Children’s Fund of San Bernardino County has officially launched its 23rd annual Celebration of Giving Campaign to help make the holidays a little brighter for needy children in our County.

Last year, Children’s Fund provided toys and gifts to about 24,000 disadvantaged children through County agencies such as Children and Family Services, Public Health, Behavioral Health, and Pre-School Services.

Unfortunately, our sluggish economy means the need is even greater this year, but Children’s Fund is ratcheting up efforts to fundraise so it can help as many at-risk young people as possible. #ere are several ways to help. Monetary donations to the Celebration of Giving Campaign will be used to purchase toys, clothes, and other gifts for children.

You can also request gift adoption tags from Children’s Fund to hang on your office or family Christmas tree.

Each tag lists the age, gender, and desired gift of a speci"c child so you and others can purchase individualized gifts to donate.

You can also drop off new toys and other gifts suitable for young people, including teenagers, at the San Bernardino County Human Services warehouse located at 1140 E. Cooley Ave. in San Bernardino. #e warehouse is open Monday through Friday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Gifts will be collected until Dec. 16. For more information about the Celebration of Giving Campaign, please call Jane at (909) 379-6025.

Children’s Fund was created in 1986 to call to action private businesses, non-pro"t organizations and concerned citizens to form a public/private partnership to help at-risk, abused, and impoverished children.

Celebration of Giving Campaign Launched

I listened to one of the “Occupy” protestors trying to explain why she was camping out. She rambled on about wanting a free college education, a free car, and free health insurance. In the same breath she managed to express disdain for this country and the freedom she has to obtain an education, drive and make healthy choices.

Shortly after hearing these incoherent and ungracious stammerings, I had a morning of meetings where I heard about a very active community member struck with Lou Gehrig’s disease and losing his ability to speak, a mother of two young children laying paralyzed and in a coma after a stroke, and a six-year-old boy killed in a tragic accident. #at followed a week of learning about the untimely deaths of four Fontana teens in a car accident and a solider from Rancho Cucamonga in Afghanistan.

I am grateful for my health, my life, my family and my freedom. I am mindful that these blessings are temporary because there will come a day when I may be ill, when I will mourn the deaths of more loved ones, when physical realities constrain some of my freedom. Yet that reality does not diminish the gratitude I feel this day, and I believe that even when I am in"rm or sorrowful or depressed, I will still be grateful for those blessings I do enjoy at that time.

In this season of #anksgiving, let us re%ect upon the need for what Cicero called the parent of all virtues—gratitude.

Let us summon gratitude even when things are not going as we would like or even close to what we had planned.

Since #anksgiving is a national day of prayer and gratitude, let us concentrate on our common blessings, even amidst war, recession, and dissatisfaction. We should be grateful for the people who sacri"ced to found this great nation, for those who have struggled, fought and died for the ideals of that founding, and for the potential this nation has to surpass expectations and help the entire world.

We should be thankful for the freedom of speech, assembly and religion that our Constitution guarantees, even—or especially—when people say things we disagree with.

We should give thanks for the opportunities this country’s freedoms and legal protections afford everyone to make themselves successful. We can be upset about certain outcomes or criticize aspects of our system, but ask yourself this: if you lost everything today, is there any other nation that you would want to wake up in tomorrow to begin working on getting back on your feet?

I thank God that I am an American, that there are people willing to serve and "ght for this country and the ideals of liberty, no matter how imperfect each of us as human beings is. I am grateful for the good people of the community who share and express such gratitude, and I wish everyone a safe, healthy and happy #anksgiving.

Reflections on the Virtue of Gratitude

Employee Spotlight: Curbing Parking WoesWhen Redwood Elementary School’s principal contacted my office about a red curb that was causing headaches for parents and school staff, we contacted Public Works Engineer and Chief Traffic Investigator Mike Phillips to look into the situation.

Parents were being cited for parking violations because the curb in front of the Fontana school had been painted red, forcing some parents to drop children off in the street.

As you can imagine, this created a bit of traffic jam when kids were being dropped off or picked up, and it also created safety concerns.

Mr. Phillips visited the school and met with Principal Chavez to discuss the issue. #e curb had been apparently been painted red to accommodate a crosswalk.

But after investigating, Mr. Phillips determine there was more red curb than needed.

Before he put in a work order to have the curb repainted, Mr. Phillips made sure removing the no-parking area wouldn’t affect pedestrian safety by examining the crosswalk from various angles and con"rming drivers and pedestrians would still have eye-to-eye contact with cars parked by the curb.

#e principal was thrilled with the outcome and couldn’t say enough about how helpful Mr. Phillips was.

If you have a story about a helpful County employee who should be featured in the Employee Spotlight, please let me know.

I am always looking for community events to attend as well as community organizations to visit and companies or sights to tour. If you have any suggestions, please let me know.

Everyone is invited to join me for “Breakfast with Your Supervisor” at 8 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 18 at Woody’s Boathouse, 28200 Hwy 189 in Lake Arrowhead. I am hosting breakfast events throughout the Second District to meet face-to-face with residents. #e breakfast at Woody’s costs $12. RSVP by calling (909) 948-5037.

Over the next few weeks, my office will be conducting a recruitment for a Mountain Region Field Representative

who will serve the entire Rim of the World mountain communities from Cedar Pines Park to Green Valley Lake.

#e Representative will spend the vast majority of his/her working hours in the mountains helping residents resolve issues, representing the Second District at events, and investigating mountain community concerns.

If you are an outgoing person with great communication skills ready to make a positive difference in your community, I encourage you to visit the County’s Human Resources Website at http://sbcounty.gov/hr/EmpOpp_JobList.aspx to view the position listing and to apply.
