Call for Agenda Items from the membership

If you have new business you would like to bring before the members at the Annual meeting, please send those in writing to me no later than Friday April 7th. This will allow us to prepare the documents needed for the meeting. While a member may bring up any new business at the meeting – be aware that those agenda items submitted in advance will take priority and be discussed first. There is a limited amount of time for the meeting and we appreciate your consideration in this. Note: Since our President, Harold Tatro, is also our judge this year, he has decided to abstain from attending the Annual meeting and our Vice President, Karen Lee, will serve as the chair person for the Annual meeting.

BEHAVE! by Sarah Filpiak

Whippet fanciers who breed and raise litters, handle puppies for others or who have had several of

our own puppies can take puppy socialization for granted. We have our routines and know our puppies’ temperaments, and give plenty of advice to new puppy owners along the way.

Still, a review never hurts, and may be helpful to people who are living with their first puppies, or know people who will be taking home a new pup. For breeders who show their dogs, Jane Killion of Madcap Bull Terriers offers the Puppy Culture series (http://puppyculture.com), which covers important concepts in puppy socialization and show ring training, starting from whelping day.

If you often see new puppy owners and would like an electronic copy of the below information to personalize and share with clients, please e-mail [email protected].

How to socialize your whippet puppy When does socialization begin? The socialization process for whippet puppies begins the day

they are born. Your pup’s breeder has a plan for daily neonatal handling of the litter. He or she works to ensure each puppy encounters new surfaces, objects, and people. If you’re wondering how much handling is enough, Dr. Ian Dunbar recommends that by eight weeks of age, puppies have been handled by at least 100 people!

You must continue to socialize your puppy after you bring him home. The window for a dog’s socialization to people continues until 15 weeks or so. During this time, your puppy must be  introduced to a variety of people, objects, places and experiences.

Speak to your veterinarian about which experiences are safe for your puppy until her vaccinations are complete.

How old should your puppy be when you bring her home? Puppies should stay with the breeder until at least 7 or 8 weeks

of age. Many breeders choosing show prospects will keep puppies longer, to let them develop a little more.

If your breeder keeps the puppies past eight weeks, he or she must pick up where the owner normally would take over socialization and training.

The fear period Puppies go through a sensitive stage between 8 to 11 weeks

(sometimes earlier or later, depending on the individual dog). During this time, it’s important that you give your puppy plenty of time and space to explore unfamiliar objects, people and places on her own. Don’t force her into anything!

It’s also important during this time not to expose your puppy to trauma. Avoid any restraint or procedure that could upset your pup. Stay away from people who might scare or harm the puppy, and strange dogs whose behavior with young puppies is unknown.

How do I socialize my whippet puppy? If you’re interested in using a formal

socialization protocol,  Operation Socialization (http://operationsocialization.com) and Puppy Culture (http://puppyculture.com) offer a complete program for socializing your new puppy.

You want your puppy to learn that a new person, object or experience means only good things happen, or that nothing bad happens. This way, your pup can distinguish threats from

normal activity throughout her life.

Here is a short checklist of exercises to complete with your whippet puppy:

• Voluntary approach of children of all ages (at least 30 different kids offering treats)

• Voluntary approach men (at least 30 different men offering treats)

• Voluntary approach women (at least 30 different women offering treats)

• Voluntary approach people in wheelchairs, using canes or other walking equipment, in unusual dress, etc. (at least 10 different people offering treats)

• Regular car rides (at least once per week to somewhere other than the vet’s office)

• Resource guarding prevention training• Handling exercises, ex., touch a paw/feed a treat (at least three

times per week)• Exposure to a variety of surfaces (grass, concrete, wood floors,

tile floors, carpet, etc.)• Exposure to livestock at a safe distance• Play (with frequent breaks) with other puppies and adult

dogs  who are known to be safe with puppies• Crate training• Dog shows (once vaccinations are complete)

When is socialization finished? Experts agree that the socialization window for puppies is fairly

short, and closes around 15 weeks. But your whippet puppy will continue to mature, physically and mentally, until 2 years of age. Continue your puppy’s introductions to new people and places, and

You want your puppy to learn that a new person, object or

experience means only good things happen, or that nothing bad

happens.

provide plenty of reinforcement for appropriate behavior during this time.

Many dogs experience what is sometimes called a “second” fear period, between 6 and 12 months. This sensitive period resembles the first fear period at 8 to 11 weeks. If your pup has a frightening or traumatic experience during this time, it could have a lifelong effect. If your dog displays occasional nervousness or fear, maintain a cheerful demeanor, offer treats for relaxed behavior, and let him explore at his own pace.

16 v The Whippet News March 2017

Recently, AKC rules changed and now online (electronic) voting for elections and other matters that can be balloted is allowed for Par-ent Clubs. In anticipation of this decision, the AWC added the ap-propriate language to its By-Laws when they were revised a couple of years ago, so we can now implement online voting. The AKC requires that any Club conducting online elections must have written authorization kept on-file with the Secretary for each mem-ber who will be voting online. This consent can be revoked at any time by a written statement sent to the AWC Secretary.

The Board feels that online voting, conducted by an independent third-party organization which specializes in this voting method, is cost-effective, secure and ergonomically sound. However, we will only adopt this voting method if a solid majority of the member-ship wishes to vote electronically. To date, the Secretary has re-ceived authorization forms from a little over 160 members, so we are still some ways from the majority needed to implement Elec-tronic Balloting.

The members of the AWC Board of Directors decided to investigate the costs and feasibility of electronic balloting for future AWC elec-tions. It appears, the cost of electronic balloting by a company that will handle both electronic ballots and the hard copy ballots for the members who need/choose to get them will not be any more ex-pensive or only slightly more expensive than the hard copy ballots that are the current method by which Club elections are held. Cur-rent elections cost the Club somewhere between $1100.00 and $1600.00 depending on printing, copying, and handling fees. An estimate received from an electronic balloting company was for approximately $1575.00.

Please take the time to consider this format for elections. Elec-tronic balloting companies assure the integrity of the elections they hold for their clients. It is also an ergonomically sound direc-tion for the Club to head. If you are willing to vote electronically in future Club elections, please fill out and return this form. Hard copy ballots can still be used by those individuals in the Club who do not have computer access or those who opt not to vote elec-tronically, with hard copy ballots to be tabulated by the same com-pany that would tabulate the electronic votes.

American Whippet Club Electronic Balloting Authorization Form

I, ___________________________________________ (Please Print) agree to use electronic balloting as the method by which I shall cast votes in those AWC elections deemed appropriate for this type of balloting by the AWC Board of Directors. By my signature below, I agree to release the AWC from any liability should any ballot be received late or not received by me due to circumstances be-yond the AWC’s control.

I understand that I can revoke this authorization by submitting a statement in writing to the AWC Secretary at any time.
