President’s Message

Even though it will be well into January by the time you read this, I want to wish everyone a healthy, prosperous and happy new year.

The 2011 National Specialty is less than three months away. Please don’t forget to make reservations or to send a trophy donation if you are so inclined to do so. Complete infor-mation on the host hotel and trophies is elsewhere in the newsletter.

Speaking of the National, congratulations to Dr. Connie Brunkow on being elected from a strong slate of very worthy individuals to judge the 2012 National in Ohio.

The Nominating Committee has proposed a slate of six individuals for the upcoming Board election of the Class of 2014. If you paid your dues for this year by January 1st you will be able to vote for up to three of those individuals in the elec-tion. The names of any members who may be duly nominated by five members in good standing will be included on the final slate sent to the membership next month.

If you have had difficulty connecting to the AWC web-site recently it may have been because it is in the process of undergoing some changes. Donna Lynch has volunteered to oversee this process with hopes of a cleaner looking and easier to navigate site. Please bear with those involved while these changes are being made because there may be times when the site is not fully accessible.

Last month the Board had the regrettable task of act-ing as the Hearing Committee for charges brought against a member for conduct prejudicial to the best interests of the breed. We determined the charges were valid and suspended the member from the club for a six month period. If this mem-ber decides to renew their membership the final determination of their fate as a member of the club will be put to a vote of the members present at the annual meeting in Kentucky.

Speaking of members on a much more positive note, the Board recently acted on the applications of ten individuals. I would like to welcome Lynn Baker, Jennifer Brisbois, Susan Crosby, Lori Mauger, Sara New, Linda Ohl, Leah Perry, Denise Sisneroz, Jennifer Smith, and Carol Zienert as the newest members of the AWC.

Take care and have fun with your Whippets. Russell

SECRETARY’S REPORT

The Nominating Committee has provided the slate for the class of 2014. The nominees are Scot Northern, Jean Schroeder and Lori Lawrence, incumbents running for office again are Lisa Costello, Cindy Scott and Donna Lynch. The AWC bylaws state — Additional nominations of eligi-ble members may be made by written petition addressed to the Secretary and received at his regular address on or be-fore February 15th, signed by five members and accompa-nied by the written acceptance of each such additional nominee signifying his willingness to be a candidate.

Cindy Scott

AWC National 2011 Would you believe that the National starts in less than 3 months? The website is up to date and has tons of information out there plus we have PayPal set up for almost everything. Once again we will be using the fantastic pottery of High Horse Farm, Amy Romaniec. In Atlanta she added peaches and this year she will be add-ing horses. We rely heavily on support from the Whippet community for trophies and this year is no exception. I know the economy has affected all of us but anything you can contribute is greatly ap-preciated. Our ASFA trial will be the official event for coursing at the National and to sponsor a flight (we are ex-pecting around 15 including Open, FCh and Veter-ans). If you would like to sponsor a flight it will be $85 for 1st thru NBQ. For any and all donations you can send a check made out to the AWC to Jan Swayze-Curry at 205 Elbert Frankum Rd. Colum-bia, KY 42728 or you can go to www.awc2011.com <http://www.awc2011.com/> and donate thru PayPal. Also, there is only one raffle this year and the pro-ceeds will be split between AWC, WRAP and the Whippet Health Foundation. If you have some-thing to donate for the raffle, please contact Mary Alderman at [email protected] and either send the items to her or bring them to the National with you.

THANK YOU!!! Cindy Scott, National Showchairman

FUTURITY REPORT As I reported last month, Mr. Calvin Perry will be judging the 2011 Futurity in Lexington, Kentucky, not Louisville as I wrote last month. Sorry for the confusion. The National will be here before we know it! The 2011 Futurity will be held on Tuesday, April 5, 2011. Futurity entries must also be entered in a Regular Class, per a vote by the General Member-ship in 2006. Enter Futurity as an Additional Class and put the age division in the Additional Class blank. Entry into the Futurity Class is considered the individual nomination for that puppy. Class divisions for Futurity are different than regular classes. The divisions are as follows: 6 months & under 8 months, 8 months & under 10 months, 10 months & under 12 months, 12 months & under 14 months and 14 months & under 18 months. Contact me if you have questions about this. Don’t forget, all puppies are not eligible for the Futurity. Only pup-pies out of litters nominated by the breeder are eligible for the Fu-turity. The 2011 Futurity dates range from 10/21/09 to 10/5/10. As always, I will acknowledge receipt of all nominations and if you need help or have some unusual circumstances, give me a call, but please not after 9 p.m. Central Time. Best of luck with your puppies! Kathy Slater, Futurity Chairman [email protected] 241 Prairietown Rd., Dorsey, IL 62021 618-585-4677

