Basenji Club of America, Inc. BULLETIN - 4

FROM THE EDITORHi!

I’m the new Managing Editor of the Basenji Club of America’s Bulletin. This is a brand new world to me and I’m on a steep learning curve to learn all the background processes and software utilized to create this and future issues. Kim did an admirable job producing the Bulletin and I hope that I can come close to walking in her shoes. She provided electronic copies of past issues that I’ve found greatly helpful. I’ve had two others

points of using the software. I’m proud to produce what you see but understand my education is a work in progress and it will improve.

My personal goal for this publication is to bring it back to being a place to encourage participation from the fancy. Constructively written diverse and varied opinions may be offered for publications provided language and content are appropriate for the audience. We all have differing opinions… we would not be nearly as interesting if we all thought alike!

Discourse and differing opinions are encouraged, provided it’s respectful and civil. When necessary, submittals may be returned to authors as appropriate for improvement to enhance perception of the written word (if it confuses me/us, it might confuse others). For letters to the editor, if the item submitted is particularly lengthy, it may be returned to shorten or to encourage using as an article vs an editorial. Items that are volatile or not

consideration. Between publication of the 4th quarter 2011 issue and this

issue, there’s been some uncertainty about who should receive information and/or where to send items to for publication. I’m proud that most if not all items made their way through channels

to me. I hope that nothing has been missed but if so, will apologize in advance and correct it in the next issue. With that confusion on where thing should be sent, the ad quantity is not where it needs to be. Carmella Troisi-Hoerr has done the ad

the shoes of advertising manager for upcoming issues. For those of you that know the production software and can utilize it well, you’re welcome to make your own camera-ready ad. I will encourage those that self-design to please consider that Microsoft PowerPoint and Publisher are not the most productive ad-design software choices for our purposes. You may use it to create a pdf to demonstrate how you want your ad laid out but the text should come in a form that is editable in Microsoft Word.

Ad space IS available! Reserve early to get YOUR preferred ad space. Shop online for your ad (pay online) at www.basenji.org . Color ads – cover is $225, back cover is $175, inside covers and center spread are $140 per page. Full pages inside

up online payment for your ad. Self-designed ads are acceptable. Hand-drawn sketches of your ad layout are acceptable when accompanied by your typewritten information and your photographs. Photos and text submitted electronically makes it easy for us to avoid typos. All ads, once completed, will be returned to the owner for approval before publication. Please note there are deadlines – meeting each deadline is extremely important.

I look forward to a productive year.

Greetings!

My name is Carrie Jones and I am your new president. I have served as a member of the Board from 2005-2008 and again in 2011 prior to being elected to this new position. Experience and knowledge obtained while I was a Board member are serving me well in 2012 -yet I still do have many questions and am continuing to learn about Club matters on a daily basis. Thankfully, I have a diverse, experienced group of individuals serving with me and am already appreciating the various perspectives and knowledge they bring to the Board.

I had some hard working, well-organized

this position to me, but with her continued assistance and input from the 2012 Board I believe we will continue to move in the right direction. During Pam’s two years as BCOA President, we witnessed many changes and one that I think deserves mentioning is the uploading of the library of documents to the BCOA website. It’s something I had dreamed of and thanks to the efforts of hard working volunteers under Pam’s direction, that project has come to fruition.

While my duties primarily focus on the future right now, I want to pause to express best wishes to those I served with in 2011, but are not directly working with me this year: Pam Geoffroy, Jon Curby, Damara Bolte’, Jackie Jones, Lisa Auerbach, Laurie Stargell, and Carole Kirk. It was a privilege to work with all of you and I hope you are enjoying quieter e-mail in boxes!

be a part of Basenji history! Thanks to Dr. Gary Johnson DVM PhD and his colleagues at the University of Missouri, we now have a direct genetic test for Fanconi Syndrome! I realize this is not hot-off-the-press news, but it excites me so much that I cannot refrain from not mentioning it again. I am humbled by the collaboration among breeders and owners who shared health information and provided DNA samples so the

willing to share information, Sally Wallis’ pedigree database proved to be invaluable to our researchers. Finally, I would be remiss if I neglected to thank Jon Curby for his contribution to this project, also. This is a time to be thankful and celebrate. A round of applause for everyone, please!

