P l a c e Y O U R a d v e r t i s em e n t i n t h e T e b a l a G r a m T O D A Y !

Years ago a friend of mine

shared a story that I believe is as

relevant today as it was then. He

said that in visiting with a friend

in his home on a rainy day he

was told that it was a terrible day

by his friend to be outside. He

responded to his friend without

really thinking about it that the

day was not terrible it was only

raining. The idea of it being ter-

rible existed only in his head that

the rain was only wet! In other

words we have the capacity to

decree what the value of an

event, circumstance or situation

will be to us.

As I began the process of writing

this article this memory surfaced

and as is always the case I gained

once again from the wisdom of

my friend who has long ago com-

pleted his journey on this earth.

March is approaching and with it

will come, as always, blustery

winds, rain, perhaps some more

snow and ice. However all of it

is quite normal and will be to us

what we decree it to be.

As human beings we are always

in the drivers-seat of our experi-

ence in life. We determine if we

will learn a valuable lesson and

thereby become blessed or

choose to ignore the opportunity

for the lesson to surface and

thereby continue to be mired in

the darkness of despair or igno-

rance.

The other day I happened to be

listening to a review of a new

program about to air sometime

this month on CBS (I think). In

the situation an older Police De-

tective is talking to another

younger Police Detective with

whom he has been assigned as

his partner. In their discussion he

tells the younger detective that

within him are two powers. He

compared these two powers as

dogs and stated that one repre-

sented goodness and the other

evil. He then asked the young

detective which of these two

powers would become stronger

than the other? The older detec-

tive waited for a moment and

then told him that it would be de-

termined by which one he chose

to feed the most. In other words

if he choose to feed the evil dog

it would become a stronger influ-

ence in his life than the other.

The consequences of this choice

would certainly become reflected

in all his relationships, the way

he did his job, treated others and

in fact the perspective on life it-

self that he would form. This

reminded me of my friend and

his story about his friend and

what a terrible day it was simply

because it was raining.

As we complete our journey

through February and into the

month of March let us realize

that old experiences we have

gone through or are continuing to

go through on a daily basis can

be reflective of the Good Dog or

the Evil Dog. Whatever way we

are choosing to look at those ex-

periences is determining what

impact they continue to have on

us personally. To stop feeding

the Evil Dog all we need to really

do is chose to begin seeing the

experience(„s) from a newer and

higher vantage point. We can

actually choose to free ourselves

from the chains of the past by ac-

cepting that we have something

personally to be learned and rise

above it by choosing to give

thanks to Supreme Ruler of the

Universe for the blessings con-

tained within the past. Perhaps

it is difficult to actually see or

believe that such a blessing is

available however just the exer-

cise of choosing to believe when

there is no evidence to justify

such a belief is a positive step up

to a higher and better way of liv-

ing.

It is my prayer that every day for-

ward will be for you a wonderful

blessing and that increased joy

and happiness will become evi-

dent in your journey of life. I

look forward to hearing from you

and seeing you at the various ac-

tivities held at the Shrine Center,

or your Club or Unit meetings.

Have a great day and a fantastic

March.

Fraternally yours, Rev. Les McClelland

LOVES PARK SHRINE CLUB NEWS…(and random thoughts)

The Ides of March are upon us. Do you

remember what day this happens? Once we

get past the beginning of Daylight Saving

Time (10th), the Ides (15th), Vernal Equinox

(20th), World Water Day (22nd), Palm Sun-

day (24th) and Easter (31st) we will be ready

to resume our regular monthly meetings in

April (11th)

Since the last issue we have had

some activity at our P.O. Box. We received

dues from Noble Steve Bindenagel all the

way from Saluda, S.C. as well as from No-

ble Samuel Radford right here in Loves

Park. These two Nobles were matched by

Noble Hy Bergsten from Pompano Beach,

FL. And Jim Kleck in Loves Park also. A

hearty WELCOME to Noble Radford, as

the newest member of the Loves Park

Shrine Club. Thanks to all for your support.

We received acknowledge-ment

from the Shriners Children Hospital and the

Cincinnati Burns Hospital relative to our

recent donations to them. Yep! We made

the GOLD BOOK again.

My prediction: When Noble Au-

gie and Lady Karen return from Apache

Junction, AZ soon…Lady Karen will have

caught the biggest fish but Noble Augie will

have caught the most.

past Cumberland University 222 to 0.

In the 1890s, the Pittsburgh Alleghenies, a

Laugh a Little Time:

The Blonde’s New Car

Carolyn, a rich blonde, buys a

new automatic Jaquar XKR Sport.

She drives the car perfectly well

during the day, but at night, the

car just won‟t move at all. After

trying to drive the car at night for

a week (but without any luck),

she furiously calls the Jaguar

dealers and they send out a tech-

nician to her.

The technician examines the car

and finds nothing wrong with it.

So he turns to the blonde and

asks: “Ma‟am, are you sure you

are using the right gears?”

Full of anger the blonde replies:

“You idiot, how on earth could

you ask such a question? I‟m not

stupid you know! Of course I am

using the right gears, I use D dur-

ing the day and N at night!”

No Problem

According to a recent article I just

read on nutrition, they said eating

right doesn‟t have to be compli-

cated. Nutritionists say there is a

simple way to tell if you‟re eating

right. Colors. Fill your plates

with bright colors. Green, reds,

yellows. In fact, I did that this

morning. I had an entire bowl of

M&M‟s . It was delicious! I nev-

er knew eating right could be so

easy.

Joey and his classmates had just

finished a tour of the local fire

leave, the fire chief quizzed him.

The fire chief asked little Joey,

“What do you do if your clothes

promptly, “I don‟t put them on.”

T e b a l a S t e p p i n g U p F o r T h e C h i l d r e n !

