Home News

In a few weeks, the Ageless Aviation Dreams Foundation will once again be coming to Wisconsin and taking veterans from our state on a

remarkable flight.

Last year, multiple members at our Veterans Home at King were selected for the opportunity to climb into the open cockpit and take a flight in a 1940s biplane at the Waupaca Municipal Airport. It was an unforgettable experience for those veterans, and I know many are looking forward to a chance to take part in the flight this year.

The volunteer group will be using the Spirit of Wisconsin, a 1943 vintage Stearman biplane that was once used to train military aviators, to provide free flights to veterans living in long-term care communities like King. Ageless Aviation is teaming up with the Waupaca County Caregiver Coalition to make this happen in Waupaca again.

What a great, emotional experience for our World War II veterans. It’s a direct result of what teaming up to honor our veterans can do. Unique experiences like this can go a long way for our veterans.

Additional details are still pending, but I am looking forward to hearing stories of the Dream Flight from our members that take part in it. The group will have their first flights in Wisconsin on June 19 and they will be in Waupaca on June 20. They will also be flying in Green Bay, Eau Claire, La Crosse, Madison, Waukesha and Oshkosh.

This opportunity and the people making it possible is another reminder of how many organizations devote their time and money to support Wisconsin veterans and their families. Please join me in extending appreciation for all they do.

Getting

Hello, my name is Mark Forseth. As you can see, I love volunteering here at King. Where else can

an Elvis sit on your lap? I have been volunteering at King since May of 2018. I live in the little town north of Waupaca named Iola, which is about 20 miles away. I have been married to my bride for over 41 years and we have two children, one is deceased and our other child is expecting our second grand baby ANY DAY NOW!

I have several different hobbies I enjoy, golfing is one and just joined a golfing league on Tuesday mornings (golfing league today, PGA Tour tomorrow? Nope, just having a great time with friends), I also enjoy, racquetball, watching the Packers and Brewers games and of course, hanging out with my granddaughter and soon-to-be grand baby. I volunteer when and where I can including assisting with the All Camp Trips, escorting members to and from events, helped with grocery deliveries and

now helping out with the wheel chair program. I have volunteered for many organizations including Youth Sport programs, Lions Club, Meals on Wheels, Project Backpack and many nonprofit board positions. I am currently involved with the Iola Lions Club, Iola Car Show Board and two Economic Development Boards. Before I retired, I worked for

an electric cooperative (which I got a charge out of ) and banking (don’t hold that against me). One of my retirement goals was to do more volunteering and since I am not a veteran, volunteering is my small way of showing my appreciation to those that gave so much for our freedom. Helping out at King was a no-brainer! I also enjoy the conversations I have with

the members a/k/a The Heroes. A little over a year ago I lost my best friend who was a Vietnam War Veteran, volunteering at King is also a way I can honor his memory.

Timber Rattlers Game. Members took their first baseball game trip in 2019, to the Timber Rattlers in Appleton. The game was great-the weather, not so much. It was a double header and we watched the T-Rats win the first game, but rain caused us to leave early for the second game. Thank you the AMVETS for sponsoring this event.

Adjusting to new realities is a difficult task for many people. I define the term, “new reality”

as follows: “The way life is right now, whether you like it or not.” Each and every one of us has to make adjustments in our lives as circumstances dictate changes in the world around us. Many times we long for the way that things used to be, forgetting that the changes that preceded that time in our lives were difficult, too.

There is a saying that sounds like something from the Bible (but isn’t) that goes “Blessed are the flexible for they shall not be broken.” In the Epistle to the Philippians chapter 4 verses 11-13 the Apostle Paul says it like this: “I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”

New realities come through both things we can control and things that we can’t control. Some are just part of the process of life: Aging, disability, death of a spouse, the end of a marriage through the heartbreak of divorce. Other things are forced on us by changes in technology or in the workplace or even the political climate in our state and in our nation and the economy. We feel like we have lost control and it is a frightening thing.

The thing to remember is that all things change. It is how we adjust and adapt to that change that is important. Here are some ways that people react to the changing world around them.

1. Resist and complain. Some people refuse to get comfortable in new situations. They constantly resist reality, especially when it is forced on them against their will. They spend years complaining about the injustices that have come their way. Their expectations were not met therefore they have dedicated themselves to being miserable and making life miserable for everyone around them. The problem here is that complaining and a bitter attitude never change things back to the way they were.

2. Give up in despair. This often happens when a child dies or a spouse passes away. The survivors don’t feel like there is any reason to go on living and just succumb to the grieving process and don’t try to regain any semblance of a quality life. Giving up will never restore anything, it just steals life from you.

3. Learn to cope. Many times people don’t really adjust, they just learn to cope. That means that they aren’t really happy about the way things are but rather than trying to do anything about it they just resign themselves to being unhappy

Today I would like to tell you about Pa and Ma Malaschetz who were a very important part of

my life while growing up. They were a dear couple from Albania who lived down the road from us in a tiny, little house. They were even poorer than my family yet they never showed it.

