Actuarial

Jack

Page 9: The opportunity of a lifetime - PwC UK

Actuaries work with uncertainty. Join us and you’ll help clients analyse how future events could affect them. This could be anything from a corporate take-over to a major natural disaster. You might be calculating the impact of changing demographics or legislation on pension schemes; the effects that changes in fi nancial markets have on different organisations; or how likely a business is to be hit by an earthquake.

You’ll learn how to use complex fi nancial and statistical theories to weigh up the risks and estimate the odds of what might happen. Just as important, you’ll develop a fl air for presenting your fi ndings in simple, easy-to-understand language. What’s more, early client exposure will broaden your experience. There are two business areas you can choose from – both among the leading actuarial practices in the UK.

In Actuarial Services you’ll work with clients from the insurance industry (both life and general insurance), but also from the banking sector (retail and investment), the healthcare sector, the public sector, as well as corporate clients from the non-fi nancial services sector like energy and utility providers. Your advice could cover solvency, reserving, economic capital, risk management, mergers and acquisitions, company restructuring and de-risking, fi nancial modelling, underwriting, new legislation, the viability of new products and the effi ciency of claims or reporting processes.

In People and Organisation you’ll work in either our Pensions team or Reward and Employment team.

In Pensions, you’ll work with a variety of companies, from large multinationals to private listed businesses. Using our market-leading pensions analytics tool and range of expertise, you’ll help clients develop and implement their pension strategy or benefi t schemes, consult on how they should manage both liability and asset risks within their pension plans, negotiate with trustees on how to fund schemes, design plans to help employees save for retirement and advise on potential mergers or acquisitions.

In Reward and Employment, you’ll help companies incentivise their most senior employees. As part of a multidisciplinary team, you’ll use broad consulting skills underpinned by fi nancial modelling and analytical techniques to develop reward structures that support business strategy, assist clients in understanding wider pay challenges, and are acceptable to shareholders and employees alike.

You’ll get to work closely with the best in industry, fi nance and government in the UK and abroad, bringing fresh insights and motivation to the problems they face. Our clients might want us to help them enter new markets; address the challenges created by organisational change; or draw up a sustainability strategy that aligns their commercial objectives with broader environmental and social concerns.

You can choose to start in Management Consulting, where you’ll build core skills on a two-year market-leading programme. In Economics Consulting you’ll advise high-profi le clients in the public and private sectors, providing economic insights and evidence to help inform their business and shape their organisations. Our work addresses the most complex business and policy issues facing our clients, whether it’s navigating competition and commercial disputes; shaping effi cient and competitive markets; providing macroeconomic forecasts; or framing and delivering big investments.

Strategy& is our Strategy Consulting practice. You’ll work on challenging and varied assignments – from helping a company identify attractive new markets, advising a private equity client on game-changing investments, to supporting industry leaders solve their toughest corporate and mergers and acquisitions challenges.

In Sustainability and Climate Change Consulting you’ll help clients embed sustainability matters in their strategies and throughout their organisations. You’ll also support them in making the most of the opportunities for innovation and growth, created by a world economy that’s becoming greener. Our work with international aid agencies also seeks to resolve some of the most pressing issues for the developing world including tackling climate change and poverty reduction.

In Technology Consulting you’ll work across all industry sectors, delivering projects from strategy through to implementation. Technology is at the heart of business and is often a key driver and enabler of change. We work with clients to defi ne their vision and plan how to get there. By joining us you’ll help build a lasting legacy of improvement and performance, working with leading technologies such as Google Cloud, Oracle, Blockchain, SAP and MS Dynamics.

We recognise that to bring value to our clients, we need to provide the best advice around technological innovation. With us, you’ll be at the forefront of new initiatives and explore emerging technologies and trends to help businesses. Whether that’s helping clients understand how technology can help them unlock their potential and protect their businesses, or using big data to provide insight and help steer strategy.

In Cyber Security we deal with some of the most urgent issues facing businesses and governments today. We help organisations operate securely in the digital world. Our technical expertise enables clients to resist, detect and respond to cyber attacks, as well as understand risks and build better defences so they can effectively manage their operations. You’ll either join our Core Advisory team or our Specialist Advisory team working across all sectors with some of the brightest people in the industry.

In Data and Analytics we help our clients rise to the challenge of analysing big and complex data sets with agility, trust and a business-centric focus by linking performance with data and technology. In Forensic Technology Solutions you’ll help clients manage vast amounts of electronic data and navigate the legal and business processes that are mandated by critical events. When disputes or regulatory investigations arise, a timely resolution

In Technology Consulting you’ll help our clients manage the risks and opportunities associated with technology in their business. This includes IT governance, business continuity, disaster recovery, and information security. I’ve been involved in so many interesting pieces of work over the last four years, it’s hard to pick a standout project. That’s why I love this job – the sheer variety of experiences that are available to you. And, if you want to make a change, there’s always something different on offer.

Day-to-day, my main focus is developing a quality audit approach and ensuring it’s carried out accurately, by speaking to our component audit teams both in the UK and around the world.

The most exciting experience so far was going to Cyprus to take part in Altitude, our leadership development programme. I’m also hoping for an international secondment in the near future.

