V E R Y so often we re-ceive letters from mem-bers expressing theirviews about the doct-rine of reincarnation.A great many newmembers who are more

or less unfamiliar with the real prin-ciples of the doctrine of reincarnation,as presented by AMORC, state thatthey cannot accept the doctrine in itsentirety, and wonder whether this willinterfere with their progress throughthe studies. W e always inform thesemembers that the acceptance of thedoctrine of reincarnation is not vitalin the first year of our studies, andthat we prefer not to have any memberaccept the doctrine purely on faith,or because we refer to it in our teach-ings. In fact, if the doctrine is setaside, it will not cause any delay inthe progress of the student, for it isnot vital to the understanding of thehundreds of other principles in our

teachings, which are easily demon-strable and of practical value. In fact,I personally feel that if none of ourmembers accept the doctrine of rein-carnation until they become convincedof it eventually, it would make littledifference so far as their progressthrough the grades is concerned, andtheir practical application of the manyother principles.

Reincarnation is a law which is selfevident to the highly developed mysticand to the person who becomes at-

tuned with other mystic laws andprinciples, and for this reason it issafe to recommend to our new mem-bers that if they have no convictionin regard to reincarnation, that theybe not concerned about it nor acceptit on faith, but wait for the time tocome when they will become convincedone way or another about it, and inthe meantime set it aside as some-thing unimportant until it becomes of

vital interest. As I have intimatedabove, it is fortunate that this greatlaw of reincarnation does eventuallybecome self evident, and through cer-tain experiences which every developedmystic is sure to have, the doctrine ofreincarnation becomes a conviction,rather than a principle of faith. It isfor this reason that the doctrine hasbecome acceptable and understandableto millions of persons throughout theworld in all ages.

I can understand, however, why agreat many hesitate to accept the doc-trine, as it is generally presented.There certainly has been more mis-conception or misrepresentation aboutreincarnation in popular books andpopular writings than about almostany other mystical law. There are twoexplanations for this. In the firstplace, some Oriental nations or sec-tions of nations given to idolatry orheathen forms of worship have builtup a false doctrine of reincarnationbuilt upon the ancient principles trans-mitted to them by tradition, withoutany serious thought or scientific inves-tigation. For instance, we often findin foreign popular literature, referencesto the transmigration of souls, and tothe belief that the soul of man may beborn again in a lower animal such asa cat or a dog or some sacred beastof some country, or in the body of awild and undeveloped tribesman. Somebeliefs and ideas are far from the trueprinciples of reincarnation, and are re-sponsible for the ridicule that has beenbrought to this great law. W e are notsurprised, however, at such supersti-tions or heathenish ideas in the worldtoday. When one stops to think thatthe beautiful teachings of Buddha havebecome perverted in the very Orientallands where the true teachings ofBuddha were established hundreds ofyears ago, and are still known to theenlightened ones, and that several mil-lion persons are practising a form of

Buddhism today which consists ofbuilding great images of grotesque ap-pearance supposed to represent Bud-dha, to which the peoples go or sendtheir hired priestly representatives tomerely burn incense and bow in ig-norant worship; then we can under-stand how knowledge may becomemisinterpreted, and great facts misun-derstood and an erroneous understand-ing built up in substitution of the cor-rect one. Another reason for the mis-understanding of reincarnation is thefact that the popular books that havetreated upon this subject in the Oc-cidental world have been written bypersons unacquainted with the realprinciples, and generally intended toserve as light reading without the in-tention to have the knowledge serveany practical purpose. Such books havebrought criticism and ridicule fromclergymen, scientists, and thinking per-sons, with the result that until recentyears, one never spoke of the subjectof reincarnation in public withoutapologetically explaining that it wasmerely an ancient belief which wasindifferently accepted at the presenttime.

On the other hand, there are oneor two other reasons for the general

hesitation in accepting the doctrine ofreincarnation by those who are wellversed in Occidental religions andscientific knowledge. First of all, wehave the school of spiritualists, whohave succeeded in building up theirtheories and misconceptions in the Oc-cidental world to a degree unknownand unaccepted in the Oriental world.According to these theories and prin-ciples, man continues to live for in-definite eons of time in the spiritualworld after transition, retaining the same identity, tendencies, weaknesses,habits, and idiosyncrasies. The accept-ance of such a belief would naturallypreclude the acceptance of the doctrineof reincarnation. And since the spirit-ualists claim that their seance demon-strations, spirit messages, tambourineand trumpet manifestations, slate wri-ting, photograph productions and otherweird performances prove their theo-ries, they have succeeded in convincinga host of persons into believing that

their theories are correct. On the otherhand, the strictly orthodox personsof the various Christian denominationsseem to believe that the doctrine ofimmortality as presented in the church-es, and seemingly verified by state-ments in the Bible, also preclude thepossibility of rebirth on earth.

The fact of the matter is that thespiritualists have not succeeded in anyway in proving that if communicationbetween this earth plane and the spiritworld is possible, and that those whohave departed from this plane cancommunicate with those who are stillhere, the doctrine of reincarnation isnot true. There is not necessarily anyinconsistency between their theoriesand the doctrine of reincarnation, inso far as the theories which they areable to demonstrate under test con-ditions are concerned. Of course if weaccept the very questionable demon-strations which occur in some seances,whereby the so called medium can in-stantly, and without other reason thana mercenary or idle motive, call toearth from the spirit plane the spiritform of Columbus or Socrates, Ben-

jamin Franklin or any other personwho has passed from this earth planeat any time in its period of history,

then we would have to admit thatthe doctrine of reincarnation is incon-sistent with the spiritualistic preten-sions. But the fact remains that all ofthe demonstrations made under abso-lutely test conditions, by the mosteminent scientists, tend to show thatthese sort of demonstrations are notacceptable, and are even unworthy ofscientific consideration. It is a notablefact that under scientific conditions thecommunications received and tentative-ly accepted by the scientists as worthyof further investigation, come fromthose persons who have been on theso called spirit plane but a short time,and it seems to be almost impossible,if not precisely so, to get into com-munication with the so called spiritof a person who passed from this earthplane many years ago.

However, we are not discussing thespiritualistic doctrines at the presenttime, but the doctrine of reincarnation.As for the orthodox teachings of

Christianity, there are none set forthin the Bible which completely andconvincingly preclude the acceptanceof the doctrine of reincarnation; whileon the other hand, there are manyreferences, even by Jesus and his Dis-ciples, which are understandable onlyfrom the basis of the actuality of rein-carnation.

A N I N T E R E S T I N G L E T T E R

Typical of some of the letters re-ceived from our members is the fol-lowing, and I think that our memberswill be glad to read this letter and noteour answer thereto. The letter says:

“You did not answer all of myquestions. Two I would like particular-ly answered . Are there any people onearth who have lived a very long timewithout transition, like Zanoni? I donot reject the doctrine of reincarnation,but it seems dreadful to me to be bornagain and go through babyhood andthe long years of school; to have todo it over and over seems quite theworst punishment any devil could con-ceive, much less a just God. Andthen to die so many times, it is aw-ful! Death is a dreadful thing! It shouldbe abolished, but how? Not to knowwhere we go after death, or whereour loved ones are; why the mystery?It was in the hope of finding thesethings out that I joined the A M O RC .”

W e must admit that this letter isunique in some of its statements, whenwe consider that it is from a personeducated, cultured, and interested inmystical subjects. It is perhaps the firsttime in many years that any of ourhundreds of thousands of letters com-ing from such a person has expressedthe idea that death is a dreadful thing,and that to die a number of times is

awful. But we will answer the questionin this letter, and comment on theother statements, as follows:

First of all, wherein is the doctrineof reincarnation, with its transition,period of rest on the spirit plane, andplane rebirth again on earth, more

short all usefulness and opportunities,and bringing in its wake an endless,eternal period of unconscious exist-ence awaiting a final judgment daywith the inevitable weighing of ourweaknesses and faults and the conse-quences which follow?The Sister who wrote the fore-going letter refers to the terriblethought of going to where we do notknow our loved ones after death. Isthere anything in the orthodox doc-trines which relieves this anxiety, orconvincingly shows that after transi-tion we are conscious of our lovedones or even conscious of ourselvesuntil the far distant judgment day?Spiritualism attempts to relieve thisanxiety, but we cannot include the

doctrines of spiritualism in the ortho-dox category. And why should trans-ition be called a terrible thing? Iknow of thousands of persons todaywho have absolutely no fear of trans-ition nor of the future state. Untilone removes from one’s consciousnessall fear of death or transition, onedoes not truly live or understand thebeauties of life. But to one who doesfear death or transition, there is nodoctrine known to us either in theorthodox principles of Christianity, inspiritualism, or in the Oriental reli-gions which will afford comfort andpeace in this regard. If we believe orknow that transition is inevitable, andthat so called death of the body isone of the surest things, then mostcertainly the doctrine of reincarnationbecomes the most acceptable, and mostcomforting, of all of the explanationsof the law of immortality. But if onebelieves that transition is not inevit-able, and that it is a result of violationof natural laws on our part and is apunishment for our misunderstandingof how to live, then not only does thedoctrine of reincarnation become afalse, terrifying idea, but all of theorthodox principles explaining the im-mortality of man and his inevitableentrance into the spiritual world be-come likewise intolerable and discon-certing.