THYROID STUDY The Whippet Health Foundation, Inc. in conjunction with Michigan State University Diagnostic Center for Population and Animal Health (MSU-DCPAH), will be

funding a Research project for Whippets. Dr. Ken-neth Latimer will be the WHF Study Coordinator. See below for edited project details. RESEARCH PROJECT: Determination of refer-ence ranges for healthy Whippets using the Michigan State University Diagnostic Center for Population and Animal Health (MSU-DCPAH) thyroid profile. Background: There is a growing body of data showing that Greyhounds and Salukis have some thyroid hormone values that are lower than estab-lished reference ranges. The Whippet Health Foundation, Inc. is funding a study to determine normal Whippet thyroid values. Dr. Mary Dee Sist was contacted to give them advice on how best to proceed. Her work and experience with Salukis could be applicable to another sighthound breed. Purpose: To determine a reference range for con-centrations of thyroid hormones in Whippets using the MSU-DCPAH thyroid profile (including both free T4 by dialysis and the two-step free T4 assay). Benefit to DCPAH and Whippet Health Foundation, Inc.: Reference ranges for some thyroid hormones in selected sighthounds have been found to be lower than in other breeds of dogs. The proposed study will aid in seeing if a breed variation exists and finding accurate criterion for the diagnosis of thyroid disease in Whippets. Assays (including both FT4 by dialysis and two-step) will be per-formed, provided that all of the samples can be analyzed in one batch. It would also be invaluable to have a pool of samples from healthy dogs to compare the free T4 results by different assays. Personnel responsible: Whippet Health Foundation, Inc. 1. Funding of project 2. Arranging for collection of samples 3. Assurance of proper sample handling and data recording 4. Shipment of samples and forms with health his-tories to Dr. Sist at DCPAH 5. Assure that at least 100 samples are obtained from healthy Whippets

Dr. MaryDee Sist (via DCPAH) 1. Centrifugation and harvesting serum from sam-ples 2. Properly identifying and storing the samples until assays are performed 4. Transfer of samples to Ms. Beyerlein for analy-ses 5. Assure that samples are analyzed in a timely manner and data disseminated to the Foundation and owners of the dogs. Interpretation of individual dog results will be included after the analysis of the data is complete. DCPAH 1. Analyze samples in timely manner and deliver the data to Dr. Sist 2. Write up summary and conclusions for publica-tion in a Whippet publication Blood samples will be drawn during the week of the AWC National Specialty in Lexington, Kentucky. For a Whippet to be in the study it is important is that it not be on any medication that could influence thy-roid function, not have any significant illness and not have any signs that could be associated with hypothyroidism. The owner will need to complete a form with information on the Whippet and will be receive the results of their dog’s results. PRE-BREEDING HEALTH TESTING RECOM-MENDATIONS The WHF has approved the following pre-breeding screening recommendations for Whip-pet breeders. These recommendations are posted on the WHF website www.whippethealth.org PRE-BREEDING SCREENING The following pre-breeding health screenings have been recommended by the Whippet Health Founda-tion (WHF) and accepted by the American Whippet Club. These tests have been accepted by the Ca-nine Health Information Center (CHIC) for whippets to acquire CHIC certification. In addition, your Whip-pet must be recorded in the WHF open database. Obtaining a CHIC number is an option for owners. Because CHIC will not accept direct test or certifica-

tion results from the Whippet Health Foundation da-tabase, the echocardiogram, BAER, thyroid and hip results must be sent in to OFA (Orthopedic Founda-tion for Animals). These will then be automatically viewable on your dogs individual page within the WHF database. Required: The whippet must be in the Whippet Health Foundation database CERF (yearly) Echocardiogram by a board certified cardiolo-gist (yearly) BAER (once)

