PERSPECTIVES

Take active part in NewInfluenza A (H1N1)preventive measures

* Oppose those relying on external elements, acting as stooges, holding negative views* Oppose those trying to jeopardize stability of the State and progress of the nation* Oppose foreign nations interfering in internal affairs of the State* Crush all internal and external destructive elements as the common enemy

People’s Desire

Today, New Influenza A (H1N1), anepidemic, has become a global health issue. Itis not deadly if cured effectively in time. If thehighly infectious disease grows into apandemic, it can cost lives and cause economicand social losses. The people are therefore toparticipate in preventive measures againstthe fatal disease.

Since the early February 2010, Chin State,Yangon Division and Shan State have facedhuman cases on New Influenza A (H1N1). So,the Ministry of Health is now taking preventivemeasures such as working in cooperationwith local authorities, giving health education, providing effective treatment to the victims, and monitoring the outbreak.

The flu is a new strain of swine-originH1N1. So, laboratory test is the only means toidentify the infection of the disease. Itssymptoms include high body temperature, running nose, cold, cough, physical pains, headache, easy tiredness, and hard breathe, which are similar to that of other influenzas. So, a person with flu-like symptoms shouldtake medical check-up in nearest clinic, hospital or health centre.

In particular, educative talks about thedisease should be held for the knowledge ofschool-age children, and young people. Afterevery sneeze or cough, a person has to washhis hands thoroughly. And we should avoidgoing to crowded places and wear surgicalmasks as part of prevention.

The people are, therefore, urged to extenda helpful hand with a sense of duty to localadministrative bodies, and health staff in thedisease control and preventive measures.

Edie Russell, who ‘saved her

grandfather’s life’.

After David Russell spent two weeksin a coma, he proved some things areworth waking up for.

Russell finally opened his eyes whenhis wife whispered in his ear that he hadjust become a grandfather for the firsttime, the Daily Mail reported.

Doctors had cautioned Helen Russellthat her 60-year-old husband did nothave a good prognosis, and now againstall odds he is making a full recovery af-ter hearing about the new addition to thefamily.

Russell was induced into a coma twoweeks ago after he fell 12-feet from abarn roof and had to undergo a five-houroperation to remove a blood clot fromhis brain. He was unable to come out ofthe coma after the surgery.

Doctors told Helen Russell that if herhusband did wake up, he would prob-ably have serious brain damage. Butwhen he heard the words, “Come ongranddad you have got to wake up now,”Russell stirred in his hospital bed andwinked at his wife. “The doctors didn’teven think that he would survive theoperation, which was absolutely horrific

news to be given,” Helen Russell said.“When he failed to come out of an in-duced coma they said the best case sce-nario was that he would be brain dam-aged and severely impaired.”

David Russell is expected to makea full recovery, and is currently start-ing rehabilitation. “He’s incrediblyproud and thrilled to be a grandfather,”Helen Russell said.

Little Michael Melton suffers fromhypoplastic left heart syndrome , acondition in which the left side of hisheart is critically underdeveloped.

Time is of the essence for a 3-year-old boy from Utah who was born witha rare and complex congenital heartdefect that has essentially left him withhalf a heart, ABC 4 News reported.

Little Michael Melton suffers fromhypoplastic left heart syndrome – acondition in which the left side of hisheart is critically underdeveloped.

Treatment for this condition involveseither a three-step surgical procedure ora heart transplant, which is exactly whatMichael needs. In order to get himmoved up higher on an organ donor list, his mom, Clarissa Melton, moved to theSalt Lake Valley from her hometown ofVernal, Utah. She’s worried if Michaeldoesn’t get a transplant soon, he coulddie.

“I don’t think you can be prepared,”Melton told the news station. “I try tobe. I know it would definitely be a pos-sibility. It’s like putting a time limit onmy son’s life.” Michael is currently be-ing treated at Primary Children’s Hos-pital in Salt Lake City.

Experts dispute causeof mud volcano

PORONG, 15 Feb—Scientists and drilling experts saythey’re in disagreement about whether a gas explora-tion well triggered a fatal mud volcano in Indonesia.

The world’s biggest mud volcano killed 13 peopleand displaced 30,000 more 29 May, 2006, in the Porongsub-district of Sidoarjo, East Java. Mud from the vol-canic dome destroyed four villages and continues toooze enough to fill 50 Olympic-size swimming poolsevery day, researchers at the University of California,Berkeley, said. The drilling firm Lapindo Brantas hassaid an earthquake centered 174 miles away triggeredthe mud volcano, while an international scientific team, including the California researchers, allege it was causedby improper removal of a drill bit. Both sides presentedtheir findings this week in the journal Marine and Pe-troleum Geology.

“The disaster was caused by pulling the drill stringand drill bit out of the hole while the hole was unsta-ble,” said Richard Davies, director of the Durham En-ergy Institute in England. “This triggered a very large‘kick’ in the well, where there is a large influx of waterand gas from surrounding rock formations that couldnot be controlled.”— Internet

NAIROBI, 15 Feb—Helping the world’ssmallest farms stayabreast of climate changeand competition is key tofeeding the planet’s grow-ing population, scientistsin Kenya said. Small farmers needhelp in understanding andcoping with climatechange, which will altergrowing conditions, insti-tute officials said in arecent issue of Science. They also need help indealing with finite natu-ral resources, includingwater, arable landand fossil fuels neededto produce fuel and ferti-lizer.

