THE MYSTERY OFPRAYER

BY REV. DR. JONATHANLOVELADY

“I have heard your prayer andhave chosen this place for my-self as a temple for sacrifices. 13 When I shut up the heavensso that there is no rain, orcommand locusts to devourthe land or send a plagueamong my people, 14 if mypeople, who are called by myname, will humble themselvesand pray and seek my face andturn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin andwill heal their land. 15 Now myeyes will be open and my earsa en ve to the prayers offered in this place.” (2Chronicles 7:12-15 NIV)

We are con nuing with

our year of prayer. No ce these verses from 2 Chronicles7. The Lord is speaking to Sol-omon a er the dedica on of the temple. On a na onal and social level these words speak

to us. Events like Pearl Har-bor, September 11, schoolshoo ngs, wildfires, hurri-canes, or other na onal trage-dies should call us to humilityand prayer, as well as reflec- on upon the error of our ways. It should also prompt usto ask God for healing in oursociety and in our world.

However, it is hard to dis-cern this type of healing be-cause it takes me and change in our society to find God’s healing and wholeness. One ofthe great comforts of thisscripture is that it offers us hope, despite the broken fab-ric of our society. God is notunaware or uncaring aboutthe state of social order, in-stead God’s eyes are open andGod’s ears are a en ve to our prayers. Our tempta on with this the verse from 2 Chronicles, is tocreate a vengeful and wrathfilled god whose only goal is to repay the sin that we havedone. LORD, the compassionate and gracious God,slow to anger, abounding in love and faithful-ness, maintaining love to thousands, and for-giving wickedness, rebellion andsin….” (Exodus 34:6-7 NIV). These words arerepeated numerous mes throughout scrip-ture to remind us that God never gives us asour sins deserve, instead God prefers loveover anger, forgiveness rather than recom-pense, and pa ence rather than vengeance. Peter the apostle would sum up God’s charac-ter this way: “The Lord is not slow in keepinghis promise, as some understand slowness.Instead he is pa ent with you, not wan ng anyone to perish, but everyone to come torepentance.” (2 Peter 3:9 NIV). Jesus provesthat God prefers repentance, a turning of ourhearts to God, rather than people being lostsheep. This is one of the major themes of theBible. God wants us to turn to Him and find healing and wholeness.

This also brings us to the mystery of God.Prayers for healing take place rou nely and o en as we go through the course of our lives. The singular most common request of prayeris for healing and wholeness. Herein, lies themystery of divine healing. We are tempted tobelieve when we or someone close to us expe-riences sickness, then we are being punishedfor some sin. Some people may believe theyare not healed because God is extrac ng pay-ment for what they have done, even thoughthey have prayed regularly and fervently. Ihave prayed for people during a wide varietyof visits. In some instances, people recoveredquicker than I expected, or found a strength toendure their circumstances that was amazing. We focus on miraculous healing to the exclu-sion of God’s power being at work in manyother ways. I have come to believe that allprayer offers wholeness and healing for our broken souls. This is why I am encouraging allof us to prac ce daily prayer during 2019, es-pecially if we want to find a greater sense of healing in our lives!

I will never be able to explain why somepeople are healed more completely or quicklythan others. Why one person will be healed ofa disease and another will die. I don’t believeit is because one of the two believed morethan the other. I do not believe one was moredeserving than the other. Nor do I believe that“death” is the ul mate healing! I hear this from me to me, but it is not comfor ng for me, nor is it for many grieving people. Instead,I have to let God be God, the Eternal Onewhose mind and will I cannot fully compre-hend. I have to admit to the mystery thatGod’s thoughts are far higher than mine, orthe thoughts of any mortal being. (Isaiah 55:8-9) This mystery is hard to bear for those whohave struggled with disease or hardship. Yet,this mystery is also what gives the ac on of any prayer and every prayer the great poten- al for us to find the power and grace for our struggle. The Apostle Paul put it this way:Therefore, in order to keep me from becomingconceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. 8 Three mes I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. 9 But he said to me, "My grace issufficient for you, for my power is made per-fect in weakness." Therefore, I will boast allthe more gladly about my weaknesses, so thatChrist's power may rest on me. 10 That is why,for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, ininsults, in hardships, in persecu ons, in diffi-cul es. For when I am weak, then I am strong. (2 Corinthians 12:7-10 NIV). Humility, trust, hope, and ul mately grace is found in the mo-ment of prayer, and God opens the mystery ofHis presence to our hearts amid the hardshipsof our lives. In my first church in North Carolina there were three daughters who cared for their in-firmed mother. They organized their lives to take care of her 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They dearly loved their mother but she wasvery infirmed. She was on a feeding tube. She could not speak, only mo on with her head or eyes in response to their conversa on. I ad-

