GREEtINGS MEMBERSThis is an important time of year for the American Whippet Club . Board elections are just around the corner and our National Specialty will be here before you know it . The Board has been busy preparing for both .

Secretary Cindy Scott will be mailing out ballots with the list of nominees and their bios to eligible voting members by March 1st . Make sure to read each of the bios and then cast your votes for the Board of Directors election . This is one of the privileges of membership in this club yet is often overlooked . Please be sure to follow all of the directions on the ballot to ensure that your vote counts .

Sue Carbajal and her team are preparing to welcome the masses of the Whippet faithful to Eugene, Oregon in April for the National Specialty . If you haven’t already made plans to join us now is the time to start . There is always something for everyone and this year is no different . Remember, entries for the National close earlier than regular shows and the deadline is March 20th; don’t be left out!

president’s messagePlease remember to pay your dues if you haven’t done so already . Payments should be sent to Treasurer Gail Boyd, 8948 Hope Hill Lane, Apex, NC 27502 by the April 1st grace period deadline . You may also use the PayPal option which can be found on the home page of the AWC website at: www.americanwhippetclub.net

Hug your Whippets!

editor’s notesAll AWC members in good standing will soon be receiving the list of nominees and ballot for the Board of Directors election . If you paid your dues by January 1st you are eligible to vote, so please take the time to read about each nominee and mark your ballot and return it . The results will be announced at the April annual meeting at the National in Eugene .

For those of you who didn’t come to the National in Eugene a few years ago, you’re in for a treat this year . It’s one of the very best National Specialty venues we’ve had in the past and while like most dog people, our brains are usually completely absorbed with what’s going on in the ballroom, a quiet walk along the Willamette River just adjacent to the hotel is a lovely way spend some free time .

A last minute note from Secretary Cindy – Longtime AWC member Kathy Davenport had a very nasty fall in her

driveway and broke multiple bones on February 19th . She is having several surgeries to repair the damage . She and will be out of commission for quite a while . We wish her a speedy recovery and I’m sure she would appreciate cards . You can send them to:

SHOW CHaIR REPORt

2013 EUGENE NATIONALGeez, it’s getting close . Don’t forget to get your catalogs and order your logo items whether you are coming or not . We can always ship .

Sue Carbajal and her committee are doing an awesome job and plan to put on a spectacular National .

Remember the early deadline for entries is March 20 .

Hope to see a lot of you there .

2014 HUNT VALLEY NATIONALThis is a message from Pauline Oliver who was elected to judge the National next year:

This is to all of the people that so kindly voted for me to judge their Whippets at your most prestigious show, a show that I have loved to come to and visit a few times now. I feel so honored and extraordinarily lucky that the Whippet folk have given me the chance to give my opinion on our beautiful breed in your country. Goodness, I have still not come back down to earth and I have known a few weeks now. The only downside to being in my present position is not to be able to enjoy the social side of meeting with all the friends that I have made over the years…well, not until the end that is. ~Pauline

Cindy

2013 NatIONal CHaIR REPORtTime flies – and the 2013 National is just about upon us .

Not all of the forms are in this issue of The Whippet News as with recent past issues . Everything is available in the Premium List, or online via the BaRay site or the 2013 AWC Website; you can access what you need from any of these places . If you need help, shoot an email off to me or to Cindy .

There are a few things I would really like to stress to you:I have a waiting list for rooms at the hotel . PLEASE do not cancel your reservation if you find you have a change in plans . Let me know so I can arrange to put these people who are being patient into your room . It is very important that we keep our block full .

4 | THE WHiPPET NEWS FEBRuARy 2013

Also, prepay and order in advance . It is so helpful to us with planning . You don’t want to arrive and not have a catalog, or a shirt of your choice, or a banquet ticket, or items for the Top Twenty evening .

Carry or send items for the raffle table . We have some great items coming in . You have some wonderful things hiding in those dark places you seldom frequent in your house . Take a flashlight in there and see what treasures you can add to the raffle . If you haven’t seen it or used it in five years, you will never miss it . And someone might just think it is the coolest addition ever to their home . We accept every kind of item – doesn’t have to be “doggie .”

If you have made a pledge to the trophy fund, it is time to pay up . You can pay via PayPal or put a check in the mail . And, THANK YOU .