Most alarming, how-ever, is that many regionsin the poorest parts of theworld already are beingaggressively farmed andare close to being “tappedout” in terms of capacityfor production, saidMario Herrero, a seniorscientist at the institute.“In most regions of theworld, farming systemsare under intense pres-sure,” Herrero said.

More aid needed for sustainable seafood

LONDON, 15 Feb—Re-searchers in Londonmeasured the cardio-pro-tective potential of cran-berry juice and found itmay help lower bloodpressure and help promoteheart health. Researchersat Queen Mary Universityof London compared thecardio-protective poten-tial of cranberry juice andthat of red wine, cocoaand green tea and foundthat oligomeric pro-cyanidins were present in

regular and light cran-berry juice cocktail. DrRoger Corder of QueenMary University identi-fied oligomeric pro-cyanidins in cranberriesthat can promote a healthyheart by inhibitingEndothelin-1 synthesis —a blood vessel constrictorthat causes heart disease.

“Red wine has long beenassociated with hearthealth, but this new studyshows that cranberry juiceis a very promising alcohol-

free alternative,” Corder, author of “The Red WineDiet,” said in a statement.“We have now identifiedoligomeric procyanidins asthe specific compound incranberries that can boostthe health of blood vessels, helping to prevent bloodvessel constriction — aleading cause of high bloodpressure.” The researchwas published in theJournal of Agriculturaland Food Chemistry.

GAINESVILLE, 15 Feb—A Florida fa-ther who lost his young son to a seriesof preventable hospital medical errorssaid hospitals need to embrace a cultureof listening to parents. Horst Ferrero’s3-year-old son, Sebastian, died in 2007after being administered a fatal dose ofmedication as part of a routine medicaltest. Horst and Luisa Ferrero, foundersof the Sebastian Ferrero Foundation, areleading the effort to build a dedicated,full-service children’s hospital inGainesville.

In an emotional retelling of his storyat the Florida Association of Children’sHospital’s dinner in Gainesville,Ferrero described what he called a “cas-cade of errors” that occurred when hisson was hospitalized. If any member ofthe medical team had responded differ-

ently at any of a number of points alongthe way, his son’s life might have beensaved, Ferrero said.

He urged hospitals to:— Listen to parents. They know their

children best and are speaking on theirbehalf.

— Build a culture that makes safetyeveryone’s responsibility. Double-checking can save lives.

— Treat the “whole” child. Everymember of the medical team must betrained to observe and treat the wholechild, not just focus on their limitedscope of responsibility.

— Don’t treat children as little adults.Make sure staff at every level are trainedand sensitized to the unique protocols as-sociated with treating children.

HIV illness ‘delayed by’ herpesdrug aciclovir

WASHINGTON, 15 Feb — A common treatment forherpes can delay the need for HIV drugs in peoplewith both infections, say US researchers. A study of3,300 patients in Africa found aciclovir reduced therisk of HIV progression by 16%, The Lancet reports.

Although a “modest” effect, the researchers saidthe cheap treatment is a simple way of keeping peo-ple with HIV healthy for longer. One expert said itwas important to note that aciclovir does not seemto make HIV patients less infectious. The research-ers from the University of Washington, Seattle, con-centrated on people infected with HIV-1 - the mostcommon type of infection.

It is known that most people who are infected withHIV-1 are also infected with herpes simplex virustype 2 (HSV2), or genital herpes. Previous studieshave shown that keeping the herpes virus suppressedreduces HIV levels but it was unclear whether thiswould slow down the disease. Those in the trial wereeither given a twice daily dose of aciclovir or adummy pill and then they were monitored for twoyears. At the end of the study, 284 people on aciclovirhad either started taking HIV medication, had a dropin CD4 count suggesting they should be on medica-tion or had died. —Internet

New picture of ancient oceanchemistry argues for

chemically layered waterSCIENCE DAILY, 15 Feb —A research team led by

biogeochemists at the University of California,Riverside has developed a detailed and dynamic three-dimensional model of Earth’s early ocean chemistrythat can significantly advance our understanding ofhow early animal life evolved on the planet.

Working on rock samples from the DoushantuoFormation of South China, one of the oldest fossilbeds and long viewed by paleontologists to be awindow to early animal evolution, the researchteam is the first to show that Earth’s early oceanchemistry during a large portion of the EdiacaranPeriod (635-551 million years ago) was far morecomplex than previously imagined.—InternetA villager passing through thriving sunflower plantation beside Tamadan embankment.

Myanmar, rich in natural and water resources, isagro-based country. All types of crop can be grownif there is land and water. The AgricultureMechanization Department is reclaiming farmlandsas the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation is strivingto provide irrigation water to the farmlands. Damsand reservoirs were constructed to store rain andmountain torrent water. In addition, sinking tubewells were sunk to make use of underground waterand river water pumping projects were built to pursueirrigation water.

Tamadan embankment is being built in YesagyoTownship in Pakokku District of Magway Divisionto store river water while the river water level rises.Myanma Alin news crew recently observed the

construction of Tamadan embankment. There is an old Pegon embankment linking

Yesagyo and Pakokku-Monywa motorway. Its lengthis 7,900 feet, width 21 feet and height 10 feet. Thereis the only motorway providing access to Yesagyo. The motor road is 18 feet wide on the embankment. There are two sluice gates at the embankment; 3 feetx 5 feet wide Pegon sluice gate No (1) and 4 feet x 5feet wide three-door Pegon sluice gate No (2).

While the water level of Chindwin River rises, the river water is supplied to the farmlands throughthe canals. However, farmers faced difficulties oflacking irrigation water every year when the waterlevel of Chindwin River falls.
