The Irrigation Department of the Ministry of Ag-riculture and Irrigation inaugurated Pyaingchaung dam inKyauktaw Township, Rakhine State on 30 March 2007.

With its 29,985 acres feet inflow of water,Pyaingchaung dam can store 25,025 acres feet of waterwhen filled to the brim. The embankment of the dam isof earthen type with a water surface area of 625 acres. The embankment of the dam is 116 feet high and 860feet long.

The emergence of a large number of dams andreservoirs the length and breadth of the nation hascontributed a great deal to improvement of socio-

economic status of the entire national people andregional development. Meanwhile, the increase in theagricultural production can be attributable to fullsupply of irrigation water. That is why the entirenational people are to do their bit in maintaining andsafeguarding those irrigation facilities, and only then, will they be able to make better use of them.

NEW YORK, 22 Nov—Regular exercise may helpkeep teenagers’ bloodpressure in check, regardless of their bodyweight, a new studysuggests.

Researchers found thatamong nearly 1,300Canadian teenagers theyfollowed for five years, declining exercise levelsover time were linked tosmall increases in bloodpressure.

Gains in body fat werealso linked to blood

pressure increases, butexcess weight did notfully account for therelationship betweenexercise and bloodpressure changes —especially in girls.

The implication, theresearchers report in theAmerican Journal ofEpidemiology, is that bothweight and exercise habitsindependently affectteenagers blood pressure.

And that means thatgetting teens off the couchmight help keep their

blood pressure underbetter control, writeKaterina Maximova andcolleagues of McGillUniversity in Montreal.

Hackers leak e-mails, stokeclimate debate

LONDON, 22 Nov—Computer hackers have brokeninto a server at a well-respected climate change researchcentre in Britain and posted hundreds of private e-mailsand documents online — stoking debate over whethersome scientists have overstated the case for man-madeclimate change.

The University of East Anglia, in eastern England, said in a statement on Saturday that the hackers hadentered the server and stolen data at its Climatic ResearchUnit, a leading global research centre on climate change. The university said police are investigating the theft ofthe information, but could not confirm if all the materialsposted online are genuine.

More than a decade of correspondence betweenleading British and US scientists is included in about1,000 e-mails and 3,000 documents posted on Web sitesfollowing the security breach last week.

Some climate change skeptics and bloggers claim theinformation shows scientists have overstated the casefor global warming, and allege the documents containproof that some researchers have attempted to manipulatedata.—Internet

Real Madrid take uninspiringwin over Santander

MADRID, 22 Nov—A goal from Real Madrid striker GonzaloHiguain was enough to give his team all three points at home tostruggling Racing Santander on Saturday night.

Higuain maintained his place in Real Madrid ahead of RaulGonzalez, who once again had to be content with a place among theReal Madrid substitutes.

The game marked the return of former Real Madrid sportingsecretary Miguel Angel Portugal on the Racing dugout.

However, in the first half it was clear that the one training sessionPortugal had been able to hold with his players following hisappointment on Thursday had not been enough to work any majorchanges.—Xinhua

MANCHESTER, 22Nov—Sir Alex Fergusonbelieves ManchesterUnited can take charge ofthe title race if they reachthe New Year in touchwith leaders Chelsea.

Goals from DarrenFletcher, Michael Carrickand Antonio Valenciacompleted a 3-0 victoryfor Ferguson’s side overEverton that kept themwithin five points ofCarlo Ancelotti’s side.

The United managerdeclared himself satisfiedwith his side’sperformance aftercriticising his players forfailing to make the mostof their chances in frontof goal in recent games.

And he maintainsthat if they can reducethe deficit betweenthemselves and Chelseaover the next five weeks, they can step up their titlechallenge during thesecond half of thecampaign.—Internet

LIVERPOOL, 22 Nov—Liverpoolmanager Rafael Benitez brushed asidehis team’s stuttering form to insist thatthey will finish in the top four.

The defiant Spaniard watched fromthe sidelines as Saturday’s 2-2 homedraw with Manchester City left lastseason’s Premier League runners-upwith just one win in 10 games in allcompetitions.

It would have been far worse hadsubstitute Yossi Benayoun not salvageda point with a late equaliser after goalsfrom Emmanuel Adebayor and StephenIreland threatened another dismal dayfor the Merseysiders.

But a bad day from Liverpool goteven worse as Benitez, already missingkey striker Fernando Torres and GlenJohnson through injury, saw Danishdefender Daniel Agger stretchered offwith concussion, while Dutch forwardRyan Babel damaged an ankle.

Yet Benitez is confident his side will

bounce back with a winning run oncehis walking wounded have recovered, and believes Liverpool will still seal aChampions League berth next seasondespite their poor form.

LONDON, 22 Nov—Arsenal managerArsene Wenger refused to blame theabsence of Robin van Persie as his teamfailed to score for the first time thisseason in a 1-0 defeat at Sunderland.

But the evidence of a below-parperformance suggests the loss of theDutch striker for up to six weeks becauseof an ankle injury could be a major

handicap to Arsenal’s title prospects. They are now eight points behind

Chelsea and the leaders’ visit to theEmirates Stadium on Sunday (29November) is looking like a contest theGunners cannot afford to lose.

Wenger howver glossed over thesignificance of van Persie’s absence, preferring to blame slack defendingwhen Darren Bent scored Sunderland’s71st-minute winner.

The Frenchman said: “I don’t wantto focus on an individual. It’s down tothe fact we made a big mistake at acorner. Some of our players were not attheir best and we gave a goal away inthe only situation where Sunderlandwere likely to score — from a set piece.

Shanmange Dam assisting in greening Meiktila PlainArticle and Photos: Khin Maung Than (Sethmu)

Meiktila District inthe upper Myanmar,Mandalay Division is inarid region and thus facesdifficulties in growingcrops in the summer dueto the lack of rainfall. Theregion gets only about 30inches of average rainfallannually. So, a dam wasconstructed in the pastnear Montaing Village,Meiktila Township bydamming Montaingcreek with the aim ofovercoming the difficul-ties and irrigating thefarmlands. But the waterstorage capacity of thedam declined gradually.

Montaing dam per-forms as a modulatingtank for Meiktila Lake.In the time of theTatmadaw government,Shanmange dam wasbuilt by ConstructionUnit-7 of Irrigation De-partment to supply waterto Meiktila Lake and con-tribute to greening ofMeiktila region.

We, Kyemon news

The embankment ofMontaing dam is ofearthen type and it meas-ures 4200 feet long and
