continued. "I saw here and tested for

a pulse, thought I was sure she was dead. But sure

enough, she was alive! I ran right back here for

help!" The villagers were dumbfounded. They

gathered a medical kit, a stretcher, and other helpful

items to deal with their mysterious stranger.

    * * *

After the short hike back to the river, they arrived

only to find no river at all. The girl from the man's

story was sitting up, amusing herself with rocks and

    sticks.

"Where is the water? What has happened to the

water?" One of the men yelled.

The girl simply looked at the band of strangers. They

    stared back.

A different man stepped forward and asked the girlquietly, "Where have you come from?"

"I don't know," she replied after thought.

"Why are you here?" He said a little louder.

  • 7/29/2019 The Mysterious Stranger: Why There Are No Bodies of Water in Saudi Arabia

    4/32

    "I don't know," she repeated.

"Where are your parents?" He said, straightening his

back and showing he meant business. The girl justshrugged. The man asked, "Do you remember

    nothing of your past?"

    "Nothing."

The men looked at each other, egging the other to

say something so they wouldn't have too. Finally onedecided out loud that they should bring her to the

village. Bringing her along, they trekked back home,

the thought of the empty river flashing in their minds

again. No one mentioned it, though.

    * * *

Arriving back at the village, they got stares as they

scurried down the streets towards the hospital. The

girl seemed fine, but obviously had some amnesia.

They gathered around the square, and answered the

question the villagers and nomads had. The eldest

of the visiting nomad tribe stepped forward. "This

peculiar pickle we have ourselves in with our river,"

  • 7/29/2019 The Mysterious Stranger: Why There Are No Bodies of Water in Saudi Arabia

    5/32

He started while pointing a thin, fragile finger

towards the direction of the river, "Is much like a

story my mother used to tell me when I was little. A

jerboa who always tried to take over the world and

overthrow god. He was a clever fellow; always would

take something people usually overlooked, but they

found they needed it greatly. He would get thwarted,

of course, but doesn't it sound familiar?"

"Are you saying that we take water for granted?"Asked one of the beggars.

"No, not all of us. But the rich, the people in the

King's palace. Have you ever stopped to wonder

why they never pay us attention? They have

everything they need and want, and by the way theytreat us, they must be taking some things for

granted." The old man watched the crowd for a

reaction. A man named Muhammad spoke up.

"So we are being defeated by a Folktale?"

"I never said that it went exactly along the lines of

the yarn, but maybe God is sending a message to

    us." The aging nomad replied.

  • 7/29/2019 The Mysterious Stranger: Why There Are No Bodies of Water in Saudi Arabia

    6/32

The crowd and the old nomad continued their

conversation, and after a good while the crowd

started to disperse. The men went home, and took

stock of their supplies, and warned their wives of the

    incident.

    * * *

The next day the temperature was deathly hot, and

most people stayed inside. The sweet and salty

smells of mezze wafted through the humid air, and

into the dry nostrils of the slaves who were bringing

coffee to the nomads. The only people not

suffocating from the terrible heat were the same old

man from the day before and the young girl that had

    been released from the hospital.

Tell my story again, please? The girl asked, her

giant brown eyes glistening from the suns ray.

But tell me my dear, the old man stopped smiling,

do you believe what I am telling you?

Of course I do! I believe you, and I dont see why

anyone wouldnt. The girl looked the man straight in

  • 7/29/2019 The Mysterious Stranger: Why There Are No Bodies of Water in Saudi Arabia

    7/32

the eye, every inch of her glowing brown face

    serious.

Before I repeat my story, tell me child, would you gosave us from the bad Jerboa in the story?

Yes! You are the only one who has shown me love

since I have got here. If it means I keep you safe, Ill

do it! She stood on the edge of the fountain they

were sitting on, and placed her hands on her slim

    hips.

You are a strong girl, maybe you can save us all,

the old man whispered, staring off towards the now

empty river. Louder, he said, Come; let me tell you

    the story again.