Recommended: Thyroid testing by an approved lab (every other year) Myostatin Deficiency Test (once) OFA Hips OR PennHIP evaluation (once) We strongly encourage Whippet owners to submit test results to the Whippet Health Foundation open database at www.whippethealth.org. It is our hope that the WHF database becomes the most used re-source for Whippet owners searching for Whippet health records and information. MICROCHIPPING AT THE WHF HEALTH CLINICS Microchipping will be available at the WHF health clinics in Lexington, Kentucky. Look for details in the next issue of the Whippet News. It is a great opportunity to get your Whippets health tested at the AWC National Specialty this year. Owners have been outstanding in making these test results available to the WHF Open Database. Doing so enables breeders to make informed decisions about breedings to avoid doubling up on a health is-sue. We will need volunteers to help conduct the health clinics and ask for your help. Look for de-tails in the next issue of the Whippet News. Thank you to everyone for supporting the WHF Mary Beth Arthur Whippet Health Foundation www.whippethealth.org

ONE OF OUR OWN By Harriett Lee Some of our AWC mem-bers know Annie Andrews from her participation in performance events and some of us know her from her competition in the Breed ring. I asked Chris-

tine if I could write a little article about Annie, as I want folks to know what an important person you are competing with! I was fortunate to attend Annie’s Retirement Cere-mony at the Pentagon on this last December 2nd. It was held in the Hall of Heroes which was full of De-partment of Defense personnel and 30 of Annie’s Whippet friends. Mr. Joe Sikes, Director of Housing and Competitive Sourcing and Annie’s Boss, began his remarks with the following “When I say what’s it all about? – you respond Competition!” He asked the question several times during his remarks regarding Annie’s career. Annie’s Federal career began in 1976 with the Air Force as a Supply Clerk GS-03 at Hickman Field, HI. In 1977 she returned to Washington and started working at the Pentagon as a Secretary for the Strategic Air Command’s strategic office; from there she spent a year with the National Reconnaissance Office. Always moving upward, she then worked with the Air Force Personnel Plans as a general officer personal Secre-tary. From there she moved out of the secretarial field and became an Intelligence War Planning Officer with the Air Force Intelligence Service. In 1990 Annie be-came the Program Manager for the Air Force Commer-cial Activities Program in the Manpower Directorate at Headquarters, United States Air Force. After 10 years, she became the A-76 (Competitive Service Program) subject matter expert at the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the position from which she retired. Every-one who spoke at the Ceremony reiterated what an important person Annie is to the Department of De-fense and how much she will be missed. Her boss shared the fact that in 2007, Annie’s work saved the Federal government over $9 million dollars. The Cere-mony ended with a Presentation of the Office of the Secretary of Defense Medal for Exceptional Civilian Service. Afterwards around 75 folks in attendance joined Annie at an Irish Pub for lunch and more acco-lades including a letter from the White House, read by Dan Gordon, Head of all contracting for the Federal government. Because of her total dedication to her work for the Department of Defense, Annie was advised to take up an outside interest for fun and relaxation. She decided

to get a dog, found the wonderful world of Whippets and you guessed it, her competitive nature has found its way into her dog activities. After the first of the year Annie will be officially retired and will be spending time at home with her husband, Bob, a retired Air Force Colonel, 8 Whippets, a Rag Doll cat who thinks she is a Whippet and a red bellied parrot. Of course what better breed for Annie to have gotten with all the competitive activities which Whippets can participate in – it has been perfect! Annie has embraced it all – she is active in, and one of the Vice Presidents of, the Old Dominion KC and of course a member of AWC. She competes in racing, coursing, obedience, rally, breed and is a CGC evaluator – her “fun and relaxation”! I wanted to share a little bio of her dogs: Starting with the two 12 year olds — “Timmy” – Whippoorwill Power of Justice, CGC. This is Bob’s best buddy and constant companion. “Lucy” – Lucy Andrews, CD, RE, CGC (a rescue). She showed in Veteran Obedience and was HIT for Non Regular classes at the Kansas City and Atlanta National Specialties. She is one show win away from her RAE. The 7 Year olds: “Isabel” – Agstone Whippoorwill Isabel, CD,RE, CGC. “Josephine” – Ch Whippoorwill Mystic, CD,SC, RE, CGC and racing in CWA. She earned her CD in Atlanta and came in 11th in the Triathlon Competition. Two and a half years ago Annie bred Josephine and had a litter of four boys. She has kept them all and is having fun competing with them! “Jude” – Mystic Run’s Hey Jude, JC Needs 4 points to finish and has been a Group placer! “Beatle”- Mystic Run’s Here Comes the Sun, SC (she states he is her best all around competitor) “Maxwell” - Mystic Run’s Magical Tour “Ringo” – Mystic Run Strawberry Fields Forever, JC, CGC. The boys have just started CWA racing. So you see, you may find her in every aspect of our sport – keep your eye out for Annie and her kids!

