Head of State Senior General Than Shwegave guidance that as the MPF is taking respon-sibility for ensuring community peace and stabil-ity and prevalence of law and order, it is neces-sary to discharge the respective tasks dutifully.As the people are citizens of the independentnation, the policemen are to protect them in linewith the laws and it should not practise therelationship of master and servant. Meanwhile,the MPF is to be equipped with the correctthought, concept, form and content in accord-ance with the independent country, and it is toforge the spirit of adoring the State and thepeople while discharging duties with correct con-cept and belief.

In the time of the Tatmadaw Governmentthe Committee for Reforming Management Sys-tem of Myanmar Police Force was formed with16 persons on 28 January 1994. The committeeundertook the improvement of the MPF both inform and content.

Being a member of ASEAN Police Force,the MPF managed to save many victims intransnational crimes such as terrorism, traffick-ing in narcotic drugs, money laundering, traf-ficking in persons, arms smuggling and othercrimes related to economy and computer.

It is incumbent upon all the MPF membersto be dutiful and united in ensuring prevalence oflaw and order and to be loyal to the State and thepeople while trying hard to become the skillfulpolice members on whom the people can rely.

BAGHDAD, 5 Oct—A fire caused by a fuel tanker truck at the entrance of Bagh-dad airport has been under control after an hour of traffic halting, an Iraqi securitystatement said.

The fire which broke out in the morning in a fuel tanker was caused by anelectrical short-circuit in the truck due to negligence of one of the truck driver,said a statement by the Baghdad Operations Command.

It said the fire which occurred near the first checkpoint on the main road toBaghdad International Airport is now under control, leaving the tanker truck andthree other vehicles totally charred.

The incident which blocked the main entrance to the airport prompted theairport authorities to suspend flights and vehicle traffic for about an hour, it said.

JAKARTA, 5 Oct — A latest HSBC Indonesia sur-vey showed on Monday that China is ranked the topin favourite trade partner list of Indonesian business-men in the next three month.

According to the survey conducted by HSBC-hiredsurvey firm TNS from August to September 2009, of0-200 level of trade confidence index points, in which200 represents the highest level, Chinese mainlandmarket obtained the highest 121 points in the bank’sglobal survey.

Indonesian market stood second at 120 points, fol-lowed by United Arab Emirates (UAE) market at 118points.

Meanwhile, 59 percent of 300 Indonesian respond-ents saw positive trend of global economic growth inthe next three months.

They also ranked China and China’s Hong Kongas most promising trade areas in the period, the sur-vey said.

KUALA LUMPUR, 5 Oct—The Malaysian MaritimeEnforcement Agency has arrested a gang of pirates inan early-morning operation in southern Malaysia, lo-cal newspaper The Star reported on Monday.

The agency intercepted a suspicious fishing boatabout seven nautical miles from Tanjung Tohor, a portin southern Malaysia’s Johor State, at 4 am on Sun-day, and detained six fishermen aboard, according tothe report.

A 5-year-old pet dog rescued its mas-ter, a 70-year-old woman, after she suf-fered a major heart attack in her home.

The dog, kept by a family in Anshan,Liaoning Province, heard the sound ofheavy breathing from the grandmother’sroom one night and hurried to her aidewhere she was seen with her hands overher chest , sweating profusely but unableto speak a word.

The dog then ran throughout thehouse, barking loudly at other familymembers and scratching at doors untilsomeone woke up and administered thegrandmother medicine.

caped from a northern New Jersey slaugh-terhouse dragged officers with a lasso downa street and ran 10 blocks before being cap-tured and sedated. Chief John DeCando,spokesman for Paterson Police’s animalcontrol division, says the bull was beingunloaded at ENA Meat Packing Inc when

it broke loose just before 8:30 am on Mon-day.

Police tried to corral the bull by lasso-ing a rope around the animal’s neck, but itdragged officers down the street instead.

INSHAS, 5 Oct — Ahmed Mansur, like many farm-ers, has long thrived on Egypt’s famed “white gold”cotton; but with prices uncertain and production costssoaring he is more and more inclined to go “green.”

“Fruit and vegetables make money,” said Mansur,who owns about a hectare (2.5 acres) of land in Inshas,a village northwest of Cairo. Until last year he de-voted his farming efforts exclusively to producingcotton. If you have been toShanghai, you will noticethat the whole city looksno different from NewYork City or Japan. Thewhole downtown area ofShanghai is packed withskyscrapers and high-risebuildings. The functionallogic and aesthetic com-position conveyed inShanghai buildings aresimilar to those of build-ings of highly industrial-ized countries. Today,growing foreign influ-ences, such as copy-cattowers, are diminishingthe traditional architecturein Shanghai, and the ar-chitects are trying theirbest to preserve its localidentity by cooperatingbetween Western valuesand Chinese elements.