As the old man ended his story for the third time,

a young boy from his nomad tribe came running

past, and tripped on a stone lodged in the street.

The girl ran and helped him up. But the poor boy

was unable to put any weight on his foot. Leaning

forward, the young girl gingerly touched his ankle.

    Twisted. She muttered.

But I have to speak with the King! The boy yelped

while struggling to get up, but failing.

  • 7/29/2019 The Mysterious Stranger: Why There Are No Bodies of Water in Saudi Arabia

    8/32

Tell me what you must say, and I will tell him. I will

explain to him how you were supposed to come, but

you have injured yourself. She smiled down at him,

    showing she meant no harm.

A nomad tribe has come. They too have noticed

rivers emptying. We do not know why this is

happening. We dont know why God is punishing us

like this. The boy sadly looked down at his ankle.

Come, let us take you home, The old man had

appeared behind the two children, and then we will

    deliver your message.

    * * *

Arriving at the Kings Palace, the girl and the old

man were amazed by the extravagant designs.

Down the first hallway to the throne room, there was

pure white marble as flooring, and honey-brown

tables pushed up next to the walls. On each table 3

bouquets of flowers were set in glass vases. After

several even more beautiful hallways, they reached

the huge, date tree wood doors. They waited for at

least thirty minutes before the Kings assistant let

  • 7/29/2019 The Mysterious Stranger: Why There Are No Bodies of Water in Saudi Arabia

    9/32

them in. They slowly walked into the room, and

    bowed before the king.

What do you want? The king questioned them, looking quite bored.

We bring a message, from one of the village boys.

    The man said.

Why isnt he delivering it himself? Whyd he send

such and old man like you? And a young girl whoclaims she doesnt know anything of what happened

before she got here. Explain how that is a good

    idea?

Umm... Your Majesty..... I think the message is

more- The girl cut the old man off.

Because he was in such a rush to get here, he

slipped and injured himself. We were the only ones

there to help him, and so after making sure he got

home safely, we came here to deliver the message

for him. The King only stared at the girl.

What is your name, dear? He asked, in a voice that

was too sweet to be trusted. He had an obvious

    dislike for her.

  • 7/29/2019 The Mysterious Stranger: Why There Are No Bodies of Water in Saudi Arabia

    10/32

A moment of panic washed through her. What was

her name? She turned towards the old man. He

smiled, and turned towards the King.

Her name is Aamina. He said his voice sincere.

    Aamina? How interesting.

Can we tell you our message? The girl, now

named Aamina, said, interrupting the Kings

    thoughts.

Yes, Aamina, go ahead. The King muttered with a

    wave of his hand.

Aamina described their predicament, and the King

stared at the wall with disinterest. After a whole

minute of silence, he spoke up.

Okay. Advisor! Tell everyone to stock up for the

drought, get all emergency supplies ready. Then he

said towards Aamina and the old man, Im afraid

there really is nothing we can do.

    * * *

  • 7/29/2019 The Mysterious Stranger: Why There Are No Bodies of Water in Saudi Arabia

    11/32

That night, the old man and Aamina sat quietly

eating their pita bread and drinking their coffee.

Whyd you choose the name Aamina? I love it,but... the King acted weird when you told him.

Aamina stared at the aged man with large, dark

    brown, curious eyes.

It means Safety. I dont think the King trusts you,

because its not every day a young girl shows up at

    an empty riverbank with no memory. But forget him;

he hasnt been that great of a ruler. Doesnt do

much. He looked back down at his bread, But I

know something that he doesnt. I would have told

him, but he would have called me crazy and possibly

tied me up. Aamina, this is no regular drought. Noriver can dry up that fast without the help of

    something magical. Something insane.

    The story istrue, isnt it?

    Yes.

