Letter from Our Director of Camping

Hello Scouts and Families, When the Coronavirus crisis began, one of the first questions we asked was, “How is this going to impact summer camp?” As times went on, the reality of providing a traditional summer camp experience became less and less likely. For us, the question had now become, “How can we continue to provide a safe program to our Scouts and leaders?” With careful thought and planning over a few weeks’ time, our Camp Is Where Home Is program was born. While we will not be able to experience the pristine wilderness that is Hidden Valley Scout Reservation of Camp Tuckahoe this summer, our virtual program will still provide much of the advancement that every summer at camp does. In 2020, this program will take place for Scouts and leaders in the comfort and safety of their own home. Virtual merit badge sessions, camp-wide activities, entertaining campfires, and engaging adult leader programs are just some of the opportunities that await this summer. This guide will serve as a means for you to better understand the finer points of the Camp Is Where Home Is program. Details include information regarding registration, logistical operations, and program features. Schedules of adventure offerings and camp-wide programs are also included. Hopefully, it will answer many questions you have about this new program. If you have any questions concerning the Camp Is Where Home Is program, please do not hesitate to contact us (contact information provided at the end of this guide). We are here to serve you. We are glad that you will be joining us for this new adventure during the summer of 2020. See you all shortly in your at home base camp! Yours in Scouting, Todd Weidner Director of Camping New Birth of Freedom Council

New Birth of Freedom Council, BSA takes our responsibility for the welfare of the youth very seriously. Every adult working with a Scout must be registered as a Merit Badge Counselor with the BSA and have current Youth Protection Training. Every camp staff member complete currents BSA Youth Protection Training.

Youth Protection Procedures The BSA established “barriers to abuse” to ensure the safety of Scouts which all Scouts and leaders are expected to follow:

• All youth protection policies apply in an online environment. Two-deep leadership applies for online activities and meetings. The ban on one-on-one contact between an adult leader and youth applies to all interactions – including in person, online, web conferences, over the phone, via text, or in any other form.

• All aspects of the Scouting program are open to observation by parents and guardians. • We will be using a combination Google Classroom and Zoom as our primary communication

platforms. • Please review the BSA Digital Privacy and Social Media Guidelines. We all suggest parents

consider reviewing the terms of service, safety and privacy features, and data collection policies of Zoom (https://zoom.us/docs/en-us/privacy-and-security.html).

• Online activities/meetings involving youth are not to be recorded. Call recording is subject to various legal requirements under various U.S. and local state laws, some of which require on a call to consent to recording. The BSA does not authorize the recording of online meetings/activities involving youth.

• Appropriate attire is required for all activities. • All the BSA policies concerning online safety of scouts can be found at:

Cyber Chip

All Scouts participating in Camp Is Where Home Is are highly encouraged to complete their grade-appropriate Cyber Chip before participating in camp. This should take approximately 30-40 minutes. Cyber Chip can be located here: https://www.scouting.org/training/youth-protection/cyber-chip/

Additional online Safety Precautions New Birth of Freedom Council, BSA is committed to the safety of all Scouts. We will use these additional procedures to protect all Scouts while using Zoom. While most Scouts use digital devices responsibly, educating them about the appropriate use of cell phones and cameras is a good safety and privacy measure. To address cyber-safety education, the BSA has introduced the age-and-grade-specific Cyber Chip program, which addresses topics including cyberbullying, cell-phone use, texting, blogging, gaming, and identity theft.

• We will be using unique meeting identification numbers for each session. • Passwords will be utilized for all meetings. • DO NOT publish meeting invitations via public forums or pass along invitation information. • The use of “waiting rooms” will be used to manage letting individuals into meetings. • Only Scouts registered in the class will be admitted to the class from the “waiting room.” • Screen-sharing by non-hosts, private chats, and whiteboards will be disabled. • Staff will remove uninvited guests. • Staff will keep personal information private and not sure a youth’s personal information with

anyone except the youth’s parent or guardian or the unit leader responsible for tracking advancement.

• Staff will not publicly post or display a roster with personal information of Scouts.

