THE COLLECT - Proper 21 (Page 179 BCP) O God, you declare your almighty power chiefly in showing mercy and pity: Grant us the fullness of your grace, that we, running to obtain your promises, may become partakers of your heavenly treasure; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. angels and mortals: Mercifully grant that, as your holy angels always serve and worship

REFLECTION FIRST LESSON: In the Old Testament lesson the Lord insists that

individuals are responsible for their own sins and that people must now repent, no

longer blaming their troubles on the sins of their parents.

The word of the Lord came to me again: “What do you mean by repeating this proverb concerning the land of Israel, ‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge’? As I live, says the Lord God, this proverb shall no more be used by you in Israel. Behold, all souls are mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is mine: the souls that sins shall die. Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Hear now, O house of Israel: Is my way not just? Is it not your ways that are not just? When a righteous man turns away from his righteousness and commits iniquity, he shall die for it; for the iniquity which he has committed he shall die. Again, when a wicked man turns away from the wickedness he has committed and does what is lawful and right, he shall save his life. Because he considered and turned away from all the transgressions which he has committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die. Yet the house of Israel says, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ O house of Israel, are my ways not just? Is it not your ways that are not just? expression of trust in the Lord.

Lead me forth in thy truth, and learn me : for thou art the God of my salvation; in thee hath been my hope all the day long. 5. Call to remembrance, O Lord, thy tender mercies : and thy loving-kindnesses, which have been ever of old. 6. O remember not the sins and offences of my youth : but according to thy mercy think thou upon me, O Lord, for thy goodness. 7. REFLECTION SECOND LESSON: In this reading Paul bids the new disciples to be of

one mind in love, knowing how Christ Jesus accepts the condition of a servant and was

obedient to the point of death. We now confess him as Lord and are called to an

obedient working out of our faith.

If there is any encouragement in Christ, any incentive of love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfishness or conceit, but in humility count others better than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which you have in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a ser-vant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form he humbled him-self and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for God is at work in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.

REFLECTION THE GOSPEL: In the Gospel Jesus tells a parable of two sons who

obeyed their father differently, and he indicated that it is the same with those who are

apparently obedient and disobedient in their age. Both John the Baptist and Jesus

offered their message of repentance and the hope of the reign of God to all. It was the

religious outcasts who most genuinely responded. Then and now it is not a popular idea

to suggest that such persons have priority over those who are established in their

religion. Action is the test of obedience.

Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you. For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the harlots believed him; and even when you saw it, you did not afterward repent and believe him.”

Bidding Prayer

Let us pray that the will of God shall be obeyed in the Church and in the world.

Grant that the members of the Church, knowing the source of all power and enabling true authority, may humbly obey and cheerfully serve in their various callings…Keep us faithful in work and worship, that God’s will may be done.

Look with pity upon the world where stubborn hearts turn away from the truth and refuse its challenge…May there be integrity in keeping promises and agreements wherever they are made, between nations or between individuals.

Keep us faithful in our promises and honest in our dealings…Give us grace to spread the word of God to our families, our friends and neighbours, and those with whom we work.

Have compassion on all who feel betrayed by those they have trusted…Keep them from resentment and help them to heal their relationships…Come to those who know that they have failed in love and duty, and show them the way of return.

We pray for the departed who have passed through this world, sometimes in obedience and sometimes in rebellion…With all offences and pardoned, may they enter into the joy of the Lord who first called them to his service.

That our prayers may be the prayers of faithful children, we offer them in the name of Christ the Son of God. Amen.
