Dont Surrender To Macular DegeneratioARA) - Aging gracefully can require you to accept

certain changes in your body, from gray or thinninghair to skin thats less rm than it was in your youth.

But loss of vision shouldnt be on your short list ofchanges that are an inevitable part of growing older.

f youre older than 50,you should know aboutyour eye health and what

you can do to preventor slow vision loss. Age-

    elated macular degen-eration, commonly known

as AMD, is the leadingcause of vision loss inolder adults. AMD affects

    about 10 million people in

he U.S., and that num-ber is projected to doubleby 2020, according tohe National Institutes of

    Health.

AMD is a disease thatwe can prevent and manage, says Dr. Alan Cruess,

Chairman of AMD Alliance Internationals Scientic

Advisory Panel. We have the ability to save the sight

    of many Americans each year.

AMD is a degenerative disease that affects the mac-

ula, the central part of the retina (think of it as yeyes internal projection screen) responsible for ccentral vision. There are two types of AMD - dry

wet. The dry form affects 85 to 90 percent of peo

with AMD and causes varying degrees of vision lo

characterized by a collection of deposits in the mula called drusen. Far less common, but much m

serious, wet Acauses severesion loss, as normal blood vsels grow and l

    blood and uid

    the eye.

If you take cermeasures to kyour eyes heal

    you can prevAMD or slow

    progress. AMD

liance Internatal suggests takthe following th

steps to help vent and manage AMD.

    1. Get regular eye exams

Everyone older than 50 should get regular eye

ams. Most people believe they receive eye exams

often as they should. However, according to a rec

AMD Alliance International study, only 63 percenthose at risk and 56 percent of those at high riskAMD have their eyes checked annually. Routine

ams can help identify AMD and other eye problein their early stages, when many diseases are m

    easily treatable.

    2. Understand the risk factors for AMD

By knowing the risk factors, you can take steps to

duce the chance of getting AMD. Age is the grea

risk factor for AMD - if you are 50 or older, yourrisk of developing the disease. Having a family m

ber with AMD can also increase your risk.

While you cannot control your age or genes, there

other risk factors, including smoking, poor diet, osity, and having high blood pressure, that are con

    able.

Quitting smoking reduces your risk for AMD. Nu-merous studies have demonstrated that people who

smoke are between two and ve and a half times more

kely to develop AMD than people who do not smoke.

Studies also suggest that AMD is linked to diets high

n saturated fat. Reducing saturated fat consumption

and eating more fresh fruits and dark green, leafyvegetables - all foods that are rich in vitamins C and

E, selenium and carotenoids - may delay the onsetor reduce the severity of AMD. Fish rich in omega-3

ats, like salmon, tuna or mackerel, may also slow

he progress of AMD when eaten two to three times

a week, according to a study published in the British

    ournal of Ophthalmology.

    3. Ask questions and know your treatment options

f you have been diagnosed with AMD, your ability to

ask the right questions and receive accurate informa-on is crucial. Review Questions to Ask Your Eye

Care Professional at www.amdalliance.org to help

guide the conversation at your next eye exam. Be

sure you know your exact diagnosis and all available

    reatment options.

Specially formulated vitamins can reduce the ris

advanced AMD for some patients. Effective, clinic

approved treatments are also available for the msevere form of AMD, which may reverse some vis

loss. Make sure you ask your doctor about your

tions and understand what treatment you are rec

    ing.

People living with macular disease should be a

to fully participate in choosing their treatment healthcare options. Know your rights and downl

    the Patient Charter.

Also, if youre diagnosed with AMD, a low vision

habilitation specialist can help you use your reming sight to its full potential through special techniqand low vision aids.

Age-related macular degeneration and the loss osion can be prevented and slowed down. By learn

about the disease and making healthy lifestyle ches, many Americans will be able to enjoy healthy

sion well into their golden years.

Is Your Ride Ready For Winter

ARA) - In many parts of the country, winter can test

even the most seasoned drivers skills with sudden

oad and weather changes. In ideal circumstancesyou have warning of what Old Man Winter might bring

or the day, but many times wet roads can become icy

and a few urries can become a snowstorm without

    any warning at all.

While you cant avoid unforeseeable weather chang-es, you can make sure your car is maintained and

ready for winter driving. From using a radiator coo

additive to carrying an emergency breakdown k

your trunk, here are some tips to prepare your vehfor winter driving:

Check your battery: Instead of landing on your I F

got list, put this one at the top. Make sure your tery posts and connections are free of corrosion that the battery has the water it needs. If your bat

is older than three years, have a certied repair s

test its ability to hold a charge.

Belts and hoses: When youre having your veh

serviced, make the mechanic checks the belts hoses for wear and tear, regardless of the age of y

car. Cold weather can also affect the belts and ho

of a modern car, so an inspection cant hurt.

Have the right antifreeze mix: You will want to aim

a 50-50 mix of antifreeze (coolant) and water ins

your radiator. This prevents the mixture from freez

at extremely cold temperatures. Or try using a c

ant additive like Royal Purples Purple Ice that high performance, synthetic, radiator coolant addit

Get an oil change: When youre getting your vehicle ready for
