NEWS OF MEMBERS

The Archaeological Society of Western Ontario will featurepapers by Dr. Dean Axelson and Mr. Charles Garrad in Volume No. 3 oftheir Bulletin (now in press).

Last month the National Museum of Canada published Mr. B.M.Mitchell's "A Preliminary Report on a woodland Site Near Deep River"(illustrated). This publication, No. 11 in the Museum's AnthopologicalPapers series, may be obtained free of charge by writing to theNational Museum of Canada, Ottawa k, Ontario.

Seven new names appear on our mailing list this month. We wouldlike to welcome Mr. Neil Coppietters, the Hiram Walker HistoricalMuseum, Mr. Jack Price, Mr. Peter Shevchenko, Mr. Ronald A. White, Mr.Stanley Wortner, and the University of Toronto Library to our ranks.

Mr. Coppietters and Mr. Wortner have been active amateurs formany years, and are well known in professional circles, having on anumber of occasions supplied valuable background material on the KentCounty area for major archaeological reports.

THE SPRING "DIG"

Our Projects Co-Ordinating Committee has followed up severalpromising leads for our spring "dig" and located a most promisingsite for further study. Arrangements are now under way to obtainpermission for the O.A.S. to carry out an exploratory excavation onthis site, and it is hoped that final arrangements can be announcedat the May meeting.

THE SOCIETY CREST

At the April meetlr.g, the promotion and Publicitee Committeesuggested the adoption of a simpler design for the society's crest. After some discussion, it was decided to solicit proposals from themembership at large, for consideration at the May meeting, and haveArch-Notes carry any design proposal received in time for publication. The designs reproduced below were received too late for reproductionby electronic stencil and therefor do not do justice to the originals.

Page 6: THE ONTARIOARCHAEOLOGICAL SOCIETY ARCH-NOTES · CONTRIBUTION TO THE HUMAN OSTEOLOGY OF THE CANADIAN ARCTIC (A), by J.E. Anderson. CONTRIBUTIONS TO ANTHROPOLOGY, 1958, the National

The Promotion and Publicity Committee hopes that a decision toadopt or reject a simpler design can be made at the May meeting, forthey have to prepare a series of displays and promotional literaturefor an all-out membership drive, starting in September. Since the 0.A.S. crest is to be featured in these displays and literature, a de-ferred decision could hold up the program preparations„

VIEWS AND COMMENTS

The current issue of the Anthropological Journal of Canada (Vol.4, No. 2) carries a well illustrated report by Frank Ridley that shouldprove to be a good basic reference work for others in the northeasternOntario field. Entitled "Archaeology of Lake Abitibi, Ontario - Quebec",it describes Mr. Ridley's work in that area and attempts to establish a1̂-000 year chronological sequence within the temporal framework providedby the stratified Prank Bay and sheguiandah sites.

Next month's issue of Arch-Notes will carry reports on the fieldactivities of several of our members. These arrived too late for inclu-sion here, revisions and additions having caused a four day delay inprinting. w>s^ DOrLaidsori) editor, 111 Riverside Dr, N., Oshawae