It was kind of funny though when Pa had to do dishes. He DID NOT like doing dishes so when his turn came he called for Lucky, their little white Terrier. Lucky always came running because he knew what was coming. It was his treat time of the day. Once Pa had collected all the dishes off the table he looked each one over good and then held them down for Lucky to lick off. When Lucky had finished his job Pa looked the dish over again carefully. If it looked good to him he thanked Lucky for the good job he had done, then he put the dish back into the cupboard ready for the next meal.

The first time I learned how Pa did dishes I was too young to be much help. As I got older Pa and I would do the dishes together. Lest you think it was awful how Pa and Lucky did the dishes, I ate with Pa and Ma frequently and off those same dishes. Never noticed any difference in taste, disease or anything else you might think of so never worried about it. We never got ill because of Lucky or the dishes either.

Pa never had to do the dishes much before the accident. Afterward was a different story……..

They were planning on going to town together so Pa went out to get the car ready to go. He had the car partially backed out of the garage when

Snowball, their pet lamb, started bleating and screaming something awful. Finally Pa heard and saw Snowball and her commotion. He stopped to check on what was bothering her so much. Imagine the shock and horror when he discovered that he had backed over Ma partway. If Snowball hadn’t made all the fuss Ma would have been killed that day! What a shocking, horrible, wonderful day!!!

From that day onward Ma became an invalid. About all she was able to do was sit and speak somewhat. It was both great and awful. She was no longer able to communicate with us like usual. Pa was able to understand what Ma was trying to say but it was so difficult for me. I felt so bad about that because there was no one else to communicate with her except Pa and me. But, Praise God, Ma was still with us. That was a real blessing for us.

You see, this elderly couple was all alone here; no relatives, no friends or neighbors that they were very close with. Their only child, Isabella, died in the flu epidemic in the early years of the 1900’s. Now they had nothing left except a broken heart. I kind of became Isabella’s substitute, a poor one to be sure but I was all they had. And I loved it as well.

After many years sharing our lives as we did Pa asked if I would come down and live with them. Then he would have help caring for Ma and I would kind of become more like their daughter. Jeepers, that sounded awful good to me. After all I would finally be an only child, not part of a herd. That was

2019 Open House. The rain did not stop vendors and people from coming to the annual Open House. such an exciting thought. And Pa would have help which also sounded good to me. I already loved this couple like my family so it might have been wonderful.

Sadly, Mother said “no” in a hurry. That really made me sad. This very dear couple needed me so badly and I would be a big help for them. Plus, I would be an only kid (who was truly wanted!) However, as time went by our family moved away from Ma and Pa and they were left with no one. That absolutely devastated me.

(Before we left this special couple gave me some of Isabella’s beautiful jewelry. It was more outstandingly gorgeous than anything I ever had!) The jewelry was very precious to me but it couldn’t take the place of “my other family”. That was a very sad time for me because we moved too far away for me to be able to travel back and forth. I was so concerned that there was nobody to help them anymore.

It wasn’t long after we moved that Pa died. We did get to the funeral home to see my dear “other father” one last time. Ma was placed in a Home where she should get the care she needed. There was never another opportunity to see Ma. How I missed them! It was almost as though life had lost its meaning. It was so empty!

Eventually life began to work again. I became happier that my family surrounded me once more. I have always adored Mother and our relationship grew much stronger. Every one of my siblings grew more special to me. The world was back in order once again. Thank you Jesus!

Many years have traveled on and life has changed dramatically. But Pa and Ma have remained a very important part of my memory. I love them. I miss them. And I look forward to seeing them again when I finally graduate into Heaven one day. What a reunion that will be!

and living through it. The passion is gone but they are surviving, always waiting for something but not really sure what it is.

4. Adjust and thrive. Learning to adapt to the new reality and make the most of it is the healthiest way for all of us. In the quote from Philippians above Paul said that he learned to be content in every circumstance. He didn’t let the circumstance consume him but rather learned to do all things in the strength of Christ.

Things are always changing. It is how we respond to those changes that shape our destiny. No matter what the changes around us we still have to live in this world. Don’t let your unmet expectations destroy your ability to see the opportunities that come your way. Take advantage of all that is being offered to you. Embrace your new reality and

make the adjustments that you need to make to thrive. Remember, you can do all things through Christ who will strengthen you!

Cinco de Mayo. Members enjoyed dressing up to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Members enjoyed snacks and tried out the Virtual Reality Goggles, exploring Mexico.

National Nursing Home Week. Members and staff celebrated Nursing Home Week by dressing up everyday during the week.

Stordock Hall Got Fired Up With Its First Camp Fire and Movie In The Park This Season. Despite the rain on open house, we are happy to welcome all the outdoor activities that will be happening this year. Stordock hall started their gardening adventures and building bird houses in our wood crafting classes for our winged friends, and we enjoyed more inter-generational activities in our activity room. Stordock Hall also has a new addition to our activities department. Meet Nicole Montgomery, our activity therapist intern who is here with us from the University of Northern Iowa. She is here with us for a 14 week internship learning about the activity functions of the veteran’s home.
