sought to practice their religion as they saw fit.

Puritans and SeparatistsIn England, all people were required to follow

the rules of the Church of EnglandPuritans- they argued that the Church Of

England should be “ purified” by getting rid of all the Catholic practices.

Separatists-a person who refused to accept the authority of the Church of England. They believed that the church should only perform Baptism and Communion

Separatists FleeSeparatists fled to the Netherlands, but felt

their children were forgetting English customs, so they decided to go to North America

Pilgrims- Separatists that founded the Plymouth Colony

The MayflowerSeptember 1620, 41

Pilgrims(Separatists) boarded the Mayflower, and set sail for Virginia.

Bad weather and mistakes by the ship’s captain caused them to land in Plymouth Massachusetts.

Since they were outside Virginia territory, the Pilgrims decided to sign the Mayflower Compact before they left the ship-an agreement to set up the colony’s first government.

Colonists meet Native AmericansMassassoit(leader of the

Wampanoag) visited Plymouth with Squanto and helped the colonists survive the winter by teaching them how to rake clams, and grow pumpkins and corn, and where to hunt deer and beaver.

In the Fall, the colonists and the Wampanoag gathered to celebrate the colonist’s first harvest, which became known as Thanksgiving

The “ Great Migration”Some Puritans felt they needed to leave

England to purify their faith.In 1628, the first group of Puritans came to

Massachusetts. Over the next 10 years, 20,000 Puritans left England and came to Massachusetts in what became known as the “ Great Migration”

The Massachusetts Bay ColonyThe Puritans settled in a harbor that they

named Boston. The Puritans came well prepared, were

better educated, and wealthier than the Pilgrims.

They sailed in March so they had time to plant crops

They selected John Winthrop as their governor before leaving England.

In 1691, the Plymouth colony and the Massachusetts Bay colony united as Massachusetts

The New England WayThe Puritan congregation was their

government.By law, everyone had to attend church.The New England Way- emphasized duty,

godliness, hard work, and honesty.Puritan Law required that all children learn

how to read, in order to read the Bible.

Intolerance Leads to New ColoniesRoger Williams believed in

separating church and government affairs.

He was banned from the Massachusetts Bay Colony, so he and a few followers moved south and formed a settlement called Providence.

Anne Hutchinson was banned and formed Portsmouth

Portsmouth and Providence eventually formed the colony of Rhode Island

ConnecticutFounded by people who disagreed with

Puritan ruleThomas Hooker led the formation of

ConnecticutHe believed men of all religions should be

allowed to take part in the government

New HampshireFormed in 1679 by people who sought more

freedom and better farmland. They hoped for better fishing and fur trade

Trade and the start of SlaveryNew England land was hilly and rocky, with

thick forests.The climate was very cold, and the

surrounding waters were full of fish. Contained several good harbors for ships to

load and unload goods. Triangular Trade-triangle-shaped trade

routes among the colonies, the West Indies, Africa, and Europe.

Triangular Trade