Thank you......for the wonderful reception of Viggo as a young special in 2010, both from judges and fellow Whippet fanciers. He was described as “one of the nicest Whippets I’ve seen in a long time” by a breeder-judge who competed with him in the ring, and he ended the year as #1 Whippet male in the U.S. in AWC Top 20 points, AKC breed system and AKC Grand Champion rankings.

The specialty wins were really heartwarming, particularly BIS at the AWC Western specialty under Allan Pepper. Other highlights were a Hound Show BIS and several Group 1sts.

In 2011 Viggo will be shown only at specialty shows and a few select all-breed shows. There may also be a litter.

WRAP Report: Assisting a Breeder

The following is an open letter we would like to share from a breeder who recently was aided in having a Whip-pet returned to her after the dog was unceremoniously dumped. Ohio WRAP volunteer Judy Lowther posted pho-tos high and low in an effort to find out who had bred the dog. The letter below comes from breeder Dee Vayda of Shojin Whippets in Hudson, Michigan. -- Brigitte Green-berg, editor.

“Before I turn in tonight...I just had to let everyone know how much I appreciate our Whippet Rescue group. I want to thank Judy Lowther for doing such an outstanding job of rescuing Indy from such a terrible ordeal in Ohio. Without Judy we would not have our Indy back in our home. I know Judy was not the only person involved in getting Indy out of a terrible situation, it was a team effort coming from the rescue group...and I thank you all. Thank you Shelley Kruger for being there for Indy too! “Indy is right now sleeping with Hunter in a warm bed upstairs....after removing the cat from the bedroom for the night. :) Indy will not be taking any more adventures in her life...she will stay here and will proudly show up at the National in April as a reinforcement of how important Whippet Rescue is to our breed. “Thank you again to everyone who has assisted in get-ting our Whippets into good healthy situations or back home with their breeders....”

Dee Vayda Shojin Whippets Afterward, Vayda said she that if it wasn't for WRAP she “would have never known that Indy was in trouble. The girl I placed her with never called to let me know she was going though a divorce and didn't want Indy any more. I ALWAYS take my dogs back for whatever reason or at any time but had no clue except for Judy's persistence. If Judy had not posted those pictures from the Cleveland show on Saturday, I would not have known about Indy.” WRAP's policy is to try to reach out to breeders first and give them the opportunity to take back their dogs. WRAP volunteers also are available to perform home inspections in their areas on behalf of breeders who have out-of-state applicants. Please feel free to use this resource! For more information on how you or someone you know can adopt a Whippet in the Rescue program, please visit the WRAP website at www.whippet-rescue.com, where you will find a list of Whippets who need homes. MEET THE BREEDS ADDENDUM Yikes, as I re-read my article in last month’s Whippet News about the Meet the Breeds booth, I was “horrified” to realize that I neglected to include all the great folks who actually manned (or woman’ed) the booth. Chock it up to general craziness! So, I wanted to set the record straight and give kudos to those whom I inadvertently omitted. Clearly we could not have accomplished our goal of spreading the Whippet gospel without the help of so many members of the Whippet community. Among them are: Bo Bengtson who not only spent time in the booth, but was there at the bitter end help-ing to disassemble and move the booth. In addition, Shellie Juden and both her kids showed up to help with several friendly dogs. Eva Engvall drove down from Buellton and helped advocate for our breed. Thanks to Sandy Kim and Che for the second year in a row. Tina MacGregor came from New Mexico, Tamara Hickman came from Las Vegas, Patti and Jerry McCauley came from San Diego as did Dianne Bowen, Pete DiLeva, Karina Moyano and Christine DeClerk. Harriett Lee helped, as did Lois Magette. Special thanks go to Angie Diehl for working the booth, and for creating the original booth concept which lead to our success this year. It’s always a risk to mention names when thanking folks, since someone can be inadvertently overlooked. So, if I’ve forgotten anyone this time, I hope you will forgive the oversight, it certainly isn’t intentional. The Meet the Breeds event is truly a team effort and I appreciate everyone who has contributed their time, energy and resources over the past several years. I’m sure the folks in New York and Florida will enjoy the experience as much as we have.