Our Camp Is Where Home Is Cub Scout program will operate Sunday evening to Thursday evening, with program taking place Monday through Thursday. We offer adventures for Lion, Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Webelos, and Arrow of Light Scouts. Over the course of the week, each rank will work on four different adventures.

Lion Program For our Lions, adventures and activities will be posted daily. This will allow for the requirements to be completed at the time that works best for each family.

Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Webelos, and Arrow of Light Program Our Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Webelos, and Arrow of Light Scouts will have live instruction every day in the evening. Live instruction will take place with our camp staff and will focus on adventure work. Our goal during this program, is to make sure that everyone has the chance to get outside and explore the outdoors. So, Scouts will be directed in outdoor activities they can do during the day when they are not in class. These outdoor activities will help complete requirements for adventures.

Daily Program Even though our program is condensed into an evening, we still offer and provide the same amount of program as out normal Cub Scout “Camp Is Where Home Is” program. Every evening before and after program, we will post our flag ceremonies for the day. Some days these will be done by our staff and others will be by Scouts from their own home. Virtual Engagements will take place each evening to start off the program. These are optional, but highly recommended. These are fun activities or demonstration facilitate by our staff members to bring to the Scouts program elements they may normally not get when working on adventures. Each evening will close with a camp-wide activity, differing each night. Again, these are optional, but highly recommended. We encourage the Scouts to come together and be with their fellow Scouts from across the country.

Parent/Guardian Support We ask that there be a parent or guardian present, or at least within hear shot, of their scout during the day. This will help allow for things to go more smoothly and to allow parents and guardians to also stay engaged with the program.

Base Camp We highly encourage each scout and/or family to set-up a home Base Camp during the week of their session. Having a Base Camp is a cool way to mix up the normal routine and get everyone outdoors. This Base Camp could be a tent out in the yard, a tent inside the house, or even a homemade fort. Take some time to make it special and unique. This Base Camp can then be the place where they sleep, go to their virtual instruction, and participate in camp-wide activities.

CUB SCOUT PROGRAM

Page 8: The New Birth of Freedom Council Proudly Presents…...New Birth of Freedom Council, BSA is committed to the safety of all Scouts. We will use these additional procedures to protect

The Lion program is still fresh to the scouting world. In the normal camping setting, we cannot offer a Lion Resident Camp, but in these new circumstances, we are able to offer a sweet, new program for all of our Lion Scouts out there. Each evening, materials will be posted for Lions to work on. As they will not be live instruction, you can freely work on them at the time and speed that works best for you. These materials may be instructions, videos, or other links to help guide you through the activities. During their time with us for the week, they will work on four different adventures:

Mountain Lion: Lions live in the outdoors. It is important for the Lion Scout to understand how to take care of himself when in the outdoors and how to be respectful of animals and nature. They should learn the idea that they should take only pictures and leave only footprints.

I’ll Do It Myself: The animal kingdom is made up of many different kinds of animal families. The job of parents is to protect the young until they learn how to take care of themselves. Young animals watch older animals and learn what to do. Taking part in these experiences helps to develop autonomy and independence and to test and try things in a safe environment.

Gizmos and Gadgets: Gadgets are designed to make tasks easier. Think about the difference between a can opener you turn and one that plugs into the wall. Computers are designed to move information around quickly. Some gizmos and gadgets are designed just for fun, like games and apps. They all start with moving parts. Can you make a gadget?

Ready, Set, Grow: The lion is always on the hunt for food.; he has to spend much of his time looking for something to eat. We need food as well so we can grow big and strong. Real lions can’t grow a garden, but Lion Scouts can! When the Lion Scout learns basic gardening skills, he is learning a valuable way to grow his own food. He is also developing a connection and seeing the importance of the natural world.

Welcome to a fun and exciting summer of Cub Scouting, Tiger! You’ll go on adventures, exploring the world around you with other Tigers from far away. You will play games, make fun things, learn about wildlife, and spend time outdoors. You’ll even earn awards while having all this fun!