Check out the separate information for Lure Coursing and Agility . The links are on the AWC National website . Everything is close to the host hotel .

For gosh sake, DON’T FORGET TO ENTER YOUR DOG(S)! You can do that now and have it off your mind . When you look at the catalog and don’t see your dog listed you won’t be able to say the show chair didn’t remind you . And, this won’t be the end of the nagging coming at you . How nice for you to not have to read my next sixteen posts about doing your entries because you have already gotten yours in . Hooray!

Here are email addresses and websites that you will find helpful as you plan your trip:

HEy dOC, I NEEd My EyES ExaMINEd!!As many of you know, there are now two different eye registries for heritable ocular disease in dogs . The one we are all familiar with and have used in the past, CERF, and the new kid in town, the OFA Eye Certification Registry . There has been some confusion about the two registries as they relate to our dogs and to the AWC requirement for the Futurity .

Without going into detail (a more inclusive report was published in the September issue of The WN), the ACVO will be endorsing the OFA eye registry as its recommended database (although) ACVO examiners may submit eye registrations to either OFA or the CERF programs . The creation of the OFA database will allow ACVO’s to more fully utilize the data to help breeders make more informed decisions about heritable disease .

Regardless of whether the owner opts to register eye exam results with the OFA, the examining ophthalmologist will submit the results for statistical purposes to monitor disease prevalence and progression at the breed level . Working with the ACVO Genetics Committee, the OFA will make aggregate statistics available to ACVO Diplomates, breed clubs, and the public .

There will be no change to existing exam protocols and the standard exam will still be performed by qualified ACVO diplomats .

There will be no changes to the interpretation of classification of the exam results .

Dogs with normal eyes will receive OFA numbers similar to those issued for hips, elbows, cardiac, thyroid, etc .

Dogs with observable but passing conditions (currently known as Breeder Option codes) will be issued notated OFA numbers . All results will be available online .

Non-passing results will only be available if the owner authorizes permission .

OFA numbers will be shared with AKC if the dog was permanently identified at the time of the exam .

This exam will fulfill the requirement for the Futurity

Vendor Update: We have one space available. We had some things happen like puppies coming, etc. that changed some plans. First come, first served. Contact Kim Newell, Vendor Chair, at [email protected].

Hotel: I have a pretty long waiting list for rooms—but, I’m not hearing about people wanting to cancel. PLEASE let me know if you plan to let your room go. I even have some partial weeks I am trying to work with in order to accommodate as many people as possible. Hopefully, this means everyone is solid on their commitment to attend. HOORAY.

raffle: Don’t forget to carry your items with you to the show—or ship them to me. Sue Carbajal, 626 Horizon Road, Eugene, OR 97405. The raffles give a big fund boost to the costs of putting on these shows. It is an easy way for you to contribute and think how great it will be to see that back wall of the closet.

Also, stick those return address labels we all get in the mail into your suitcase. They provide an easy way to put your name on the back of raffle tickets—and, we can easily read them when the time comes to award the item. :>)

VolUnteer: Let me know if you would like to do a short time period at the raffle table, helping in hospitality, helping the grounds crew, etc. It takes a whole lot of happy, willing people to put on a National. Be part of the fun.

Be on top of yoUr pUrcHase planning: Do everything you can online via PayPal or by mailing a check to the person in charge of the area. Most of the forms are not here in The Whippet News for February since they are now available in the Premium List—or the PL online at BaRay—or on the 2013 website. I can’t stress enough how much it helps us in planning or how glad you will be to get here and have everything paid in advance. Don’t put it off and run the risk of not getting the shirt of your choice, or your catalog, or a banquet ticket, or Top Twenty event tickets along with the great Wine Tasting—and Top Twenty Raffle tickets.

entries: Along with everything else on your mind as you plan your trip—don’t forget to enter your dogs. My gosh, what a shock to get here, look in the catalog and you don’t see the name of the best dog in the world. You meant to do it, didn’t you????? Entries close on March 20. Do it online at the BaRay site—or get them in snail mail. One more box checked on your to do list before the show.

The Wrap reporttHE dOvER 8by Mimi Dygert (WRAP NY), Brenda Malick (WRAP NY) and Janet Curtis (WRAP PA)

In November 2012, the caretaker of eight Whippets became ill and no longer was able to care for them. WRAP stepped in to help. This is the story of The Dover 8 – Yeller, Bently, Solicity, Blondie, EJ, JJ, Mercedes and Honey.