10 Tips for Keeping the Fastest Dog Fast at Agility by John Heffernan

For the fastest dog around under 200 yards, whippets should be really fast in agility too. But I see many slow whippets and I also see many whippets that slow down over time. Here are 10 tips for keeping your whippet (or any other dog) fast in agility.

1) Don't correct. Don't let your dog know you are disappointed. Your dog should never know if you’re qualified or not. 99.9% of the time you either made a mistake on your handling or your training or your proof-ing (the latter is most often ignored.) How many times have you watched a handler scold their dog for not doing what they said when you clearly see that the dog exactly followed the handler's body lan-guage? From the dog's point of view, he is getting punished for doing what you asked him to do. If you don't get the behavior you want, go back to a small sequence and try it again. Reward if you get the behav-ior you want. If you still don't get it after 3 times, you either did not train it well enough or you need to try it at a different time and/or place. Let's say your course at home has a sequence of jump, jump, A-Frame, jump. If you don't get the contact you are looking for don't stop, don't treat, but run back as fast as you can and do try the jump, A-Frame, jump part of the sequence again. It's better to do that than just the A-Frame because you keep the game and excitement going. Praise and treat if you get what you are looking for. Many handlers will try and correct, get mad, or stop and talk to their coach, ignoring their dog and his point of view. In the first case, the game stays exciting and they get to try again and maybe get a treat. In the second case, they are corrected and/or ignored, the game stops, and they know they have done something wrong. 2) Keep practices fun and short. Whippets typically don't tolerate a lot of repetition and will get bored. I use a rule of three. Never practice the same thing more than 3 times in row. 3) Avoid RFPs and call offs. Try dropping your shoulder or changing your path instead of using a reverse flow pivot or a strong call off. I use my voice when things are not clear but try to keep it fun rather than either a “barked” order or panicked plea. Most Whippets are “soft” and can't take the strong corrections over time. 4) Give your dog distance. Don't crowd. Work on distance all the time and from the beginning. Distance is not something you only use in

Gamblers, FAST, and Chances. Dogs can find the fastest path by themselves when possible. Don't over-handle them. Trust them. Don't crowd or over-handle just at trials to try and get the Q. 5) Don't yell at your dog; use a cheerful tone of voice. Even if you choose to mark a mistake, keep it happy and try again. 6) Don't let your dog know you are nervous. I found that Wyatt can sense my nerves if he licks my face. The best thing is to work on not actually being nervous, but if you can't, fake it. I find my voice can change and I can act differ-ently in terms of petting Wyatt when I am nervous. He seems to be an expert at picking up on this. So I try and act just like I would at class at a practice run. 7) Don't front cross in your dog's path. Front crosses have their place but I see lots of Whippet handlers doing front cross much too close to their dog and either almost colliding or getting in their way and slowing them down. In these cases, use a rear cross if you can or use distance so you have enough space for a front cross. 8) Try NADAC especially NADAC tunnelers. NADAC courses tend to be very open and flowing and motivating especially to long striding dogs. Tunnelers can be an especially fun game for Whippets. They love the speed and running with nothing to slow them down like tables, contacts, and weaves. Wyatt has gone over 6 yards a second in tunnelers, which is 18 feet in one second. It's the closest thing to racing you can do with your Whippet! 9) Run fast; make it a race. Run on the outside if you have to do. Patriot really loves a good race to the end. It can be demotivating to be too far ahead though. If this happens, shorten your stride but keep your feet moving fast. 10) Have clear and consistent handling, don't flail your arms. Flailing tends to bring your dog into you. Keep your hand out consistently for the whole course. Your dog is going to be the least stressed if your handling is clear, predictable, and consistent. Easier said than done but you will rock as a team if you both know what to expect. You can them relax more and focus on the tricky stuff and not the whole course. Most of all, have fun with your whippet! Ultimately, it's not about titles, placements, Qs but about forming and enjoying a special partnership with your dog.
