    Introduct ion

For the past few years, a select group of Christian social thinkers have

engaged in dialogue with free-market econo mists concerning the m orality

of market activity. This friendly interd isciplinary exchan ge inspired the con-

ception of a n ew subdiscipline that sought to synthesize central aspects of

theology and econom ics, thereby giving rise to a n ew body of scholarship

termed econom ic personalism . This essay introdu ces econo mic p ersonalismin its historical, philosop hical, and practical com pon ents.

particularly its recognition of the dignity of the human person and the

concern for justice that stems from th is recognition.

There have been attempts to add ress econom ic developm ent within th e

theoretical context of Christian moral concerns. These previous efforts

sought a Christian economics as part of a comprehensive social theology

that could elaborate the p roper m oral structures for all areas of social life

    political, cultural, and econom ic.

These past efforts have shown them selves inadequ ate in o ne respect or

anoth er. A typical weakness is to o ffer principles of m orality for the m arket

that lack either sufficient kno wledge of morals o r sufficient kn owledge of

econom ics. In eith er case, the result is an in ability to achieve a true synthe-
