Summarizing our spring activities, the Granite State Competition was smoothly directed by our VP for Competitions, Dr. Carleen Graff. Many thanks are owed to the several members who offered their time to help with monitoring, registration, and other duties. The Plymouth State Univeristy Collegiate Chapter of NHMTA served a critical role, providing monitoring throughout the entire day. The Winners Recital was held at the Concord Community Music School the following day. Additionally, the spring Evaluations, headed by Meagan Maganti, were well coordinated and attended. Again, numerous members offered their services as site coordinators, administering tests for theory, ear training, and composer-of the-year biographies , as well as serving as adjudicators. Many thanks to all that contributed their time and efforts to these two important events, and congratulations to the many students who participated! On a more serious note, our decision to not host the Fall Competition has been a difficult journey for our Board members. I wish to extend my thanks to all of you who participated so thoughtfully in the survey sent by our Board several months ago. Please see the enclosed letter of explanation for clarification, and feel free to contact myself or Carleen Graff with any questions. June 2014

Dear NHMTA Members,

After much discussion with the NHMTA Board, MTNA officials, and our own members (through a recent survey), we

have made the decision to cancel the NHMTA Fall Competition this year. Recent rule changes regarding online teaching

made by the MTNA Competitions Committee now allow students to enter our state competition when neither the student

nor the teacher are New Hampshire residents. We feel that this violates the mission of the state level competitions which

is to provide the opportunity for New Hampshire students and teachers to represent our state at the Eastern Division level

and possibly beyond.

Specifically, the new rule pertains to students whose legal residence is in another state, i.e., boarding school, college, and

university students. In the past, these students have been allowed to enter the MTNA Fall Competitions through their

current New Hampshire teacher. The new MTNA rule now allows these students to take lessons via the internet with a

teacher who may reside in another state, and enter the competition in New Hampshire. In MTNA’s view, internet lessons

are deemed to have taken place in the state where the student is located rather than at the location of the teacher’s studio.

This scenario actually arose at our Fall Competition last year. Despite our objections, a boarding student whose legal

residence is in Illinois, and who was studying via the internet with his former teacher from Illinois, was allowed by

MTNA to enter in New Hampshire. The student was eventually declared a winner in the New Hampshire competition and

he and his teacher were allowed by MTNA to represent our state at Eastern Division. As a result, the entrants and

teachers who legitimately represent New Hampshire were denied the opportunity to fully participate in the competition.

It is important to note that this interpretation of internet lessons was imposed upon us by the MTNA Competitions

Committee without warning or recourse this past fall even though it was not published in the official rules. (As a direct

result of this issue, MTNA has since published the new policy in the 2014-2015 Competition Rules.) We believe that we

are the first state chapter to experience the unfortunate results of this new rule. Since our state has large number of

boarding schools, as well as colleges and universities, the prospect of this scenario happening again is quite high.

The NHMTA Board feels that its mission should be to support NH teacher members and their students, not to serve as a

potential portal for teachers from other states. We realize that our decision to cancel this event denies our own New

Hampshire students the opportunity to participate in the Division and National Competitions. Our discussions with

teacher members who regularly enter their students in these competitions confirmed that they were sufficiently

uncomfortable with the rules change to consider creating an alternate event to better serve NH students. As a result,

NHMTA is now offering an alternative event; the Granite State Duet Competition. Detailed information and

registration forms can be found in this Newsletter as well as on our website (nhmta.net).

We have informed MTNA officials that we will reconsider hosting the Fall Competition should they rescind their policy

regarding online teaching and we hope that they will seriously reconsider our concerns. As your Board, our goal is to do

our best to represent and support you as well as all of our wonderful, aspiring students. Please feel free to contact me at

any time with your thoughts, concerns, and questions about this decision.

Sincerely,

Kathryn Southworth

NHMTA President, 2013-2015
