JERUSALEM, 11 Nov—The Lebanese militant groupHezbollah has significantly expanded its ability tostrike deep into Israel with rockets that can now reachthe Jewish state’s largest cities, and now possessestens of thousands of projectiles, Israel’s army chiefsaid on Tuesday.

The remarks by Maj Gen Gabi Ashkenazi were thefirst official assessment of the guerrilla group’s capa-bilities since Israel seized a ship last week carryingweapons allegedly destined for Hezbollah.

That would put Jerusalem andTel Aviv, as well as Israel’s nuclear reactor in the south-ern desert, within rocket range. Nabil Gholam, juror and nominee, said, “The ten-dencies this year — whilst I was a judge last year in theWorld Architecture Festival — is clear. There is moreconcern about the environment and buildings are be-coming more reasonable to a certain degree. ROME, 11 Nov— Food prices in poor countries thatare net importers of food still remain high despite agood 2009 world cereal production, Food and Agri-culture Organization (FAO) warned in a report issuedon Tuesday.

The good cereal production has little effect on re-ducing the food prices in the nations dependent onfood import, FAO said in its latest Crop Prospect andFood Situation report produced by the organizationevery three months.

“For the world’s poorest people who spend up to80 percent of their household budgets on food, thefood price crisis is not over yet,” an FAO expert said.

“Although international food prices have fallen sig-nificantly since their peaks a couple of years ago, wheat and maize prices strengthened in October andrice export prices are still way above pre-crisis lev-els,” FAO said in the report, noting that 31 poorestcountries which are seriously affected by critical foodinsecurity require emergency assistance.—Xinhua

BEIJING, 11 Nov—Astronomers have found newevidence that supports the existence of a middleweightclass of black holes, not like the either little or big varietyin previous studies, according to media reports Wednesday.

NGC 5408 X-1, the newly found object, is an X-raysource in the NGC 5408 galaxy, 15.8 million light-yearsaway from Earth in the constellation Centaurus.

“Intermediate-mass black holes contain between 100and 10,000 times the sun’s mass,” said Tod Strohmayer,an astrophysicist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Centerin Greenbelt, Maryland.

The new study used the European Space Agency’sorbiting XMM-Newton observatory to observe the blackhole in 2006 and in 2008. It found further proof that thesignal is a medium-sized black hole.

Black hole is infinitely dense and it could trap matterand even light with its gravity. Though astronomers can’tsee it directly, they detect a black hole by its gravitationalpull on other objects, and by the ray it emitted whenmassive things fall into it. NGC 5408 X-1 emits more X-rays than a typical star, but less than supermassive blackholes. And its flickering is about 100 times slower thanthat seen from stellar-mass black holes. Based on this, theresearchers consider it probably a middleweight.—Xinhua

UK starts study onboundaries of using human

DNA in animalsBEIJING, 11 Nov—British scientists on Tuesday be-

gin to study how human DNA could be used in animalexperiments, and to define what the boundaries of suchcontroversial science could be.

Robin Lovell-Badge, a stem cell expert at Britain’sNational Institute for Medical Research, and a mem-ber of the group conducting the study, said there aretwo main types of experiments: altering an animal’sgenes by adding human DNA or replacing a specificanimal sequence with its human counterpart.

The researchers said they are now trying to deter-mine where the line should be drawn on experimentsthat use human material in animals. At the moment, the regulation on how much human DNA can be putinto an animal is vague.

Scientists want to make sure the public is aware ofwhat is happening in laboratories before proceedingfurther. They said they recognized people might benervous about experiments where animals were givenhuman features or brain cells.

“We are trying to work out what is reasonable,” saidMartin Bobrow, chairman of the group conducting thestudy.

Controversy erupted in Britain after scientists an-nounced plans to create human embryos using emptycow and rabbit eggs two years ago.

Rituximab used forGraves’ eye disease

ANN ARBOR, 11 Nov—US researchers report thedrug rituximab helped six patients with Graves’ eyedisease. The study, published in the journal Ophthal-mology, said the drug was used only after the patientsdid not respond to usual treatment.