I really enjoy the working culture here. I’ve developed a reputation with my team for hitting the gym really early in the morning, after being inspired by my former manager – really, it’s the best way to start the day.

Innovation at PwC

Alliances are incredibly important to how we do things, so we have a strong focus on collaboration. A great example is our alliance with Google Cloud – a working relationship to enable us to deliver business and technology solutions that help our clients adopt a cloud fi rst innovation strategy. We’re helping organisations become more agile through the use of standard cloud based apps, thin client devices, moving workload into the cloud and the creation of new cloud applications.

Our alliance is a unique union that combines strengths from both sides. Google gives us access to a vast global network with the brainpower to solve challenging business and technical problems and access to emerging technologies such as Machine Learning and Artifi cial Intelligence. And through us, Google can connect with a huge range of businesses in ways they never could before.

Since we began solving business problems together, we’ve helped bring the cloud fi rst approach to a wide range of businesses using digital technology as an enabler for innovation and new business models, taking learning points from ‘digital native’ businesses. How many times have you seen workers digging up the same stretch of road time and time again?

It might sound simple, but before we developed a digital app and mapping solution, engineers at a major utilities company had no way of knowing who else was working in the same areas, so they weren’t able to coordinate their efforts. This approach has increased productivity and effi ciency, reduced disruption to the public and saved the company a lot of money.

We’ve also helped US Government departments and big retailers identify cyber threats that can occur almost daily and on a massive scale, using the analytics capabilities of the Google Cloud Platform. With responsibility for huge volumes of sensitive and confi dential data, they need to know if anyone is attempting to steal information or cause damage to their network by intercepting connections. We created a way to collect, transport and analyse billions of connections, enabling threats to be identifi ed, challenged and ultimately defl ected.

So, by bringing together our understanding of client needs with Google’s powerful infrastructure, we can offer innovative solutions that continue to raise our profi le in the world of technology. It’s an exciting collaboration which we’re proud to be part of.

Our client – a leading game developer – asked us to produce a data assurance framework to help them track their sales revenue more effectively. As a mobile game company, tracking revenue can be a complicated process, as instead of the money heading straight to the game developer, the money from in-app purchases is transferred via the various application download platforms. Small amounts of money come in regularly, in different currencies, and these transactions are recorded differently by every platform. Accurately tracking this data is a complex process.

Although our client had built a bespoke in-house system to process the revenue data, the unconventional method of payments and the lack of invoices meant they couldn’t be confi dent that everything was right. We worked closely with our client to understand their specifi c business needs and requirements. We then produced a model that enabled us to capture and analyse the data to produce a revenue fi gure that our client had confi dence in. The solution added a signifi cant level of benefi t for our client.

What we look forKnow what you’re signing up forStarting out in your chosen career and everything that comes with that will be exciting, stretching and challenging. But the rewards are well worth it. If you’re ready to invest plenty of effort, commitment, fl exibility and passion, we’re ready to give you our full support and we’ll invest in your future.

All routes offer you the same deal. The opportunity to grow as an individual, to meet new people, and build lasting relationships that will stay with you for life. In return we need people who are resilient, willing to work hard, are quick to learn, and who, above all, are passionate about going the extra mile to help our clients.

Bringing out the best in youThroughout your career, you’ll be supported by the best in learning and development – from specialist seminars, courses and toolkits to informal ‘lunch and learn’ sessions hosted by your peers. Your teammates will show you the ropes, and a People Manager will work with you to guide your career and support you in your learning. And at every stage, progression is based on merit.

The PwC Professional focuses on fi ve core attributes: whole leadership, business acumen, technical capabilities, global acumen and relationships. We use this framework to recruit, develop and assess our people at all grades and in all areas of our business, because we expect all of our people to be leaders.

Get online

Decide on the one programme you want to apply for and the skills you can bring and register online. We’ll then ask you to take some online tests. You’ll fi nd out if you have progressed to the next stage of the process once the deadline has passed. For roles without a specifi c deadline, you’ll know if you’ve made it through within fi ve working days.

Offer

We’ll tell you whether we’d like you to join us as soon after the fi nal stage interview as possible.

Research

At interview, you’ll need to explain why you’ve chosen a specifi c business area, how you think it creates value for our clients, and what skills you can bring to it. You’ll also need to show that you understand how much time you may have to invest in getting a professional qualifi cation. So visit pwc.com/uk/careers and start exploring.

Final stage interview

Your fi nal stage interview will be with a senior member of the team. This will be competency-based so be ready to talk about your experiences, demonstrate your understanding of our business and show you have the attributes detailed in The PwC Professional.

Assessment day

For the majority of our programmes, this will be the next stage of the process once you’ve passed the online tests and we have checked that you meet the requirements for the role. There’ll be numerical tests, then either logical or verbal reasoning tests; a group or individual exercise; and a written exercise. Some business areas also give you a case study or a presentation to do.

Before you join

The support starts as soon as you say ‘yes’. So you feel part of PwC well before your first day, we’ll invite you on to our onboarding website where you’ll have lots of things you need to do before you join.

First stage of our process

For most of our programmes you’ll move straight to an Assessment day. However, for a small number of our roles, you may be invited to attend a first stage interview in one of our offices. It will be competency-based, so think how your experiences demonstrate the behaviours and skills we’re looking for.
