Segment overview

Despite the C segment being in overall decline with a downwards trend that has been evident for around 10 years, the compact segment is still a highly relevant, competitive and important part of the overall market. This especially when looking at the segment from a fleet point of view. This partly due to the C-SUV segment which has become a very visible trend that is expected to continue for years to come, however competition within the C segment is still highly aggressive with brands such as VW, Škoda and Ford leading the way in terms of segment share. VW continues to update and make sure that their brands can dominate the market by updating its offer, and this can be seen with anticipated release of both the new Octavia and Golf. So even though SUVs are the trend, the compact segment is still highly relevant and important for a manufacturer as a backbone for its portfolio. This is especially the case when considering that the Astra is the second best-sellling Opel, only topped by the high-volume B segment Corsa.

The new Astra.Lighting technologies.

IntelliLux LED® Matrix headlights

The Opel Astra was the first car in its class to introduce the adaptive IntelliLux LED® Matrix headlights. The entire headlights consist of 8 LED sections per side, of which each section can be individually switched on and off according to the situation. The patterns all automatically adapt according to the driving situation, helping to avoid glaring others while offering drivers the best in terms of vision in the dark.

Technology:• 8 individual LED light sections per headlights

that can be individually activated, and in general constitute the high beam light distribution.

• Oncoming, preceding traffic and street light from urban areas are all detected and recognized by Opel Eye front camera bundle which then causes the IntelliLux LED® Matrix headlights to switch to the corresponding lighting pattern.

• Driving data such as steering angle, speed and the utilization of the turning indicator additionally influence which lighting pattern is activated.

• The information gathered by Opel Eye front camera bundle, driving data and the driving conditions are used by the system to calculate in real time when the LED must be deactivated to stop dazzling other drivers.

• Each section illuminates/blackens out a small section of the road.

• The area around the darkened section remains optimally lit.

Benefits:• Optimal illumination of the road in every

situation, while the headlights stay on high beam around the darkened section.

• The increased illumination and vision give drivers the ability to reduce the reaction time by a considerable amount.

• The system has no moving components, making it more reliable and less troublesome to maintain.

accurate illumination• Visibility improved by up to 40 metres • High Beam Assist standard for LED lights

Lighting patterns and modes

The IntelliLux LED® Matrix headlights use the information provided by driving data, driving conditions and Opel Eye front camera bundle to switch between the following modes:

Town Light

Town Light mode is wide and symmetric, and is designed for optimum vision when driving through lit town roads.

Benefits: • Optimized vision on lit road conditions• Avoids glaring other road users • Gives greater vision to the sides • Relieves driver of having to do the switching

Operation: Town Light mode is active when either 1. the vehicle is travelling up to 55 km/h 2. exterior ambient light is detected

Motorway Mode

Motorway Mode recognizes whether the vehicle is on a motorway, and responds by adapting the headlights for optimum nighttime motorway driving.

Benefits: • Avoids glaring other road users• Illuminates a greater distance ahead • Relieves the driver from having to do the

switching

Operation: 1. The vehicle detects whether it is on the motorway by registering the following:

– low amount of steering wheel activity is detected

– vehicle is travelling over 105 km/h – GPS curve radius calculation

2. As a result, Motorway Mode – decreases the left headlight beam intensity and length

– increases the right headlight beam intensity and length

Country Light

Country Light is similar to low beam, but illuminates a greater field to the sides as wheel as the road.

Benefits: • Illuminates a greater distance ahead• Illuminates a greater area to the sides • Avoids glaring other road users

Operation: 1. Country Light mode is activated when

– travelling outside of built-up areas – travelling over 55 km/h – relieves driver of having to do the switching

2. Country Light automatically adjusts when oncoming traffic is detected

Cornering Light

Cornering Light illuminates the road in the direction of travel on slow corners.

Benefits: • Greater visibility of the direction of travel• Helps illuminate hidden obstacles• Illuminates desired parking slots

Operation: Cornering Light mode is active when both

– vehicle is travelling up to 40 km/h – indicator has been activated

Curve Light

Curve Light illuminates the road in the direction of travel on high-speed corners.

Benefits: • Greater visibility when taking corners at

higher speeds• Gives drivers confidence at higher speeds

Operation: Curve Light mode is active when both

– the vehicle is travelling over 40 km/h – steering angle breaches a certain threshold

Energy Saving Mode

Energy Saving Mode switches the cornering lights on and off in cohesion with the Start/Stop System.

Benefit: • Saves energy on the accumulator

Operation: Energy Saving Mode switches the cornering lights

– off when the Start/Stop System stops the engine

– on when the engine restarts

Manoeuvring Mode

Manoeuvring Mode provides extra light around the vehicle, and is designed for parking and reversing.

Benefits: • Illuminates desired parking slots • Illuminates greater areas to the sides

Operation: 1. The vehicle is set in reverse by the driver 2. Manoeuvring Mode engages the cornering light with 60 % intensity 3. To deactivate Manoeuvring Mode, the driver must both

– disengage reverse – be travelling over 7 km/h

14

The new Astra.Driver assistance systems.