Speaking of historical events, in this issue there is information on four native stock Basenjis that are submitted for inclusion in the AKC Stud Book. Please take the time to review the information provided because ballots for these dogs will be mailed soon.

In reading your Bulletin Board newsletter, you will note that the AKC Delegate ballot approves what can be considered a high-end unbudgeted expense of $2,200.00 (assuming the Delegate attends all four meetings) and while this is a new expense for

BCOA, many all-breed kennel clubs and parent clubs routinely pay at least a portion of the expenses incurred by their Delegate while attending the AKC quarterly meetings. While we have had the luxury of a “free ride” for the past 15 years, assisting our Delegate with airfare and lodging is an expense we can afford and while some members have inquired as to why the 2012 Delegate resides on the west coast, which is not local for the east coast meetings that are held near New

purchase, and airline. Furthermore, we are a nationwide club and choosing a representative based primarily on geography is greatly limiting our options and is unfair to talented and willing volunteers.

As the year passes, you will probably notice that some things are changing while some things are staying the same and while everyone will not agree with every decision made by me and/or the Board, hopefully you will feel comfortable with the totality of Board decisions and feel comfortable with the general direction we are heading. Should you want to contact me, feel free to send me an email or call me on the telephone. While I am a member of a couple email discussion lists, I sometimes only check that particular account a few times a week whereas I check my [email protected] account multiple times per day and will see your note sooner than if you write to me through a chat list discussion.

notice a different look and that is because our interim editor, Kim Noyes, has stepped down from this position and just very recently, Connie Camp volunteered for this position. I am thankful Kim volunteered so much of her time to create a quality magazine in 2011 and am eager to watch Connie grow as our new editor.

If you have not done so already, please visit the 2012 National Specialty website. This year’s specialty is held earlier than in years past so now is the time to start making plans. I hope to see you in Gettysburg and if we have not yet had the pleasure of meeting in person, please take the time to say hello.

I am honored to serve as your president and wish all of you and your Basenjis a happy, healthy 2012.

RE: BCOA Bulletin article “Chicago Sun Times BCOA picket”. My background: In 1963 I became Joyce Boehm. We had Ericonji Kennels - Boarding, Training, Grooming & raised show Basenjis (since mid-1950’s). Best known for our Eng./Am. CH. Andersley Atlantic. Located in Northbrook, Illinois. At 18 yrs. of age I was fascinated by the breed & dog shows. 49 yrs. later am owned by red/white girl - “Dancer” (Furaha Basenjis - Arnieta Kurtz). “Dancer” goes back to my original bloodlines. (Basenji is the only breed I’ve ever had). As the organizer of the Chicago Sun Times picket would like to expound on the article published 2/25/1964 “Dog Without a Bark? You Can Have Him” by

Chicago Sun Times. As it demeaned our beloved breed I decided to organize a picket.

Contacted the 10 members of our newly formed Royal Scarab Basenji Club (now it’s The Greater Chicagoland Basenji Club - I’m a lifetime member). Though all belonged to BCOA, they were not involved. (whoever did signs made 2 with BCOA as it’s the parent club). Back then no one would’ve contacted BCOA as we had to act quickly. (No computers, email or cell phones in the olden days). Other Basenji owners in our area were also contacted. RSBC members Berdene Sweet, Rodney Butterworth, Tom Diener & myself (along with others) were at the picketing. Berdene Sweet & I went inside the Chicago Sun Times building and informed them of our intent to picket. We all walked around outside with

came out and talked to us. He was quite surprised to be picketed! We did our best to enlighten him about our wonderful and unique breed. Had expected a small article as follow up in his next column. Imagine our delight to be on the front page of the Chicago Sun Times the next day - 2/28/1964. “Our Jack Barks for the Basenjis”. (The Joyce Boehm in photos is me). Berdene Sweet (KenDene Basenjis) in Indiana called me upon receiving a copy of the Dec. 2011 article. She, too, recalled all the above. Had a good time reminiscing. What a thrill this “blast from the past” has been. Some of the photos were new to us as not all were in the paper.