mired them (as I have others since mee ng them) for the genuinely heroic efforts to care for their mother. The mother began to experience difficulty breathing. Upon examina on in the hospital, a large tumor was discovered on her lungs. Thedoctor was kind but clear; she would not livevery long because it appeared to be in an ad-vanced stage. I visited her shortly a er the doctor had le and the daughters were heart-broken and they asked me to pray for herhealing. I ques oned in my own mind, if this was truly the best prayer, but I was moved toa deep compassion by the love of thesedaughters for their mother. We gatheredaround her bedside and prayed for her heal-ing. During the night her struggle to breathebegan to ease, by the morning she wasbreathing normally, much to the doctor’samazement. He decided that he would do an-other x-ray of her chest. He could find no evi-dence of the tumor and now her symptomswere gone. The doctor could offer no other explana on, other than that it was a miracle! She went home the next day. The motherwould live several more years and pass awaypeacefully.

I was absolutely amazed by this! I think Godwas just as moved to compassion as I was bythe love of these daughters! I also think Godhad the added bonus of being able to show asmart, young, preacher man that I did notknow as much as I thought! I would not fullyunderstand this, but it proved to me that Godis God, there is not another! This is somethingwe can trust during every year that we live!Amen!

NEW BEGINNINGSBY LISA REINHARD

“When a crystal vase slips from the fin-gers and sha ers on a marble floor; when an egg is smashed, its raggedshell fragments sca ered; when the petals of a rose are torn off and bruised, crushed beneath the wind’s weight—there is no fixing it. Not so with human lives. We can go on. With us There arenew beginnings, A crisp white sheet ofpaper On which to write the words oftoday.”From Psalms for the Single MomWri en by Lisa Reinhard (1999 and 2018)

New beginnings. Isn’t that what Je-

sus’s resurrec on is all about? Just when the disciples despaired that theirfriend and leader was gone, havingbeen tortured and killed in a most hide-ous way, and they believe that all is lost, there comes Mary running to themwith the news,” I have seen the Lord!”Imagine the emo ons warring within these men—these men who hadwalked daily with Jesus, had eaten withHim, watched Him perform miracles, prayed with Him, learned from Him. Torealize that not all is lost, to grasp thevery real hope that Jesus lives on, pre-paring a place for them. On the otherhand, to not quite believe it could betrue. How could it? They saw Him takeHis last breath on the cross and surren-der Himself to death. But true it was,and they knew it was Him when Heshowed them His hands and side, whenHe came and stood among them whenthey hid behind locked doors, and whenHe said, “Peace be with you. “(John 20:

19-20) They are described as beingoverjoyed!

David sings of God’s ability to cre-ate new beginnings in Psalm 40 whenhe says, “I waited pa ently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry. Heli ed me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rockand gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn ofpraise to our God.” (verses 1-3)

Indeed, I have seen Him take mydarkest moments and turn them intosomething brand new for me to discov-er and grow from. Just when I’vethought that my life was sha ered be-yond repair, He restores “even the yearsthe locusts ate.” He is nothing if notthorough. He thinks of everything, eve-ry ny detail. He definitely sets my feet on a rock and always, always—in Hisown ming—gives me a firm place to stand.

God is very protec ve of His peo-ple. In Ezekiel 36, He says, “For I willtake you out of the na ons; I will gather you from all the countries and bring youback to your own land. I will sprinkleclean water on you, and you will beclean; I will cleanse you from all yourimpuri es and from all your idols. I will give you a new heart and put a newspirit in you; I will remove your heart ofstone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move youto follow my decrees and be careful tokeep my laws. You will live in the land Igave your forefathers; you will be mypeople and I will be yourGod.” (verses24-28) That was wri en thousands of years ago, but I believe Heis the same God now as He was then.He can s ll give us a new heart and put a new spirit in us!

We are told that when we cometo Christ, we are, in fact, made new.“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is anew crea on; the old has gone, the new has come!” Time and me again, we have witnessed the remarkable changesin people who come to know Him.When they are given the reassurance ofeternity, they change their perspec ves and their values.

Finally, we are told in Revela on, “Behold, I make all things new.” Eversince my amazing husband Jack went toheaven, I have o en pondered what it is really like. He said ALL things, so it mustbe incredible and beyond my compre-hension and the scope of my mind. Ican think and guess all I want, but Iwon’t know what it’s truly like un l I en-ter it. But just the fact that I have alleternity wai ng for me with Jesus and with the newness that heaven promises

gives me an incredible sense of hopeand well-being. Knowing that what Je-sus did for me on that cross by takingon all my sins, makes Easter the mostglorious day of the year for me. I hopeyou feel the newness of it, too.