OLD AGE ON EARTHThis brings us at once to the other

The Sister wants to know whetherthere are any people on earth whohave lived a very long time withouttransition. A similar question is foundin hundreds of letters received by us

from persons who have read popularstories in mystical literature about emi-nent mystical characters who havelived almost endlessly, or eternally orfor hundreds of years in one bodywithout transition. In fact, this ideaseems to be a popular understandingon the part of several hundred thou-sand persons in the Oriental world.W e must admit that some teachersand some writers, some lecturers andsome promulgators of elixirs and pri-vate courses of instruction have fos-tered this idea in order to aid themin their selfish motives. But we wishto call attention to this one outstandingfact: No one rises to present to usthe living body of a person who haslived continuously in one body with-out transition for over 144 years. W esay 144 years, and we might safelysay 140 years. For fifteen years wehave carefully searched every recordsubmitted to us by persons in our or-ganization and outside of it, livingin the Occidental and Oriental worlds,

and we have written to all of ourforeign branches, have asked certainBureaus of Statistics and ScientificBureaus; we have written to institutessuch as the Smithsonian Institute, the John Hopkins Hospital, and institutesin Europe and the Orient, and wehave gone through ancient and modernrecords, encyclopedias, and books ofqueer facts, still we have not hadpresented to us any positive infor-mation showing, beyond any doubt,that any person is known to havelived in one body more than 144years.

Now we know that there are ref-erences in the present versions of theChristian Bible to persons who livedhundreds of years, and we know thatthere are references in sacred writingsof the Orient to persons who lived inthe same body for hundreds of years.But none of the most learned of theinterpreters and authorities of Chris-

tian or sacred literature are willing tosay over their signature that they be-lieve that the years referred to in suchaccounts are similar to the years thatwe understand according to our pres-

ent calendar. And we know also thatthe Egyptians and many other Orien-tal nations were given to exaggeratedstatements in regard to old age, notfor the purpose of wilfully deceivingbut merely to emphasize the fact thatsome persons lived for an unusuallylong period. If one of their ancientslived for 130 years, it was consideredso miraculous that in the traditionalstories passed from one generation toanother by word of mouth, it wasstated that the character lived to behundreds of years old, or perhaps athousand years old. None of the ex-cavations made in Egypt or in otherlands where mummies have been found,or where the remains of bodies havebeen found in marked tombs, or withother signs to distinguish them, re-veal any of the bodies of persons wholived any unusual length of time.

W e also have the records of mys-tical writers who refer to the greatMasters of Thibet or the Far Eastwho are living today, and yet wereborn in the same body several hun-dred, or possibly a thousand yearsago. These statements are based upona misunderstanding, as can be verifiedby our own records from our branchesin the Orient, and from the archivesof the G. T. in Thibet.

Such Masters as are referred to inthese writings are still living and wereliving many hundreds of years ago.But, they are not living today in thesame body which they occupied intheir early activities in the eighth,ninth, tenth or eleventh centuries. Each

of them passed through a number oftransitions and have been re bornagain, but because of their high devel-opment, they have retained the samepersonality and are known to be thesame person. It is the misunderstand-ing of this that has led popular writersof mystical literature to think thatthese persons have lived without trans-ition.

Again we say, as we have saidmany times when conducting investi

gations on this subject, that we chal-lenge any one to prove to us withdocuments that are indisputable thatany person living today was bornmore than 144 years ago accordingto our present calendar. If those per-sons who believe that there are menand women living today who are morethan 144 years old, and are ready to ar-gue this point with us will first attemptto get the actual proof of their state-ments before insisting that we changeour statements in this regard, they willsoon find that the writers of the books,and the lecturers presenting suchclaims hesitate to bring forth the in-disputable evidence and g e n e r a l l yevade the issue.

R E M E M B E R I N G P R E V I O U SLIVES

One of the arguments often pre-sented by some of our members againstthe doctrine of reincarnation is this:Since I have such a good memory,why is it that I cannot remember eventhe least bit about my past incarna-tions? In other words, the tendencyon the part of these persons is to feelthat because they have no distinctremembrance of any events in the past,they cannot believe that they everlived before. The trouble with such a

form of reasoning is this: Such personsforget that in any past life lived onthis earth they had a different individ-uality, with a different name, belong-ing to a different nation, with differenttong ue, and different environment.Such a person, for instance, may be John Jones, a physician, in the presentincarnation. He wonders why he can-not recall himself as John Jones withsimilar scientific knowledge, under-standing, and comprehension, living insome other country, at some othertime. He may occasionally have flashesof consciousness of a character dif-ferent than himself, and may at timesfeel a certain familiarity with the lifeof soldiers, or the life of a farmer,or the life of a carpenter, or some-thing of that kind, but he does notassociate such characters with himself.Secondly, such persons forget that re-gardless or how good their presentmemory may be, they cannot recallthe incidents of the early part of their

childhood, except so vaguely that theyare not even sure of them. How manyof you who read this page can remem-ber what occurred in your first andsecond years of life in this present in-carnation? Can you remember your-self as a little boy or girl in the crib?Can you remember yourself beingbathed as an infant by your mother?Can you remember the first steps youtook in trying to walk? Can you re-member the rooms in which you spentyour infant days or the days of yourearly childhood? Some of you willrecall some outstanding event of yourlife which occurred in the second,third or fourth year, but if you anal-yze it, you will see at once that youremember it so vaguely and in such

a way that it seems to be an incidentwhich you witnessed, and apart fromyourself. If our memory of events inthis incarnation is so vague, then whythink it strange that our memory ofevents in a life several hundred yearsago is also vague? Granting that theaverage member who reads this pageis now about forty years of age, wewould say that such average memberpassed away from this earth planein transition when they were sixtyyears of age in the last incarnation.This would mean that in the averagecase the transition occurred in 1804,and that in trying to remember inci-dents of the past life, the averagemember would have to go back tothe years 1744 to 1804. Certainly thatis a long time ago, and whether theperson lived in this country or inother countries, the thoughts of thepeople, the conditions of living, andthe general mental development weresuch that the character of that timewould be much unlike any characterof the present time. And the person-

alities would be so dissimilar that itwould be difficult for a person livingtoday to recollect events of that time,and feel that they were associated withthe present personality.

But there are thousands of instanceswhere persons do recall events of thepast life. I think that in our recordswe have the statements of severalthousand Americans, who have grad-ually become conscious of events in

their past lives through the awakeningof their dormant memories, or theawakening of dormant chapters in thememory records. As we have saidabove, there generally comes a time toevery well developed mystic, or toevery student of mysticism who bideshis time and who gradually awakensthe dormant inner self, when the docrtine of reincarnation becomes a con-viction through various occurences,and generally these occurences arethe result of the awakened memory.

And then there are many eminentincidents, on record, of children whohave suddenly proved to be familiarwith a past life. W e do not have timeor space in this magazine to presentthe great many recorded instances ofsuch manifestations. A child of twoor three years of age is very apt tobe more familiar with the past inci-dents of a previous incarnation thanan adult of thirty or forty years,whose present memory has becomecharged with more recent and moreimportant facts. This accounts for themany peculiar statements and tenden-cies on the part of children, and italso explains the child's strong likesand dislikes which often have to beovercome in order that he may blendmore completely with present environ-ment, family associations and condi-tions.

There is, for instance, the one inci-dent of the three year old child whowas to have an operation in a Cana-dian hospital. For several weeks, spe-cialists were undecided whether theoperation, which was of a very criti-cal nature, should be performed ornot. And it was generally held thatthe operation was unnecessary andmerely experimental, and the parentsprotested as well as many relatives.

During one of the clinical examinationsof the child, for the purpose of deter-mining whether an operation shouldbe performed or not, the child wasgreatly annoyed by certain tests of anaggravating nature. Suddenly, the littlechild in a burst of violent pass ion protested against any further exami-nation, by crying out in a languageforeign to its birth and country, andclaiming that it was not an infant,

but had lived previously in a city asa certain character, and it had certainexperiences and certain knowledge, andknew certain persons who would veri-fy the statements made. Verificationof every statement made by the childshowed that it had lived where itsaid, had passed on through transitionat the time it stated, and was un-questionably the reincarnation of theformer character. It is interesting tonote that after this fit of passionate

pro test and ex plan at ion had beenmade, the child was not able to againspeak the language it had used in thisprotest, and could recall no other inci-dents of the past life. Something in thestressed circumstances, and the suffer-ing she was passing through in the

clinic, awakened the closed chaptersof her memory momentarily. Otherincidents of a similar nature have beenrecorded or reported from many partsof the world, and in most cases, whenthe closed chapters of the memory wereawakened through some developmentor strenuous condition, they have re-mained open and accessible, and haverevealed many interesting facts of thepast life.