Sincerely, with Yodels,Joyce V. Banderman (photo)Tarpon Springs, FL

Basenji Club of America, Inc. BULLETIN - 7

After submitting this AKC delegates report I learned that I had been replaced as delegate by the new Board of directors. While it was certainly not my wish to be replaced, the BCOA President has the option to recommend to the Board whatever changes in the volunteer pool they choose.

After being elected BCOA president three times and being charged with several committee chairs over the previous twenty years I was ready in 1996 to take on something new. Having had worked with the AKC President and many staff to effect the reopening of the Basenji stud book in 1989, which had never been done for any breed, I felt that I would be able to present BCOA concerns to the places where they would receive attention.

At that time I committed to attending at least an average of two delegates meetings per year. Until about ten years ago all meetings were held in mid-town Manhattan and I felt that would be about the limit of what I could afford in terms of air travel and hotels .

Since 1996 I have attended every BCOA annual meeting to report to the Board and membership, allotted time, as to the state of AKC. Every task given me by the BCOA board was carried to the AKC management and I was able to obtain some degree of satisfaction to those issues.

Finally, it has been an enjoyable and rewarding experience and given the opportunity I would gladly assume the responsibility again.AKC Delegates Meeting, December 2011

The December delegates meeting held at the Rosen Center, Orlando Florida was, as is usually the case, in conjunction with the Eukanuba National Championship show. Committee meetings were held on Thursday, December 15. Since those meetings are arranged in two sessions it is only possible to attend two of the committee meetings completely or try to spend a small portion of time in several. I was able to attend the Parent Club committee and part of the Health Committee meeting as well as the Dog show rules committee.

A good part of the Parent club session was taken with a discussion of the change in reporting of event results. AKC will no longer send a CD with all results in a PDF format to each club, but

can be purchased by the parent clubs on a monthly, quarterly or annual basis. At this time the reports for all event types will be at a cost of $320 per year. A number of clubs, especially the small ones, were concerned about the cost the data. On the positive side, it will now be in a format that can be manipulated and analyzed with various software for easier publication.

Group realignment was again discussed and it appears will be before the delegates for another vote soon. The need is obvious, but the details are still controversial.

There was also a discussion of the point schedule and efforts to make it more realistic. There has been a change recently to only consider the previous year instead of the previous three years because the declining entries do not give a true enough picture of the current situation. Also, there will continue to be

the competition.A short discussion was entertained regarding the awarding of

a three point major for reserves at national specialties where the

There was little disagreement that this should happen and it will be voted upon at the March delegates meeting.

The Health committee continues to discuss the Breeder of Merit program and the criteria for health testing. There has always seemed to be some concern about where this committees responsibility overlapped that of the CHF, Canine Health Foundation, and the Parent Club committee. This has in general minimized that the Health committees role in providing guidance to the delegate body.

In the general meeting of delegates there was an excellent presentation on the Breeder of Merit program and some data that suggests that it is gaining approval and recognition among the public. There has been a twenty one percent increase in the number of registrations from breeders enrolled in the program since last year. A small discussion of the “register every puppy rule “ ensued with several scenarios outlined that attempted to reason that entire litter registration was not always a reasonable thing to do. Finally, a delegate suggested that the simple solution was to ask puppy buyers to bring three checks when picking up their new puppy. One for the puppy, one to be sent to AKC for registration and a third to AKC CAR to register the microchip in the recovery database. This would make sure the puppy is registered by the new owner the way the breeder wants, either limited or full without burdening the breeder with the expense to register every puppy themselves.

