PERSPECTIVES

Emergence of Steel Plant (Myingyan)expedites use of steel and iron in buildingState infrastructures

Industrial development plays a crucial rolein national development. So, the government isbuilding sound infrastructures to transform thenation into an industrialized one by enlisting thestrengths of natural resources and of the people.

Encouragement is being given to establishindustrial regions and zones and to build a lotmore factories and workshops. And as a result,import-substitute products are pouring out, andhigh-tech factories have emerged in industrialsregions across the nation. No.4 Steel Plant(Myingyan) of Myanmar Economic Corporationunder the Ministry of Defence was opened theother day. Located near Hsakha Village inMyingyan Township, the steel plant will produceover 200,000 tons of steel billets and slabs a yearand later, 400,000 to 500,000 tons.

For the nation to develop in all aspects,sector-wise construction tasks are being carriedout with added momentum. Cement and steelhave become essential materials in building suchinfrastructures as roads, bridges, dams, factoriesand educational and health institutions.

More cement factories are being built tofulfill the requirements of construction work. Some already-built cement factories have startedoperating and there are some more to be openedsoon. Likewise, efforts are being made to improvethe iron and steel industry. Steel plants in Aunglan,Hmawby, Myingyan and Pinpat regions includingYwama Steel Plant are producing iron and steel.

The newly-opened No.4 Steel Plant(Myingyan) will produce iron billets necessaryfor other plants. Semi-finished steel productsand iron billets had to be imported for steelplants in the past. The emergence of Steel Plant(Myingyan) will surely expedite the use of steeland iron in building State infrastructures such asroads, bridges and dams.

Myanmar Tatmadaw formed with reliable, responsible citizensPadaung Than Kywe

In a land, now known as the Union of Myanmar,a tribe, which came into existence millions of yearsago, has developed into more than 100 national ethnicgroups such as Kachin, Kayah, Kayin, Chin, Bamar,Mon, Rakhine and Shan, whose common name isMyanmar. As for Myanmar people, that is, in fact, anational pride. In such a long time, national raceshave been living through thick and thin as a nuclearfamily.

Due to the preservation of fine traditions, na-tional races evolved into a civilized called “Myanmar”with high national prestige and integrity. Myanmarpeople are quick and strong, and systematically reac-tive in times of emergency.

Throughout the history of the nation, nationalraces have remained harmonious in repulsing alienintrusion. So, it has stood tall as a sovereign state.named “The Union of Myanmar” in the globalfamily.

Every country is to be strong enough tosafeguard their independence or sovereignty. So,they are to boost their strength. A weak countrymay be under influence of other countries withhegemony more or less. So, every country has toenhance their economic, political and national de-fence strengths.

A country without economic strength is notresistant to any forms of pressure that is not at thelevel of armed conflict. Economic strength alsocovers enough reserve funds with which a nationcan show significant resilience in times of crises.

In like manner, political strength is necessaryfor a sovereign country to remain an independent, sovereign one. In addition, every citizen has to putnational politics in the fore. They should feel a glow ofpride to be citizens of the nation. They have to cherishand value culture, tradition, historical background andconditions of their mother country. Ethnic groups of anation have to take pride in being citizens of the nation, with a strong sense of self-reliance.

National defence strength is also necessary fora nation. In times of foreign aggression, the entirepeople have to take part in the conflict in whichnations and peoples vie against each other. However,it takes time to an extent to launch national levelactivities. So, the force that is to confront with alienintruders first is the armed force. Therefore, all coun-tries, large and small, form their own armed forces. All countries, irrespective of area and strength, haveto strengthen the capability of their armed forces as

possible as they can.Without armed forces, a nation will surely face

unfair treatment of other countries.Myanmar stood tall with own monarchs, sover-

eignty, and national prestige for thousands of years. But, it lost national unity for a certain period due to thewedge driven among the people by the colonialists. And it fell under alien subjugation for more than 100

years, which was a painful lesson for the people.British colonialists’ invasion of Myanmar in 1824led to the outbreak of three Anglo-Myanmar wars. After the Third Anglo-Myanmar War, the wholenation came under the yoke of the colonialists, followed by loss of independence and dissolution ofMyanmar armed forces.

LUBBOCK, 22 March—Fields of white cotton oncestretched as far as the eyecould see across the fertileMississippi Delta, but nowmany of those acres areflush with green corn stalks.

US cotton productionpeaked in 2005 and hasbeen sliding since as farm-ers switch from growingfiber to food. The reasonsare many: Corn priceshave been strong, and it’smore profitable because ittakes less labour to pro-duce. Corn’s lower pro-duction costs also make it

a less risky investmentthan cotton. Cotton pro-duction dropped about 53percent in the five-stateMid-South region from2005 through 2008 asfarms converted to cornand soybeans. Job lossesfollowed.

Economists estimate forevery three jobs needed toproduce cotton, only one isneeded to grow corn orsoybeans. It’s difficult tosay how many jobs havebeen lost, but the shift isreal, and rural economiesare feeling the effect, said

Darren Hudson, director ofthe Cotton Economics Re-search Institute at TexasTech. Some cotton ginshave closed. Others havebeen dismantled andshipped overseas.

“It’s sort of a permanentloss in that infrastructure, and it’s hard to overcomethat if you go back theother direction,” Hudsonsaid. “It wasn’t the old ginsthat shut down. It was thenew ones because theywere leveraged more,”with much higher debt.

LONDON, 22 March—A new type of armourwould use pulses of elec-trical energy to repel pro-jectiles away from an ar-moured vehicle, Britishscientists say.

Researchers at the De-fence Science and Tech-nology Laboratory, betterknow as “Dstl” and lo-cated at four sites in Eng-land, say it is possible tocorporate material knownas supercapacitors into

armor that would turn avehicle into a kind ofgiant battery, The DailyTelegraph reported.

Dstl is the research anddevelopment arm of theMinistry of Defence.

The report said when athreat from an incomingprojective is detected, the energy in the super-capacitor can be rapidlypushed into the metal plat-ing on the outside of thevehicle. That produces astrong electromagneticfield. The researchers saythis would produce a mo-mentary “force field”which in theory could re-pel incoming projectiles.Although the force fieldwould last for only a frac-tion of a section, correctlytimed it could repel a pro-jectile, such as a rocket-propelled grade, the reportsaid.—Internet