A N I N T E R E S T I N G T E S T I M O N Y

Perhaps the most interesting, andcertainly the most recent of these in-cidents is one that is now being pub-lished in all the newspapers of theworld, and featured in many specialarticles. The account we have wassent direct to us from a newspaperpublished in foreign lands, and is theoriginal report given in a recent issueof the “Times”, in India. A little girlknown as Ramkali, the daughter ofPandit Ganga Vishnu, a Brahman,living in the little village of Shadinangar, suddenly claimed that she could

recall some incidents of a previous life. When only three years of age,she had told her father of an earlierlife, but was very indefinite about themany important points. As time passed,she became more conscious of the in-cidents of the past, and finally statedthat she recalled having lived in avillage named Maglebagh. She saidthat she recalled having had threesons, and that one of them had been 3

born just before her transition. Shesaid that the oldest one was namedSiyaram, and the second one Ramswaroop, and that the third one hadnot been named at the time of hertransition. She insisted upon wanting

to go to the city where she had closedher life, to visit her three sons whowere still living. So insistent did shebecome in this regard, and so clear inher statements to scientists and otherswho listened to her story, that event-ually the father, accompanied by sev-eral specialists, took the daughter andhis wife on a bullock cart to thelittle village of Maglabagh in a sec-tion of India where he and his wifehad never visited and knew no one.While approaching the village, thechild began to point out familiar scenesand described houses and places thatthey would pass or reach at certainpoints. She finally pointed out twohouses in the distance in which shesaid she had lived during her previouslife. They approached the one in whichshe said she had lived last, and thechild walked up to two men who wereinside the home and immediately rec-ognized them as her sons, althoughthey were now considerably older. Thegirl proceeded then to describe altera-tions and repairs that had been made

in the house many years before, andanswered questions put to her by thevillagers in regard to incidents in thelife of the people there, and finallydescribed her own relationship andassociations with many still livingthere; then proceeded to describe thehiding place of things in the homewhere she had put many of her per-sonal belongings shortly before hertransition. The sons living in the homeverified all her statements regardingher illness and her transition, the birthof the youngest son, the names sheused, and the many intimate mattersthat had occurred in their home lifebefore their young mother had passed

on. The account is verified by an emi-nent scientist named Ahmed Mirza, agraduate physician and a Bachelorof Sciences holding a degree in Edin-burgh University and by many otherswho have investigated the case very

carefully.If we admit, as the scientists havewho have investigated this story, thatthis little girl most certainly lived oncebefore, in the time and place and underthe circumstances she describes, thenwe have one case of reincarnation.And if we have but one case provedin any part of the world or in anypart of the universe, we have the lawor doctrine of reincarnation estab-lished. For we cannot conceive of ex-ceptional cases, or only one case outof a million, or a mere unique eventin the laws of this scheme of life.And as I intimated, this case is butone of a great many called to ourattention by members, scientists, phy-sicians, and by investigators, not onlyin this country but in many countries.And it takes more than mere argu-ment to believe, or the skepticism of adoubting Thomas, to set such reportsaside and make any sane or sensibleperson believe that they prove nothingand mean nothing.

But as we have said above, whether

the doctrine of reincarnation is ac-ceptable to you or not is immaterialso far as the other work and prin-ciples of the AMORC are concerned.Until you can become convinced of thedoctrine itself, through your own ex-periences and your own knowledge,you may accept it or reject it, and findin the other principles and teachingsof the organization sufficient to enableyou to live a better, more happy, andmore profitable life. HERE is one experience inmy life which I will neverforget, and although I havewritten of it before, I knowthat there are so many new __ members in our Order who

have not heard the story that it willbear repeating at this time.

The experience occurred in 1917,while the National Headquarters ofthe Order were located in a buildingoccupied exclusively by the Order in

West 48th Street, New York City. Onthe second floor of this building werelocated the reception room and generalexecutive offices, and in the rear ofthat floor, in an extension to the build-ing, was located the Supreme Lodge.On the upper floors of the buildingwere the editorial rooms, the printingplant, secretarial offices, a lunch room,and some rest rooms.

One Saturday morning at abouteleven o'clock, there came into the re-ception room of this place a man offoreign appearance, and with veryforeign appearance, and with very oldand very worn foreign clothes. Heseemed to be about forty five years ofage, robust with the health of a foreignpeasant, fresh from the fields of agri-culture, or from the mountains or val-leys of rural districts. There was akindly smile in his eyes, and his lipsspoke hesitatingly as he asked: “Isthis the office of the Rosicrucian Or-der?” There was a foreign accent tohis speech, and his mannerisms thoseof an educated or cultured person,despite his clothes. At first appearance,and without hearing him speak, I amsure that our office boy would havedecided that he was either a peddler oran emigrant who was seeking his wayabout the city, and I feel certain thathe would have given the slight atten-tion which office boys usually give topersons of this class.

I happened to be passing throughthe reception room at the time, and so

it was to me he addressed his ques-tion. I invited him to come over to acorner of the room and be seated, andbefore I could ask any further ques-tions he proceeded to say:

‘I am a foreigner in your city, astranger in your land, if you please.Having heard of your Lodge here, Icame to you to ask a favor, Forgiveme if I am intruding, but on Mondaymorning I will begin some work inyour city and until that time I must

take care of myself in some way. I am totally without funds, and I ask theprivilege of doing some menial workso that I may earn enough to have afew meals and a place to sleep untilMonday morning.”

I asked him a few questions abouthimself, and when I asked for hisbirthdate he significantly stated thathe even knew the hour of birth, andthat it was eleven a. m. I made a nota-tion of the birth data with the inten-tion of making a hasty horoscope

during my rest hours on Sunday, andperhaps finding something about himthat would help me in giving him use-ful information before he started towork on Monday.

I offered to permit him to sleep inone of the rest rooms on the premises,and naturally offered to have him par-take of a meal with us. He insisted,however, that he be permitted to earnwhatever food or shelter we gave him,and stated that he would prefer toclean, scrub, sweep or dust. He saidthat he had had no breakfast, and al-though it was approaching noon timehe said he would not think of eatinganything until he had first given someservice in exchange.

I realized, of course, that the man'smotives were prompted by a beau-tiful spirit, and since it was Saturday,and the offices would be closed for theafternoon, I suggested that he could do

self went to the Temple to see what hehad done, and we were surprised atthe thoroughness of his work, in soshort a time. Realizing that we were notready to leave the office, he asked ifhe could go upstairs and have a drinkof water. W e allowed him to go, andalthough he was absent from us for fif-teen or twenty minutes, we thought no-thing of it, and when he returned tothe office we told him that we thoughthe had done sufficient work for the littlehelp that we were able to give him inthe form of meals and shelter.

W e were surprised then to find thathe was preparing to leave the placerather than stay, as we anticipated hewould do. W e thought that he and thecaretaker would spend the afternoon,evening, and all day Sunday, together,but instead he was now preparing toleave. He extended his hand to saygoodbye to us. I approached him withmy hand extended. He made a court-eous bow and instantly our two handswere clasped, and at once I discoveredthat he was giving me the grip of ahigh officer of the Rosicrucian Order.Astounded, I called to the SupremeSecretary. The Secretary approachedand the stranger said: "Brother Secre-tary, I am very glad to have met you."

He also gave the Secretary the samesign and grip which he had given tome. It was the grip of the Illuminati. Asthe stranger stood in the doorway, heturned again and with the bow that oneoften sees made by foreigners, raisedhis hat and said: ‘‘I am happy, Sirs, tohave had the pleasure on my first visitto your Temple to cleanse the Lodgeand give the service I have given."Then he made a sign with his righthand which is made in Europe by offi-

cers when walking backward out of theTemple. It is a sign of blessing, and inanother moment he was gone.

W hat a lesson in humility and ingreatness! For weeks the story was ofintense interest to all the members ofthe Lodge in New York. And then oneday from New Orleans came a letter.It was from the stranger, and it statedhis whole history. He was truly the sonof a great banker who had severalbranches in America, including one inNew Orleans. But he was more than abanker's son. He was one of the highestofficers of the Order in France andEgypt, and a member of the HighCouncil of the Order in Switzerland.He had purposely changed his clothesin New York and given himself the ap-

pearance of a poor peasant so that hemight call on us in disguise and offerhis services, and in this way introducehimself first with humility, and then al-low us to discover the real self in otherways. In later months, letters came fromhim after he returned to Europe, andhis contact with our organization hasbeen one of the beautiful experiencesof our life.

How many of our members hopingto visit the Lodge of the Order in oneof the foreign lands would be willing toenter one of them in such humility, ask-ing for the privilege to serve in a menialcapacity in order to become acquaintedwith the real spirit of the persons con-nected with the Lodge? And yet, thisgreat Master proved to himself, andproved to others, that the spirit of theRosicrucian ideal is kept active in thiscountry as it is in foreign lands. Forat the end of his letter to us he quotedthis significant phrase: "I was a stran-ger and you took me in and gave mebread!"

ANY of our members are in-tensely interested in know-ing how they can apply ourprinciples and parts of ourlessons to the guidance ofchildren, and a great many

are constantly asking how they mayuse the Rosicrucian knowledge to as-sure greater success and happiness inthe future lives of those children whoare under their protection and instruc-tion.