    * * *

The plan was set. The old man's nomad tribe was

set to leave at noon in two days. The girl would go

  • 7/29/2019 The Mysterious Stranger: Why There Are No Bodies of Water in Saudi Arabia

    12/32

with them. The group would travel to the Red Sea,

the only body of water that was increasing instead of

disappearing. There they would figure out what was

going on. When the two days arrived, they set off.

Only three days they had traveled, mostly through

new deserts that had appeared. That night they

heard large rumble. It was coming from a monstrous

mountain on the other side of the dry lake they were

camping at. Two of the strongest men got up tocheck out what was going on. They hiked to the

base of the mountain and came face to face with a

    giant pelican.

qu-qu-qee!The Pelican let out a monstrous, ear

popping noise. It was half the size of the tallest man.It rustled its wings, waddled over to the dry riverbed,

and poked its beak into the ground, sending another

earthquake through the desert. It ignored the men,

until they drew their swords, and then suddenly...

    gulp!They were pelican food.

Back at the campsite, people were starting to get

worried about the men. Aamina was getting sword

fighting lessons from one of the young boys, and the

elder nomads sat with their coffee and watched.

  • 7/29/2019 The Mysterious Stranger: Why There Are No Bodies of Water in Saudi Arabia

    13/32

Should we send a group for help? An old woman

    asked.

Its been quite a while, and the earthquakes haventstopped, so I agree with Maja.

    Can I go? Aamina asked.

Aamira, you need to be trained, and you are much

    too young! Maja said.

Please? I think I got the hang of it now!

Aamira, fighting is not ladylike, you are to-

Oh let her, go! Shell be with the men, and theyll

make sure nothing harms her. Another elder

suggested, cutting Maja off. So she grabbed her

sword and ran off with group of men.

Upon reaching the base, they saw the great pelican

and theircomrades swords. The pelican, being so

big, was still hungry, so he saw the new troop as

another snack or maybe as an entree. He charged

forward making is irritating qu-qu!sound, and themen scattered. Aamira leapt to the right, and tripped.

She picked herself up and ran for a path leading up

the mountain. The rest of the men played dead,

  • 7/29/2019 The Mysterious Stranger: Why There Are No Bodies of Water in Saudi Arabia

    14/32

hoping the monster would lose interest. It worked,

almost. The monstrous foul chased Aamira up the

path, trampling anything in its way, including 3 of the

men. Aaminas throat burned as she slipped and

stumbled up the steep path, but she kept running,

hoping the giant pelican would have a hard time

coming up with its webbed feet. She was semi-right.

The bird couldnt waddle up the path, so it flew. It

landed right in front of Aamira, scaring her andmaking her slip. She tumbled down the path,

heading for the edge of a cliff. It would be a 30 meter

fall if she couldnt catch anything. Luckily, the hem of

her sleeve caught a root, and only half her body

dangled off the cliff. Her side burned, like someone

was holding a burning coal against it and wasrefusing to let go. Her sleeve started to tear with a

    horrifying kr-kr-krrriiipp!The pelican had waddled

carefully over and was leaning forward to the

terrified girl. Suddenly she remembered her sword,

and she grabbed it off her belt and slashed at the

bird. She produced a cut in the wing, and the birdroared in pain. Unfortunately, the sudden

movements and adjustments so that she could

swing made her sleeve completely tear, and she had

  • 7/29/2019 The Mysterious Stranger: Why There Are No Bodies of Water in Saudi Arabia

    15/32

to grab the edge of the cliff with both hands letting

the sword drop. Aamina watched as the pelican flew

off squawking and stumbling in the sky. She tried to

climb back up onto the ledge, but when she moved,

pain enveloped her body. A young boy from the

group came running up, she made a squeak and he

saw her through the bushes, hanging on for dear

life. Hoisting her up, he lay her down on the ground

and called for the others. Aamira looked at the boy,and she recognized him.

Youre the boy with the twisted ankle, she

    muttered.

Well, it isnt twisted anymore, he said with smile.

One man came with a medical kit, and told the boy,Abdullah is dead. So is Adnan. Ahmad is alive, but

    badly injured.

