As agricultural industry is the base of therural economy, measures are being taken to be ableto supply water sufficiently for agriculture. Clus-ters of dams and sluice gates have been built region-wise and therefore cultivation of summer andmonsoon paddy as well as multiple and mixed cropshas been thriving.

In addition, as education, health and eco-nomic requirements of the rural people are beingfulfilled, rural areas are developing in parallel withurban areas. More and more basic education schoolbuildings, rural affiliated high schools and self-reliance village libraries have also been built. As aresult, rural youth have better opportunity to seekeducation and broaden the scope of their knowl-edge.

Bridges and inter-village roads are beingconstructed to improve transport development re-gion-wise, to enable rural people to travel from oneplace to another easily and to facilitate trading. Anew gravel road linking Sangyikon andWayarchaung villages in Pathein Township inAyeyawady Division was opened recently. An in-ter-village road linking Bontha, Boatkone and Pyinsivillages in Natogyi Township in Mandalay Divisionwas also opened on 13 October.

New buildings of Dawngankha Basic Educa-tion Middle School in Dimawhso Township in KayahState and of No (2) Basic Education Primary Schoolin Thameintheye model village in Waw Townshipin Bago Division were opened recently. These arepart of the government’s efforts to improve theeducation standard of rural areas.

As the government, regional authorities, so-cial organizations and individual well-wishers havebeen working hard in concert and donating moneyand materials needed for rural development tasks, social and economic standards of rural people arebecoming higher and higher.

BEIJING, 22 Oct —China is undergo-ing unprecedented urbanization, whichhas sharpened social contradictions. To make the country’s urbanizationsustainable, we have to developmodern agriculture, says an article inChangjiang Times.

The latest McKinsey & Companystudy shows about 1 billion peoplewill be living in the country’s urbanareas by 2025, and more than 200 cit-ies will have a population of 1 million

or more. Urbanization, in essence, isthe expansion of urban areas resultingfrom the migration of the agriculturalpopulation. Yet the process is morecomplex than that.

The increasing expansion of bigcities has sharpened social contradic-tions by widening people’s interests, which are related to money andpower. Today’s China fits this modelwell.

BANGKOK, 22 Oct—A review of a trial of a HIVvaccine in Thailand has concluded that it does showreal signs of a protective effect. Scientists announcedlast month that a combination of vaccines gave a31% level of protection in trials among 16,000heterosexuals aged 18-30. Doubts had been raisedabout whether the finding was significant.

But new data published at a conference in Parisindicates that, while small scale, the findings arerobust and statistically significant. However, thescientists say they do not understand what is caus-ing the effect, and it seems to offer less protectionto those most at risk. Despite these drawbacks,Colonel Nelson Michael from the US military HIVresearch programme it is still a small step in theright direction.

He said: “It’s important that people understand thatthis is a scientific advance, a scientific breakthrough.”It is not a public health breakthrough; there is not avaccine that is around the corner.

“We now, after 26 years of trying, believe that wecan go down that road with confidence that wewill be able to develop a vaccine that is globallyeffective.”

Despite their initial joy when the first results fromthe Thai trial were announced, many scientistswere concerned that the protective effect was verysmall.

Food toxin may cause liver cancerLOS ANGELES, 22 Oct —

A toxin produced by moldon grains can cause livercancer for large amount ofconsumption, researchersat the University of Califor-nia, Irvine (UCI) has said.“It’s shocking how pro-foundly these molds canaffect public health,”Sheryl Tsai, associate pro-fessor in biochemistry andpharmaceutical scienceswas quoted as saying by astudy published in the jour-nal Nature on Thursday.

It is the first time scien-tists have discovered whattriggers the toxin to form, which could lead to meth-ods of limiting its produc-

tion. Reports said about4.5 billion people in devel-oping countries are chroni-cally exposed to vastamounts of this toxin, called aflatoxin, which isoften hundreds of timeshigher than safe levels.

In some countries, thecombination of aflatoxinand hepatitis Bvirus expo-sure increases the likeli-hood of liver cancer occur-rence by 60 times, andtoxin-related cancercauses up to 10 percent ofall deaths in those nations.Tsai, graduate studentTyler Korman and under-graduate Oliver Kamari-Bidkorpeh, along with

Johns Hopkins Universityresearchers, jointly discov-ered that a protein calledPT is critical for aflatoxinto form in fungi.

Tsai said protein PT iskey to making the poison. With this knowledge, sci-entists could kill the PTwith drugs, inhibiting themold’s ability to makeaflatoxin. Aflatoxin cancolonize and contaminatenuts and grains before har-vest or during storage. TheUS Food & Drug Admin-istration considers it anunavoidable food con-taminant but sets maxi-mum allowable limits.

Blood protein may predict heartattack but not stroke

WASHINGTON , 22 Oct — High bloodlevels of C-reactive protein (CRP) mayincrease a person’s risk for heart attackand death, but not for stroke, a newstudy has found. The study included2,240 people in New York City whowere 40 or older and stroke-free. At thestart of the study, the participants’ bloodwas checked for levels of CRP (a markerfor inflammation) and their heart attackand stroke risk factors were evaluatedby researchers.

During an average follow-up of eightyears, there were 198 strokes, 156 heart-related events and 586 deaths. Peoplewith CRP levels greater than 3 milli-grams per liter of blood were 70 per-

cent more likely to have a heart attackand 55 percent more likely to die thanthose with CRP levels of 1 milligram perliter or less, the researchers reported inthe 20 Oct print issue of Neurology.

After they took other risk factors intoaccount, the study authors concluded thatCRP levels didn’t influence strokerisk.”The role of this protein in predict-ing risk of stroke has been controversial, although prior studies have found it tobe a marker for predicting risk of heartdisease,” study author Dr MitchellElkind, of Columbia University Medi-cal Center in New York City, said in anews release from the American Acad-emy of Neurology. —Internet