W e all realize that the real educa-tion and training of a child must be-gin in its youth. The question arises,however, as to at what age such in-struction or guidance should be given,and how. When it is possible for theprospective mother to begin a courseof cultural training and preparation forher child before birth, the most won-derful foundation is laid and certainresults are assured. W e have all heardmuch about prenatal influence, and weknow that the ancient Greeks devel-oped this system to a fine art; but weare not all aware of the fact that itis possible for prospective mothers to-day to do more for their children priorto birth, in many regards, than they canfor them after birth. On the other hand,much wonderful work can be done inmoulding the character and developingthe talents and good qualities of a childafter birth, and before it is twelve yearsof age. In fact, there seems to be twovery definite periods in the cycle of achild’s life when it is most easily influ-enced along certain lines. W e may di-vide the possibilities into two groupsand say that there are certain charac-teristics, attributes, and principles ofcharacter which can be instilled in the

7 7 ,c life of a child during the last five or six M ys tic months before birth; and there are otherTriangle characteristics and attributes, as well asSept. tendencies and habits, which may be1928 corrected or established in the life of a

child during its fourth to twelfth year.Whatever is successfully accomplishedduring these two periods will remainwith the child throughout its life, andit is important to note that the greatestgood can be done for children in thisregard before they start going toschool. Th e average child does not startin kindergarten or primary school beforefive or six years of age, and the childthat once comes into contact with a newworld, with not only new but many

counteracting influences, proceeds fromthe very first day of its school life toacquire new habits, ideas and tenden-cies, many of which are very subtle andnever reveal themselves in their truenature, or in their firm establishment,until some unusual experience bringsthese things before the parents, andthen it is often very difficult to changethem or eliminate them.

Parents are therefore confrontedwith the problem of depending uponthe general tendencies born in a childto protect it against the influx of un-

desirable characteristics which it mayacquire during the school or play hours,or else start some system of culturaltraining just before the school life be-gins, and continuing throughout theearly years of school life, to counteractthe unseen, unknown and undesirableinfluences during the hours when thechild is away from the home life.

For many years, the idea that thereis any efficiency in a system of prenatalinfluence has been scoffed at, and madeto appear ridiculous by not only a greatmany in the medical profession, but byeducators, and most important of all,by many of the magazines going intothe homes, which are devoted to theinterests of women and the home life.The result has been that prenatalismhas been called a system of foolish su-perstitions relating to physical defectstransferred to the body of the child bythe mother’s frights and worries, or as

a shallow practice of the ancients nolonger worthy of consideration. Th efact of the matter is. however, that thereal art of prenatalism is hardly under-stood by modern educators, and most

certainly greatly misunderstood bymodern scientists. It is interesting toknow that hundreds of mothers todayhave successfully practised the true artof prenatalism with astonishing results,and that it is possible for the prospec-tive mother to attract or instil certainmental, physical and spiritual qualitiesin her child. And hundreds of motherstoday are following a special systemof instruction for the proper culturaltraining of their children at home, andthereby fortifying their children againstthe temptations and influences of the

world.Some months ago we announced thatafter many years of preparation andstudy of the problems involved, wewere ready to introduce to our membersan organization fully equipped to aidthem in this great work. W e announcedthe establishment of the Child CultureInstitute, with complete courses of in-struction for prospective mothers, andcourses of instruction and guidance forparents of children between the ages offour and twelve. The response was farbeyond our expectation so far as en-thusiastic endorsement of the planswas concerned, and the hundreds ofinquiries received at the Institute fromour members resulted in hundreds ofmembers beginning at once the twocourses issued by the Institute.

I have before me two of a great manyletters received in our correspondenceweekly, from those who are taking thecourses from the Child Culture Insti-tute. The first letter is from a Sister inSan Juan, Porto Rico, and it is reallya letter addressed to the Editor of the

“Forum” of this magazine. It says:“As no one else has gone into printin the ‘Mystic Triang le’ expressingthanks for your recent announcementabout the Child Culture Institute, Ishould like to offer mine. As a motherof three children, I have greatly longedfor just such knowldge and instruction,and had even written to the Imperatorasking if he knew of any place wheresuch information could be obtained.

Now I am following the course ofinstruction called Course A, from theChild Culture Institute, and it is work-ing beautifully with my two oldestgirls. I am truly amazed at the re-sponse they give, and it is so simpleto reach them when the directionsare followed. It is truly a great workand a great blessing to both parentsand children.”

Then, here is a letter from a Sisterin Chicago, Illinois, who is takingCourse B for prospective mothers. Shesays:

“Everything is going along lovelyand I am happy to report I am feeling just fine. The lectures are receivedregularly, and I look forward to them,for the system is really wonderfuland it is a shame that other mothersto be cannot have this wonderfulcourse. It is a shame some peopleare so narrow minded that they willnot take the time to investigate, be-cause if they could read and visual-ize all that I have received, and knowhow wonderfully happy it makes themonths of waiting, it seems thatevery mother to be would do her bestto have this course. I am oh, so happyand contented. Every week the lecturesbecome more and more interesting.”

In some of the letters received, wefind such extracts as this: “My littleboy is six years old, and for the pastyear and a half has greatly worriedme and caused me an endless amountof trouble by the bad habit of runningout of the yard during the day whileI am busy, and disappearing for manyhours; causing me to stop my workand dress, and go out and hunt forhim. Day after day he promised notto go away without letting me know,and then when some boys or girlscame along, he would go off withthem and forget his promise. Manyaccidents have happened in our neigh-borhood to children who have triedto play out in the streets and wereinjured by automobiles or trucks. Andso you may imagine that my life wasnot very happy in this one regard.When I started with the Course A ofinstruction, I was happy to have thetwo lessons on the correction of habits,and I tried this unique system of yours

in connection with this habit of mylittle boy, and I am glad to say thatafter the third day he started comingto me asking if he could go out ofthe yard a few minutes, and promisingnot to cross the street and to return

promptly in accordance with his prom-ise. For three weeks now he has kepthis promise every day, and gives meno more worry about running out ofthe yard. O f course he does not knowthat I have corrected his habit, for Iuse the system just as you present itand reach his subjective mind in amanner that does not arouse the an-tipathy or the suspicion of his objec-tive mind. And so you have one happymother just starting in on the coursewho is ready to say that if the Insti-tute never does anything more for

her than it has, it is worthy of all thesupport I can give it."Other mothers have written about

other habits that have been correctedin their children in a very few days.One mother, particularly, wrote on thebad habit her little girl had in takingmoney from her purse at every oppor-tunity, in order to spend it with otherchildren in the neighborhood. Themother says that now the little girlcomes to her and asks for money,and never thinks of taking any fromeither the purse or any other place

in the home where she may see somechange lying, as on the table or dress-er.

I could go on and cite a great manyinstances of remarkable results alreadyattained by parents, even though thecourse of lessons started only a fewmonths ago.

Another part of the work that hasbeen greatly appreciated and stronglyendorsed is the very careful analysisof the character of the child, that issent to each parent. These analysespoint out the strong and weak ten-

dencies, habits, characteristics andabilities of the child. Some parentswere happy to discover that theirchildren had certain abilities unsus-

pected, and, as a result, in one or twocases parents have started their child-ren with music lessons, and the musicteachers have pronounced them as be-ing unusually apt pupils. In these casesthe parents did not suspect that the

child had this ability, and the Instituteis responsible for having started thechildren in careers that will be emi-nently successful and a great joy tothe parents.

The Child Culture Institute workson the most economical basis that anyinstitute can operate upon, consider-ing the vast amount of work it isdoing and the wonderful informationthat is prepared for each parent. Itsliterature is intensely interesting, andwe invite every one of our memberswho are guardians of children, if not

parents, to write to the Child CultureInstitute and ask for literature re-garding their two courses of instruc-tion. Prospective mothers will also findthe special course for them the mostimportant system of guidance in re-gard to their own health, the creatingof a beautiful character, and the as-surance of peace and happiness whenthe critical hour comes. When writingto the Child Culture Institute, pleasemention that you read about this mat-ter in the "Mystic Triangle”, for thatwill guide them in sending you a

special booklet.All of our members can help inthis great work by keeping in mindthat whenever they have an oppor-tunity to talk with parents of childrenthey should tell them about this Insti-tute and its courses of instruction; andour Sisters will confer a great favorupon prospective mothers by tellingthem about the Institutes specialcourse for them. Some Explanations and Some Ques-tions for you to Ponder Over.

Dealing with human nature, in anyway or through any system, revealsthat human nature is much the samethroughout the world in all classifica-tions, regardless of all attempts to se-gregate humans into certain bodies orgroups according to their mental, spir-itual, or brotherhood tendencies.

I am constantly reminded of thisby the peculiar quirks I find in thecorrespondence from our members inregard to their communications withmy department, and I think that alittle chat with all of you at the presenttime will help to make plain manythings that a great many of youmisunderstand.