Mimi: as told in yeller’s words.... It was getting cold outside . Not so much during the daylight, but the nights found us all curling our tails very tightly over our noses . Ten years earlier, I was a star . The “Others” were outside and I was privileged to live inside with my human folk . Then things changed .

I no longer went for long glorious rides in the gussied up “dog vans” and no longer did my brief but glorious jaunts around the show ring, followed by very loud applause . I loved the limelight! And then it all ended . At first, it was okay since I was pretty young . I imagined catching the rabbits and other furry creatures just beyond my reach near the creek that ran past the house . But the days stretched to weeks, the weeks to months and then years . I was alone in a fenced dog run with a “heated” doghouse . I could see others of my kind nearby, who pretty much had the same stuff to look forward to – which was pretty much nothing . I vaguely remembered chasing a ball and playing with furry toys . The others, now I know, were: Solicity, Bently, Blondie, EJ, JJ, Mercedes, Honey & me, Yeller .

One day a large vehicle arrived and looked like a van we all used to go riding in . . .it was not as fancy, but it opened and a girl got out with a clipboard and a mass of plastic

collars . One by one, I watched as the “others” around me were tagged, collared and gently loaded into the van . It was very quiet . Then I heard a voice say “Oh, there is one more male over here .” The girl rounded the corner of one of the houses and exclaimed, “Oh, it’s a puppy!” The voice said, “No, this male is twelve years old .” The girl was visibly shocked but was careful to quickly cover up her feelings . I was so thin and wobbly that I looked like a young pup . She carefully tagged and collared me too . Apparently, we had all been given a rather large breakfast, because by the time we reached our destination 2 hours later, we had all barfed and pooped all over everything . What a mess! But the girl went about her tasks and cleaned us up . We all got new kennels in a barn heated by what I learned later, is a wood burning stove . It was glorious and WARM . We all slept so well it was hard to tell there were any dogs in the barn . There were the 8 of us, and 10 others already living in the barn . There was a spacious dog run out back and we were all able to stretch our legs and actually run!

For a number of days we all played ball and enjoyed the nicer weather . Then the group took one more trip, everyone but me and another guy, Bently, went to live in other foster homes . Eventually, I went to live in a great home in NY – a couple with their own business, who take me and their other Whippets to work with them! Bently went to live with a couple who recognized his breeding from old acquaintances way back when . . .he is much loved .

The WrAp reportContinued from page 16

BrendaIt was early the Sunday following Thanksgiving Day, and I was pleased that I could fit four big crates in the new car! We made a quick stop at the bagel place to pick up coffee and bagels and off to my vet’s clinic to meet Mimi and “The Dover 8 .” This is a trip I have made too often the last few years – meeting Mimi to help a group of Whippets turned in by irresponsible breeders casting off unwanted Whippets, but that is another story . I love my vet and have for the past 40 years . He has always done all he could to help me and the Whippets and rescue too . Once again, he proved this by meeting us on Sunday to do a group of 7 (the 8th was a monorchid) spays/neuters, teeth, etc . The surgeries all went well and by about 1 pm, we said goodbye to Doc and Mimi, and loaded up six very groggy Whippets for the next leg of the adventure .

Two sweet beautiful girls would stay with me to be fostered and placed . Mercedes and Honey were taken home and settled into bed . Then off to Scranton, PA to meet Janet Curtis, the WRAP PA Volunteer who has always been the best to help in many of these multiple Whippet rescues cases . We can always count on Janet!

Now, I was down to 4 Whippets in the car . I met Janet at a McDonald’s to give her EJ and Blondie, the seniors we already had homes for, and Solicity and JJ whom she was going to foster . Janet would have JJ neutered at her great low-cost clinic . I felt so bad knowing these Whippets had been neglected and living outside . And after being treated for fleas at Mimi’s the combination of the surgery, flea preventative and various other secretions – let’s just say they did not smell pretty – I once again appreciated Janet’s dedication as we loaded them in her two-day-old NEW Lexus . At least my car was a few months old! We said our goodbyes and drove off to go home . A long but rewarding day!