The new Astra is filled with useful and sometimes even life-saving assistant systems that make driving easy and safe: • Forward Collision Alert (FCA)• Following Distance Indication (FDI)• Lane Keep Assist and Lane Departure

Warning (LKA and LDW) • Automatic Emergency Braking with

Pedestrian Detection (AEB)• Traffic Sign Assistant (TSA)

• Automatic Cruise Control (ACC) • Full Speed Range Automatic Cruise

Control (FSRA)• Side Blind Zone Alert (SBZA) • Auto-learn Tyre Pressure Monitoring

System (TPMS) • Hill Start Assist (HSA)

Forward Collision Alert (FCA)

FCA calculates the distance of vehicles ahead and pedestrians, and warns the driver in case of a possible collision. The driver can choose the preferred distance.

Benefit: • FCA helps the driver avoid fatal collisions

and tailgating fines

Operation: 1. FCA is permanently active from 8 km/h upwards 2. To change the distance parameters, scroll to the FCA control via the Driver Information Cluster controls 3. Choose from one of the following distance parameters:

– ‘Near’ – ‘Mid’ – ‘Far’

4. When driving too close behind a vehicle, the driver is warned via

– an audible warning – an icon lights up in the Driver Information Cluster

Following Distance Indication (FDI)

FDI calculates the distance to the vehicle up ahead and presents the value to the driver in time.

Benefit: • FDI helps the driver avoid fatal collisions

and tailgating fines

Operation: 1. FDI is permanently active from 40 km/h upwards 2. FDI information is visible by navigating to the FDI screen in the DIC

– when a vehicle is detected: the distance is displayed

– when no vehicle is detected: two dashes are displayed

Note: FDI is either camera-based or radar- based, depending on the vehicle model.

Lane Keep Assist (LKA)

LKA monitors the lane markings, and provides gentle steering wheel turns, to return the vehicle to its corresponding lane if the driver unintentionally exits it.

Benefit: • LKA drivers avoid fatal accidents

Operation: 1. Activate LKA via the hard switch 2. When driving between 60 km/h and 180 km/h and an unintentional lane exit is anticipated,

– amber warning light in DIC appears – LKA gently tries to counteract the steering torque

3. If no reaction from the driver is detected, – amber warning light in DIC flashes 3 times

– LKA actively turns the wheel 4. LKA returns to standby when driver reacts via the steering wheel or indicator

Note: does not continuously steer the vehicle. Note: switches to standby when temporary lane markings are detected.

Benefits: • No-pedal motorway cruising• Stress-free drive

Operation: 1. Automatic Cruise Control is activated in the same way as the regular cruise control 2. When travelling behind another vehicle, the radar system detects the pace of the vehicle ahead, and ACC adjusts the speed 3. To overtake, the driver must simply manoeuvre into an open lane, which will make ACC act like a regular cruise control

Emergency Call

Emergency Call is a manually and automatically operable service that, when activated, imme-diately connects the car with the local Public Safety Answering Point. Emergency Call offers the following benefits:

• Calls automatically local Public Safety Answering Point

• Provides emergency services automatically with the precise location of the vehicle

• Manually operable, letting witnesses inform emergency services of occurrences with greater ease and precision

• Easy to operate, keeping drivers focused on the road

• 24/7/365 service coverage that immediately contacts the relevant Public Safety Answering Point

• Gained customer trust through offering greater peace of mind

• Emergency Call works in 324 countries, including those of the EU and the EFTA

Full Speed Range Automatic Cruise Control (FSRA)

FSRA is available with automatic transmissions and extends the ability of ACC so that the vehicle can follow a vehicle from a full stop, i.e. in a traffic jam.

Benefits: • Supports drivers in start/stop traffic jams

on high-speed roads • Helps to prevent collisions in traffic jams

Operation: 1. When coming to a full stop that is up to 3 seconds long, ACC will automatically react 2. When coming to a full stop that is longer than 3 seconds, the driver can use one of the following to relaunch the vehicle if the vehicle in front is moving:

– resume switch – throttle

3. On relaunching, the vehicle will follow the vehicle ahead 4. If the driver does not respond, the driver will be reminded for a response via

– green icon in DIC – audible reminder

Assistance systems

Arguments• Forward Collision Alert and Automatic

Emergency Braking help drivers to avoid collisions with pedestrians and vehicles that could even possibly be fatal

• Lane Keep Assist and Lane Departure Warning help to keep drivers safe when drifting out from a lane

• Traffic Sign Assistant and Following Distance Indicator help drivers avoid unnecessary fines

• Automatic Cruise Control and Full Speed Range Automatic Cruise Control help to make a long journey enjoyable and easy with no-pedal driving

• Lane Change Alert and Side Blind Zone Assist give drivers a good indication of whether there is a car currently in the blind spot

Side Blind Zone Alert (SBZA)

SBZA detects and warns the driver of rapidly approaching vehicles on parallel lanes, currently in the blind spot.