One of the tendencies of humannature, referred to above, is to resentany intimation that one is delinquentin his duties or neglectful of his obli-gations. W e all have this trait, and asI have said, it makes no difference howwe may be classified in regard to our

other mental traits or tendencies, thisfundamental trait asserts itself veryoften. Two of us may be closely re-lated. as very dear friends, and yetone of us may resent any intimationon the part of the other that we haveneglected some obligation. The factthat all of us are members of theAMORC brotherhood, and thereforeclassified as Brothers and Sisters inone big family with a spirit of coopera-tion, tolerance and love filling ourvery beings, seems to make no differ-ence in regard to this fundamentaltrait which makes us resent any sug-gestions that we have been neglectful.In every department of AMORC atHeadquarters, the utmost tolerance,lenience and kindness is maintained.The spirit of brotherhood permeatesevery department and is insistently in-stilled in the consciousness of everyemployee, every clerk, and everyonewho has anything to do with theorganization, its business activities, the

upkeep of its systems, or even themaintenance of the buildings them-selves.

On the other hand, a great manyof our members seem to forget thatin so large an organization as oursthere are systems in operation whichare practically automatic, and whichare not subject to the whims andfancies, personal ideas and beliefs ofany particular clerk or group of em-ployees. For instance, in our mailingdepartment the clerks who operatethe large electrical machines, whichseal envelopes and print the postageon them, work as automatic beingsconnected with the machinery theyoperate. Late each afternoon, theseclerks start feeding the thousands ofenvelopes into these machines, and inorder to have the many bags of mailfilled and ready to go on the truckat 5:30, they are forced, in the lasthour of the day, to handle the thou-

sands of pieces of mail so rapidlythat individual attention to each en-velope is not only impossible so faras time is concerned, but impossibleso far as individual selection is con-cerned. And yet there are memberswho ask why it is not possible thatthe mail clerks separate their partic-ular envelope from the mail at nightand put their lecture in a plain en-velope, so that somebody at the re-ceiving end will not know where theletter is coming from. In the firstplace, even if there was no Post

Office law which necessitated thatevery one of our envelopes must bearan imprint, there certainly would beno opportunity for our mail clerks togo through three or four thousand en-velopes in one hour, or eight or tenthousand envelopes in one afternoon,and look for some particular name andthen change the envelope to a plainone. Just one such request to be ful-filled would upset the entire mailing

for several hours, and would probablyresult in the great mass of lecturesmissing the evening train and leavingthis city a day later. As the lettersgo through the mailing machines at therate of several thousand an hour, noneof the clerks have any knowledge ofthe persons to whom the envelopes areaddressed, are not interested in thepersonality of the recipient, and knownothing about that person's standingin the organization, or otherwise. Tothese clerks an envelope is an envelope, just as to the machine the envelopesall look alike. That is what we meanby an automatic system, and it isthe only kind of a system that makesfor efficiency and absolute accuracy.The moment we have to depend uponthe ability to discriminate, the powerto select, and the understanding to

judge on the part of the employees,then we begin to weaken our system.Clerical employees are not hired toexercise any judgment of a discrim-inating nature so far as their routinesystem of work is concerned. Thehuman equation enters too greatly,and with too much importance, intothe entire system the moment you per-mit employees or clerks to use theirpersonal judgment or discrimination,or make exceptions in any part of theirroutine activities. I am sure that thereis not a single member in our organi-zation who would question our standin this regard.

Now let me come to the crux ofmy talk at this particular time. Mydepartment is known as the Financial,Recording and Bookkeeping Depart-ment. Every mechanical device, everysystem of card indexing, card tabu-lating, card recording, and card re-minding has been installed. W e havemachines that automatically addressyour envelopes, your lesson record

cards and your monthly due paymentcards. This machine makes a metalplate of your name, and that metalplate is used in various departmentsfor printing each member’s name on

The the various index cards. If a mistake M ys tic is made in making that original plate,Triangle the same mistake would appear inSept. every one of our records, and on1928 every piece of mail sent out by us,

unless it is checked and corrected.Special systems have been installedwhich automatically check up on errorsin names and addresses, and in re-gard to lectures, lessons, or magazinessent to members. A mistake in nameor address, in lessons being sent ordues being paid and entered, cannotcontinue very long without being auto-matically revealed by some particularfeature of the various systems. In thisdepartment of mine are a number ofemployees who are concerned onlywith the correct recording of the duesand other remittances sent by mem-bers. These employees operate piecesof machinery for writing, addressing,recording and entering these paymentsand receipts. They know nothing aboutthe psychic development, lodge stand-ing, personal, financial standing, or theage, disposition, habits or tendenciesof any member. To these employees,every member is simply an index card,and an item in the records they aredealing with. Therefore they cannothave any reason to show discrimi-nation, use personal judgment, biasedfavoritism or prejudice of any kind.W hat may be written to these mem-bers by the Imperator, the masters ofthe classes, the Supreme Secretary, orany other officer is not known to theseclerks, unless some notation is writtenon the index cards which they handle.To them, every member in theAMORC is exactly alike, and it isnone of their business whatsoever tothink about the members in any per-sonal sense. This makes the variousclerks in that department just like thekeys on the machines, the levers onthe electrical devices or the tabs onthe index cards they are using. Theclerks, cards and machinery, are alla part of my department equipment,and all of them operate automatically.

Most of you have noticed that everymonth a post card is sent to each oneof you reminding you of your monthlydues. The clerks who send these outin my department go through theirentire files of thousands of index cardsevery month, and a post card is auto-matically addressed to every one ofthose names, unless on the index cardappears a tab which indicates that that

person's dues are paid in advance.If the dues are not paid in advance,the post card is automatically sent tothe member.

W hy do we send these post cards?Some members write to me everymonth and say that I am wastingpostage, that I, personally, ought toknow that they pay their dues prompt-ly. Others write to the Imperator, orthe Supreme Secretary, and say: “Can'tyou see by my records that I paymy dues every month? Then whysend me a notice each month?’’ Thesemembers seem to think that the Imper-ator and the Supreme Secretary sitdown in their spare time and mail outthese post cards to the thousands of

members. How they can believe thatthe officers of our organization wouldhave time to do such a task as thisis beyond our comprehension. It takesthree or four clerks the best part of amonth to look after the financial rec-ords in one department. The Imperatorand the Supreme Secretary would notbe able to do a single other thing thanlook after these post cards if theywere giving it their personal attention.Then what would become of the thou-sand other demands for services andwork made by our members in lettersto the Imperator and the Supreme Sec-retary? On the other hand, the major-ity of our members have taken thepains and the time to write to us andsay that they are glad that we hadsent them that formal and simple littlereminder each month. Our system inthis regard is a duplicate of that usedby the LaSalle Institute and Blackstone Institute in Chicago, the I.C.S.and other correspondence schools, andmany other business organizations thatreceive monthly remittances o f’ any

kind. To ask us to have our clerkswatch out for certain names and notsend a post card to those particularmembers, perhaps thirty or forty outof many thousands each month, wouldmean that we would have to changeour system and make it one which wasnot automatic but one which was dis-cretionary and which allowed personal judgment and discrimination to enterinto it. The mistakes and delays whichwould then be made would ruin the

system, and hundreds of complaintsfrom members would naturally result.

The next automatic feature in ourdepartment is that which sends outthe little black and red printed leaf-lets, reminding members of their pay-ments when the cards in our filesautomatically show a delinquincy. Nowneither the Imperator, the masters ofthe classes, nor the Supreme Secretaryhave any time or any concern whichwould warrant them to go thumbingthrough thousands of index cards ev-ery day to see who is delinquent indues. That might be possible in anorganization with fifty members. Itmight be possible in a grocery store, abutcher shop or a bakery having thirty

or forty, fifty or a hundred cust-omers. It is not possible in a depart-ment store having a thousand or moreactive customers, and certainly itwould not be possible with an organ-ization having many thousands of old,and many hundreds of new membersto deal with each week of the month.Therefore, some automatic system hadto be devised and installed whichwould automatically check up the pay-ments of members' dues. After con-sulting with the best index and reccording systems used in the UnitedStates, and the buying of large equip-ment, the printing of special filingand checking cards, and the organi-zation of a special department, weestablished a system that is so auto-matic that it is soulless, impersonal,and free from the human equation.Such a system is the only one thatis fair, just, impartial and accurate,as well as highly efficient.