My Tiger Jungle: Maybe you live in the city. Maybe you live in the country. Or maybe you live in between. No matter where you live, you will find amazing bugs, birds, and animals nearby. Some are big, and some are tiny. Sometimes they have homes we can see, like birds’ nests. Other times their homes are hidden. But they all have a place in the worlds, just like your do. In this adventure, we will discover bug, birds, and animals near you. We will build a house for our bird neighbors. And we will plant a tree or outdoor plant to make a home for other wild creatures. You will also go for the world’s shortest hike!

Tigers in the Wild: You are about to go on a hike. What should you take along? Water is always a good idea, but what else? What if you see some animal tracks along the way? How can you tell if a mountain lion or a squirrel made them? What kinds of trees are around you? On this adventure, you will learn how to be a Tiger in the wild!

Curiosity, Intrigue, and Magical Mysteries: Do you wonder how magicians do tricks? Can you spell your name using your hands? Can you read your name with your eyes closed? Can you turn a glass of water upside down without getting wet? Do you dream of being a spy? In this adventure, you will practice magic tricks for a show. You will also learn how to create secret codes. So get your Tiger stipes moving, and let’s solve some cool mysteries!

Sky is the Limit: At night, the sky twinkles with stars, planets, and other heavenly bodies. In this adventure, you will discover the wonders of the night sky. You also will learn about the tools used by explorers and stargazers to see the stars and planets. You will even get to imagine your own stories about the stars and create a night sky inside your home. The universe is waiting for you, Tiger!

Page 10: The New Birth of Freedom Council Proudly Presents…...New Birth of Freedom Council, BSA is committed to the safety of all Scouts. We will use these additional procedures to protect

Welcome to a fun and exciting summer of Cub Scouting, Wolf! You’ll go on adventures, exploring the world around you with other Wolves from far away. You will play games, make fun things, learn about wildlife, and spend time outdoors. You’ll even earn awards while having all this fun!

Paws on the Path: Exploring far-away mountains. Traveling through deep, dark jungles. Crossing hot, dry deserts. The adventurers who took these journeys got their start on a short hike, just like the one you are about to take! In this adventure, you will use your Scouting outdoors skills and learn more about the natural world around you. Hike on, Wolf!

Air of the Wolf: Every day you are surrounded by something that you probably never think about. It’s all around you all the time. You need it just like all other living things. It affects the things you do and the games you play. Have your figured out what it is? It’s air! This elective gives you a chance to play with air. This is the air you breathe in and out about 12 to 20 times each minute. It’s the air that lets a baseball pitcher throw a curve ball and the air that runs some tools. It’s the air that runs wind turbines to create a clean power source. In this adventure, you’ll find out how amazing air is! Get ready to try some science investigations, make a paper airplane, and build your own kite.

Digging in the Past: Can you imagine birds the size of airplanes flying over your head? How about animals like one of the largest dinosaurs, Argentinosaurus – 100 tons and 120 feet long – walking through your neighborhood? Can you picture what it would be like to run into a big, bad T. Rex in the woods? Yikes! Dinosaurs and other giant creatures lived and died out millions of years ago, so thankfully they won’t be running by your home anytime soon! Paleontologists study dinosaur bones and fossils to learn more about their habits, the food they ate, and their size. During this adventure, you will match dinosaurs to their names, and you’ll use your imagination to create your own dinosaur.

Germs Alive: In this adventure, you’ll get to explore how to keep your body healthy. Why is it important to wash your hands? Why is the slimy mucus in your nose (yep, snot) important to your health? What happens if you sneeze into the air instead of the bend in your elbow? How does keeping your room clean help keep you healthy? We will explore all of these questions while we journey through the yucky world of germs!

Page 11: The New Birth of Freedom Council Proudly Presents…...New Birth of Freedom Council, BSA is committed to the safety of all Scouts. We will use these additional procedures to protect

Welcome to a fun and exciting summer of Cub Scouting, Bear! You’ll go on adventures, exploring the world around you with other Bears from far away. You will play games, make fun things, learn about wildlife, and spend time outdoors. You’ll even earn awards while having all this fun!

