Happy New Year Everyone!! I hope everyone has a great new year. Thank you to everyone for their donations and bids for the silent auction fundraiser in December. From the editor:

Time for a fresh start! With the new year comes the promise of new beginnings. From starting a hobby to promising yourself that you will keep in touch with the people you care about, the possibilities for a ‘new year’s resolution’ are endless. Many of us break those resolutions as quickly as we make them, but if there’s one thing we can all easily do this year is to be kind to each other and the living things around us. Holding the door open for someone who has their hands full, donating your spare change to charity, even slowing down to let that snake or spider cross the road are all good examples of this. You may not make a

difference in the world, but you made a difference to that one living thing. I hope your New Year’s Day was everything you hoped for, and that the coming months find you in good health, good spirits, and surrounded by those who care about you. As always, stay safe out there! Trivia Birthstone: Garnet Flower: Carnation The name ‘January’ is derived from the Roman deity ‘Janus’, who was the ‘God of the Gateways’ and ‘God of the Journey’. It’s fitting that we celebrate our new year and new beginnings in this month. The Roman Senate declared January 1st to be the beginning of the new year in 153 BCE. New Year’s Day is now one of the most widely celebrated holidays. January is known as Blood Donor Month, National Hobby Month, and ‘Thank you’ Month. This month in history: On January 3rd, 1959, Alaska was admitted as the 49th U.S. state. It has a land mass nearly 1/5 the size of all the lower 48 states combined. The U.S. Surgeon General declared cigarettes may be hazardous to the smoker’s health on January 11th, 1964. It was the first of such official government reports. On January 12th, 1932, Hattie W. Caraway, a Democrat from Arkansas, was appointed to fill the term of her recently deceased husband, Thaddeus H. Caraway. She later became the first woman to be elected to the Senate. Our record low was -28 degrees Fahrenheit on January 22nd, 1930, in Lead Hill and our record high was 90 degrees Fahrenheit on January 11th, 1928, in Dumas.

Available to clean homes weekly or bi-monthly. Can also dog sit while you are

Local News and FYI Since EHC disbanded, we need someone to head up the road clean-up. It needs to be done twice

a year in the spring and in the fall. We are in need of volunteers.

***Important community information***

As of March 1st, our entire Fire Department has an ISO rating of 5. This rating is important for your insurance company. The lower the rating, the lower your premium should be.

Also, we are in need of volunteers to serve in any capacity with the Fire Department. If you are

interested in helping your community, please call our Fire Chief, Ron Everroad at (870)-431-4304 for more information. If you’re able, please attend our meeting on the second Thursday of each

month.

A wonderful time at the Women’s Club Christmas Party. Great food and fun games. Oakland

area women are invited to participate on the 1st Tuesday of each month. There will be no

meeting in January, but we might have afternoon dominos (weather permitting).

The OAIA Christmas Potluck Dinner was well

attended. Lots of good food

was enjoyed by all.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all my friends and neighbors in the

FYI and FAQs

911 REMINDER

Dialing 911 from a cell phone is not like calling from a landline, where a computer provides the dispatcher

with the address and phone number of your location. Cell phones send signals through air, and the tower

that picks up the signal may or may not route your call to the appropriate call center.

In our area, it is very common for 911 cell-phone calls to be answered in Missouri. In the event you need to

dial 911 via cell phone, be sure to inform the dispatcher of your exact location, so your call can be

transferred to the appropriate call center.

FAQS and FYI cont.

BLASTS, POSTS, AND ADS ................................................................................. Ann Haesele (870) 431-8294

We routinely get requests for items to be inserted into the newsletter, “blasted” to our e-mail contacts,

and/or posted on Oakland’s Facebook page. If the request concerns a community-related issue or event, or

is in regard to a lost or found pet, we will publish the information free of charge.

Yard sale notices, thank-you notes, and other such items are considered to be ads. The cost for text-only

newsletter ads is 10 cents per word, with a minimum cost of $4.00. Photographs may be added for an

additional charge.

As approved at the June 2016 OAIA meeting, there will be a $10 charge for e-mail blasts/Facebook posts,

regardless of length. All ads must be paid in advance; checks may be made payable to OAIA.

HALL RENTAL ............................................................................................ Debbie Andrasko (314) 623-0464

Our community center building and facilities are available to rent for public and private functions

(fundraisers, parties, wedding receptions, memorials, reunions, etc.) Rental fee is due with the reservation

along with a signed lease agreement. The cost is $150.00 per event, $50.00 refunded upon inspection post

event. Call Debbie for more info or to make your reservation.

OPEN BURNING .................................................................................... 911 Non-Emergency (870) 425-2361

Don’t forget to call the 911 Center (non-emergency) if you’re going to burn a brush pile. This way your

name and address will be on file in case someone calls about a fire, saving our volunteer firefighters an

unnecessary trip.

CAN DONATIONS ......................................................................................... Larry McAllister (870) 431-8343

When donating aluminum cans to OPLFPD, please use plastic bags (13-gallon or larger; no Wal-Mart bags)

and tie them shut before dropping them in the pickup station at the Community Center.

MEDICAL SUPPLIES ............................................................................................. Ann Haesele (870) 431-8294

Do you need to borrow a wheelchair or quad cane? How about a shower seat or walker? If so, your

neighbors can help! Call Ann to see if we’ve got what you need, or if you have items to donate or lend.

ADVERTISING SPACE AVAILABLE............................................................... Marlene Berezik (870) 431-4294

If you are interested in advertising your business on the billboard sign on Highway 5 at the intersection with

Highway 202, contact Marlene.

FOOD SHELF .................................................................................................. Berenda O’Neal (870) 656-0615

A food shelf is located in the foyer of the Community Center to help those who may be in need of

assistance. If you'd like to donate, just place non-perishable food items on the shelf, and help your

neighbors!
