THE NATIONAL CURRICULUM:

Our Key Stage 4 Programme for the BLUE pathway. We have a three year Key Stage 4 which requires pupils to make their GCSE/BTEC option choices in Year 8. We believe that one curriculum is not suitable for all pupils which is why we are running 3 different pathways. In deciding which pathway to place your daughter on, we have looked at a number of areas including ability, aptitude, report comments and tracking data over time. We have taken great care to place your daughter on the pathway which will enable her to achieve to her full potential. Your daughter is on the BLUE pathway. A number of subjects will be part of the school core curriculum for the BLUE pathway during Key Stage 4: English Language

English Literature Mathematics Science Religious Education A Humanity: either Geography or History

BTEC Health & Social Care OR BTEC Child Development & Care Physical Education (not examined)

Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education (not examined) The main differences on the BLUE pathway are that your daughter does not have to do a Modern Language as part of her core curriculum and that she must choose either Geography or History SHP in Option Z. By the time of Options Evening she will already have had a one-to-one meeting to explain this. In addition to the BLUE core curriculum above, your daughter has 3 more option choices to make from the blocks below. It is really important that the details of each course are looked at carefully to ensure the course your daughter selects is suited to her interests. Discussions with subject staff will also greatly aid this process. A copy of the Options Form that your daughter needs to complete is on the next page and it has been completed as an example. It is important to note that whilst every effort will be made to accommodate first choices and to run all courses, this may not always be possible due to a number of constraints (eg: staffing, facilities, class sizes etc). This is why we ask for second choices as well – it is important that these are also carefully selected. NB: Art and Textiles should NOT both be selected as the courses are very similar. This also applies to BTEC/GCSE courses (eg Business, Media & Art).

Course Description

All students entering Year 9 will follow the Edexcel GCSE course in Religious Education. The course builds on work done in Key Stage 3 and places emphasis on the exploration of religious teaching as they influence moral values. The syllabus has two main aspects:

� ‘Religion and Life’ Including topics such as belief in God, the question of suffering, life

after death, abortion, euthanasia, human relationships, prejudice, marriage and family life, the role of women, religion and the media.

Course Description

Geography is the study of your world: planet Earth! It is all about where places are, what life is like there (or even here) and both how and why they are changing. There are four key units to the GCSE syllabus:

x Geographical Skills and Challenges x The Natural Environment x The Human Environment x Investigating Geography through Controlled Assessment

These are broad headings: we study physical landforms, human geography and environmental issues through an interesting variety of examples, people and places, rich and poor, industrious and dangerous, from culturally similar to richly diverse, local, national and worldwide.


There are four assessments (one per unit) worth 25 % each. Examinations: There are end of course examinations in Year 11 for each of the first three units above. The skills and challenges exam is 1 hour; the other two are 1 hour 15 minutes. All are tiered, foundation or higher. Students must answer a mixture of question styles. Each paper is worth 25% of the full GCSE Geography each time. Geographical Investigation-Controlled Assessment: In the summer term of Year 10 we go on a field trip and use the data collected to start a fieldwork based piece of controlled assessment. In the autumn term of Year 11 we complete the tasks to a maximum of 2000 words allocated to the write up. This is worth 25% of the GCSE.

Physical Education - Core

Course Description

The aim of the course is to introduce the girls to new activities and to further develop sports skills previously learnt. x During Year 9 pupils will experience lessons in team games,

rhythmic gym, fitness, dance, badminton, rounders and athletics. x In Year 10 pupils are offered the opportunity to attend local junior

schools during lunchtime to lead sporting activities to the younger year groups.

x In Year 11 the girls select 2 sports from a list of 8 activities that they complete for 2 six week blocks for 2 hours a fortnight. The activities include ice skating, zumba, spinning, swimming, circuits and dance.

x There will be various clubs during lunchtime which pupils will be able to attend for enjoyment or competition including hockey, football, netball, gymnastics and badminton.

x Girls are expected to wear school kit to all lessons.


In Year 10 the girls are constantly assessed as they go through the course and will receive feedback on their progress.

Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education

Pupils will continue with the PSHCE course they have been following since Year 7. In Years 9, 10 and 11 the time for this course is also one hour a fortnight. The programme will be delivered by a specialist team. Programmes of study for PSHCE:

There will be a number of visiting speakers from the Careers Service and other nationally recognised groups. Miss Laxton co-ordinates PSHCE for all pupils.