basically saying the decline in income and registrations has not changed, but the rate has slowed slightly. Also, he outlined

largest obstacle is the lease on the property in New York that does not expire until 2018. There are many other considerations to be sure, but the conditions of the lease would not afford any savings to end it prematurely. Now the rent in New York is 1.2 million per year, but terms of the lease dictate that AKC cannot sublease the property if the landlord has other property in the city that is vacant. Apart from the lease, there would be a $425 thousand annual savings in renting the same space at the rate being paid for the facilities in Raleigh. I think it is unlikely that the New York lease will be renewed. By the time it is due many of the long time New York employees will be retired and the ability to have a much smaller footprint for media access will eliminate the reasons to stay.

The delegates voted to approve the awarding of a reserve best in show by a wide margin and also voted to not resend the rule that prohibits judges having business or employment that would

All of those people seeking positions on the AKC board were given time to address the delegate body. The theme in all the

and what they would do to right the situation. I think there are several competent people running this year, but a return to the AKC of ten years ago is not going to happen in the near future. The societal changes with respect to dog breeding and showing is deep rooted and not easily reversible, in my opinion.

On another note, the new venue for the Eukanuba show is impressive and drew huge crowds. There was more than enough room for all of the events including the “Meet the Breeds” booths. However, although there were a number of BCOA members exhibiting at the show there was no booth for Basenjis . This event should be high on the list of priorities for the BCOA given the tremendous exposure at minimal cost.

Coursing Committee by Karla Schreiber

Russ Jacobs, Judy Lange and I thought this was something (below) we should highlight to members. Two NEW ASFA titles, from the single stake! (read that: “ASFA desperately needs your dollars, all you folks with formerly DQ’d hounds!) Not sure how BCOA’s Versatility Award committee will want to handle the new titles (count them or not)... They are “sort of” competitive titles... but... ahhhhh.... Well, I happily leave that up to them. This is a big change, though, and a good opportunity to get those of us who have B’s that RUN, but don’t play well with others (or who simply don’t want to take that risk) to earn a couple of ASFA titles that are not totally meaningless (like a JC - “hey, I ran twice, with enthusiasm!”). These require a bit more consistent effort.

New ASFA Singles Stake Rules & Titles, effective January 1, 2012From Ping Pirrung, ASFA Corresponding SecretaryThe singles stake is now a regular stake which means it must be offered at all ASFA Field Trials except at Regional Invitationals, International Invitationals and Breed Specialty Trials. Since it is a regular stake the entry for the stake cannot be limited in number. You will still be able to limit the overall entry at a trial, but not just the single stake.Along with the singles stake becoming a regular stake, the ribbon to be awarded to the highest placing single shall be navy and gold at a regular ASFA Field Trial and light blue at Fun Trials. Also those hounds competing in the Singles Stake

available to hounds in the Limited Breeds.

Animal Advisory Legislation

By Vickie JacobsA quick reminder to all of the members of the Basenji Club of America. Throughout the year there are a number of legislation topics that arise that involve the welfare of our dogs and owners. Please check the AKC site once a month and look for alerts. Legislation that involves every state will be sent to our secretary and she in turn will notify the board. If you hear of local legislation that has the potential of al.tering your right as a breeder or the welfare of the breed, let us know.

Club ColumnsBasenji Club of Southeastern Wisconsin, Inc.Club News January 2012 It was wonderful to see everyone at our annual “post-holiday” lunch at the Shamrock Grill. The weather was unseasonably warm - a big change from most years. We had

