The Northern Light The Northern Light The Northern Light The Northern Light Issue 12 Supplement – May 2017 The Journal of the Confraternity of the Knights of the Most Holy Trinity REMEMBRANCE AT CULLODEN Gordon Casely Confraternity members joined one of the biggest turn-outs - some 500 present – all of whom braved one of the coldest days ever for the annual Service of Commemoration at Culloden. But the bonus of the bitter north wind was that it gave uplift to the flying of the largest number of heraldic banners ever seen. For many, this service organised and led by the Gaelic Society of Inverness represents something of an annual pilgrimage. Down the years, friendships have been forged, with many folk simply meeting up each year. A growing custom has been the presence of chiefs whose forebears took part in the battle on 16 th April 1746. In recent years, Alexander Brodie of Brodie, David Irvine of Drum, Donald Cameron of Lochiel and the 5 th Earl of Cromartie have all been present. The personal banner of Lord Cromartie (Azure, a deer’s head cabossed Or) flies annually. The solemnity of the service at the memorial cairn is in contrast to an increasing number of social occasions afterwards, with several clans organising lunches nearby. Clan Cameron Association, for example, generously provides an open door at the nearby Cawdor Tavern to clansfolk who otherwise have no clan function of their own, and the conviviality of the event is concluded by what always proves an informative and entertaining talk. Next year’s service will be held on Saturday 14 th April, 2018 at 1030 hours for 1100. Put the date in your diary now!

Culloden is the powerfully moving site where the 1745 Jacobite Rising came to its tragic end on 16th April 1746, a brutal finality in one of the most harrowing battles in British history. The commemoration is most colourful and a must for every Scot.
