THE OFFICE OF REGISTRATION AND RECORDS

The enrollments for both the fall and spring semesters exceededthose of the previous year for the sixth time since 1952. In the fall of1958, 23,900 students were enrolled for residence credit in degree programs, and an' additional 4,236 students were enrolled in credit coursesat University centers, making the total enrollment in credit courses28,154 for the first semester.

The composition of this student body changed only slightly fromthe previous year. Of the fall enrollment 67.2 per cent were men. Afurther breakdown shows that 37.0 per cent were undergraduate men,30.1 per cent were graduate men, 25.0 per cent were undergraduatewomen, and 7.9 per cent were graduate women. Michigan residents madeup 66.2 per cent of th~ total. Of the undergraduates 24.2 per cent werefreshmen, 24.8 per cent sophomores, 24.5 per cent juniors, and 22.3 percent seniors; 4.2 per cent were classified as special students.

The freshman class of 3,084 entering .in September nearly equalledthe record of 3,089 entering in the fall of 1956. A total of 3,295 freshmenentered the University during the fiscal year, of whom 53 per cent weremen and 47 per cent were women. The ratio of Michigan to non-Michiganresidents remained at two to one.

Every Michigan county,. every state (including Alaska and Hawaii),the District of Columbia, the Canal Zone, Guam, Puerto Rico, and theVirgin Islands, and 84 foreign nations were represented in the studentbody during 1958-59.

The University granted a total of 6,242 earned degrees during thefiscal year. Of these, 49.4 per cent were bachelor's degrees, 33.9 per centmaster's degrees, 4.9 per cent doctorates, and 11.8 per cent graduateprofessional degrees in dentistry, law, medicine, public health, and socialwork. The number of degrees granted was 19.5 per cent of the total number of students enrolled in degree programs.

The scholarship report for the year 1958-59 (see Table XXII andXXIII) concerns' undergraduate students only. This report has _beenchanged from an annual to a semester basis.

The average earned by all men and women during the first semester, taking 205,861 semester hours of credit, was 2.57; during the secondsemester, taking 191,174 semester hours of credit, their average was2.62. Tlie women, earning a first semester average of 2.67 and a secondsemester average of 2.71, maintained their usual higher average thanthe men. The men's average during the' first and second semester was2.50 and 2.56, respectively.' The new fall freshman class had a 2.39 aver~ge, which was .02 grade-point better than a year ago. The freshmanwomen earned a 2.43 average and the men a 2.36 average.

As indicated above, grades earned by students in the School ofDentistry, the Graduate School, the Law School, the Medical School, andthe School of Social Work, and grades for graduate students in the Schoolof Business Administration, the School of Music, the Sch09l of NaturalResources, and the School of Public Health have been excluded fromthis report. Freshmen are defined as those students who entered theUniversity in the fall of 1958 or the spring of 1959 with less than onesemester of college experience.

Another measure of academic success is the degree of persistence(Table XXI) shown by fall freshmen in returning for the next seme~

ter. Ninety-three per cent of the 3,084 fall freshmen continued in theUniversity for the second semester.

The thirty-sixth Honors Convocations was held May 8, 1959, inspecial recognition of 750 'undergraduate students who had earned atleast a 3.5_ grade-point average for the preceding two semesters, or, ifthey were' freshmen, had earned this average for their first semester.Per~onnel in this office compiled the necessary information, together withthe membership of honor societies, recipients of scholarships, and students honored for extracurricular activities. Copies of the Convocation

, program, together with a letter and a list of their former students whowere honored, were sent to 155 Michigan high schools, 5 Michigan juniorcolleges, and one out-of-state junior college. Of the 750 students honored, 60 per cent were from Michigan high schools.

The tables and charts that follow summarize the year's enrollment, show the geographical distribution, indicate class distribution, and reportother pertinent facts of the University's population.

Throughout these tables the term "Graduate," in the Student Groupcolumn, is used to indicate students enrolled in the Horace H. RackhamSchool of Graduate Studies.

The usual procedures were followed in rep9rting the numper ofstudents registered at the University. The year includes the 1958 summer session, the 1958-59 first semester, and the 1958-59 second semester. It should be noted that apparent numerical discrepancies in totals are theresult of students who are enrolled in two or more units and countedbut once in the net total.

In the summary, enrollments have been divided into groups as fol

lows:

I-A 'Students in University degree or postgraduate professional residencecredit level' programs 31,146

I-B Students in University postgraduate professional programs of fewerthan four weeks in the summer session or fewer than eight weeksduring either semester 995

II-A 1 Students in University Extension credit courses offered in classesorganized in Ann Arbor, Battle Creek,. Detroit, .the area offices atEscanaba, Flint, Grand Rapids, Port Huron, Saginaw, and TraverseCity. Classes were also held in seventy-eight other Michigan com-munities , 5,554

II-A 2 Students in University Extension credit courses offered throughcorrespondence . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1,204

II-B Students in extramural postgraduate programs in medicine, of-fered at eighteen permanent centers in the state 778

III-A 1 Students in University Extension certificate classes, designed toassist the mature individual who is seeking continued study alonglines not covered in regular University courses 4,987

III-A 2 Students in University Extension certificate courses offered throughcorrespondence . , 1,088

Extramural students in certificate programs in Group III are countedin the summary only. Other groups mentioned in the summary are included in the tables on geographical distribution of students, since theyrepresent a service of instruction to the people of the state, the nation, and areas outside the continental United States. Geographical distributions are made according to the home address given by each student onhis registration card.

In all tables except the summary, geographic and chronological students in I-B and II-B have been omitted because registrations in thesegroups are for a comparatively short period, and the University recognizesthat they are not comparable to enrollments in courses of regulationlength.

*In 1955 the transcript fee was increased to $1.00; this accounts for the unusual increasein the "amount received" column. Transcripts were used as grade reports to the studentSand to their deans and departments. These reports were printed en masse at the end ofeach semester and summer session. In addition, copies of transcripts of graduates ofMichigan high schools and junior colleges are sent to the schools when the students receivetheir first d~gree from the University.