One of the study researchers, Dr Raymond S Doug-las of the University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Centerin Ann Arbor, said Graves’ eye disease — anautoimmune disease with inflammation and fatty de-posits in the eye muscles and connective tissue aroundthe eye — is more common in women than men.Symptoms include bulging eyes, retracted eyelids, dryeyes, and, in severe cases, loss of vision.

Douglas, who was at the University of California-Los Angeles when he treated the study participants, said while the results from such a small number mustbe viewed with some caution, the substantial benefitsseen in these patients provide good reason to do a large-scale clinical trial.

“These patients had already received the maximumlevel of steroid treatment,” Douglas said in a state-ment. “Treatment with rituximab calmed inflamma-tion, stopped progression of the disease, and saved thepatients from having to undergo surgery.” —Internet

PHILADELPHIA, 11Nov—US scientists say arapid decline in metabolicactivity on a PET scan af-ter radiation for non-smallcell lung cancer suggestsgood local tumor control.

PET scanning, or Posi-tron Emission Tomogra-phy, is an imaging tech-nique that produces a 3-Dimage of the body’s func-tional processes, accordingto Wikipedia. It can alsoprovide an image of tissuemetabolic activity.

In addition, the re-searchers said they alsofound the higher the meta-bolic activity and tumorsize on a PET scan beforetreatment, the more likelya patient is to die from lungcancer. “PET scanning is

an emerging tool of mo-lecular imaging in lungcancer, in contrast to CTscans and MRI scanswhich are anatomicimaging,” said ThomasJefferson University Asso-ciate Professor MariaWerner-Wasik, the study’slead author. “It has becomean important tool in theevaluation of lung cancerstaging and evaluation oftreatment response.”

Werner-Wasik and col-leagues conducted a retro-spective analysis of 50 pa-tients with lung cancerwho received PETimaging before and afterradiation therapy, focusingon the prognostic factorsfor tumor local failure.

That would allowcountries that have lots ofcoal, such as China andthe United States, to cutemissions while using thecheap but polluting fossilfuel. Carbon dioxide fromthe burning of such fuelsis considered the chiefcause of global warming.

Successful rubber farming in Kachin StateArticle: Myint Maung Soe; Photos: Myo Min Thein (Mayangon)

Latex is being collected from rubber plantation near Nyaunggaing Village of Mohnyin Township.

After completion of the test-cultivation period, local growers of Mohnyin District of Kachin Stateearn more income by successfully growing rubberplants.

Indeed, rubber is industrial raw material crop andit will contribute to increasing the income of the nextgeneration in the long run. In the past, rubber wasgrown in Mon State and Taninthayi Division as theregions receive large amount of rainfall. After that, rubber is cultivated on trial basis in Shan and KachinStates with large amount of rainfall. At present, rub-ber can be planted successfully in Mohnyin District ofKachin State.

As the industrialized nations across the world aremanufacturing millions of automobiles annually, therubber demand is high in the world market day by day.The rubber growers will make greater profit in thelong run.

To write bylines on regional development ofKachin State, we, the news crew of Myanma AlinDaily enquired the successful growing of rubber plantsin Mohnyin District.

In an interview, Chairman of Mohnyin Town-ship Peace and Development Council U Zaw MinHan told the news crew, “Farmers in our districthave grown rubber plants since 2000. So far,Mohnyin District planted 4362 acres of rubberplantations up to 2008-2009 cultivation season.Among the rubber farms, rubber latex is beingcollected at some farms that were establishedearlier than others. Rubber entrepreneurs are en-joying fruits of their hard work.”

We visited rubber farms in southern part ofMohnyin along Myitkyina-Shwebo road.

Nyaunggaing, Thayagon and Hsemaing have been themost successful in growing rubber plantations in thetownship. Rubber farms in these villages are over eightyears old and rubber latex is being collected from theplants.
