Hello Neighbours!

Spring is just around the corner and it is one of my favourite times of year in the CKE. It is wonderful to see neighbours walking their kids to school, preparing their gardens, and taking time to enjoy the fresh air and reconnect after a long winter!

This March brings our annual, and very popular, flower fundraiser, brought to us by Growing Smiles Fundraising Flowers. Their relentless focus on quality is what brings them back year after year. All proceeds of the sale go to the CKE Community Association, and we are thankful for your support! Details are available at ckecommunity.com. It is also the beginning of gardening season! Our community gardens are such a great place to grow food, flowers, and friendships. There are still a few boxes available for rent this spring! If you are interested, please contact Sonja at [email protected].

This is also the time our neighbours register kids for Heritage Soccer – an important community program that we are hoping to bring back this year. Please stay tuned for updates and registration details on our website. If you have questions regarding soccer, or want to volunteer, you can email [email protected].

Looking ahead to the spring, we would love to recruit additional members for the CKE Community Association Board. If you have any interest, please reach out. For more information, you can contact any of us at [email protected]. This is a great opportunity to give back and help shape the future of the CKE.

Stay well, stay safe and stay in touch!

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGESt. Gerard School UpdateSubmitted by Christine

St. Gerard is a small K-6 French Immersion School in Haysboro. Like most schools, the first half of the school year has been busy and full of adjustments as we returned to in-person schooling after a spring online the previous school year. Our school community celebrated together in December with an online Christmas Show on Zoom. It was a great way to gather as a community and enjoy the songs, artwork, and dances that the students had prepared, ending the evening with a few Christmas carols. January was an interesting month, starting with a week of online learning, then back to school in person. We are currently busy planning activities that will showcase important Black Canadians throughout our history and celebrating their contributions to our nation to recognize Black History month in February. In March, during le Mois de la Francophonie and le Carnaval, we will be learning about, and celebrating French Culture, in Alberta and worldwide. This year, due to COVID-19, we will not be able to celebrate together in school-wide activities, but in their cohorts, students will listen to a variety of French musicians, experience French cultural dances and outside games, and have the opportunity to experience numerous activities that teach and celebrate la culture française! Vive le Français!

This series is focused on questions from CKE neighbours. If you’ve got questions, send them to [email protected] and they may be featured here.

There used to be pickleball at the CKE, is it coming back? The new CKE Community Courts are near completion and include two dedicated pickleball courts! Pickleball is an action-packed sport that combines elements of Badminton, Tennis, and Ping Pong, and is a fun way to get active and meet your neighbours! Stay tuned for updates on the CKE web site for spring programming. No experience required, and we supply the paddles!

A big shout out and thank you to Christina Arnold, who spearheaded the CKE Pickleball Program in 2019! Christina is taking a step back but will continue to be involved with the program. Please contact Jane Howe at [email protected] for more information about pickleball at CKE. Community member Jacqueline is looking for a couple of pickleball players to join her cohort, email [email protected].

What’s planned for the CKE Community gardens? As March arrives, the CKE Community Garden is excited for the new gardening season! And that includes planning what edibles to grow. You’ll find lots of crops growing in the community garden this year, along with permanent plantings of fruit trees and shrubs, rhubarb, herbs, and drought tolerant ornamental plants, perfect for Calgary’s climate. If you want to learn more about gardening, watch the CKE Community website, Facebook, and Instagram for upcoming workshops and events hosted by the Community Garden. And there are still a few boxes available for rent this spring! If you are interested, please contact Sonja at [email protected].

A few pro-tips from our Community Garden experts:

Timing is everything! Tomatoes, beans, and squash are examples of plants that should not be put into the garden until after the last frost, usually after the May long weekend. All can be planted as small plants, but beans and squash work well when seeded directly – they don’t like to be transplanted. Planting seeds directly just means they will take a bit longer to get to harvest. Hardier plants include lettuce, beets, and carrots. These can be seeded into the garden as soon as the soil warms up. Lettuce seedlings can be purchased, but root crops generally don’t work well as transplants. Tomatoes are best put outside as small or even fairly large plants. This gives them the head start they need to produce fruit before the end of the season, but they shouldn’t be planted until temperatures are consistently warm. Basil is even more cold sensitive and is best grown in pots for ease of shifting inside if the temperatures happen to drop. Happy gardening neighbours!

CKE News is the official newsletter of Chinook Park, Kelvin Grove, Eagle Ridge community association and distributed free to all residents and businesses 12 issues per year. Circulation is approximately 3000 issues monthly.

Dear Friends,

Although March is typically the month with the highest level of snowfall, spring is within reach, and longer, warmer days are just around the corner.

This month is prep time for the big spring melt. To ready your home for this season of gardening, make sure you have cleared gutters and downpipes, and consider using rain barrels, which are an affordable, eco-friendly, and simple way to collect and re-use rainwater to keep your greenery hydrated. As spring nears, don’t forget to check irrigation systems, sump pumps, and sealing around window wells in your basement.