The boy started to cry, and got up. He ran back to

where the others were. The man turned towards

Aamina and said with a tear in his eye, Abdullah

was his father, and Ahmad is his brother. The poor

boy, he muttered, while he shook his head in

    disbelief.

  • 7/29/2019 The Mysterious Stranger: Why There Are No Bodies of Water in Saudi Arabia

    16/32

Aamina felt extremely guilty. She thought to herself,

I had gotten the bird to go up the hill. I had gotten

them hurt. It was MY fault that the boy was grieving.

She was deep in self-pity, when the man who had

delivered the news touched her injured side. She

    yelped, and he jumped back.

Mighty cut you got there, he muttered. He pulled

her up on her feet. Can you stand? he asked.

    Maybe, she moaned.

She stood, swaying like a leaf, before muttering

    something incomprehensible that sounded like,

    Pelican....... death...............evil potatoes....

    Then she fainted.

    * * *

When Aamina woke, they tribe was in a new village.

She sat up groggily in her uncomfortable bed, unaware of the boy watching her, the same boy who

had twisted his ankle, the same boy who had come

running to her aid when she was hurt.

  • 7/29/2019 The Mysterious Stranger: Why There Are No Bodies of Water in Saudi Arabia

    17/32

How are you feeling? he asked, calmly. The calm

approach didnt work though, and she ended up

    screaming in his face.

GAH! Calm down! he yelped. Its okay.

Where are we? She slipped her feet off the bed

and touched them to the cool mud floor.

Were in Jiddah. Nearly to the coast! he said, with a

cheesy grin that really irritated Aamina. There wasan awkward silence as they just sat and stared at

    each other.

Finally Aamina whispered, Im sorry about your dad

and brother. Is your brother better? She felt like she

was intruding, but she felt so guilty and horrified she

just had to know it hadnt been all bad.

    Yes... He..uhh...Hes still unconscious... and

broken... but good. And once again there was the

cheesy grin, but she could see the pain in his eyes,

and the longing to cry out for help.

And the pelican...? She paused, unsure on

whether it was safe to continue this risky

    conversation.

  • 7/29/2019 The Mysterious Stranger: Why There Are No Bodies of Water in Saudi Arabia

    18/32

Well, we havent seen it. I guess monster birds

enjoy the Sarawat Mountains more than the coast.

Why wont he stop it with that stupid smile of his?Amina thought.

You know, while you were sleeping a bird pooped

on you. He started to giggle. It was funny.

Oh, that... great... I guess, she muttered. On the

inside though, she was telling him: If you dont wipethat IDIOTIC grin off your face, Ill slap you so HARD

    youll fly to RIYADH!

But he kept smiling and laughing, so she slapped

    him.

What was that for? he yelped.

Your smile irritates me. Inside, she wanted to get

him annoyed. But he brushed it off and said,

I try very hard to annoy little girls.

Shut up. She muttered, before erupting in a fit of

laughter. For an hour or so they chatted, and shelearned quite a lot about the boy. His name was

Aasim, he enjoyed hunting and climbing trees, in his

family there was his mom, dad, four brothers, two

  • 7/29/2019 The Mysterious Stranger: Why There Are No Bodies of Water in Saudi Arabia

    19/32

sisters, and him. Of course, now it was his mom,

three brothers, two sisters, and him.

Just as the sun was setting, a harassed man wholooked to be in his early twenties came running into

the tent. He looked at the Aasim and said,

    Hes gone.

Aamina was whisked away by a preoccupied Aasim

and the harassed man.Hello? Mur-habba? Whats going on? She tripped

on her own foot, but managed to steady herself.

Neither of her escorts spoke. They merely glanced

at each other before heading forward even faster.

Aasim and the man stopped suddenly in front of asmall tent. As they stood quietly Aamina recognized

the tent. It was the tent of the old man.

