The Jean Monnet Module on ‘Understanding European Integration

through the Regional Lens’, Centre for European Studies, School of

International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University & Nordic in Centre

India are organizing ‘The Nordic Summer School’, April 19-23,

2021. This is the first Summer School on the Nordics being organized in

India. The Centre for European Studies has been organizing conferences

and roundtables on the Nordics since 2014. The Centre offers a course on

the Nordics for its doctoral research scholars and also has introduced a

Nordic component in the Maters level course offered by the Centre. This

focus on the Nordics has resulted in growing interest of students and some

of them have opted to work on the Nordics for their doctoral research. The

Centre’s fruitful collaboration with University of Agder, Norway has

contributed immensely in sustaining interest on the Nordics. The Nordic

Centre in India has also partnered us in many of our events. The last

Centre event in collaboration with Nordic Centre was an international

conference on ‘India & the Nordics: Building Synergies and Deepening

Ties’ on19 November 2019. For the Nordic Centre collaboration with JNU

for this specific endeavour is a continuing step towards their larger goal of

introducing and delivering Nordic themes to an Indian student audience

in cooperation with their member universities.

For the past one year our lives have been critically impacted because of

the pandemic and academic learning has had its share of disruption.

However, the year has also been one of resilience as people in all walks of

life adjusted and attempted to carry forward. In the academic world

webinar, on-line classes have been the way to continue learning. This

Summer School is an extension of that exercise. The idea is to cater to the

growing interest of Masters and doctoral students at our university and to

create and increase knowledge on the Nordic across other universities.

The programme will give the attendees a comprehensive overview of the

Nordic politics/economy/society/ foreign policy. Important issues like

climate change and environment, energy security will also be discussed.

The one-week programme in an online mode will give students a unique

opportunity to learn and interact with the faculty of various NCI member

universities across the Nordic region who will be delivering the lectures.

The objective is to create, deepen and sustain interest of young

researchers on the Nordic as a step towards encouraging research on the

region and eventually creating a pool of region or country specific Indian

experts on the Nordic.
