Walk test predicts heart-lung healthCLEVELAND, 20 Nov—

Checking the heart rate 1minute after a 6-minutewalk predicts whether apatient with pulmonaryarterial hypertension isgetting worse, USresearchers say.

“Ours is the first studyto show that heart raterecovery at 1 minute ofrest following a 6-minutewalking distance test is a

strong predictor of clinicalworsening in idiopathicpulmonary arterialhypertension patients,” DrOmar A Minai of theCleveland Clinic said in astatement. Clinical worse-ning was defined as death, lung transplantation, hospitalization forworsening pulmonaryhypertension or escalationof pulmonary hyperten-

sion therapy.The study enrolled 75

patients diagnosed withidiopathic pulmonaryarterial hypertension, confirmed by right heartcatheterization. Theirheart rate was recordedat the end of the 6-minutewalking distance test andthen 1 minute aftercompleting the test. Thecutoff value for abnormalheart rate recovery at 1minute following the 6-minute walking distancetest was identified as 16beats. A greater reductionin heart rate after exerciseindicates a better-conditioned heart.

Minai said predictinglong-term prognosis inpatients with pulmonaryarterial hypertension“usually requires analysisof several pieces of datain complicated risk scores.

The researchersanalyzed risk acrossvarious purchasingmethods including buyingfrom a farm’s on-site store, directly from its bulk tankor from a third-partyretailer. “Raw milk fromretailers proved mostdangerous by far. Butwhen it comes to milk, thesafest purchasing decisionyou can make is to buy itpasteurized,” Schukkensaid in a statement.

“Listeria is one of themost virulent and deadlyfood borne pathogens. Ourstudy demonstrates therelative risk various

NASA releases sharpest topographymap of Moon

MOSCOW, 20 Nov—The Lunar ReconnaissanceOrbiter (LRO) collected images of the moon, providing the most detailed topography map of theMoon. NASA released the image, claiming theimages collected provided information about theelevations and depressions within 328-feet-per-pixelaccuracy. Thus this map represents the most accuratemap of the Moon yet. The high-resolution image ofthe Moon’s topography is not only beautiful to lookat, but the information it provides is tremendous. Themap provides information covering 98.2 percent ofthe Moon’s surface. Since the map was created byoverlapping images, there were some regions thatremained in the shadows, thus were unmeasurable.

Scientists will be able to monitor changes in thecrust of the Moon, provide better understanding forcrater mechanics and volcanic features, and helpplan future robotic and human missions to the Moon. The topography map was so sensitive that it was ableto marker where NASA’s Apollo landers were andthe boot prints left behind by moon-walking astronautsbetween 1969 and 1972.—Internet

WASHINGTON, 20 Nov—Two American earthobservation satellites have been targeted by cyberhackers in the past, a report has said.

The report mentions that NASA’s Terra EOSsatellite was targeted in June 2008 and again inOctober 2008.

The June incident resulted in the satellite beinginterfered with for two minutes and the Octoberincident lasted at least nine minutes.

The report noted that the Landsat-7 satelliteoperated by the US Geological Survey wasintercepted in 2007 and 2008, but the entity couldnot achieve the aim to control the satellite.

According to the US-China Economic andSecurity Review Commission report, though it isdifficult to trace the culprit, the act was committedby a country.

The report stresses the serious implications theintrusions could have on the satellite systems, particularly if they were directed against more

sensitive systems such as military orcommunications satellites.

LONDON, 20 Nov — Ateam of engineers claimsto have created the world'slightest material. The sub-stance is made out of tinyhollow metallic tubes ar-ranged into a micro-lat-tice -- a criss-crossing di-agonal pattern with smallopen spaces between thetubes. The researchers saythe material is 100 timeslighter than Styrofoam andhas "extraordinarily highenergy absorption" prop-erties.

Potential uses include

US FDA approves newdrug to treat leukemia

WASHINGTON, 20 Nov— The US Food and DrugAdministration (FDA) onFriday approved Erwinazeto treat patients with acutelymphoblastic leukemia(ALL), who have devel-oped an allergy to E coli

derived asparaginase andpegapargase chemo-therapy drugs used to treatALL.

Acute lymphoblasticleukemia is a type of can-cer in which the bone mar-row makes too manylymphocytes, a type ofwhite blood cell. Whiteblood cells help the bodyfight infection and areformed in the bone mar-row.

Erwinaze is injecteddirectly into the musclethree times a week andworks by breaking downone of the body's proteinbuilding blocks (the aminoacid, asparagine) that ispresent in the blood, andis necessary for the growthof all cells.

Leukemia cells cannotproduce this protein build-ing block.

When a patient istreated with Erwinazethe leukemia cells die.Normal human cells areable to make enough as-paragine for their ownneeds through biosyn-thesis and will not beaffected by treatmentwith Erwinaze.

BUENOS AIRES, 20 Nov — Reachingthe end of the Earth has become almostroutine these days: One hundred yearsafter Norway’s Roald Amundsen beatBritain’s RF Scott to the South Pole, more than 30 teams are trying for it thisyear Some will kite-sail over the vastAntarctic ice and snow. Others will drivein from the coast. A wealthy handfulwill be dropped off one degree north ofthe South Pole, for relatively leisurelyguided treks of about 70 miles to thepole.

But Felicity Aston has been there, done that. Weather and her own consid-erable stamina permitting, the 33-year-old British adventurer will only pause atthe pole long enough to pick up morefood and fuel. Her plan i s to keep onskiing, by herself, all the way to theother side of the frozen continent — andbecome the first person using only mus-cle power to cross Antarctica alone.

If she manages to complete this jour-ney of more than 1,000 miles (1,700kilometers) in late January, she wouldalso set a record for the longest solopolar expedition by a woman, at about

70 days. "This is my first solo expedition, the first time I will have spent this lengthof time without company," she said in aphone interview with the AssociatedPress. "It’s part of the challenge of theexpedition, to see how I’ll cope with it."

Aston spoke from Punta Arenas, Chile, where she was boarding a charter flightFriday after losing a precious week wait-ing for weather to break. From a base inAntarctica, she’ll then take a second planeto her starting point at the foot of theLeverett Glacier, where the Ross Ice Shelfmeets the rocky coast. —Internet
