The Northwest Passage was founded on the belief that there is no better way to fully experience the world than by engaging with it on its own terms.

Whether that is encountering the crisp vastness of the Arctic on one of our North Pole expeditions or exploring a sea cave by kayak along the coast of Southern Crete, we design our trips both for the soul and the body.

Our years of experience enable us to give you the most pristine moments possible, whether it’s arriving early at an ancient Minoan palace so we can wander through it alone, arranging an afternoon hike to take full advantage of the joys of sunset and champagne, or timing our trek down the Samaria Gorge at the magic moment when temperature, crowds and lighting are perfect.

Adventure builds the soul like nothing else. If you yearn to be truly revitalized on your vacation, there is no better way than by using the time to expand your mind and massage your soul through a trip with The Northwest Passage. We invite you to join us in meeting an adventure challenge in an indulgent and supportive environment, surrounded by some of the world’s most gorgeous landscapes and fascinating cultures.

We believe you can do more than you think you can. You can be more than you are. Stop being a mere tourist and become an adventurer.

Our MissionThe Northwest Passage Adventure Programs are designed to be fun, enhance personal development, promote self-confidence and teach skills through adventure challenge while providing a safe and exciting environment for participants of all levels. We truly care about your accomplishments and success.

Come ready for a vacation. Go back ready for anything.

Greetings to old friends and new adventurers!

2010, what a year for exploration and family adventures! I had the great fortune to ski to the North Pole and climb Denali, the tallest peak in North America, with my 15 year old son, Taylor. I know that nothing tops the thrill of adventure except for sharing it with your family. I will treasure those experiences forever.

We are gratified that Dale Shippam, Dr. Heather Ross and the Test Your Limits team joined us on a ski ex-pedition to the North Pole in a successful effort to save lives through raising heart disease awareness and financially supporting medical research. After skiing over 100 miles, Dale became the first heart transplant recipient to reach the North Pole. Remarkable! We are also thrilled that Elham Al-Qasimi joined us on another North Pole ski expedition in 2010. At the conclusion of her successful trek, she became the first Arab woman to stand on the North Pole.

Of course we also ventured below the Arctic Circle. Outside magazine lists our Paros-Antiparos Sea Kayak adventure in the Best Trips of 2010 feature. I also had the pleasure of leading our first Santorini and Thirassia kayak circumnavigation. In 2011 we plan to tick Mykonos, Tinos and Naxos off our Greek-Isles-to-be-circumnavigated list. This year we’re offering a “Double Dip Special.” For many, one week in the Greek Isles just doesn’t cut it. Join us on back-to-back adventures in these totally unique islands to experience the full flavor of this magical place. Call the office to learn more about the Double Dip Discount.

2011 promises to be another big year for The Northwest Passage. This past November for the first time in our history we traveled to the South Pole via Cape Town in South Africa. We’ll return to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro, ski across Greenland again, retrace Darwin’s voyage to the Galapagos (one of our favorite new destinations!) and of course, return to the Cyclades to experience the best warm water paddling in the world.

Over 27 years of experience has brought us to the forefront of family adventures and expeditions. Our family trips span from Door County, WI and Devil’s Lake, WI in the Midwest, to the Mediterranean, Africa, the North Pole and beyond. Make sure to read more about our plans to summit Everest in 2012 on page 21. Let us coordinate a one-of-a-kind family reunion or custom adventure. We’ll go anywhere your dreams take you. No one can top our passion or experience.

I believe there is a passionate explorer within each of us. Reawaken the explorer. Join us on an unforgettable adventure. Encounter the natural world on its own terms, and experience the truly sublime. Let us help make your adventure dreams a reality today!

But, which adventure is the one for you? A few simple questions will guide you to the experience you’re looking for:

Why Travel with The Northwest Passage?

1.800.RECREATE (732-7328) | www.nwpassage.com4

With twenty-seven years of experience in planning and leading out-door adventures, the guides and staff of The Northwest Passage have refined the elements of the ideal adventure experience.