Beat of the Drum: Most Americans have ancestors who came here from other parts of the world. But American Indians have always been here – or at least they’ve been here since around 12,000 B.C., which is a long, long time ago. American Indian culture is an important part of our county’s traditions. In this adventure, you will learn about American Indian tribes in your area and about customs like crafts, music, and dancing. You’ll also get a chance to make some of these traditions your own.

Forensics: Everywhere you go, you leave behind clues: fingerprints, on your juice glass, DNA on your toothbrush, bits of fabric on your favorite chair, and footprints in your yard. Criminals leave behind clues, too. Forensic scientists study those clues to help law enforcement officers solve crimes. Forensics is all about using science to answer questions about crimes (and other things that have happened). In this adventure, you will get to practice some of the skills of a forensic scientist. You will analyze a fingerprint, a footprint, the contents of ink, and some mysterious white powder. So grab your magnifying glass, and start detecting!

Make it Move: There are lots of ways to do just about anything. Let’s say you wanted to put a ball in a cup. The easy way would be to drop it in with your hand. But imagine this solution: You knock over a row of dominos. The last domino bumps into a marble. The marble rolls off a ledge into a bucket that’s attached to a pulley. The bucket whizzes down onto a seesaw, causing it to tip. The motion launched a ball from a small cup on the other end of the seesaw into a second larger cup, which is in just the right place to catch the ball. Silly? Yes. Fun? Of course! In this adventure, you’ll use your imagination to dream up machines like that. You’ll also learn about some important science concepts that make both silly and serious machines work. So put your brain in gear and get ready to make it move!

Super Science: Have you ever wondered why the sky is blue or how gravity works or what makes a rainbow? Scientist wonder about those things, too. Then, they figure out the answers using experiments. Some of those experiments are really fun because they use stuff that is gooey, oozy, splashy, and splashy – just the king of stuff Bear Scouts enjoy! In this adventure, you’ll get to do some science projects that are a little bit messy and really amazing. So put on your lab coat, and get ready to do some super science!

Page 12: The New Birth of Freedom Council Proudly Presents…...New Birth of Freedom Council, BSA is committed to the safety of all Scouts. We will use these additional procedures to protect

You’re a Webelos Scout – one of the older Scouts in the pack! Everything in the Webelos program is more challenging that the activities the younger Scouts in the pack do. You’ll earn adventure pins only Webelos Scouts can wear. At the same time, you’ll be getting ready to join a Scout troop!

First Responder: In this adventure, you will put the Scout motto, “Be Prepared,” into action by learning about first aid. You’ll have the chance to build your own first-aid kit or make emergency plans for your home or den meeting location. You can even learn how professional first responders help keep you safe. By the time you finish this adventure, you should be ready to act if you are first on the scene when an emergency happens.

Webelos Walkabout: Hiking is walking with a purpose. It is great exercise and a fun activity to do with your den or family. In the Webelos Walkabout adventure, you’ll learn how to prepare for a hike, what you should bring along, and what you should do if there is an emergency.

Adventures in Science: Science is all about asking questions like “What is it?” “How does it work?” and “How did it come to be that way?” I Adventures in Science, you will discover how scientists answer those questions and what we can learn as we try to answer our own questions. Best of all, you’ll get to do wat real scientist do: design and perform experiments. Along the way, you’ll learn about physics, chemistry, astronomy, plant science, and more. Grab your notebook, and let’s get started!

Into the Woods: Trees and plants play important toles in nature. In this adventure, you will get to learn about the plants and trees in your community by exploring your area on a walk or visit to a local nature center, tree farm, or park. If you’ve ever stood beneath a towering redwood or enjoyed the colors of fall leaves or watched pine trees swaying in the wind, you know that trees and plants are beautiful. But they are also important to live on Earth. As you go into the woods in this adventure you’ll learn what trees and plants do for us and for animals and why taking care of them is important to our planet’s well-being.