The moment any member in theorganization, in the highest grades orin the lowest, whether the Master of

a Lodge, Branch, or Group, a GrandMaster in any Lodge, or the mosthumble officer in any part of our workbecomes thirty days delinquent in thepayment of his dues, his particularcard in the system automatically movesout of its regular place into the de-linquent file. Clerks who operate thissystem do not know whether the par-ticular member who is delinquent isthe greatest of the Masters in ourorganization, or the most humble work

er in some unknown Group. Such per-sonal classifications mean absolutelynothing to the clerks in this depart-ment. The only thing the clerks knowis that there is a particular cardwhich has automatically revealed itsdelinquency, and therefore it is auto-matically placed in the delinquent file.The minute that card gets into thedelinquent file, an investigation is madeof the payments, as appear on our rec-ords, and automatically a statementprinted in black and red is sent to themember, stating clearly, kindly, andconsiderately just what our checkingdepartment has automatically discover-ed. Thousands of you have receivedthese notices many times. W e ask youto read them over and see if you canfind anywhere in their wording a sen-tence or a phrase that is unkind, in-considerate, unjust or intimating thatwe are trying to dun our members.Take, for instance, the first noticethat is sent to those who appear to bedelinquent. It says: “For some reasonwe have not received your remittanceto cover your financial obligations.Surely you wish to do your part indefraying the expense of the Order,of which you are a part. Our recordsshow the following:.....................” Thenwe write on these notices just what

our records show, and we follow thatup by stating that perhaps the re-mittance is on the way to us, perhapsit was sent and delayed, or perhapsthere is some error. In other words,we are merely attempting by thisnotice to let the member know justwhat we have found, and to ask himto let us know if we are right orwrong, or why the remittance is delin-quent. Have we no right to this in-formation? Yet every week I receivesome letters sent to either the Imperator, the Supreme Secretary, or the

Master of some class, asking why wedare to send out such a notice. Usuallysuch members say we ought to knowthat their payment will come event-ually, even if a little late, and there-fore we should be a little slow, in theirparticular case, in sending such a not-ice. In other words, these particularmembers think that the Imperator orthe Supreme Secretary should person-ally know that that member will event-

ually send the remittance, and ourknowledge of this should automaticallyprevent the automatic system in theBookkeeping Department from sendingout a notice. How could such a thing

be worked out? How can the clerksin this Recording Department knowthat any particular member is intend-ing to send his dues a little late, andtherefore should not be told about thepossible delinquency? On the otherhand, the average member has volun-tarily expressed appreciation of thesereminders. Why? Let me cite a fewexamples.

Such a reminder was sent to a mem-ber in Waterbury, Connecticut. It in-dicated that two months dues weredelinquent. It was the second reminder send to him. The first one had toldhim that he was delinquent one month.He paid no attention to it, however,for he was sure that he was not delinquent. Whe n the second remindercame, he knew that something waswrong. He began an investigation andfound that the money order for twodollars secured one month previously,put in an envelope and given to someone to mail, had never been mailed.And without receiving our notice, hewould not have known that the moneyorder was still in Waterbury, and themoney might have been lost. Anothermember received a reminder regardinghis one month’s delinquency, and heimmediately investigated and foundthat he had probably mailed it in an-other letter to another firm. By writingto that firm his suspicion was con-firmed, and the two dollars was for-warded to us by the other firm. Theycould not mail it to us until theyreceived our complete address, whichdid not appear on the money order.Several members in one locality who

received a number of reminders fromus became alarmed at the peculiar cir-cumstances, and upon investigating,found that some one in their localPost Office was stealing letters con-taining money. Neither we nor themembers would have known about themoney having been stolen if we hadnot sent prompt notices of delinquency.I could go on and cite hundreds ofcases, where these reminders have

helped to untangle situations thatmight have become very complex. Inone case, a member sent two dollars,and so worded his letter that we be-lieved the two dollars was for a copy

of the manual, instead of for dues.The reminder to him that he was de-linquent brought a letter telling us ofhis last remittance, and what it wasfor, and this corrected our records.

Occasionally these notices reachmembers just after they have mailedtheir remittances to us, and the remit-tance and the notice pass each otheron the way. In such cases, the mem-bers realize that no mistake or errorhas occurred, and they ignore thenotice, which is the proper thing to do.

Our members should remember thatthe dues are payable here at Head-quarters between the first and the fifthof the month, in advance. Septemeberdues should reach Headquarters be-fore the 5th or 7th of September,October dues should reach Headquar-ters before the 5th or 7th of October.Our reminders are not sent until themiddle of each month, thereby givingevery member ample time to make his re-mittances. On about the 15th of eachmonth, the first reminder regarding de-linquency is sent to our members, andit merely states that the previousmonth’s dues have not been receivedup to that time. Of course those whomail their remittances to us aroundthe 13th or 14th of the month will findthat their remittance passes our noticein the mail. Some forget that it takesfour or five days for mail to reach us,and about two days for all remittancesto be properly and automatically re-corded in all our records. If, by the10th of the following month, a remit-tance has not been received from adelinquent member, then another re-minder is sent, stating that the pre-vious month’s dues and the currentmonth’s dues have not been received.This plainly indicates that there iseither an unintentional delinquency onthe part of the member through over-sight, or that something has gonewrong with the remittances, or withour records. W e are not infallible inany of our systems, and if an errorappears, we gladly correct it. But one

thing is certain, that if we sent out nonotices, no reminders telling membersof what our records indicate, theywould not know whether an error hadbeen made on their part or not.

Some write in a very “peeved”manner and ask us why we do notwait longer in sending out our re-minders, and thereby give everyonemore time in which to make their re-mittances. Our answer is this: Thata system that is so elastic that itstretches out over an indefinite per-iod is of very little use. If we waittwo months before letting a memberknow that one of his remittances wasnot received, he would have very littlesuccess in tracing its loss, or in lo-cating the cause of the delay if hehad really mailed it. It is only bypromptly sending these notices andletting members know precisely whatour records show on the 15th of eachmonth that members are able to checkup on any mistake, or any trouble,that may have been connected with themailing of the remittance or the receiptof it by us.

There is just one additional pointin connection with our system thatrequires comment also. That is, theautomatic system of stopping the lec-

tures and holding them up when mem-bers become three and four monthsdelinquent, and do not write and tellus why they are delinquent, or askfor correction in the records. Let metake just one more illustration that istypical of many hundreds. The lessonsare mailed weekly to a certain memberfor many months. Then, all at onceour records show that he is delinquentfor one month’s dues. Automaticallya reminder goes to him, merely statingwhat our records show. No answer isreceived, no explanation, no remittance.On the 10th of the next month an-other reminder goes to the member,showing that two monthly remittanceshave not been received. This secondreminder pleads with the member tolet us know why, so that if error hasbeen made we can check it. Thatsecond notice distinctly states: “If youhave sent a remittance recently, whichcovers the above delinquency, it maybe in the mails or may have gone

astray. W e are trying to assist youin maintaining system in all your af-fairs with us, and will appreciate yourcooperation.” Another month goes byand no word is received from themember, and no remittance. Then aletter is sent, telling the member ex-actly what our records show, howmany times we have sent reminders,and again pleading with the memberto let us know why we have notheard from him, and asking how wemay trace the cause of the delinquencyif there has been some trouble aboutit. No answer comes to this letter,and no remittance. At the end of thethird month, that member’s card isautomatically placed in another fileby the clerks who do their work as

part of the machinery and the systemthey are using. The card of such amember is then put into the holp upfile, and all lectures and magazinesgoing to that person are stopped.About two weeks later, we may ormay not get a letter from the member.In many cases of this kind, we neverhear from the member again. In toomany cases we receive a peevish andunreasonable letter reading somethinglike this: ‘‘I notice that my lectures andmagazines have been stopped. I sup-pose it is because I am a few days

late with my dues. You ought to knowby my past record that I am ready topay my dues like all other members.Therefore, why did you stop my lec-tures? Is it because all you want is mydues and you do not care whether Istudy or not? I think that you peopleare very unfair, and so I want to re-sign.” That sort of a letter is re-ceived too often from persons who aresupposed to be conscious of businesssystems, and conscious of obligations.

W e have obligated ourselves inblack and white, and in good faith,to send every one of you a copy ofthe magazine and your lectures andlessons in proper form, promptly eachweek, with postage fully paid, and wehave promised to answer your lettersand give you advice and help. W ehave made certain other promises, allof which costs this organization tre-mendous sums of money each monthto fulfill. Very few of you hesitate

to notify us promptly if one of yourlectures go astray. Very few of youhesitate to remind us of the fact thatwe have delayed a little in sendingyou some special information that you

have asked for in a special letter, andwhich may be requiring a considerabletime to obtain from some of our re-search departments. Very few of youfeel any hesitancy in reminding us ofthe obligations that we have made toeach member. On the other hand,some of you seem to take very in-differently your obligations to us andto this organization. I am happy tosay that this is true in only a fewcases, and I do not want my commenthere to appear to be a scolding or acriticism. But I think it is well for

every member to realize just the dif-ficulties our various departments haveto face, and it may help some of ourrepresentatives and masters in variousGroups throughout the country tomake explanations to their members.When our lectures continue to goweek after week to any member whois neither paying his dues nor answer-ing our notices about delinquency, norour letters pleading with him to letus know why he is delinquent, wehave every reason in the world tostop sending the lectures and the mag-

azine. Not because we are trying toforce him to pay his dues, but becausewe are trying to find out why we donot hear from him, and because wehave found it is best not to continuethe lectures and the magazine untilwe know whether the person is stillinterested in the work or not. W e havefound, for instance, in over sixty per-cent of the cases where persons be-come delinquent and do not answerour notices or our letters, that event-ually they write to us and say: ‘‘I just thought I would write and letyou know that I have a package oflectures on hand which I have notopened and read for several months.About three months ago I lost interestin the studies and therefore did notopen any of the mail that was comingfrom you, and now I am ready tosend the lectures all back to you ifyou wish them, or will burn themor do as you suggest.” Therefore,

you see, we were justified in discon-tinuing the lectures to that personwhen we did not hear from him. Inother cases, delinquent members whoremained silent tell us that they have

not studied any of the lectures latelybecause they had to move and did notreceive them, and had not receivedour notices about dues or anythingelse. In such cases we were jus tif ied again in stopping the lectures. Inother cases, members tell us that theydo not open each lecture the weekthey receive it, but get a few weeksbehind in their studies and, therefore,did not know there were special com-munications with their lectures. When-ever you see the words “Special Com-munication” stamped on the envelope

containing a lecture, it means thereis something within it that should beread at once. Neglect in reading suchspecial communications often leads todelays and difficult problems.