No experience required! Our guides will work with you to help you learn a new sport or become comfortable with the outdoors. Calm waters, well marked trails and helpful instructors characterize these trips. An eager spirit and a smile are all you need.

Easy1

Try out new skills, learn new techniques and stretch your comfort zone a little. You’ll encounter short open water crossings, 20-30 mile bike rides and full day hikes over varied terrain. Your heart rate will go up, but no special conditioning is necessary. Basic experience with the trip activities is required and our guides will help you expand your skills and take on new challenges.

Moderate2

When you’re proficient in the basic and intermediate skills of any sport and are ready for open water, challenging weather, back country camping and a chance to push your limits without going over the top, this is your level. Prepare in advance for some strenuous days in order to fully enjoy these adventures.

Demanding3

Your level of skill and physical conditioning must be high as you may encounter adverse conditions that will test your abilities. You’ll spend both days and nights in some of the most extreme conditions the planet has to offer. You will test all your limits. Trip specific preparation is required and you must obtain the consent of the trip leader to participate.

From a 2-hour kayak outing to a custom flight to the North Pole, we offer adventures limited only by your imagination. For over 25 years, we’ve worked with local park districts and multi-million dollar corporations, families, ski clubs, high schools and outdoor retailers to create the perfect group adventure. Our dedication to high-quality custom adventures has earned us a long list of satisfied clients.

The Northwest Passage has created custom adventures for:

Family AdventuresNothing tops the experience of cresting a wave, climbing a mountain, completing a portage or encountering new cultures and remote wilderness – except the joy of sharing that experience with your family. I know.

In 1993, I led the first group of mushers and skiers to the North Pole. It was a perfect expedition highlighted by a perfect ending: my family joined me at the Pole on the pick-up. It was one of the finer moments of my life. - Rick Sweitzer

Today The Northwest Passage offers that same adventure opportunity for your family, all ages and skill levels. Do not just take it from us - here is what other families like yourself have to say.

”This is definitely one of my most enjoyable vacations. It was a challenge for me personally, and I think my 3 kids to complete the kayak trip (we are all beginners). I felt so good that we were all able to complete the trip. The guides were so patient and nice to us as we were learning. The whole experience was great being with family for a week without TV, cell phones. It was definitely one of our better vacations and we will be visiting the website and planning another trip in the future.” - H Olson, Apostle Islands 2008

We invite you to make your family adventure dreams a reality.

New Trips

“Double Dip”We at the Northwest Passage have been hiking the coastal trails and kayaking the stunning, turquoise waters of the Greek Isles for well over a decade now, and the only complaint we ever hear is that the normal eight day trip is simply too tight a schedule to really set the clocks to “island time” and experience everything that the Cyclades have to offer. Not only is the region totally unique, but so is each island. This is why we love “double dipping” and paddling two trips back-to-back. Every big box tourist group out there knows all about the widely publicized main attractions of the islands, but they fail to capture the magnificent total essence of a Greek Isles adventure. We make sure to explore the famous beaches, ancient ruins sites and chic oceanside hill towns, but that’s when we ‘re just getting started. We’ll paddle to a traditional Greek (and tourist free!) village on the isle of Thirassia, Santorini’s sister island, explore the pristine coves around the point from Paradise Beach on Mykonos and overnight in Cretan villages that are only acces-sible to hikers and boaters. Plus, all of our guides are experts in Greek history, culture and can always recommend a tasty local specialty. Don’t board your return flight after just settling into a Cyclades induced state of mental and physical balance. Make it an adventure of a lifetime and set off to explore another to-tally unique island. You’ll savor every minute of it. Yammas!