My new fosters Mercedes and Honey, having never really been lead-broken, did amazingly well . In about 2 days, they were in my routine . I have to give the girls credit with all they had been through . They were cooperative and sweet and inquisitive of living in a house . My biggest surprise and the hardest thing to deal with was they now hated to be outside! I mean outside at all! The girls were saying, “NO, don’t want to go there – we really like this house thing and the couch and thick beds are a luxury

that we now love!” They probably thought once outside, they were not ever going to be allowed back in! So after that setback and the house training, they were really good girls . The applications began to roll in .

Honey was so stable and docile, she was the first to go . She went to a wonderful couple in Bridgewater MA . The couple also had a rescue greyhound and a fenced yard, and they drove six hours one-way to pick her up . After a few bumps in the road, Honey has a wonderful new home and her favorite spot is on their couch!

So many people wanted Mercedes! She is that beautiful fawn brindle color that everyone loves . Because she needed some work, I decided on a wonderful home with a woman that was very knowledgeable . She had lived with Whippets her whole life and had a house with a big fenced yard . I felt this was a perfect home for Mercedes . She lives with a wonderful retired woman and with two other Whippets in Southampton on Long Island, in NY .

The WrAp reportContinued from page 18

JanetNow for my part of the story: EJ and Blondie went to great homes . EJ lives with a vet in MD and Blondie in now lives in Lancaster, PA with a boy Whippet to keep her company . She really loves this new life she has .

Like Brenda’s girls, my crew wanted nothing to do with being outside unless I was with them . It didn’t take them long to figure out that I was a kind human and they could get back to comfy warm crates . I had JJ neutered and waited for the applications to come in, but there were problems on the web site with their listings, so I had them for a month before I placed JJ, who is now living with a senior female in Harleysville, PA .

As I write this I am working with a home in Alexandria, VA for Solicity – who thought she was going to own my house by marking . I TOLD her that I owned the house and she has been an angel ever since . “City” now has the freedom of the house while we are home and sleeps in bed with us .

All four of the dogs I took in were very sweet and starving for attention . I just knew they would place well . This is one of the happier-ending group Whippet stories, not all of them are as well socialized as these but again that is another story .

I want to thank Mimi and Brenda for being there for these Whippets and getting the ball rolling . We can call ourselves “The 3 Whippeteers .”

All eight Whippets were successfully placed in new homes by this team of dedicated WRAP volunteers.

superintendentRau Dog Shows – www.raudogshows.comcloses Feb 27

I met Dee Evans at the turn of the century in the year 2000 . She had been involved in showing and breeding Whippets under the kennel name of Foxford for many years . She was also very involved with Whippet Rescue and Placement . At that time, I had just moved south and was in search of a group of people interested in racing their Whippets . Carolina Lure Coursing Society was game and we started running under the auspices of the Whippet Racing Association (WRA) the North American Oval Track Association (NOTRA) .

Dee caught the racing bug right away, and successfully ran her show-bred dogs for several years (even getting a few championship points on a couple of them!) She helped with the growth of Whippet racing in the South by helping to start two new clubs: Sighthounds on the Lam (SOL) in Camden, SC, and Southern Whippets and Gazehounds (SWAG) in Mocksville, NC . Wanting to be a little more competitive, Dee joined the world of race-bred Whippets and started racing with gusto! When Dee fell ill, she expressed her desire to go to as many race meets as possible, with the goal to have her group of three boys, Striker, Carlton, and Blaze meet their potentials as racers . I began traveling with her to race meets from Jacksonville, FL to Anderson, IN . Along the way, she finished one Oval Racing Champion (Striker), and put points on her other boys .

Dee’s favorite place to race was in Jacksonville, Florida with SOMOS (Southern Most Sighthounds) . The club holds an annual Winter NOTRA Derby in February of each year . This year a new perpetual trophy was offered in Dee’s honor . It is called “The Dee Evans Determination Award”, and is awarded to the oldest Whippet completing the meet that has oval racing points, but has not completed its championship .

When Dee passed on February 1st, 2013, the Whippet world lost a good friend who contributed to nearly every aspect of Whippets . She was a careful breeder, a gracious competitor in the show ring, coursing field and race track, and she remained committed to rescue to the end . Dee requested that contributions in her honor be sent to Whippet Rescue and Placement, 12035 West Brown Deer, Milwaukee, WI . 53224 .

Respectfully, Joanne Stewart