In closing I wish to say that themost unkind and inconsiderate com-munications our department receivesare from such persons as the Brotherin the midwest who wrote to me butyesterday, and said that our noticesto him were “most inappropriate andoffensive,” in view of the fact that hewas not in arrears in his dues, what-soever. He wrote this letter on thelast day of July, and his own receiptsand membership card could plainlyshow him that his dues were paid onlyup to the end of May. and that there-fore he did owe for June and Julyat the very time he wrote to us. Yethe took extreme exception to beingreminded of his delinquency. He endedhis letter with this statement: “Pleaseget this point: My dues are not andhave not been in arrears! I would ap-preciate it if some correct bookkeep-ing was done at AMORC Headquar-ters.” As we have said, his letterwas accompanied by an official receiptfrom us which showed that his dueswere only paid to the end of May,

and that he did owe for June and Julyat the very moment he was writing tous. There was no error whatsoever onour part, and therefore his protestwas solely about the automatic work-

ing of a system that is as efficient andaccurate as humans can make it.I hope that this little talk will help

all of you to appreciate the systembeing used by Headquarters, and thatit will aid you in understanding ourcommunications. If your monthly re-mittances are mailed at your end aboutthe 25th of each month, to cover thenext month's dues, and if you en-close your card or write your nameand address very plainly on a piece ofpaper accompanying your remittance,you will receive due credit, and there

will be no mistakes of any kind. W eoften receive money with no card orletter enclosed, and sometimes only anaddress on the envelope enables us totell who it is from; yet very oftenthere is no address on the envelopeeither. Sometimes we receive only amoney order, and the name written onthe money order is so poorly writtenby the Post Office clerk that we can-not tell who the remitter is. Such re-mittances are held until we receive acomplaint from a member, then thematter is adjusted.

I shall be glad to hear from ourmembers in regard to this matter. Ifany of you think that our system is un-reasonable, I would be glad to have you write and let me know how andwhy it is so. Those of you who ap-preciate our system may also write,if you wish, and tell me what youthink of it. I am really anxious toknow whether we can improve uponthis system or not. And I trust thatnone of you will take this as a scold-ing or personal criticism, because itis my intention to help you in thematters of my department; and I thinkthat now, at the beginning of the fall,is a good time to bring these mattersbefore you.

CREATING KARMA

Editor, Mystic Triangle:I read in the last issue what oc-

curred to the postal clerk who robbedthe letters directed to AMORC. Itis a sad story. I have only once sentmoney to AMORC in unregisteredletters. There is a moral responsibilityon the part of a great many of themembers in this case. I am glad thatit was not the AMORC but the Fed-eral Government who brought the ac-tion that places him in jail. But, whatabout his wife and children? Manyof us members were responsible forhis downfall. W hat are we going todo? W hat is the Order going to do?I am ready and willing to do mypart. And, what will be done for theman when he comes out of jail?

(The Federal Government asked AM-ORC to sign the affidavits attachedto the hundreds of letters of complaintfrom members who had sent moneywhich was stolen. W ith the affidavitssigned it was proposed by the PostOffice Department to pay back themoney stolen, most of which AMORC

accepted as its loss. The money thuspaid back to AMORC was to betaken from the pension or retirementfund which would have gone to thepostal clerk or his wife and children,and from the bond supplied by theclerk. AMORC refused to sign theaffidavits and has crossed off the sev-eral thousand dollars as gone. Thiswill help the postal clerk considerablyin many ways. — Editor)

est, that I read in the last issue of“The Mystic Triangle", what the bro-ther Adam E., of Brooklyn, N. Y. hadto say about Mystic principles beinginvolved in the use of the Mirror, or

when he gazes at a photograph thathe sees changes in the reflection or thephoto.

Anything that one does not under-stand is mysterious, but when the lawis known and understood, the mysterydisappears. Is it not a fact that weall have an Aura about us? And is itnot also a fact that all Auras are notthe same in every detail. If it were sowould we not then all be alike? Lookalike, and act alike, as well as thinkalike, and have the same personal des-ires as well as same thoughts, not to

mention all looking alike?The Law is plain enough, it is notplaced out to public gaze where every-one may know it and understand it.From Brother Adam’s letter it wouldappear that he has not yet gone veryfar in the lectures, or at least farenough to get the Law, that controlssuch things; believing that this must beso, I would say to the Brother one littleword ‘Patience’; it will come, and

Little Helps for Our Members Picked Up in Conversations and Letters

Funny how some members will for-get important matters. Heard the Sec-retary reading a letter the other daythat puzzled him. Some Sister in LosAngeles wrote that she was sure thather unusual intellectual development,her brilliancy and inner development,entitled her to skip from the lowergrades to the higher ones. Didn’t wantto stay in the kindergarten, she said.Wanted to be among the smartest

ones. Wanted an immediate reply.Then forgot to sign her name to thetypewritten letter. Now she is probablywondering why Headquarters has sucha poor correspondence system. Andwe are wondering why such a smartperson forgets to sign letters. Guessthe joke is on the Sister.

I heard an interesting argument theother day in the Egyptian Lobby ofthe Reception room at Headquarters.A big Brother from a town in the mid-west was here to pay us a visit. Stop-ped at a large hotel in town, just be-fore lunch. Passed up a lunch ten-dered by a friend, and rushed out toour place to get a vegetarian meal. W as surprised when he found we didnot operate a kitchen and dining roomhere among our offices— and he washungry— so hungry the he “could eata big steak” if we would permit it.Suspected that we tried to control thediets of budding mystics. Secretaryhad to explain that diet is an individ-ual matter.

I heard the Imperator whisper to

the Secretary that Sister Clemens, theMaster of the Grand Lodge in Bos-ton, has her home filled nearly allthe time with patients— members whocome there for the unusual help shehas been demonstrating for years. Andnow she is taking a much neededrest.

It is also being whispered in theoffices that Grand Master Clark ofVancouver has recently found a way

of turning some of nature's productsinto a very important household andmanufacturing necessity. He is usingprinciples based upon our teachings,and intends to use the large incomefor building a Temple, and otherwisehelping the Order. Nice fellow, BertClark.

Also noticed the Imperator gather-ing things together in his worldtravelling satchel. Labels on it show it

has been in many lands. It is gettingready to go to Vancouver with theImperator and his wife early in Sep-tember. Just a hurried trip to talk toseveral thousand interested persons.

And, the other day Brother Musclow from Sacramento came in to seethe Imperator. I knew something newwas in the air, so I listened. Th eBrother has used some of our princi-ples to revive the lost Egyptian me-thod of hardening or tempering copper.He has succeeded so well that he gavethe big boss a knife made from softsheet copper, and it cuts wood likesteel. The Brother is also going to usethis process to help the Order.

That makes me recall a letter thatpassed around to some of the officersa few months ago from the Master ofthe Order in Washington, D. C. Hehas a large metallurgical laboratoryin the basement of his home, and isusing the principles explained in someof our lectures to do unusual thingswith bronze. A small fortune in moneywill come from that some day, and,then watch what the Brother will do.Everyone of us can tell exactly—weknow him so well.

Some members must believe theyare worth more in an accident thanthey are when they are well andhappy. A Brother in Northern Calif-ornia sent us a paper showing thathe had arranged for a ten thousanddollar accident policy to be paid toAMORC. He didn’t say what he was C

going to do that was so dangerous.Maybe he is getting the aviation fever,like so many other Californians.

Heard one of the Secretaries dic-tating a letter the other day to aBrother who had allowed his dues to

run in arrears for several months.Seems that he, like many others, justforgot to send the dues, and thenforgot to answer any of the noticesor letters sent to him for severalmonths. Then when the Secretarywrote again asking what was wrong,he became peeved at the question.Some folks seem to forget that all ofus here cannot tell what is wrongwhen a member is silent for threemonths. Best way always is to writeand tell us why you are in arrears,or why you cannot pay dues. That

saves a lot of writing and explainingin the end.Saw a report from the officers of

the Lodge in Chicago. W ith all theunderworld pictures being made thereit is good to see that at least severalhundred of the citizens of Chicagohave time for our lectures and lessons.Funny I never saw a machine gun andpistols in the hands of Chicago per-sons when I was there last year. Mustrun over there some time and attendone of our meetings, and then slip outand see the terrible city!

Every now and then some membersends to Headquarters a rare book onsome occult or mystical subject, andthen I sneak off and read. Our Lib-rary is rapidly filling up, and it is afine idea to send books that are oldand hard to get. By having them inthe Library here we are able to referto them when others write and askquestions, and in that way help agreat many. Have you any books tospare? Just wanted to know, that isall.

Yesterday I saw the August issueof this magazine going out of themailing department in so many bagsof mail that the auto truck lookedlike a moving wagon. I inquired andfound that every copy of the issuewas gone, and a second edition hadbeen ordered to take care of the hun-dreds of new requests coming in fromLodges and new members. By the time

this paragraph is in print for theSeptember issue, every copy of theAugust issue may be gone, and then,months later, some member will writein and say: “I did not get my Augustissue on the first of August; please

send me another copy". Of course theywill be disappointed. Why not writesooner instead of later?