10-Day Inn-to-Inn Sea KayakingYou asked, and we listened! Many have found our standard week of 8 days and 7 nights in Crete too short. So, we’ve added more time, more great paddling and new inspiring locations where you can relax, refresh and rejuvenate in the warmth of the Mediterranean sun. Since so many of our Crete adventurers choose to come back again, this is a great way to repeat the best of your Crete experience while adding dazzling new paddling along the pristine beaches west of Agia Roumeli, one of our favorite stops.

Polar Explorers, a division of The Northwest Passage, announces a special South Pole Cen-tennial Expedition in commemoration of Roald Amundsen’s 1911 discovery of the South Pole. Like Polar Explorers’ other polar flight and ski expeditions, the South Pole Centennial Expedition suits travelers ready to embrace the physical and mental challenges of the harsh yet enchantingly beautiful polar environments. Polar Explorers’ guides ensure that all team members acquire all the necessary equipment, skills and knowledge for a successful and rewarding South Pole expedition.

Upon arriving on Antarctica via Cape Town, South Africa, trip participants experience all things Antarctic including an extended visit to the South Pole, observation of the Queen Maud Land Mountains, a visit to an emperor penguin colony as well as a tour of an interna-tional research station. Adventurous team members who wish to travel in the footsteps of Amundsen and Scott can opt to ski the last 20 kilometers to the pole, spending one night en route in expedition tents. Team members who prefer to fly to the South Pole will meet up with the ski team at the South Pole where they will take a special tour of the Amundsen-Scott South Pole station before spending the night at the South Pole in expedition tents.

Sea Kayaking, Hiking & CampingRenowned for its soaring mountains, glaciers, alpine valleys and polar bears, Spitsbergen is an adventurer’s paradise. In recent years, it has also become a staging area for North Pole ex-peditions, including our own. Join us as we embark on a kayak camping journey through this arctic playground. The area we’ll be traveling through is a protected wildlife refuge, home to polar bears, Spitsbergen reindeer, arctic fox and, along the coast, various sea mammals; walrus, ring seal, bearded seal, Greenland seal, hooded seal, white-nosed dolphin, narwhal and killer whales. Spitsbergen boasts the high Arctic’s greatest variation in nature and fauna, more than Arctic Canada, Siberia and Greenland.

7 + 3 Father-Son, Daddy-Daughter Expedition SeriesAfter countless days skiing across frozen, unforgiving Antarctic, Roald Amundsen becomes the first man to reach the South Pole. Following one of the most storied ascents in mountaineering history, Sir Edmund Hillary, after the mountain had beaten many more extensively funded and outfitted teams, sinks his crampons into the summit of Mount Everest. What incredible accom-plishments these are. What great adventure stories Amundsen and Hillary must have shared with their families upon their return.

Adventure stories are great. Adventures are even better. But adventures with your family are simply unbeatable. Don’t just share stories with your family. Share the whole experience! The 7 + 3 series refers to 10 of the greatest and most rewarding outdoor challenges on earth. The 7 is for the vertical challenge climbing the tallest peak on each continent. The 3 is for the horizontal challenge of skiing to the North Pole, South Pole and across Greenland, the world’s largest island and ice cap. Nothing builds or enhances tight-knit bonds like sharing the preparation, execution and successful completion of an unforgettable expedition. We know from experience. The joys of a shared family effort always overshadow the accom-plishment of a successful expedition.

With over 25 years of designing and guiding family trips, over 40 expeditions to the poles and our experience organizing expeditions all over the world, no one is better prepared to create a world class adventure for you and your family. Kids grow up faster than you think. Give them the lifelong memories of skiing together across Greenland, having hot drinks in the tent before pushing on for the North or South Pole or share sublime moments atop the world on Everest.

Don’t delay planning your upcoming family adventures. The South Pole season runs from December to January, and North Pole trips get underway in April. Cross Greenland on skis, with options for dogsled and kite travel, in June, or climb Kilimanjaro in August. Or you can take on the tallest order the world has to offer, and climb Everest with us in 2012. Don’t put off booking the ultimate family adventure! Contact our office for more details on dates, prices and planning.