Arrow of Light is the highest rank in Cub Scouting. Set your sights on it now. You’ll wear your Arrow of Light rank badge below the left pocket on your uniform shirt. It is the only badge from Cub Scouting that may continue to be worn on your uniform after your join a troop. By the time you’ve earned the Arrow of Light rank, you’ll have gained knowledge and skills in a lot of subject areas, and you’ll know a lot about being in a Scout troop!

Outdoor Adventurer: There’s nothing like the great outdoors! In this adventure, you will get the chance to plan and participate in a campout or other outdoor activity. You’ll learn how to be prepared for extreme weather events, and you’ll also demonstrate how to leave no trace when you’re outdoors.

Scouting Adventure: The Scouting Adventure is all about what happens when you leave your Webelos den and join a troop. In this adventure, you’ll learn about things like the Scout slogan and the patrol method. You’ll find out about merit badges and ranks, and then you’ll visit a troop meeting. Best of all, you’ll go along with a troop on an outdoor activity.

Adventures in Science: Science is all about asking questions like “What is it?” “How does it work?” and “How did it come to be that way?” I Adventures in Science, you will discover how scientists answer those questions and what we can learn as we try to answer our own questions. Following our program, much like normal summer camp, there will be a camp-wide evening program. These programs differ evening to evening and are designed to give the Scouts a fun, enjoyable way to end their day. Special instructions for each evening program will be provided when you start your session. Yo-Yo Preview Adventure: On Monday night, all of the scouts will be broken up by rank and will be able to participate in a bonus adventure, the Yo-Yo Preview Adventure. At the moment, it is still just a preview adventure, but Scouts are still able to earn it. There are different requirements for each rank, which will be facilitated by the staff.

Rank Night: Tuesday evening will be filled with fun and adventure with your fellow scouts. Again, all of the scouts will be split up by their rank. There will then be a special program put on for each different adventure. Some of the programs will help fulfill requirements while others are simply just fun.

Scavenger Hunt: Helping to get everyone moving and out and about, scouts will be able to participate in a camp-wide scavenger hunt. This will get them looking for things around the house, in their books, and even in the material they have been given during the virtual program.

Camper’s Campfire: We cannot have a camp session without getting all of the scouts together to perform their favorite song, skit, or cheer. As we will all be participating in camp remotely, you will be able to record and submit your song, skit, or cheer to be compiled and shared at the end of the day.

Camp-Wide Program

Page 15: The New Birth of Freedom Council Proudly Presents…...New Birth of Freedom Council, BSA is committed to the safety of all Scouts. We will use these additional procedures to protect

1. If I have any questions, who do I reach out to?

If you have any questions related to program, feel free to send any questions you have to [email protected]. If you have any questions about registration reach out to [email protected].

2. Are Lions able to participate in the program?

Absolutely! The national office has extended the time frame to work on requirements for their current rank until July 31st, so current Lions are able to participate in the program. As it is not the summer, recruiting for next year’s Lions is also starting, so as long as they are a registered Scout they will be able to participate in the program as a new Lion?

3. Do I have to be a part of the New Birth of Freedom Council to participate?

You do not. Our summer program is open to any Cub Scout across the country that is a registered Scout and wanting to participate in the program.

4. How many people will be in each class?

We currently have a cap size of 75 scouts per rank per week. Depending on the number of registrations and the number of staff, this may be increased. There will be multiple staff with each rank, allowing for there to be smaller class sizes and allow for an easier work environment.

5. What materials will I need to get to be able to complete requirements?

A “packing list” will be posted and sent to you prior to your session starting. This list will be broken up by rank and adventure and will break down everything you will need to successfully complete each adventure.

6. What are the Daily Virtual Engagements?

These will be different activities put on by the various staff. There will be different virtual engagements each day. Scouts can pick and choose what they would like to do or view. For example, one day there may be some science demonstrations put on by our STEM staff and a nature hike provided by our nature staff, while another day may be meeting with a first responder and watching the staff participate in a goofy challenge.

7. Will any camping nights I complete during the session count?

A new policy has been created by the BSA for camping nights during COVID-19. To see if you nights will count and how many nights you will be able to count check out https://www.scouting.org/coronavirus/covid-19-faq/.