It is whispered around Los Angelesthat Hermes Lodge No. 41, now thelargest Lodge in the North American Jurisdiction, divided into a number ofLodges with over 500 members, isseeking to become the Grand Lodgeof California. The members in SanFrancisco are fighting to retain theirtitle of Grand Lodge.

I have noticed some preparationsbeing made for a number of weddings

in the Los Angeles Lodge this winter.All the couples are going on theEgypt Trip for their honeymoon. Looks as though the Imperator andthe officers in Los Angeles wouldhave a real wedding feast down therewith so many marriages at one time.

Supreme Secreta ry and his wifehave been invited to so many citiesfor a vacation period, they are puz-zled where to go. I feel sure it willbe in the mountains somewhere, forthe Supreme Secretary is fond of themountains and likes to tramp and

climb.Telegrams are received daily from

members asking for special healingtreatments, and the letters receivedlater thanking the Order for the helpreceived proves what an unusual aidthis one Department really is in thelives of so many.

Records kept at Headquarters showthat the average member gladly re-ports general improvement in theirdaily affairs— business, health, happi-ness, development and interest. Allthese special helps constitute benefitsderived from membership, in additionto the teachings. Such helps are notpossible when the student is tryingto improve his life through the merereading of books bought from publish-ers. You could hardly expect the pub-lisher, or author of a public book, totake any personal interest in his read-ers.

Today the shipping department ofour printing plant turned over to usanother edition of the “Light of Egypt”,the propaganda book for the Order.The last edition was issued in Feb-

ruary. That means that fifty, or morethousand persons read the last editionin five months. The new edition isslightly enlarged. Some Lodges haveordered editions for their own use, withno reference in them to the corres-pondence work.

Speaking of publicity, I have noticedthat several hundred thousand of thelittle seals have been used by ourmembers. If you wish these attractiveseals in red and gold to place on theflap of your private letters, you mayhave them at cost— fifty cents a hun-dred.

Special delivery letters are still beingsent to Headquarters at an unneces-sary waste of postage. Our mail is soheavy, that it is brought to us inour own truck once a day from themain post office. Letters that comeduring the day to the Post Office—including special delivery ones— mustremain there until the next morning.Therefore the extra postage is wasted.Money sent in such letters is unsafe.Telegrams reach us very quickly, how-ever.

The hundreds who call each monthto see our Headquarters are surprisedand pleased with the beautiful recep-tion rooms, library, editorial rooms,offices and work rooms. The largestaff at work, the busy machines, theefficiency devices and arrangements,speak of progress and demonstrationof the very principles being taught inthe lessons.

Every one is quite enthusiastic aboutthe building of the Supreme Lodge

Temple here at Headquarters. It wasdelayed in being started until we hadevery other department of our dailyroutine well under way. It will bethe finest the Order has ever had,

judging from the many talks with con-tractors, artists, electricians and others,which I have overheard.

I do not know whether I am tellingsomething that should not be told atthe present time or not. If I am wrong,it will be blue penciled by the Editor.But, it is the plan of the Imperator tohold a special summertime First De-gree Initiation in the Supreme Templeeach year, beginning next year. Theremay be others, of course, but the sum-mer one will be for those correspon-dence members who can get to Calif-ornia during their vacation and re-ceive the First Degree Initiation inthe Supreme Lodge with the beautifulEgyptian ceremony conducted by theImperator and a staff of officers. Hun-dreds have asked yearly for this honor,and soon it will be possible.

An interesting argument occured theother day in the Secretary's Sanctum.A person who is left handed foundthat in giving the treatments with theright or left hand the hands shouldbe reversed for those who are left

handed. Some experiments were madeat once and this was found to becorrect. Where the right hand or rightfingers are indicated in any experi-ment, a left handed person shoulduse the left hand, and vice versa. Lefthandedness is due to transposition oflocation of some brain areas and thismakes it necessary for a reversal ofthe hands in all experiments. Thiswas the argument of the left handedBrother. Whatever may be the cause,the reversal seems to be necessary inour experiments.

SISTER asked me the otherday: “Since they knew thatgiving this lodge the keynumber five would cause thecross to be prominent andtroublesome in lodge acti-

vities, why did they not select someother number that would not attractsuch difficulties and trials?”

The answer is that Rosicrucians donot seek to avoid the cross, it holdsno terrors for them; and we know thatto reject the cross is to reject the

Master, since necessity joins them. Inthe above case the particular lodgewas selected for some great work, andbefore that could be done the lodgehad to be prepared by the Masterthrough the cross. Here we see theinevitable recompence which alwaysaccompanies it. A Rosicrucian is al-ways aware of this and it is to himthe reassuring symbol illustrating theequipoise of the Law, among manyother things. In the number 5 manyblessings lie concealed, and it is anhonored member of the family of num-

bers.Since I am on the subject I willtake up a few other examples. W e areall familiar with the superstitious dreadthe number 13 evokes in the ordinaryhuman being. This was bad enough inthe old days and it is getting less andless excusable as the Aquarian Ageprogresses. I hope all my brothers and sisters have managed to rid themselvesof such a low and vulgar fancy. Anal-yzing, we find that 12 is consideredlucky while the next number is con-sidered very much the opposite. Now

12 is the number of the apostles with-out the Master; 13 is the ultimate num-ber of atoms forming a molecule; 12is also the number of “moons” ornatural months in a year. W hat ifthe Moon had rejected the Sun (M as -ter)? I suppose you see now why somany people “reject” the number 13—they would like to have the Master

without the cross; happily, brothersand sisters, that can never be achievedat all. It has been proposed that thecalendar be changed to include 13instead of 12 months in the year. Thatwould be very fine indeed; it wouldveritably be a symbol of the comingof the Master in the Aquarian Age—the so called second coming of Christ.

W e understand quite well how it isthat people ignorantly avoid the num-bers 5 and 13. Rejection of the firstusually means the choice of the down-ward road to fame and riches. Rejec-tion of the second usually means re- jection of Life, no matter how appear-ances may seem otherwise. They ac-cept Judas, but not the Master. W ecan only pity their blindness, for thesoul is given ample opportunity tochoose.

As a mystic progresses the number5 becomes more and more of a val-uable aid, by which he accomplishesmany wonderful things. Other remark-able numbers are 3, 7 and 9, also 4,which is more closely related to 13than you think. The number 10 isoften neglected by mystics, though itis not less remarkable than any other.

Some time ago I endeavored to ex-plain the “hidden” meaning of thenumber 10 to a rather sceptical mater-ialist, telling him that it stood for thegrand duality, which is statically aunity and dynamically divided intopositive and negative, and that it alsodenoted man and woman.

“Yes, I can see that," he said. “Manis just a streak and woman a nullity.That’s correct enough.”

It was a good thing that he did notspeak to one of my sisters, or hemight have learned something about anullity that would perhaps have donehim a lot of good.

Man and woman— two crosses, join-ed. “And they lived happily everafter,” says the fairy story, not withoutsome reason. Often a great deal of

trouble disappears from the life ofsingle persons ofter they have married—wisely. On the other hand it isof course possible to marry trouble,but we do not wish to do that.

The number 10 also indicates thecompanionship and equality of thesexes, and it will be a very prominentnumber during this age. The mascu-line and feminine powers joined meanthe birth of the soul powers, and ledon by the feminine the “Son” veryrapidly rises into infinity.

The metric weights and measureswill probably be universally adopted.At any rate the undue prominence of12 belongs to the past age rather thanthis.

The q u e s t i o n seems suggested:

“Should we then never avoid thecross?” That is a large question. W eknow that Socrates and Jesus did notavoid it when they met it in the Pathas a definite test. At the same timewe know that Socrates retreated withhonor from foes on the battlefield,and that he retreated with somewhatless honor from the presence of hiswife when he could stand no more.About Jesus we read that he used

Both went through their finaltests publicly— in order to illumine thePath for us— and with signal honors.

It has been said that each one of ussails under “sealed orders” . Henceeach person must decide for himselfwhether to meet or avoid a “cross”,and the only authority we can appealto is the Master Within.

In the case of the lodge mentionedabove, the number came to it in dueorder—not arbitrarily nor by accident— and to refuse it would have meantthat it had to be accepted by someother lodge. In such cases our duty isplain: W e must accept. But by thelight we walk in, we may see thatwith the cross comes great blessings,and so we accept with joy.

This manual has been demanded for years, urged, and awaited. Now it is ready. The first andonly Rosicrucian Manual containing matter suggested by the Masters, Officers and Members of our variousLodges. WHY IT IS PUBLISHED—

As all our members know, the Order publishesno books for public sale or for sale to its mem-bers. The Order is not a publishing concern, andits secret teachings cannot be commercialized inbooks. That is how the book comes to be offered to ourmembers today. The Order could not, ethically,print it, but a private concern could print it withauthority. Not for profit, not for personal gain, butfor the glory of the Great Work, the book has beenbeautifully produced.