Is he....? she whispered. They both nodded. Pain

and sorrow fished their way to her heart, and

Aaminas knees buckled. She cried and cried

outside his tent, while Aasim and the man watched.

Asim knew what it was like, and watched with

empathy at the grieving girl. After a while, she

plucked up her courage and went in. Some of the

  • 7/29/2019 The Mysterious Stranger: Why There Are No Bodies of Water in Saudi Arabia

    20/32

old men and women were besides his frail, pale,

motionless body. Aamina sat at the foot of his bed,

    and whispered,

If it means saving you, Ill do it.

Everyone was silent the rest of the night. Three

people to grieve for was three too many.

    * * *

That night, Aamina couldnt sleep. She held her

pillow tight to her chest as she stared at the door,

sitting up in her bed. Her head hurt, and so did her

heart. Her thoughts were a jumbled mess, except for

one thing. Deep in the back of her head she could

hear herself saying, If it means saving you, Ill do it,

over and over again. A plan started to formulate in

the back of her mind, giving means to her leaden

    limbs.

First she gathered supplies. She filled a bag with

food, water, clothes, a tent kit, and a map. Then shetip-toed out of her tent and snuck intoAasims.

Clasping her hand over his mouth so he didnt

accidentally wake the others, she slowly roused him.

  • 7/29/2019 The Mysterious Stranger: Why There Are No Bodies of Water in Saudi Arabia

    21/32

Pulling the shirtless, half asleep boy out of the tent,

she explained her plan. He immediately fully woke

    up, and then slapped her.

    Youve gone mad, he whispered.

I swear I havent! But I cant just sit here! Were

taking to long! By the time we get there, we would

    have died from thirst!

We wont reach there if we die of thir-

    I DONT CARE!

Fine, keep your voice down, he muttered. So,

youre saying we run away, fix the water problem,

    and save the world?

I guess so.... She managed a weak smile. Whatdo you say?

There was silence, where Aasim kept looking back

at the tent and then off in the distance, then back at

the tent again. Okay,he said. Ill do it.

After packing Aasims bag and leaving a note, theywalked off into the dark night.

    * * *

  • 7/29/2019 The Mysterious Stranger: Why There Are No Bodies of Water in Saudi Arabia

    22/32

By morning they had reached the water of the Red

Sea. They walked the beaches over and over,

hoping for a sign that this trip hadnt been in vain.

They didnt find anything, so they sat down and let

the cool water massage their burning feet.

After about an hour of the peaceful sensation, Aasim

saw something in the trees. A path was secretly

hidden between two bushes. Gathering theirbelongings, the two children headed for the trees.

Following the path, the noticed more and more paths

branching off, and they could hear running water

coming from a few of them. As they kept walking the

weirder things got. Some trees were bent at odd

angles, but they didnt look like they were naturallyset that way. Twenty minutes passed and suddenly

SLAM!Aamina hit a hidden building. Shoving leaves

aside, they came into a clearing. There was a huge

lake with about one hundred small canals winding

away towards the mainland. Aasim took a step

forward and immediately was attacked by an

ambush of coconuts. When the frenzy of killer fruits

was over, he was lying unconscious on the ground,

his head bleeding. Aamina watched in horror as the

  • 7/29/2019 The Mysterious Stranger: Why There Are No Bodies of Water in Saudi Arabia

    23/32

blood trickled down his cheek. She leaned down,

ripped some of her shirt, and tried to make a

bandage. Then she dragged him behind a bush,

where hopefully no one would find him.

After several cautious circles around the lake, she

was starting to get worried. It was creepy enough

with the building and the canals, but nothing was

happening as she walked. Maybe the place is

abandonedShe thought. Maybe, but you might wantto knock on the door, it doesnt look like this place

was abandoned ever. But no one has show up yet!

Patience is a virtue. Shut up. YOU SHUT UP! NO,

    YOU SHUT UP!