Joyner’s “Penny’s” 10th birthday, and played a rousing game of Dirty Santa with people vying for cool gifts. We had lots of brags to share from 2011 in conformation, agility, obedience, rally, coursing and racing! We are enjoying kicking back a little after hosting the 2011 national; the culmination of at least 3 busy years of planning. And speaking of the national, the 2012 BCOA national specialty is coming up quick – July 9th through July 15th in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The details are on the BCOA website (www.basenji.org) – click the BCOA 2012 National Specialty link on the home page. Nice to see the BCOA 2012 National also has a Facebook page – what a great way to share information and get your questions answered! Our club’s 2012 calendar kicks off with our AKC-sanctioned Basenji B Match followed by our All Hound Fun Match on Saturday, March 31, 2012 at the Greater Racine Kennel Club, Racine, Wisconsin. Our judge is Brad Phifer, Sirobe Basenjis, from Indianapolis, Indiana. This year at the match we are also having a Rally fun run for anyone who wants to practice with

all about. The match secretary is Sandy Tucker, [email protected] at www.bcosw.org. Entries close on Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at 6 pm . Our BCOSW annual independent specialty is on Friday, July 27, 2012 at the Western Waukesha County Dog Training Club in Ixonia, Wisconsin (1/2 way between Milwaukee and Madison) with Patricia Marshall, Berimo Basenjis, for puppy and veteran sweepstakes, and respected breeder-judge Cheryl Myers-Egerton, Conamore Basenjis, from Canada judging the regular and non regular conformation and Best Bred-By Exhibitor in Specialty competition. The show chair and secretary is Lisa Marshall, [email protected]. The premium will be listed on the club website, www.bcosw.org . Entries close on Wednesday, July 11th, so mail yours early if you plan to be at the national that week. Our specialty is followed by 4 days of all breed shows. The Waukesha Kennel Club on Saturday and Sunday, July 28 and July 29, is one of the largest all breed weekends in the nation. Monday and Tuesday are the Burlington, Wisconsin Kennel Club’s shows at the very beautiful Walworth County Fairgrounds. The BCOSW supports the entry of basenjis at the Waukesha Kennel Club on Saturday, July 28. Look for our ad In the next issue of the BCOA Bulletin magazine (2nd quarter – April/May/June) for all the details on the specialty and the all breeds that follow.Did you have fun in Manitowoc, Wisconsin last fall? We had so much fun up in Manitowoc, Wisconsin during the 2011 national specialty week that BCOSW is again supporting the entry of basenjis at the Manitowoc County Kennel Club’s all breed show on Saturday, September 15th. Plan now to come up and join us for a wonderful weekend of dog showing no matter what you

and your dog like to do! Three days of agility (Friday, September 14 – Sunday, September 16) on the nicest outdoor rings I’ve ever run on, four obedience trials, four rally trials, and two days of all breed conformation – you can’t go wrong! As you are all aware, there is now a direct gene test for Fanconi Syndrome, developed at the University of Missouri by Dr. Gary Johnson and his staff, available from the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (www.offa.orgclear/carrier/affected status of a dog. The BCOA website has an announcement and FAQ about this new test. Find it at www.basenji.org in the Latest News section on the Home page. That’s all for now. Hi-Country Basenji Clubfrom Carrie Bauer We usually have a Rescue Reunion in September but the hostess, Joan Crawford, broke both of her ankles so we had to cancel the Reunion. Instead we had a Halloween party at the end of Oct. Some of the dogs and some of the owners were dressed in costume. There was also a contest to decide the best chili. Of course, we had some of our favorite events for the dogs i.e. the hotdog dunk and musical sit. As usual we had a fun time. We played, voted on the best costume, ate the

In December we had our holiday party. Kim McNeil donated neckwarmers (for humans) that she had made. The proceeds from the sale of these went to Peggy for Basenji Rescue. Thank you, Kim!! We also had a gift exchange. And as usual we had a great potluck.

The American Kennel Club strongly believes that sharing important proprietary information with its parent clubs regarding AKC registered dogs helps clubs make informative, educated and fact-based decisions regarding the future of their breeds.

Currently, the Basenji Club of America receives the New Titles of Record Reports and the AKC Electronic Stud Book subscription.

Annual Registration Statistics

In addition, we are also including the annual registration statistics for litters and dogs for your club’s breed since they are no longer published in the AKC Gazette. We realize the importance to parent clubs of knowing the number of AKC registered dogs and litters for breed analysis so the following ten years of information for your breed are included in this letter.