With spring break only weeks away, consider supporting local businesses and exploring the incredible beauty right here in Alberta. While travel plans have been put on hold for many over the last year due to the pandemic, it’s certainly been an opportunity to explore our own backyards and take in the pristine wilderness, parks, and pathways in and around Calgary. Thank you for supporting our local businesses through this incredibly difficult time. It is really these small businesses that are the heartbeat of our communities and they are absolutely calling in the favour right now for your support.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day to all of our Calgarians of Irish descent this month. As one of the most lively and spirited celebrations of the year, I look forward to your photos of how you indulged in the green-themed festivities this year.

Each day I look forward to advocating for the residents of our amazing Ward 11 communities. I am so fortunate to serve as your city councillor, and please do not hesitate to reach out to me at any time if there is any way I can be of assistance to you at [email protected] or 403-268-2476.

Respectfully Yours,

Dear friends and neighbours,

March has arrived – typically this month brings snowfalls followed by warm, sunny days getting us all anxious for the arrival of Spring!

I want to first update you on the COVID-19 vaccination rollout in Alberta. Our province has consistently been a leader among vaccine deployment. However, Ottawa has put a wrench in our ability to get vaccines into the arms of Albertans due to limited supply. Please know that we will continue to get shots into the arms of our most vulnerable and those on the frontlines as fast as we can be supplied with vaccines.

To every single Albertan that has expressed concern about the 1976 Coal Policy, we hear you and thank you for being engaged and passionate. Alberta’s government is listening to Albertans by reinstating the entirety of the 1976 Coal Policy after concerns were raised about mining in the Eastern Slopes. We will be engaging in full consultation to create a modern coal policy for Alberta.

Finally, Alberta has received its second positive grade for red tape reduction from the Canadian Federation of Independent Business – an “A”! We are glad to see that Alberta is the most improved province in Canada when it comes to red tape reduction – a strategy that, when done right, saves Albertans both time and money. If you have any ideas about how Alberta can further reduce red tape, please share them at CutRedTape.Alberta.ca.

As the daylight hours lengthen, I hope you’re able to continue to take advantage of all the parks available in Calgary-Glenmore and find your pot of gold on St. Patrick’s Day.

I wish all in the Jewish community a Happy Passover.

As always, it is an honour to serve as your MLA.

Sincerely,Whitney IssikMLA for Calgary-Glenmore

Canada today is divided like never before. We face a crisis of confidence regarding not just specific policies, but the very foundations of our democracy. Increasingly, we hear calls to suppress views some self-appointed arbiters may regard as wrong-headed or harmful. This is exactly the opposite of what is needed. The best cure for division is more free speech, not less.

Some argue that we should just trust science. But labelling something science cannot put it beyond questioning. The credibility of science rests on open debate. Not long ago, repugnant theories about race and other now discredited ideas reflected the scientific consensus of the day. It was only open, often acrimonious debate that resulted in their overwhelming rejection.

In a diverse society, harmony must be built on the solid foundation that only open debate can provide. Vigorous discussion of both goals and methods must be encouraged. The reason Parliament has an Official Opposition to critique government policy is that it makes policy better, and the freedom to criticize increases the legitimacy of the outcome. But free speech must not end at the doors of Parliament. It must infuse our whole society.

Free speech is messy, but it is what makes our society strong. We must all do our part. Governments must stop subsidizing media they find congenial and freezing out those they dislike. Courts must limit libel chill. Educators must prepare students to debate and to differentiate between reality and rhetoric. Journalists must spread understanding, not sensationalism. And ordinary Canadians must accept being offended at times as the price of living in a society where we are not afraid to seek, and to stand up for, the truth.

Please take my online survey at www.bobbenzenmp.ca and let me know your thoughts on this and other issues.

1. Immune healthVitamin C supports a healthy immune system; along with frequent

hand-washing are two of the easiest steps to take for staying healthy.

2. Heart healthVitamin C is required to make healthy collagen. Lysine makes

collagen stronger. A lack of vitamin C and lysine results in poor collagen and weak arteries. Coronary arteries are under more pressure

than any other artery in the body. Without sufficient vitamin C and lysine, the constant pounding causes minute cracks in collagen, contributing to cardiovascular concerns.

3. Wound healing, cold sores, and shingles.Lysine helps reduce the severity and duration of cold sores, and combined with vitamin C, promotes wound healing and helps fight shingles infections. Collagen also keeps skin looking youthful, and keeps gums and cartilage healthy too.

I recommend Medi-C Plus® with vitamin C and lysine – just mix with your morning water or juice. I started taking a high dose of vitamin C and lysine after my heart attack 23 years ago. I am turning 97 this year, still writing, active, and taking Medi-C Plus daily!