Work Experience All students undertake a two week Work Experience placement in Year 10. The Work Experience programme enables students to develop a greater understanding of the world of work and the skills and knowledge required to enable young women to succeed in new roles and situations in today’s world. The focus of the work experience placement revolves around the development of key skills:

� Communication � Application of number � Information Technology � Working with others � Improving own learning and performance � Problem solving

Students are offered experiences which will identity links between skills used and developed in school and those necessary in the workplace. Placements are also intended to offer experiences which will develop an understanding of workplace disciplines rather than an offer a rehearsal for any specific career aspirations. The school has recently been accredited with a Quality Assurance Certificate for our work experience programme. Mrs Nanuck is responsible for co-ordinating our Work Experience programme.

Course Description

Citizenship is a vibrant and exciting subject which allows students to explore current topics, news items and controversial issues in the classroom. Students are encouraged to keep up to date and discuss relevant topics which they find interesting, as well as investigating one topic in depth for their controlled assessment. There are three main areas we cover throughout the course:

x Communities and Identities. This includes crime, human rights legal rights and how different people contribute to society.

x Power, politics and the media. This topic covers how and why we vote (or not) and how voting systems work. We also look at the media influence over the public and how different newspapers and advertising change people’s minds about society and people.

x The UK in the world. Here we look at how we fit into a global community. It includes poverty around the world, how other countries address human rights, global warming and charity work.


60% is controlled assessment – the students chose a topic they wish to investigate and research it, including outside speakers and debates. Students then take part in some form of ‘Change Action’ in order to raise awareness of their issue to others. 40% is an examination, which tests knowledge and understanding of the topics covered in the course.

Course Description

During the course the students will study professional works which will probably include Matthew Bourne’s The Nutcracker, Christopher Bruce’s Swansong, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s Rosas Danst Rosas and Still Life at the Penguin Café by David Bentley. These works will be used to inform the student’s own choreography, performances and theory work. The course gives the opportunity for the students to work on their own, and in groups where they can improve their team work and leadership skills.


Perform: x 20% Set study – The exam board have two set dances which every

dance student must learn. x 20% Performance in a duo/group – Between the teacher and the

students a piece needs to be created around one of the set works. Compose:

x 15% Solo choreography – The student must create a solo based on 3 motifs from a professional work

x 25% Stimulus choreography – this can either be a group or solo choreography for which the student chooses the stimulus for herself.

Both are assessed live by the teacher and videoed. Again the students might be asked to perform for moderation.

Appreciate: x 20% Written examination – This component of the GCSE will

question their knowledge of choreography and professional works. Taken in the summer of year 11 and externally assessed.

The Individual Media Studies Portfolio: Students explore the representation of social groups through a project which is selected from briefs by the teacher. This typically is a study of the representation of women in advertising or the representation of youth in soap operas. There is an opportunity to do practical work with the creation of a media (advert, article) and you will learn how to use photo editing software. Textual Analysis For the exam, you will learn technical vocabulary such as describing camera use, editing and special effects as well as exploring areas of representation to either a magazine cover or an Action Adventure film extract. Television Comedy For the exam you will look at television channels (BBC, ITV, C4) and explore the scheduling and content of television comedy. You will explore at least two comedies in depth and discuss representation and how the audience get pleasure from comedy. Production Portfolio This is for the controlled assessment aspect of the course where students are given a filming brief (pop video, print magazine). The briefs are teacher selected and you will apply your technical knowledge to plan, design, film/photograph and edit your product.

This excellent, new qualification equips students with a range of industry relevant skills useful to various areas of Media. The majority of assessment is through 3 mandatory units and 1 optional unit. Mandatory Controlled Assessment – Internally Marked 1. Students create a portfolio which explores and investigates the solution to a

brief set by the exam board. This is focused on exploring the process of developing a media product.

2. Students create a portfolio evidencing a number of tasks, and then a main design task exploring different methods of using software, images and film to create a final product. This is focused on the finish of the final product.

Mandatory External Assessment – Externally Marked 1. Over 30 hours (20 hours in class) the examiner gives students a media

product to create which must then be constructed in a 10 hour off-timetable window.

Additional (Compulsory) Module (Selected by Teacher) – Internally Marked 1. Exploration in to how moving images can enhance products i.e. animations,

moving images on websites, in advertising etc…