BASENJI CLUB OF CINCINNATINew Event for our

Saturday, May 26, 2012 SpecialtyBy Rita Ross

We have decided to expand our Sweepstakes this year, to include a Veterans Sweepstakes. This event will be open to basenjis who are 7 years & older and may be spayed or neutered. Dogs entered in Veterans Sweeps do not need to be entered in a Regular class. Our judge will be Mrs. Betsy A. Yates. If you have an “old-timer” that you would like to show off, bring them with you this year and let them have a little fun in the show ring again.

Spreading Holiday Cheer with the ROUTE 66 BASENJI CLUB

by Angela Anderson & Jessica Ryno Hello to all our friends! We want to take a small part of this month’s article to tell you about the fun we had doing our annual service project this year. Traditionally, we hold the event in December- a time of good cheer and generosity. As a group, we bounce ideas off each other, and try to take on a different project each year. In years past, our service projects

for Stray Rescue of Saint Louis, “adopting” two African Wild Dogs from The Endangered Wolf Center, collecting needed items for Stray Rescue, donating pet food items to the Humane Society, and collecting canned goods for AniMEALs on Wheels.

This year we voluntarily manned (delightfully complete with our Basenji companions) the gift-wrapping station at Barnes & Noble for which we received cash donations towards Basenji Rescue. Teams of two people and one Basenji split the shifts over the two days. One member even knitted a Santa sweater for the dog that was “working” to wear, as if having a Basenji in the store would not get everyone’s attention. People of all ages were thrilled to see the dogs. Many donated without asking us to wrap anything. All the dogs that “worked” did a wonderful job representing our breed…and the people workers were not bad either. All of the organizations that we have donated to always meet our generosity with kindness and sincere appreciation, and The Route 66 Basenji Club has established itself as a welcome and fruitful partner in caring for needy animals in the St. Louis Metro area.

Mid-Atlantic Basenji ClubThere is no time for winter rest this year at the MABC.

Thanks to several hard-working, tech-savvy members our club

It’s gratifying to see people who aren’t members connecting with us now through social media. The sites are also a great forum for posting photos of club events and making club announcements.

Club preparations for the 2012 National have been in full swing. Social media has been very useful in promoting the National, also. You can visit the National website at http://2012bcoanational.org/ and you can go to the “2012 BCOA National Specialty” Facebook page. All the events for the National have been approved, and the club is looking forward to hosting everyone for a week in July. The last and only time--as far as I know-- that the National was in Pennsylvania was 18 years ago, so we look forward to showing everyone how beautiful the Keystone State is in the summer.

The club has been holding many fundraisers to support the National. To start off the MABC sold the VA Federation of Dog Club’s annual dog show calendar in October. It turned out to be a great fundraiser. In November we began our next fundraisers. These holiday season fundraisers generated a lot of money.

The club sold porcelain holiday ornaments in a variety of Basenji designs, packets of beautifully designed Christmas cards (blank inside with Basenjis on the cover) and a 2012 Basenji puppy calendar. You may still order the ornaments from the club’s website at http://www.mabasenji.org/ . Cards will be available at the National. They may also be ordered through the club at [email protected] . We are extremely pleased at the response all the items have received from the Basenji community.

I am glad to say it has not been all work and no play for the club though. On December 11, 2011 club members got together in West Friendship, MD, for our annual Christmas party. The potluck, gift exchange and “auction” made for a festive day. Getting together with old-time club members and new people thinking of joining the club is a wonderful way to end the year.

education committee prepared for the MABC information booth

at the Canine Learning Experience in Allentown. Each year the booths are assigned a theme. This year’s theme was grooming. You can imagine our horror when tried to think of a way to showcase our easily to groom breed so people would stop at the booth to learn about Basenjis. We decided to have fun with a “Wash-N-Wear Basenji” booth--the backdrop of which featured

from a wash line. Attendees loved it and many stopped to visit with the 8 club members and 9 club Basenjis who took turns manning the booth. The CLE offers a great opportunity for our club to educate people about the breed and its wonderful qualities, quirks and need for exercise. We were thrilled that the judges loved the booth display and our informative talk on how to groom a Basenji, also. They sent us home with a second place ribbon for the booth and a check for $25.