As her mind had a very heated conversation, shetip-toed to the door. She knocked, then ducked in

fear of security. The door swung open, revealing a

    honey badger. Aamina screamed.

A honey badger?!?!? HEELLLPPPP!!!!!! she yelled,

know no one would probably hear her. Honey

badgers were the most feared animal around the

villages. They were ruthless killers if a village pet got

in their way. The villagers knew to stay away, far

away from the animal. The honey badger whipped

  • 7/29/2019 The Mysterious Stranger: Why There Are No Bodies of Water in Saudi Arabia

    24/32

out a sword and pressed it against her neck, forcing

    her to be quiet.

    Go away, he commanded.

    I need help...

GO away, he said, baring his sharp teeth.

    But-

    NOW! the honey badger roared.

Scrambling backwards, she fell into the lake. She

glanced at the canals, and she realized something.

Youve been stealing the water, she mumbled.

Oh. Its you. Scared away my friend back in the

mountains, not happy about that, neither is he. Andwith that the giant pelican from the Sarawat

Mountains came out from the bushes with Aasims

    body in his beak.

AASIM! The honey badger cackled. Aamina

continued to yell his name in desperation. Maybe.....

Justmaybe hell hear me! I have to try! I HAVE

    TOO!!she thought.

And..., the honey badger continued, youve seen

this. Aamina watched as his little paw scanned the

trees. Ill have to kill you now, the honey badger

    said, indifferently.

Jumping up, Aamina took off through the tangled

trees, while the pelican and honey badger all

followed after her. How is this even possible? Her

mind moaned. Its a HONEY BADGER of all things!

And a pelican!A small voice in the back of her head, probably the only sanity she had left, calmly spoke

up. The pelican is half the size of a man, the honey

badger can stand on his hind legs, talk and use a

sword. Run faster. Her mind was getting extremely

irritating now. Being so lost in thought, she slammed

into a tree trunk and hit the ground.

Ouchie. She mumbled. The little personal trainer

inside her head started to give her a pep talk as she

lay there. WHAT YOU THINK YOU DOING JUST

LYING THERE? GET UP! NOW! OR YOU GONNA

GET KILLED!Aamina rolled onto her stomach andpushed herself onto her knees. She made it into

squatting position when she heard her pursuers in

    the trees.

No. Im too late. Theyll hear me escape, she

whispered. She slunk into the coverage of a shrub

the size of a kiddie tent. The only thing she could her

in the woods was the taunts of the murderous honey

    badger.

Come onout, you stupid little girl. I promise itll be

easy. I might even let your little boyfriend live.

Hes not my boyfriend. She muttered menacingly

under her breath. But she was too loud.

I got you now! he yelped, running towards the

    shrub.....

On the other side of the path?

He ran and tackled the pelican who had been

traveling towards the sound of his voice, and the

poor thing had gotten excited when he said, I got

you know! only to find out that the badger had

heard him, not the girl.Aamina took her chance. She dashed back towards

the lake, where Aasim would be. Sure enough, there

he was, his hand just touching the lake. He was

awake, but groggy. And he had gotten a concussion

that gave him the mind of a two year old. She hoped

    it was temporary. And short.

Wa-wa! Wa-wa! he yelp, splashing his hand in the

    water.

Thats great, come on now. She grabbed him

under the arms and dragged him away from the

    lake.

Sword! YAY! he screamed, pointing into the

bushes where he had been attacked the

Armageddon of coconuts. The sunlight glinted of the

sword, and she dove to grab it. Now, dragging

Aasim with one hand, she got them onto the path

    leading to the beach.

Aasim was heavy now, and she was getting tired. I

wonder what would happen if I hit him again. It was

a wild thought, but it was worth it. Slamming the butt

of her sword against the top of his head, he

immediately snapped back to his 13 year old self.

    Wha....? he mummbled.

Killer badger.... the stupid pelican is back.... stealing

the water.... your three years old..... beach.. she

panted out the whole story in bits and pieces. Finally

when they were about seventy feet away from the

path, she dropped Aasim onto the mushy sand, and

    collapsed onto her knees.