In Shanghai archi-tectural history, the mostpopular styles were a sin-gle detached house with acourtyard, terrace hous-ing with gardens, and vil-las and linear blocks.Shanghai architecture

kept the same serial struc-ture and all buildings faceone way: South. Such fea-tures are very importantbecause the Chinese be-lieve they bode well bysymbolizing the sun's ze-nith or the highest point,which is an important prin-ciple of the ancient cul-tural practice called FengShui. Later, these tradi-tional styles were influ-enced by foreign countriesmainly after the Chineselost the Opium War in1843. Those successivemunicipal governments in-cluding the British, theFrench, and Americans,impacted the city by con-structing and reforming itin different styles.

For well over a cen-tury, an architectural formhas been developing inShanghai mainly becauseof rapid and drastic urbani-zation and modernization.The central areas of Shang-hai were extensivelycleared to make way forlarge, multi-functional

buildings and subways inthe late 1980s and early1990s. Chinese architectswere caught up in theShanghai building boom.They had to rush the designprocess, so they just addeda dab of individual flavor toa standard design. This iswhy old hotels and build-ings in Shanghai are uncan-nily similar. Graves Neri,

an American architect, re-calls the situation at thattime: "Architects (were not)paid, buildings changed,designs copied. You really(had) no protection here.China (was) a cowboyplace." That kind of situa-tion led to real estate specu-lation on a huge scale andresulted in the disappear-ance of certain values ofChinese architecture.

The "Design Revolu-tion" seems to have takenplace in Shanghai around1995. Enterprises were en-tertaining the psychologi-cal view that the biggertheir building, the morepowerful they would ap-pear. Shanghai's ambitionto impress the world withits buildings also makesthe city crazy about thearchitectural style. VonGerkan, founder of Ham-burg Company, com-mented on the way theShanghainese hire archi-tects to build high-risebuildings. He noted, "They(Shanghainese) gave us noinstruction. They just toldus, 'Give us ideas for aplace like nowhere else inthe world.' " The freedomwith styles and motifs com-bined with the use of mate-rials helped architects todraw inspirations from for-eign cultures.

Liu, an Ameri-can architect form a Shang-hai Family, claims: "TheChinese want big, andmodern. They really haveno taste." Since Shanghaiis a mixture of various de-signs, drawing from everymodel and every conceiv-able style, we can find va-lidity in Liu's claim. While the urban de-velopment is dramatic withmany memorable build-ings, Shanghai hosts manydesign competitions to feedthe high demand of futurebuildings. Because of itsopenness to other foreignstyles and architecture,many overseas architec-tural firms are taking partin these contests to get com-missions for their masterplans. Contributing to thegrowth of Shanghai, somemajor buildings with out-standing designs by the for-eign architectural firms in-clude the World FinancialCenter, the Museum of Sci-

ence and Technology, theJin Mao Building, and theOriental Arts Center. TheWorld Financial Center,an unfinished building, iscontroversial because ahole in the top of thebuilding is perceived asthe rising sun portrayedin the Japanese nationalflag and the height of thebuilding attempts to gain"the world's tallest build-ing" title. The Museumof Science and Technol-ogy, designed by anAmerican firm, featuresthe spiral form of thestructure, which evokesthe idea of the revolvinguniverse and Shanghai'scontribution to the ad-vancement of technol-ogy. The soaring of theJin Mao Building com-bines a metal and glassskin, bearing the generalshape of a pagodaadorned with multipleascending roofs. The Ori-ental Arts Center projectis elegant in the form of amagnolia blossom withthe curvilinear volumesof translucent and opaqueglass and metals. Fromthese examples, we cansee how the foreign ar-chitects are incorporatingthe Chinese features bycorrelating between thebuildings and the tradi-tions.

When asked if he hadgrown paddy in the past,he said, “We had to relyon rainwater to grow peasand sesame, let alonepaddy. We did not getenough water for ourfarms, so the per acreyields of crops were verylow. But, now due toTanyaung River WaterPumping Station, we cangrow crops all year round,and we can boost per acreyields of peas, sesame andother crops.”

Farmer U Naing Winsaid, “I am from SihsweVillage. That is the farm

our parents inherited me.They grew groundnut,sesame and pigeon pea. In2003 in which the stationbegan to supply water, Itried growing monsoonpaddy, and per acre yieldwas very satisfactory. Fromthat time on, I have grownboth monsoon and summerpaddy every year. This year,I grow five acres ofManawthukha strain

muscle exercises can help manage urinary incontinencein older women.