In this edition of Legacy corner we get a little background on a brother, Noble Wilbert Hecht; a 60 year

member and a proud Shriner and a Legacy of Tebala.

Q: When did you first become a Mason and a Shriner and why was it important to you to become one?

A: I was raised to a master Mason November 7th 1952 in Mchenry Lodge 158. I was home on a 21 day conva-

lescent leave when I was in the Army during the Korean War. I became a Shriner while on my leave at the Te-

bala Temple on May 15th 1957, and Tommy Olson was the potentate during this time.

Q: Who in your family, alive or deceased, were or are in the Fraternity, and what temples do they belong to?

A: My brother William Walter Hecht was a member of Tebala Shrine in 1956 when Allab Mallquist was poten-

tate, and demitted to Medinah.

Q. Can you tell us about one or two of your fondest memories of being a Shriner?

A: The Parade May 15th, 1957: Herb Brown and I led the parade down 7th street to Main Street in front of the

Coronado in Rockford IL, for ceremony. Herb and I opened the ceremonial, in every act and closed it.

From 1961 until 1973 I was instrumental in bringing grade school children from Crystal Lake to Pecatonica, dur-

ing the Circus at The Winnebago County Fair Grounds. The children help bring life to the circus. My kids filled

the grand-stands the 1st year; we had 250 children. By the 12th year we brought 1,236 children to that circus. In

the 12 years a total of 7,000 children saw the circus from Crystal Lake grade school, and I have pictures showing

it.

Q: What positive advice or recommendations do you have for improving and enhancing the fun and spirit here at

Tebala?

A: "I'm all burned out," Wilbert said, and with further discussion, Wilbert stated, “you know we just need to do

it! Do whatever it takes!"

Q: How many Masons in your time as a Noble have you brought into our fraternity?

A: Five: Don Wattles, Don Lewis, Martian Lewis, Attorney Jackson, and Judge Charlie Scott. Then, after an-

swering the questions, Wilbert handed me a potential candidate by the first name of Keith.

When I asked him the questions, “Why are we here,” Wilbert answered, "to have fun," and then added, "and to

Serve Jesus Christ.”

Why do we do it? “For the Children!"

Legacy Corner

The Shrine Hospital is always looking for patients. Doctors are being

notified to see if there are children who can utilize our facilities. Scour your

neighborhoods regarding possibilities for hospital admittance. We can al-

ways use community organizations to talk to. Contact me or Bill Robertson

regarding this idea.

The Shrine is still the best kept secret and we all need to boost our hospitals. Nobles might think about touring

your hospital as they are always quite happy to see people perusing the facilities.

Communication is the Key By Jerry Minor

Communication is a word that is thrown around a lot. Be it at home, work, amongst family

or friends, mostly you hear about the lack of and many times the misunderstanding of what had

been communicated. On rare occasions you hear about communication overload.

When communicating in an organization such as ours, all of those situations can happen in

the same day. So how do we go about changing communication for success? It has to start with

the top of the leadership chain with clear goals and ideas that are collected by the entire organiza-

tion, and sorted out in the most effective matter. My suggestion is to work backwards; what is it

that we want to accomplish? Have the prize in mind, and then figure out how to get there.

Next, we need to ask ourselves, “who can help us get to that goal and make sure we have

set up the system that will get that information flowing?” Who will embrace it whole hearted-

ly? So make a check list, get advice from with whom we need to communicate. Maybe the next

step is to put together a focus group to iron out the details. Put the right people in charge of imple-

menting the crucial areas in the most effective time frame.

The only way to make the system work is to make sure everyone using it understands the

communication system, be it emails, texting, phone calls, or walking and talking. Keep in mind

that without a written communication in many situations, you are taking a chance of the commu-

nication being broken down and not getting the results you had hoped for. Also the communica-

tion requires a deadline so that tasks can be completed in a timely fashion, so that we get the de-

sire result. All involved need to be clear on what is to be done, and on the same page.

We need to motivate those we want to influence, so how can we do this? One way is

through storytelling: put a story behind what we want to convey. Especially in a nonprofit organi-

zation, those involved are there to make a difference, so putting a story to it will be more memo-

rable. Share information about new initiatives, client successes, awards, fundraising achievements

and events. When you inform others of major accomplishments, let them know how they can play

an important role in achieving results. They'll feel appreciated and energized about your organiza-

tion's mission.

Make sure we understand our audience be it tech-savvy Generation Y‟s that like YouTube

and the use of the intranet, or those that prefer the paper newsletter format; we have to make sure

we reach them. We have to make sure we are communicating regularly with those that can to-

gether make our organization successful. For example, Divan officers should set aside time to

meet with the Nile elected officers to make sure we are meet each other‟s needs for success. Just

as the building and office support meets regularly to make sure the officers are kept abreast of

events that arise, and clubs and units have a system to inform others of their goals, plans, and

events are so that there are no conflicting situations.

Make sure basic communication is accessible to all, such as form letters in which we simp-

ly make minor changes, to logos and other formatted items, so that our time management is uti-

lized more effectively when it has already been approved. It‟s important to have easy access to,

petitions, applications and other routinely used documents, and have them in an accessible place

that‟s easy for members to find.

Special Event Project Help Needed I would like to request volunteers from our Nobles who might be able to assist in an ICHIP program that I

will be putting on for the Pecatonica Grade School Fun Fair. The Event is March 9th, 2013, before parade

time. I will need at least 12 helpers to help run the event. Volunteers will need to fill out volunteer papers

to be sent to Grand Lodge. I would like to have some of our Units representing Tebala help children who

would be interested to have their pictures taken with a Big Wheel / Tin Lizzy, a mini-jet, a mini-chopper or

a mini-Indy Car. Tebala Klowns would be a big hit. Any and all help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Jerry Minor