Cant the pelican fly? Aasim groaned, looking up

    into the sky.

Too much tree... cant spread wings. Aamina

gasped for air while massaging her limbs. They

knew they didnt have much time. If they could get

away, they could warn the nomads, and they could

come prepared. Unfortunately, they were both in bad

shape to try and make it off the beach before the

animals arrived. So they stood their ground. Aamina

still held the sword, while Aasim was armed withshallow water shellfish and rocks.

When their foes reached the beach, the pelican

immediately took flight, while the honey badger held

his sword in his mouth and ran down the beach on

all fours. Aasim started pelting the bird with rocks

whenever he came within throwing distance. Aamina

took the honey badger on in sword combat. Cling!

Shik! QEEEE!were the only sounds heard on the

beach, along with the grunting of the two children

and the truiumphant cries of the animals.

Aasim ran out of rocks and shellfish as quickly as hecould gather them. Aamina stuck as many times as

she could but he parried or blocked every one of

    them.

Aamina concentrated solely on her opponent; she

was getting distracted making sure that Aasim didnt

revert back to the three year old version. Strike left

leg. Now right shoulder. Parry. Block. Block. DUCK!

She reminded herself what to do in her mind, but

things were getting complicated. Slash!Aamina got

too distracted on her own thoughts, and he

managed to create a gash in her shoulder. Yellingout in pain, she saw Aasim out of the corner of her

eye, chucking sand at the pelicans eyes. Aasim

stared back at her, and then Gulp!the pelican

popped him into his mouth like he was a kofta meat

patty, although without the yummy seasonings. Even

the honey badger got distracted, and startedlaughing at the Aaminas shock and pain. Suddenly,

the Pelican started to choke and opened his bill,

allowing a slimy, disoriented Asim to climb out and

    jump into the water.

Sand, he grunted, more effective than you think.

Right at that moment, the nomad troop appeared

    swords ready. They charged.

Perfect timing! Aamina said, as if nothing crazy and

dangerous happened. But the honey badger had no

time for jokes, and he threw his sword at Aamina. Itimpaled her stomach, and she fell to the ground,

gasping. Aasim, ran to her side, yanking the sword

    out of her.

    Dont go.... he moaned.

    Aasim...... she gasped, Im sorry.

But you did nothing wrong! He glanced around at

the men fighting the pelican and honey badger. We

found who was taking the water; the other men will

    stop him!

But... in the story... there was a happy ending.Aamina cried.

Every story has its own variation, and yours,

Aamnia, was the best by far.

She smiled, Youre the greatest friend I could ever

    have.

    And then she passed.

Aasim yelled for her to come back, but her body was

weak in his hands, and there was nothing he could

do. After they had slain the honey badger and the

giant pelican, Aasim took them to where the water

was. The sight of the water was overwhelming for

the thirst stricken nomads. They ran to the water and

drank their fill; they filled their water skins, and their

emergency barrels. Then they took some water

poured it on to their bodies, trying to bathe after so

long without water. When they were finished, the

water was nearly gone. They had been so carelessand wasteful, that there wasnt enough to fill the

rivers and lakes in Saudi Arabia. And they had to

head back through the harsh desert, back to Mecca.

When they reached the kings palace, ten days later,

he was furious. But for some reason deep within the

kings own mind, he didnt think that Aamina did

anything helpful. He claimed the men would have

found the place by themselves, and anyway it was

the men, after all, who killed the evil doers. So,

though they were punished for drinking the water,

they were also rewarded for stopping the honey

    badger and pelican.

Aasim grew up to be a wise and lucky man. He

decided to go to school; he got a good job, a big

house, a wife and three beautiful young girls. All

three girls resembled Aamina in personality and

looks. All his life she didnt leave his mind. He never

forgot the girl who risked everything for the world, and paid dearly for it.