Benefit: • SBZA offers drivers greater assurance when

changing lanes

Operation: 1. SBZA is active at all speeds and times and can be activated/deactivated via infotainment settings 2. When driving and a vehicle is detected in the blind spot zone to either rear sides of the driver, SBZA warns the driver with:• Turning signal applied:

– icon in DIC flashes – side mirror icon flashes – audible warning

• Turning signal not applied: – icon in Driver Information Cluster (speedometer etc.) turns on

– icon in the outside mirror turns on

Hill Start Assist (HSA)

Hill Start Assist temporarily prevents the vehicle from rolling backwards by automatically holding the brake until the vehicle is moving forward.

Benefits: • Prevents the vehicle from moving backwards

when on steep roads• Makes parking and manoeuvring out of

parking spaces on steep roads easy• Makes traffic jams on steep roads effortless

Operation: 1. Hill Start Assist is active when

– the vehicle is standing still – the vehicle is on a gradient of 5 % or more

2. Hill Start Assist deactivates as soon as the vehicle is moving forward

Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

The Tyre Pressure Monitoring System measures the pressure of all four tyres. The data is displayed on the Driver Information Cluster and is accessible at all times. If pressure in the tyres is critically high or low, the system will warn the driver with a symbol that appears in the instrumentation.

Assistance systems

The new Astra.Parking assistance systems.

Arguments• Parking made easier• Introduction of digital Rear View

Camera offers an improved overall experience over the analogue version

• Help to avoid parking accidents• Make drivers aware of what is in front

of and behind them

To make parking easy and trouble-free, Opel offers assistance whatever the need:

Park Assist, front and rear

Park Assist detects the distance between the vehicle and external objects.

Benefit: • Park Assist helps drivers assess the

distance to nearby objects to avoid collisions when parking

Operation: 1. Park Assist is automatically enabled at speeds below 11 km/h, and can be activated/deactivated via the button 2. When parking in reverse or when going forward, the system informs the driver of the distance to external objects via the following:

– audible pulsing sounds: indicate the distance to the external object with the speed of the beeping (the faster the repeat, the closer one is getting)

– visual DIC display: indicates the distance with a graphic aid

Note: Park Assist, front, is additional to the Park Assist, rear.

Advanced Park Assist II (APA II)

APA finds a fitting parking spot by calculating a space, and actively parks the vehicle. APA II controls the steering, and gives throttle assist. Operation: 1. APA is active at speeds below 30 km/h with slot search information available at the push of a button 2. The driver first chooses either perpendicular or parallel parking, and then chooses a parking spot 3. APA guides the driver via prompts over the DIC or the infotainment screen to the manoeuvre starting point, and takes over once approved 4. The driver only controls the engine leaving the vehicle, to control the steering until completing the manoeuvre

Rear View Camera (RVC) (analogue)

The RVC is mounted in the rear bumper, and displays its 130° viewing angle in the info-tainment screen.

Benefit: • RVC gives drivers a clear view of objects

behind them when reversing

Operation: 1. The infotainment screen automatically displays the RVC angle as soon as the vehicle is put into reverse 2. Trajectory path lines, controlled by the steering wheel, give a visual prediction of where the vehicle is going 3. The display is deactivated when exceeding a certain speed driving forwards, or if reverse has not been reapplied within 10 seconds

Rear View Camera (RVC) (digital)

The digital version of the Rear View Camera is an upgrade from the analogue version, and is available with the Multimedia Navi Pro.

The digital Rear View Camera offers the following advantages over the analogue version: • Higher resolution images which are sharp

and precise• A wider field of vision is presented giving

drivers even more support when reversing out of parking spots

• The warped image from the camera is processed by the infotainment system in order to remove the warping effect, and to give a more accurate representation of the area behind

• Improved night-time vision with a sharper, lighter and clearer image

1 Fuel consumption data and CO2 emission data are determined using the Worldwide harmonized Light vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP), in acc. with regulations R (EC) No. 715/2007, R (EU) No. 2017/1153 and R (EU) No. 2017/1151 (in the versions respectively applicable). 2 Please note that fuel consumption and CO2 emission data are preliminary and have been determined according to WLTP test procedure methodology. EC type approval and homologation have not yet been acquired. The preliminary values might differ from official final type approval data. 3 Vehicles with BlueInjection technology will need regular AdBlue® top-ups also in between recommended service intervals. An indicator integrated into the on-board computer will warn you when you need to top up. More information under www.opel.com 4 During trailer towing do not exceed a maximum speed of 80 km/h, in case of special regulations 100 km/h. The speed limits are also recommended in countries with higher permitted speed for trailer-vehicle combinations. Pay attention to the local speed limits. For trailers with low driving stability and caravan trailers the use of an oscillation damper is strongly recommended.
