FRIDAY IN SYDNEY – MESSAGE FROM BRUCE:

On Friday the ARHsport initiative was launched in Sydney by Chris Edwards. Chris is the Ambassador for Australian Rotary Health. Jerra Rotary is the first club to join Chris in his effort to address both physical and mental health. In addition to raising health awareness we hope this program will help change the publics view of Rotary from an aging group of sausage chefs to seeing Rotary as a vibrant community group that engages in a variety of events and activities. If you would like to be part of this transformation please click on the link to learn more. http://portal.clubrunner.ca/9728/SitePage/rotary-health A community that exercises together stays healthy together. History of The Rotary Foundation

At the 1917 convention, outgoing RI President Arch C. Klumph proposed to set up an endowment “for the

purpose of doing good in the world.” In 1928, it was renamed The Rotary Foundation, and it became a distinct

entity within Rotary International.

Growth of the Foundation

In 1929, the Foundation made its first gift of $500 to the International Society for Crippled Children. The

organization, created by Rotarian Edgar F. “Daddy” Allen, later grew into Easter Seals.

When Rotary founder Paul Harris died in 1947, contributions began pouring in to Rotary International, and the

Paul Harris Memorial Fund was created to build the Foundation.

Evolution of Foundation programs

1947: The Foundation established its first program, Fellowships for Advance Study, later known as

Ambassadorial Scholarships.

1965-66: Three programs were launched: Group Study Exchange, Awards for Technical Training, and Grants

for Activities in Keeping with the Objective of The Rotary Foundation, which was later called Matching

Grants.

1978: Rotary introduced the Health, Hunger and Humanity (3-H) Grants. The first 3-H Grant funded a project

to immunize 6 million Philippine children against polio.

1985: The PolioPlus program was launched to eradicate polio worldwide.

1987-88: The first peace forums were held, leading to Rotary Peace Fellowships.

2013: New district, global, and packaged grants enable Rotarians around the world to respond to the world’s

greatest needs.

Since the first donation of $26.50 in 1917, the Foundation has received contributions totaling more than $1

billion.

16 July

Morning was a bit chilly to start but it did warm up. The crowds seemed to be more this week and there were the constant flow of customers past the desk. There did seem to be

lots of people this week! First ATM query was at 7.38 am, followed by another at 7.40 am and the usual several after that! The avocados were back from Astonville and so were the bananas from Coffs Harbour. Cathy and Chris were pin-up girls for an Asian tourist who insisted on taking our photo. The BB Nut man gave Chris $5 for a table – unfortunately she had already done a count and he had TWO!! I challenged him and yes, he had “forgotten”. Watch this one! Purple phone handed to Colin on the gate. He kept it in his pocket and went walkabout. So when the girl come to ask some time later, we had to call him in. She was greatful! OUR HISTORY

In 1998 the Rotary Clubs of Queanbeyan and Queanbeyan West Rotary decided to sponsor a new Rotary Club based in Jerrabomberra. Bill Lilley, John Snedden and Peter Jarvis from Queanbeyan West took on the joint roll of mentoring the development of the new club. (Peter Jarvis went on to become our Charter President).

Advertising for potential members began in March 1998. After a successful campaign, the Club was chartered on 18 November 1998 with 26 members.

Initial meetings were held at the Jerrabomberra General Store—the venue was very good until we grew in numbers. We then moved to the Jerrabomberra Community Centre for a few years, and we now meet at the Jerrabomberra Public School Staff Room, on Thursdays (6.15 for 6.30 pm).

(Charter) President Peter Jarvis ran competitions to select a name for our Club Newsletter and a design for the Club banner. There were some good and some not so good suggestions. Pam Spencer suggested the winning bulletin name ‘Jerraganda’ and David Stevens was the successful designer of our club banner. The design incorporated a goose and the windmill associated with the original entrance to the estate adjacent to the Community Centre. Both the Jerraganda and the Club logo have evolved to keep pace with modern times.

We have always been, and continue to be, a vibrant and fun loving club providing valued community service, both locally and internationally. Our motto is,

“Doing Good and Having Fun”