The club will continue to keep busy through late winter and spring preparing for hosting the July National and having our own fun day in June.

AKC Approved Basenji-Breeder Judge Marianne Klinkowski on December 12, 2011

Akua is a well-built, dark red male basenji with nice bone, size and substance. He is moderately angulated front and rear and is very nicely balanced. He has a clean front, good length of upper arm and a

well crested neck. His movement is free and easy. Akua is off-square and his length is carried in his ribcage rather then his loin. He has a strong back and a level topline.

He has a well-proportioned head with good wrinkle, back skull and pigment; dark, dark almond eyes (which could be set a bit more obliquely), small, hooded ears and a show-stopper for me lovely pronounced eyebrow ridges which give his head true basenji character.

His tail is set rather high and inclines forward slightly into a full single curl.Akua is a wiggly, friendly boy with a nice temperament and a very charming yodel. His looks, temperament and character are

very typical of the breed.Rating 5 Excellent

Long-Time Breeder Stan Carter, DVM on December 30, 2011

Akua is a young, male, import of excellent quality. His temperament is superb; he greeted me with a wag and a yodel throughout his evaluation. I was impressed with his length of leg and excellent angulation, superior to most imports.

Akua’s head is very pleasing, with dark eyes and pigmentation, nicely hooded ears (could be set a little higher), and perfect scissor bite. Nice length of neck that transitioned smoothly to his shoulders. Angulation is exceptional and balanced front and rear. Unusually long upper arms, with front legs set well underneath him. Back is longer than ideal, but strong and level. Feet are quite acceptable. Markings are correct, with medium -red coat color. He had nice head carriage when moving and covered ground easily. Topline remained level, with decent reach and drive, and he single-tracked on the down and back.

My overall impression is very positive for Akua. He is a nice young male that will only improve with maturity. Superior length of upper arm and excellent angulation make his breeding potential very intriguing. Bred correctly, he could certainly impact and improve our gene pool.

Makala is a sturdy black & white basenji bitch with a glossy pure black coat. She is off-square and a little short on leg, her

lovely length of upper arm and a balanced rear with long second thigh and low hocks. She moves smoothly with a ground-covering stride. Her feet are oval but could be tighter. She has a single-curled tail carried tea cup fashion over her back. She has an attractive head with nice wrinkle and her muzzle is shorter than her skull. Her almond shaped, obliquely-set eyes are as dark as they can be and her pigment is excellent. Her ears are small and hooded. she is friendly and exceptionally alert with a great temperament and strong breed character; she is catlike with a soul-stirring yodel.

All in all, I believe that Makala is very much a basenji.Rating 3+ Good

Makala is a proper size with good proportions to her head with a nice dark eye. She is a bit wide in front but has proper bone. Her topline is soft and her neck is short. “Naziki” is a charming red & white female basenji displaying typical features of the breed ~ correct size, lightly built, nice proportions (only slightly long in loin), distinctive head (muzzle shorter than skull, almond eyes and small slightly hooded ears). She has the basenjis characteristic gait ~ a smooth, swift and tireless trot. I was concerned about her “winter nose” but then saw that the entire nose is etched with black on its borders. Rear needs shorter hock to balance her good front. Naziki has a splendid temperament and overall typey, elegant appearance. it was my pleasure to meet this sweet basenji from Africa.Rating 4 Very Good

My overall impression of this native stock female is that she possesses very good breed type and has a wonderful temperament as well. I am very impressed with the deep quality of this female basenji and believe there is no question of her adding a great deal to the basenji breed’s gene pool. I have given Nilli a Very Good (4) evaluation rating and describe below my reasoning for this rating.