The study finds improvement reported by 83 per-cent of the women who underwent a supervised chair-based six-weeklong exercise programme focused onidentifying, isolating and strengthening muscles thatsupport the pelvic area — the transversus abdominus,the corset-like swath of muscles that wraps around theabdomen; the multifidus, which extends along the backof the trunk; and the pelvic floor muscles, which forma sling to hold up internal organs like the bladder.

No statistically significant improvements were re-ported by women in the control group who receivedone session of educational basics and no supervisedexercises. “Urinary incontinence can take a very realemotional and social toll,” lead author Sheila Dugan ofRush University Medical Center in Chicago said in astatement. “Many treatment options exist, but strength-ening the pelvic floor muscles, as our study has shown,can be very effective even for older women.”

Hospitalists may reduce time in hospitalsCHICAGO, 5 Oct—High-

risk surgery patients expe-rienced shorter hospitalstays when seen byinternists trained in manag-ing medical complications,US researchers found.

Lead author Dr MichaelPinzur, a professor atLoyola University ChicagoStritch School of Medicine,and colleagues tracked 86high-risk surgical patientswho were co-managed byhospitalists — physicianswho care for the patient inplace of the patient’s pri-mary care physician whilethe patient is in a hospital.The hospitalist coordinatesand oversees care of the pa-tient’s medical problems,and is the contact person forthe family.

The researchers calcu-lated the ratio of how longa patient stayed comparedwith how long such a pa-

tient would be expected tostay at a major teachinghospital. A ratio lower than1.0 means the patient had ashorter-than-expected stay,Pinzur said.

Before the co-manage-ment programme of hospi-talists and surgeons, pa-tients had a length-of-stay

ratio of 0.86. After the pro-gramme began, the ratiodropped to 0.69.

The study, published inthe journal Orthopedics,found hospitalist patientsstayed an average of 3.8days, compared with an ex-pected stay of 5.5 days.

Vietnam confirms two moredeaths of A/H1N1 influenza

HANOI, 5 Oct—Vietnam’s health authorities con-firmed on Monday two women in southern provinceof Ca Mau died of A/H1N1 influenza, raising the to-tal number of deaths in the country to 18.

One patient, 25, was 24 weeks pregnant. She wasadmitted to the Ca Mau Childbirth Hospital on 22 Sept.with stomachache, fever and difficulty in breathing,according to a report on the ministry’s website.

As the patient showed flu-like symptoms, doctorsdecided to transfer her on the same day to Ca MauGeneral Hospital to treat her as a A/H1N1 patient. Thewoman died on 28 Sept. Her sample was tested posi-tive for the A/H1N1 influenza.

Another patient was a 47-year-old woman. Shestarted showing flu-like symptoms on 24 Sept, saidthe ministry. The woman was admitted to a district-level hospital for treatment on 27 Sept. She died on30 Sept. Her sample was found positive with theA/H1N1 influenza.

Turkey to invest $450 mln inoil exploration in Black Sea

ANKARA, 5 Oct—Turkey’s Energy Minister TanerYildiz said on Monday that Turkey would make aninvestment of around 450 million U.S. dollars in oilexploration in the Black Sea, the semi-officialAnatolia news agency reported.

Yildiz said a giant offshore oil platform will setoff from Norway this month and is expected toarrive in Turkey’s northern coast in mid-December.

He said the oil exploration work will belaunched in the Black Sea as part of the cooperationwith Brazil’s Petrobras.

In April 2009, Turkey’s TPAO and Brazil’sPetrobras, two state-owned petroleum companies,inked an agreement for the exploration of oil in theBlack Sea.

Yildiz said oil drilling work with Petrobras willlast for about two or three years and end up withconsiderable amounts of oil reserves.—Xinhua

Tanyaung River Water Pumping Station in Tanyaung Village-tract, Salin Township.

Salin Township in Minbu District, Magway Divi-sion, is 405 miles from Yangon and 245 miles fromMandalay. A large number of religious edifices suchas pagodas, temples, caves and monasteries and geo-graphical features in Salin Township reveal that itused to be an administrative seat in the time ofMyanmar monarchs.

Salin Township is surrounded by the Ayeyawady

River, and Chauk and Yenangyoung townships in theeast, Sedoktara Township in the west, Pwintbyu Town-ship in the south and Saw and Seikphyu townships inthe north. The township has many plains, but high-lands in its west part.

The township sees plains with large farmlandswhere the Salin Creek flows in the west; and the Mwe,Tharu, Paung and Kantaw creeks, in the south.

By Salin-Sedoktara Road and near the signboardto the township is Wetthe Lake with a diameter ofaround three miles. The whole lake is covered by lotusflowers. I saw many people in their boats collectinglotus leaves and flowers and holiday makers doingactivities on the embankment for recreation.