Nilli has a gorgeous coat in both texture and length with the proper skin elasticity. Her head type is very nice with proper

shape of her eye should be a bit more almond. Her bite is a bit undershot but could possible correct as she continues to mature, though, that is not likely. She has a nice ear set and leathering although they should be a bit smaller. Nilli’s neck is long, well crested and well set into shoulders. She has a very nice topline with nicely set tail that could be a bit tighter as the standard call for it. Her angulation is correct and moderate, both front and rear. she did show being a bit cow hocked, but it is ever so slight and also could be age related. She stands well on her feet and her pasterns tight and correct. Nilli’s movement is sound with good reach and drive. Clearly she is a basenji bitch with good substance and 18” tall.

Again overall I believe this is a wonderful example of an import/native stock and I am excited about her future in our breed.Rating 4 Very Good

Soulé (1987) calculated a minimum effective population of 50 individuals with a generation interval of greater than 10 years for the healthy persistence of a population for up to 100 years, allowing for continual reduction of genetic variation over time. Re: Basenji Fanciers of Greater Phoenix Specialty

Dear Arnieta:

My comments in regard to judging the Sweepstakes at your Specialty acting as steward for the portion of the program is to say that I enjoyed it very much. These were excellent shows, I enjoyed the company. I particularly enjoyed my weekend visit with Joy McNulty whom I don’t get to see as often as I once did. Two old ladies had a good time catting around in the sun. Generally I thought the quality of both pups and veterans was very good.

There are three (3) areas upon which I would comment.1. Rear movement of the dogs: There were some dogs who

could be considered, “too close in the rear” or whose hocks are turned in. I suspect that some of this problem may be caused by lack of conditioning.

2. Lack of Conditioning. Some of these dogs appeared to not be in top show condition. Because you live in a part of the country where there is very hot weather it is hard to do outdoor exercise in 100 degree plus heat. I think some time and effort should be put into how to work around these high temps on the conditioning issue. Basenjis have a purpose for which they were intended and should be an excellently conditioned physical specimen, and there can be no such thing as, “over-conditioned. Good conditioning often solves other problems which are more apparent in dogs lacking condition.

3. Coat condition. It was interesting that at least in sweeps there were so many reds and white, and so few tri’s, black and whites, and brindles. Many of the coats appeared to be “wheatie.” This may be a lack of stripping out dead coats, or from not conditioning the coats of these dogs when they are bathed. This problem is more evident in the fall. You almost have to keep a dog in good coat condition all the time, even if you’re going to show them periodically, even if it takes a while to get a dog in good condition. Sometimes poor coat condition is a result of poor diet, but I doubt that is the case here. I like all of our babies to shine in the sun.

I particularly enjoyed the opportunity to steward for the regular portion of the show, as I had the best seat in the house. Always feel free to call upon me to do this if you want to, as I don’t mind a bit. I wish you the best of luck in the future.

Sincerely,

Jennie D. Behles

The 2012 Basenji Club of American National Specialty is planned (pending AKC approval) for July 9-15th. All events except lure coursing are to be held at the host hotel, the Eisenhower Hotel and Conference Center in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Mid-Atlantic Basenji Club, the host group, has planned a very full week, with something to please almost every Basenji fan. All schedules are pending AKC approval.

On Monday, a Basenjis-only agility trial is planned on-site at the All-Star Sports Center on hotel grounds. This is an indoor

After the agility trial, we have blocked off time for people to schedule various meetings. If you don’t have to attend a meeting, there is time available for those who would like to tour the local sights. We will have a message board, which you can use for meet-ups or to connect with friends.

On Tuesday we have Obedience and Rally in the ballroom in the morning, followed by a Claudia Orlandi seminar -- The ABC’s of Dog Breeding -- sponsored by the BCOA Breeders Education Committee. This seminar is popular and comes highly recommended by breeders who have attended it.

After the seminar on Tuesday evening, we have planned a
